Kit Hodge is the founder of Neighbors Project, a group dedicated to inspiring people to enjoy and improve their neighborhoods. Meeting the neighbors takes a little effort, she says, but there’s no need to resort to wobbly desserts.

Say "Hi"

Hodge calls saying hello "a lost art that needs to be brought back." Try this: Walk around your neighborhood and actually look at people, not down at the sidewalk or at your iPhone. As you pass someone, make eye contact and smile, nod, or say "Hi." Afterward, continue walking, and don’t look back. Repeat.

Spruce up your outdoor space, and spend time there

Hang out on your porch, balcony, or stoop. Put a conversation piece in front of your house: chain your bike there, or plant flowers. If you have a fence, consider taking it down, and if you’re really brave, install a bench in front of your place.

Practice common courtesies

Return your neighbors’ mail if it’s delivered to you by mistake (including a nice note wouldn’t hurt). Help strangers who need assistance with large packages, or carrying strollers up and down stairs. Open doors for others.

Hang out in your neighborhood, and shop locally

Ride your bike in the neighborhood, or take an evening stroll around the block. Patronize local businesses, and if there’s a nearby coffee shop with a bulletin board, use it—not to make friends, but to find resources nearby for things you need (and meet people while you're at it).

Get involved with your neighborhood in a formalized way

Volunteer locally, join your neighborhood or block association, organize a clean-up day for a litter-strewn area, or even run for local political office. It’s the gold-star option.

The Fournier family was recently forced to face every family's worst nightmare: Amanda, age 19, was diagnosed with Leukemia last week. They are a strong family and done in head first to battle the disease with aggressive chemotherapy treatments. If you would like to offer Amanda and her family support, the Fournier's have a collection jar located in the office.

Amanda - our thoughts are with you!

Pledge To Be Green!

In Honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, we are encouraging our residents to be green! I got to have some crafty fun and make this pledge board in the office! It is pretty simple. Drop by the office, and grab a leaf. Write down something easy you pledge to do to "Go Green."

For example, I filled out my own leaf stating I would support local agriculture by buying into an organic crop share. This is something I'm SUPER excited about! I can't wait until it starts June 1st!

My wonderful husband (who helped me with this late night art project) also added a leaf. He pledged to use a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.

What are you going to pledge to do? Come check out the board for yourself, and don't forget to fill one out for your pledge! As a gift for sharing your idea, take home a reusable water bottle. It's our simple way of saying thanks for caring!!

Submitting Maintenance Requests Online

Did you know you can submit a maintenance request online through our website?
Here's easy step by step instructions:

1. Go to http://www.autumnvillage.net/
2. Click on "Resident" button
3. Click on "Maintenance Request Form"
4. Fill out the form, and click send!

How incredibly easy is that!? It is the perfect solution to those "Oh yeah!" moments that hit you at odd hours. You know the ones...you are relaxing on the couch watching your evening TV show and realize you've been meaning to call and have someone look at your flickering kitchen light. But now that you remember, the office is already closed! This will only take you a minute to jump online and send us a request!

Next time you have a maintenance request, try it out!

Congratulations to Lavada!

Our wonderful resident, Lavada was the winner of our March Early Bird Drawing!

Please help us!

2. Please do not litter or leave trash bags on the ground in front of the dumpsters.

3. Unwanted junk mail should be disposed of in the trash receptacle, not left at the mailbox stations.

4. Do not leave any personal belongings on the lawn or in the flower beds. It can and will be disposed of by our landscaping or maintenance staff.

5. Don't forget that city regulations and your rental agreement require you to have your pet on a leash at all times!
Protecting your apartment from accidental fire is one of the most important things you will ever do for yourself and your family. Let this checklist be your guide:

—Keep combustible materials away from heat sources such as chimneys, water heaters, portable heaters, etc.

—Store combustible materials away from stairways and walkways (they could block your exit in a fire). Do not store, use or carry flammable liquids in open containers.

—Keep ovens, range-tops and exhaust fans clean of grease.

—never leave cooking , candles or open flames unattended.

—Replace worn or frayed cords, plugs or wiring immediately.

—Quench fireplace fires completely before retiring.

—Inspect smoke detectors monthly.

—Establish escape routes from your home and know where to meet outside.

—make sure all windows can easily be opened from the inside .

—In the event your clothing should catch fire, stop what you’re doing, drop to the floor and roll around until flames are extinguished.

Maintaining Your Garbage Disposal

Having a garbage disposal is a great amenity in any home. However, we as renter’s are still responsible for the proper use of your disposal. To keep your disposal running well, and to keep your drains clear, please follow the following tips:

*Run cold water while the disposal is on. Keep disposer and water running for 30 to 60 seconds AFTER the waste matter has cleared your drain. The waste still has a distance to go. Cold water keeps the motor, bearings and shredder assembly from overheating. It also lets the waste go down easier because the water is pushing it down.

*Keep anything too hard out of the disposal. The shredder will dull and become less efficient. Small hard objects can also get stuck and jam the rotating parts. Do not put hard bones, shells or popcorn kernels down the disposal.

*Do not put fibrous or starchy items in the disposal. Both can cause particularly stubborn drain blockages (fibers get tangled, and starches get thick). The following items should not be put down your disposal:

Banana peels, celery, potato peelings, corn husks, arti chokes, eggshells, coffee grounds or
filters, fruit pits, hard seeds, or onion skins.

*Avoid placing trash or hard items down the disposal. Common sense will go a long way, but here are some examples of items to avoid:

Twist ties, pull tabs, rubber bands, glass, screws, nails, utensils, cigarette butts, bottle caps, fabric,
string, rags, plant or flower clip pings, toys, hair or grease.

*Remember that using a disposal is not a method of reducing garbage. Putting things down the disposal that can cause a clog can cause a potential problem for the neighbor below or next to you.

Following these simple tips can save you and you family the time and hassle of having a clogged sewer line, broken garbage disposal, or clogged sink!

Join Us for A Holiday Potluck!

The staff of Autumn Village Apartments would like to invite you and your family to join us in celebrating the holidays on Sunday, December 20, 2009.
Local Papa John’s stores will donate 100 percent of their profits on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 8 and 9, to the families of the four slain Lakewood police officers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families. Hopefully, not just businesses will get behind this, but the whole community,” district operations manager Matthew Edwards said. “These are the people who serve us on a daily basis and this is how we say thank you. We just want to let them know that we appreciate what they do.”
Papa John’s has about 40 locations in the greater Puget Sound area, including three in Kitsap County.
