We had a great two years in Ballybrit with Blacklight but when the new GEO system arrived I kind of suspected that we would be out of space. I looked into building a mezzanine etc but the easiest option was to find a larger premises. It soon became clear, though, that finding a suitable space in Galway City was going to be difficult - warehousing units start at 1000 sq foot and it many cases it would require the building on an office unit. Came across the present building on the way home one evening. We share the building with a construction company, so we have a more than adequate 600sq.foot store on the ground floor with an 80 sq.foot office upstairs with shared toilet and canteen facilities - ideal for the occasional late nights in the warehouse. Took us a few days to get the building wired and figure out the whole where-to put-things syndrome. For the first time, we were able to have separate prep and repair areas and a wireless area for the prepping of wireless systems. Even the fact of not having to continually stack gear has made the work flow better. Having the office separate to the warehouse was new - I eventually got through the pile of paperwork that had built up over the last six months - scary!

So the highlights:

The line array had a busy month - Iron & Wine in the Black Box, followed by 4 nights for comedian Tommy Tiernan.

The hothouse flowers on Inishbofin together with a mixture of trad and bluegrass acts over the 3 day festival.

The launch of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway stopover - this is going to be huge for the local economy, so hopefully we'll be involved in the event itself next year.

Right now it's into June - and a gig with the producer of some of my favourite records of all time - Daniel Lanois!

Prosoundnews Europe

Seems we made page 32 of the May issue of Prosoundnews Europe:

Here comes the summer..

Yes, in the words of the Undertones, here comes the summer. It was a corporate event in the Radisson SAS hotel in aid of Sea Change. In a word, Mega. Lighting and visuals by Blacklight. Kudos too to the rest of the crew on the day, MN and KB. The load in was tight, going on whilst an out was going on at the same time from a conference. Still we had the whole rig up and running within an hour and a half.

GEO S12

Just a quick picture of the GEO flying in the warehouse the other day. None of the staff minded the extra hours in the promise of getting a first listen. Since we're still waiting on the NXAMP (s) to use the system to its full potential, we're driving the system with Martin branded Powersoft 18k (sub) and 12K(mid/hi) amplifiers. With the on-loan NX242 processor, the current firmware allows us to use the RS15 sub in cardioid mode with passively run S12's as the mains. Once we have the NXAMP (s) we'll be running cardioid RS15 with bi-amped S12's for larger shows.

Sounds great - how did I get half way down the page without mentioning that - in typical array fashion it never sounds loud til gradually you realise that you can't hear the person beside you! While this is great, it does pose it's own challenges but i'd take that. Photos soon I promise.

NEW PA system! - NEXO GEO S12

Despite being in the middle of providing the sound for Sean Keane's DVD shoot in the Black Box, Galway, I managed to scoot for a day to take delivery of Ireland's first NEXO GEO S12 system. I've had my beady eye on this PA since I was at it's launch at Prolight & Sound 2007 - unfortunately it wasn't available as a touring system til late on last year, so we went with a used Alpha E system in 2007 to cover the growing number of festival clients and larger shows we were booking.

Having used the Galway Radisson GEOS8 system for many years, I was aware of the quality of the GEOS8 speaker, but had reservations with it's ability to cope with loud gigs and it's "boxy" quality at higher SPL levels. The S12 solves this issue at a stroke. The use of a 12" woofer with a 3" voice coil gives a greater warmth immediately and the highly efficient and smooth sounding 1 1/4" horn maintains the highs of the GEOS8 - but the great sound of the box is dwarfed by it's greatest asset.

It's main strength is scaleability. This system works along the lines of JBL's VRX system and other compact arrays but better, and is aimed squarely at the end of the market occupied by the D&B Q series and L'acoustics DVdosc. Always my big question was, "can I have one speaker which can used alone but can perform as part of an array into a much larger system" The JBL VRX stuff was good to a point but it's fixed 30deg box make hangs of more than 3 boxes pointless and over 4 boxes ridiculous. The S12 comes in two fixed vertical versions the S1210 10 deg box and the S1230 30deg box. It comes with adjustable inter-cabinet angle gradients for accurate modelling of the array using NEXO's free Geosoft prediction and modelling software. The next day, I can take two of the same S1230's and an amp and some stands to do a small conference. Or 2 a side on the supplied pole/speaker mount brackets with or without sub. Change a few NXAMP setting

Ah yes the amps - our order will be completed by the delivery of two NXAMP4x4 - yes, four channels of 4000 watts at 2 ohms in a 4U for SFA weight. Plus the built in DSP with setting for every single NEXO product. Versatile or what??! NEXO are still finishing off the beta testing on the DSP so these aren't shipping til early April, so we're using some Martin Audio MA 12K and 18K til they arrive, with the NX242 processors. (The Martin amps mentioned are in themselves are seriously great 1U amps - for more see the martin-audio website) so we're slightly limited in that we can only run the PA 2 way til we get the NXAMPs- oh yeah I haven't even mentioned THE SUBS

The RS15 "Raysub" (what a name!) is a 2 x 15" 30-150Hz (depending on configuration) sub with a power-handling of 2400w and can be deployed as a standard omni sub or as a directional cardioid sub. The cabinets are user-configured as Sub Left or Right Ultimately, this means extra steerability and performance prediction. It's the best sub since the S2 or the DVsub. Unbelievable.

We'll be unpacking the boxes and getting it together over the next few days. Photos too. This is the first GEOS12 system in the country so we're determined to get it out there. First gig next Saturday...

OK my head hurts. later AF.

Hello to all on MySpace!

The blog is now syndicated to our new myspace page . The happy new year of the audio/music/lighting/AV industries in Europe. Right now we can all make plans for 2008 - maybe we will land that festival/installation/contract - who knows - so there's always a real optimistic outlook at Frankfurt which is absent from PLASA as it takes place after the summer. Anyway, flew in last night and hooked up with the Irish Sennheiser crew for a few beverages in O'Reilly's. The show proper kicked off this morning, so after a 10am with Sennheiser (who once again kindly blagged me some passes) I was off to do my own thing. First off was a meet with Nexo - no joy on the new NXAMP4X4 I'm afraid.....it won't be shipping til this time next month. This kinda sucks as it's a big component of some upcoming news that I can't let on about yet til the ink dries. Hopefully we'll find a workaround. The new SSE made cases for the GEO12 stuff are the business. Nexo are exclusive dealers - though I'm sure SSE might have something to say about that.
Next up was Xilica and a look at their new XD series of DSP's - have been getting good reports of these Canadian designs from guys in the US so will be looking at them pretty seriously for installs and PA management. Even though we have a lot of the NEXO 241's etc, DSP is still good for pre GEQ EQ and matrix routing post console.

Then beer. And a hotdog. Then a bit of my favourite game - what manufacturer is that Asian copying?

Then there was the usual round of cable/rigging/stand/flightcase manufacturers - competition must be tough for those guys. Trouble with case makers is they all use the same parts/material. Innovation anyone? Even something that looks distinctive......

Oh and then a play with Drawmer's new 1969 vintage reissues of their valve series. Then it was off to blag into the Sennheiser bar and get a clean T-shirt. Success. Oh look and they've just given me another free beer.

Saw & heard the new EAW microwedge.....sorry but it's not as nice. Maybe that's cos its EAW and not a small manufacturer, but I used to like the little rat in the logo.... Still sounds great though.... price I do not know..

Oh and having to pay for WIFI sucks. 12.50 for 90 mins..... or 50 for a 24hour. First exhibitor to set up a free connection.........

More tomorrow, after the sennheiser party.

Blogitty blogitty...here we go into 2008.

Welcome back to Aux Send for 2008 - yes, it hasn't escaped me that this is the first post since last year (Dec 4th to be precise), so I thought I should make an appearance before this blog takes its bow. So let's consider this one year long encore for Aux Send and if we still like it (and if anyone else still wants it) we might survive another year..
So what's new. Well, surprisingly the year began as the old one ended. January will never break records for being busy in the Irish entertainment industry, however we kept our hands in with some install/service work in Galway club Halo/Central Park with a few shows and corporate jobs which limbered our ears up for February. As is becoming the norm, February was a bit daft - all the stories from the month are up on www.alexfernie.com at this stage so I'm not going to repeat them all here.

Other cool stuff has been getting a chance to catch some decent gigs here in the Roisin Dubh. Particularly the Richard Hawley show in February - superb sounding show for a start with a performance to match. Highly recommend the two albums Coles Corner and the latest Ladybird. The Wall's also put a good show later in the month - some great new Wall songs as well - hopefully they'll get some attention when they are released. Lately however, it's been all Danny Darcy on the stereo. It's his second album and a serious step up after his debut. There's tracks to hear for free on www.dannydarcy.net. My favourites are a killer cover of the Bunnymen's Dancing Horses and Restless Mind and Coldest Night in Galway. The album's on sale over at CDworld.ie.

Dec 4th 2007

Well the Calvin Harris show went off without a hitch - kudos to the crew who had to haul the whole kit and caboodle upstairs (and down again) - and caboodles are notoriously heavy. I wasn't there myself - left the show in the capable hands of EM and MN whilst the CH crew did their thing. Meanwhile I was across town doing a benefit gig for a village in Burkina Faso.
I've finished updating the website - it was the first time I'd used Sitespinner (the HTML editor I use) in Parallels. Also it meant that I had to import photos etc from the mac. All easy without a hitch, I'm pleased to report. Finally, we also got the banner changed with the correct phone numbers (!!!). Thanks to Shane in Infoknow , who also took the time to tweak it up a little. By the way, has anyone noticed how much better pages look in Safari?? IE please take note.

November was seriously busy, so it's good to get a little down time to make some plans for next year. Normally this year we'd be up to our neck in office parties - the Xmas corporate thing seems to be more low key this year - profits can't be as high as in previous years. In fairness though, with some shows with Damien Dempsey and the Sawdoctors plus the day to day stuff, it'll be a good month. Previous Decembers have been full on so I'm actually looking forward to enjoying a normal Christmas this year.

The weekend just gone had shows in St Nicks and the Warwick for International Aids day - Mary Coughlan sings with Cuckoo Savante on a new single in aid of the Aids West charity which was launched in the Warwick on Sunday night. Available on shiny disc in any record store. We've a load of wireless out this week for a show down the country. MN is in charge of the gig, which means yours truly is store boy this week and yeah, the place is a mess....

AF.

November 23rd

Well it could be worse, we could have no gigs this weekend. But Calvin Harris decided to roll into Cuba Live* for a show tomorrow. 8 way monitor mix with side-fill, a 100Kg Crest VX40, an A&H ML3000 and 8 stacks of AlphaE up three flights of stairs - once the crew have done that we'll have a show! Oh yeah and the venue have a cunning money saving scheme!! No electricity between 5pm and 7pm!!! Well I hope someone is running an 30kW heater somewhere at the same time to take up the slack, while we load in at 10am for a 3pm sound check..... Actually having the inventory to do this gig has been a surprise. Rough Magic are on a tour with a full PS15 and PS10 system with the TT24, the regular monitor board. Luckily enough, we were able to get an ML3000 and some more PS10's reasonably cheap to keep the corporates ans smaller gigs sweet. Out of need, we made up a sidefill system comprising of LS500's and PS15's (all Nexo) - we used the sub out from the PS15 controller via a cheapo digi eq to boost 40-50hz and it sounds mega... well enough for the size stage tommorrow, but defiantely an option for later if we are stuck. The Nexo stuff is really versatile, it's the one brand I'll never sell on. AlphaE can be FOH PA or drum/side fill. PS15: monitor or small FOH PA, ditto PS10. I'm thinking about a line array system for next year and Nexo will be getting the first ask...
Later.

November 17th-18th

Sitting in the back of the van (our mix position) writing this - on a gig with Arcana - they're performing a drumming piece for the end of the World Rally Championships in Mullaghmore. Cos it's going out live on telly, there's loads of waiting around - still a free wifi network helps pass the time. We arrived in Bundoran at 5.30am this morning from City West in Dublin, where we were supplying PA for the end of dinner entertainment for the GAA Ladies Allstars. 8am start on site so tiredness is the enemy.
Later,

Macbook migration complete!

So I've just completed the migration to my first mac - went for the macbook, couldn't really justify spending twice the price on a pro - I don't intend using it for protools or major photoshop work. Though I got it last week, gigs in Belfast, Wexford and Cork meant that I only got down to loading up Windows this week. Had to upgrade to Leopard (which rocks!) in order to get Bootcamp - after 2 aborted attempts at loading windows I read the instructions. All fine since. Unfortunately I need windows to run our accounts software and update the website and access the online banking facility through IE.
til again....

October...

Apart from being one of U2's best tunes, October 2007 has been a mixed bag of events. The month kicked off with the TCD fresher's week mentioned in an earlier post. We did quite a few corporate events around the weekend of the Police show in Croke Park, which I attended, thereby leaving the Making Galway Proud ball in Eddy Marron's capable hands.
I enjoyed the Police gig. I was seated in the canal end slightly to stage left - opposite the main PA hang. We were served PA wise by a 6 box hang of V-dosc on the second delay tower. All good for a stadium show. Though some of the punters beside me were,to quote Jimmy Higgins snr., "so dry they'd fart dust". I often wonder what people expect from a show to judge from some of the complaints about the gig. One I gather was a complaint about a 60 Hz resonance at th canal end of the cusack stand.... give me a break, who are these self-proclaimed amateur sound police?!!
After that I stayed in Dublin to do the Schwarzkopf Business Awards on the Monday. Held in the Alexander Hotel, the lunch time event went smoothly. I love the sennheiser ME36 heads for podium mics. Makes a gig like that easy.
Later that week I bought my first grown up hi-fi. I've wanted something like this for the last 16 years, ever since I started in this weird circus-like mad and lovable profession, but never had the required beans at my disposal. When we bought the house in Caherlistrane, I set about putting together the funds (well the shed had to come first I guess) for it. Eventually settled on a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 (a What HIFI winner in 2005) and a modest Sony amp. So I've spent a lot evenings lately just listening to music properly, I think, for the first time - at least that what it sounds like. Highly recommend the Wharfedales. Available in Sony centres.
Bought Eric Clapton's autobiography last week. Enjoyable if occasionally hard to read book. A lot of his life was spent battling addictions so naturally it must form a substantial part of an often tragic and yet often funny story. He's unbelievably modest also - in relation to his often amazing guitar virtuosity and the purely material side of his career.
Last week, there was the Baboro Childrens Arts Festival, so we had a few systems around the city. The guys doing the production Babyrave were using an array of Logic Systems CA boxes. Tidy easy to rig system ( I helped with the load in). Sounds good and importantly warm. A lot of the pocket line arrays concentrate overly of Hi freq coupling and throw as the expense of the mid to low bass section.
So thats that for now. Been lazy on the photo front lately. Aplologies.

Be careful what you wear...

While checking a few threads on prosoundweb, I found this, which looks cool in a sound nerd look at me kinda way. Crest VX gets a wash

Spent most of last week over and back to Dublin. Starting early last week, we supplied some systems for Trinity College's Freshers Week for events (mostly college bands) on and off-campus. Last Monday was a gig with Monaghan band The Flaws , The Laundry Shop (the band who wrote the tune for the current Failte Ireland ad ("All these highs and lows...") and a young bunch of guys called The High Kings.
So there we were, loaded in and PA rigged - Derek Turner FOH for The Flaws happy, starting the sound check - we nip upstairs to the bar for a coffee. 10 minutes later, Derek shows up:
"You're not gonna believe this......" We went downstairs to see the console (Crest VX40) having just got a pint of water over channels 10 - 18 with some catching the master section. The guys had dragged the board out of the way of the water. Apparently a leak had developed upstairs and the water had poured through the ceiling, directly onto the board. Noise on several channels, VCA's going gaga, mutes gaga, noise of FX returns, noise on some preamps.....doors in 3 hours.....hmmm. Out with a hairdryer, out come channels 10, 12,14 and 16 (thanks god for modular consoles...!). Dry and inspect. Switch on after about an hours work......good to go except for channel 16 which is still pissed off about the sudden shower. Gig happened, all good. Plumber upstairs feels my wrath.
Back to Galway on Thursday for the Making Galway Proud fundraiser in the Radisson SAS, then up to Dublin on Saturday for the Police gig - where I was a mere punter. Good show, though have to say the punters in the canal end where I was would've been better off staying at home and watching Ryan Tubridy on TV.
Stayed in Dublin over the weekend - we had the Schwarzkopf Business Awards on Monday lunchtime in the Alexander Hotel - show came down at 3pm

September 29th

The past two weeks have been pretty relentless, with the Galway Jazz Festival(GJF), NUIG Fresher's Week and various other one-off shows. The GJF had a full weekend of acts spread across venues throughout Galway City, this ran right across a show for The Blizzards as part of NUIG - most of the weekend ('sides mixing the entire Jazz Festival) was an exercise in logistics - at least now we know we can run two Alpha systems simutaneously with boards and monitors. Oh I almost forgot in all that excitement, Druid had a large PS10 rig out for their production of A long Days Journey into Night. This has kind of lead to the latest debate within the business whether to buy more boxes - basically trying to guess-timate to level of business for the next 9 months to a year. More about that later...

This week saw also one off shows with The Sawdoctors and the Old Crow Medicine Show, whilst in the meantime I was off doing some work on the Terry Wogan/Keith Wood Golf Classic for Litton Lane in Doonebeg and the Galway Oyster Festival Gala Dinner in the Radisson. Meanwhile Druid and NUIG were coming to the end of their hire gigs.

A lot of people having been asking me lately about the status of my company, i.e. me(!!)vis a vis the Radisson SAS in Galway as regards the PA system in the Inishmore Ballroom .

From my point of view, I had a verbal agreement with the hotel since 2003 to provide sound engineers for various events which necessitated the use of their then newly installed Geo system (it was, at the time and still is, a state of the art and great sounding compact line array system - a system design that attempts to defy the laws of audio physics for those of you not familiar with the techno side).

Anyway, since 2003 we have supplied engineers for their conferences and dinners but also having to supply minor elements such as extra wireless and playback equipment, extra outboard and consoles free of charge for many if not all jobs in the hotel. Due also to a lack of any designated storage space for the system, components were lost and misplaced. Consequently a lot of "on the job" maintenance took place however the system continued to work as designed.

In 2004 I requested that all the motors be recertified as required by Health and Safety law ( the motor chain hoists hold the PA in place in the ceiling for those of you unfamiliar) in an email. I have yet to receive a reply to this email. In 2005. 2006 and in april 2007 these requests and demands were made by email and verbally to no avail. In April 2007 I sent an email to the hotel stating that we would no longer be in any way liable if the PA fell out the ceiling.

Also at that time (November 2006), I noticed that the tweets (high frequency speakers) in the Geo were beginning to sound a little dull after 3 years a use. I requested that they be replaced. I priced the job at €1000 ex VAT for 10 diaphrams with fitting. Each diaphram costs £49 sterling ex carriage. The hotel had no funds available - I offered to fit the diapharams for free. Still no budget. They had money to fit new blinds though in December 2006.

In May 2007, I heard on the quiet from a member of staff that the hotel were looking to tender out the entire audio and visual operation. I quoted. I offered free PA for 3 months to supplement the system in the Hotel as required ( as was normal anyway) only requiring that the fulltime staff member required would be paid the going rate. We even offered to fix the Geo for free.

The day after I quoted I was told that it was too late - the had already tendered out the contract the previous day. I was never formally asked to quote for the tender, nor was I made aware of the tendering process.

I never requested a formal contract in 4 years. Despite doing audio in the ballroom for 30 events+ a year for 4 years we only ever received one complaint from a client (a wireless headset gig in front of the PA back in 2005, it was never going to work anyway, minor feedback).

However since the fiasco that was the 2007 Race Ball, we have been hired in there for more jobs than ever so if any of you require operators and PA for jobs in the Radisson, we'd be happy to offer a competitive rate with the gaurantee that it will be better than the service offered by the present inhouse crew.

September at last.......

Well, I've been noticeably absent from the blog since June. This was due to it being the busiest part of the year for one and also since we moved to our new house in north Galway, I've been unable to get any from of hi-speed internet access outside of the warehouse in Galway. Since I normally update the blog with a beer in the evening, the lack of web access meant this hasn't been the case for the past 3 months. Now however I got myself hooked up with O2's mobile DSl pack, which is giving me respectable speeds out at the house.

So to celebrate, I've renamed the blog Aux Send - why it wasn't called this when I first set it up, I'll never know but sure there you go......

I'm not going to recap on the summer here, since it's all on www.alexfernie.com if you really want to know all about it.
Later, Alex.
