In The Red

Out of Metz, France comes the ugly and brutal noise-punk of A.H. Kraken. Their name is an amalgam of a facist dictator and a sea monster, and their sound is a wild, intense blur of bludgeoning rhythms, industrial clatter, scraping guitars, and caterwauling vocals. Citing influences as disparate PiL, Motörhead, US Maple, Suicide, Flipper, The Shaggs, and Chrome, A.H. Kraken could implode or explode at any given second. Everything is yelled in barely intelligible French, so it's impossible to say what they're bellowing about, though one song is titled "Kevin Costner Est Un Acteur Americain". When bassist/vocalist S.J. was asked, he assured that the lyrics are 'all about peace and love'. Be skeptical. A.H. Kraken are pure, unrestrained throttle-burn. They create landscapes of sound with instruments that are obviously getting the shit beat out of them. This mega-decibel audio destruction at its most overwrought is not for the faint of heart.

LP - ITR154 - £11.99
LP comes with a free CD inside.
basket : wish list

The Declining Winter : Goodbye Minnesota
Rusted Rail
Summer Turns To Hurt
We Used To Read Books
I Don't Really Want To Be Alone

The Declining Winter is the solo musical project of Richard Vincent Adams of Leeds, England, a co-founder of Hood. "Goodbye Minnesota" is his debut album under this guise, following an acclaimed 7" on Misplaced Music and a sold out remix CD on Moteer. Ranging from epic claustrophobia to rustic folk-dub explorations, with spectral atmospheres anchored to pastoral roots, "Goodbye Minnesota" delivers hypnotic melancholia via abstract hiphop, shoegaze, dub and post rock explorations. Along the way there's also rain-drenched pop and globally warmed electronic folk. These are ghostly songs filled with absence, longing and seasonally affected melodies - the sound of cassette tapes spilling out of the glovebox of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England, captured on Super 8 film. This record features contributions from Chris Adams (Hood, Bracken) and Chris Cole (Many Fingers, Matt Elliott) and is housed in a recycled card sleeve in keeping with the environmentally - concerned nature of the project.

CD - RR14CD - £9.99
basket : wish list
By now you're likely familiar with the (barely) contained chaos of Health. Their debut record released on Lovepump United and relentless touring with the likes of Crystal Castles, Dan Deacon & White Williams has cemented their status as one of the most exciting & energetic bands on the scene! Publications including Vice, NME, Fader, XLR8R, and Pitchfork agree. "Health // Disco" is an album of remixes of songs from Health's debut. This is not your typical remix album. Every artist on the record was hand selected and commissioned by Health with the hope of combining their sounds and musical ideas with those of electronic artists they admire, across the globe from Japan, The Netherlands, Germany, Argentina, Canada the USA, several of them doing remixes for the first time. This is an album and should be listened to as one.

CD - LPU019 - £10.99
basket : wish list
"Supreme Balloon" finds the dynamic duo of M C Schmidt and Drew Daniel taking a holiday from conceptual responsibility, skipping the outré sampling antics in favour of a lighthearted 'cosmic pop' record made entirely out of synthesizers. That's right, no household objects played in a percussive manner, no snails or blood or amplified semen, no acoustic instruments, no voices of famous people for five seconds, not even any half-way cheating with Vocoders, just synthesizers of all shapes, sizes, eras and nationalities being snipped, folded and reshuffled by an arsenal of samplers and computers into colourful sound-origami. Gear fetishists take note: the exotic and antiquated synths used on the record heavily spotlight the classic 60s/70s/80s consumer electronic rigs of Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf and Moog, and feature modular systems from Electro-Comp, Doepfer and Akai (hell, even a stylophone and a Suzuki Omnichord show up). But there are also completely unique, one-of-a-kind modular curios present, such as the "Coupigny" modular synthesizer housed in the INA/GRM studios at Radio France in Paris and used extensively by some of the titans of musique-concrete.

CD - OLE7992 - £8.99 - limited cheap price - NOT OUT UNTIL MONDAY!
basket : wish list
Maybeshewill is the product of a broken laptop and four boys' over-active imaginations. They occasionally release bits and pieces of music through a label they invented one afternoon called 'Robot Needs Home Records'. Sometimes they play shows, though not very often. They'd rather sit at home watching films and stealing bits from them. Maybeshewill were formed in Leicester in the summer of 2006, and released their debut EP "Japanese Spy Transcript" in the Autumn of the same year. Nottingham's Field Records stumbled across a copy of the record and asked them to be part of the first of a series of limited edition split singles, which was later to include such underground luminaries as Tired Irie, Cats & Cats & Cats, Public Relations Exercise and You Slut!.

CD - FIELD011 - £9.99
basket : wish list
Soe'za are currently a seven-piece band, hailing from points along the M4 corridor, from Bristol to London. The band is part of the wider 'Pull the Strings' collective in Bristol; an artists' platform organised primarily to bring together like-minded people, concerned with interesting music and energetic ideas. Members of Soe'za have been involved with artists such as Movietone, Line, Manyfingers, Matt Elliot and Eliza Carthy. With a somewhat unorthodox line-up of two drum kits, two electric guitars, bass, French horn, Soe'za mix Can-esque grooves, and urgent guitars with two disparate yet complimentary singers in the shape of Ben Owen's clear-voiced declarations and Jenny Robinson's soulful melodies. The band twist this template in every conceivable direction, with French horn rounding out subtle modulations of mood.

CD - WAAT035 - £9.99
basket : wish list
Mating rock guitar with electronic dance dance rhythms, Japan's The Sun Paulo can only be described as a musical roller-coaster, careering through impossibly-convoluted twists, turns and dazzling displays of kinetic virtuosity shot with rampant, crazed energy. Although musical reference points aren't hard to spot, the freewheeling, quite natural way they're gobbled up and spewed back out at often blinding speed makes for a listening experience quite unlike anything else on the planet. "Electric Wisdom Sound System" can switch gear several times during the course of one track, like "But We Want More", which eventually settles into a mighty slavering funk beast, or, even more extreme, the three part "Electric Western", which manages to straddle jazz, beatific piano-string ambience, belting techno and what sounds like the Mahavishnu Orchestra dry-humping System 7 at the Paradise Garage. Shards of 70s groups like Focus, the Allman Brothers, Santana and the Mothers flash past in what sometimes resembles an aural meteor storm, often colliding with 21st century electronica, all climaxing with an outrageous version of Burt Bacharach's "Close To You" which will carry you off to a higher plane altogether.

CD - MD633 - £10.99
basket : wish list
Virgin Passages create beautifully original soundscapes from often improvised pieces but retain a pop sensibility akin to early Mercury Rev, Spacemen 3 and Jackie O Motherfucker. Following the collection of early recordings on "Mandalay", "Distance" sees them in great pop form with the short and sweet title track followed by a meandering Stereolab-alike anthem of "This Is Not The End Of The World Again" and the neu-folk, subtly sublime "Who Do You Love".

LP - FIRELP114 - £8.99 - NOT OUT UNTIL MONDAY!
basket : wish list

CD - FIRECD114 - £6.99 - limited cheap price - NOT OUT UNTIL MONDAY!
basket : wish list

Headspin / Static Caravan

Ass is the work of Andreas Soderstrom. Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly intoxicating 10 track record, the follow up to his astonishingly assured, eponymous debut – both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him hacking through the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning a stark melancholy which simmers throughout. From the Britfolk fingerpicking of "I've Been Here" to the austere "Cool Water", the self taught multi instrumentalist wrings a plaintive beauty from his fingers; penning profoundly moving, largely non vocal entities, augmented at various points by electronic gurgles, horns and an accordion. Channelling a hypnotic style which is at times reminiscent of folk legends such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and John Fahey, his crisp compositions nevertheless have an ultra modernist edge to them, digital elements seeping through and sounding perfectly at home, but with a softly engaging feel rather than the clinical hum of technology. "My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went" is that rare kind of record; bewitching and thougth provoking, comforting and challenging. It's a real treat, and a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly disarming performer.

CD - HEAD007 - £11.99 - limited cheap price
basket : wish list

Ltd LP - VAN167 - £9.99
Limited to just 500 copies on purple vinyl on Static Caravan.
After half a decade of living room recordings whilst backing up the Swedish top list artists, versatile punk rocker and instrumentalist Andreas Söderström finished this his debut record as Ass (Andreas Soderstrom Solo) in 2006. This modernistic debut is a mainly instrumental folktronic journey into a soundscape of multilayers performed entirely by Andreas himself. Self tutored amongst the jungle of strings in his father's bouzoki factory, Andreas is a familiar bearded face in the Swedish alternative music scene. Over the past years Andreas has played bass with multi-awarded pop princess Jenny Wilson, trumpet and lapsteel with the international renowned electronica project Tape, harmonium, key harp and guitar with the folk project Blood Music.

CD - HEAD005 - £13.99
basket : wish list

Following up on their acclaimed CD "New Rap", two of the Tokyo Underground's most extreme artists get together again for another twisted exploration of the outer limits of sound. Performing on voice, guitars, drums, keyboards, samplers, theremin and more, Haino and Yoshida take full advantage of studio techniques and digital editing in creating this bizarre and masterful suite of songs and instrumentals.
Korine's previous films have found their truths in unblinking realities cross-cut with surreal images, exposing an emotional core that remains elusive after the movie is over — ennui, delight, disgust, celebration… Mister Lonely subtly heightens all these effects with a narrative involving celebrity impersonators searching for a place where they just can be themselves and nuns who have discovered a new way to fly. Working independently and never collaborating, Jason Spaceman and Sun City Girls employ an instrumental approach for the sounds here, with one or two chanted exceptions. Their music conspires in an exquisite corpse-like fashion — without knowing what the other was doing, they've each brought half a body to the film, supplying the apparitional and austere sounds of a world in which everyone is something they're not.
LP - DC360 - £11.99 - NOT OUT UNTIL MONDAY!
basket : wish list
