This week we’re kicking off something exciting over here at BBOS, authenticity week!

We work really hard to deliver our amazing customers the best bags, in the best condition we can, and one of the most important steps is authenticating the bag to make sure you’re getting the real deal. So all week we will be delivering you little tips and clips of big things to look for when determining if a bag is real or fake.

To start, we’re bringing you this blog post. Our hope is that this can be an ongoing reference point for you when you are deciding on purchasing a bag, or if you’re considering buying a fake bag, why you should splurge for the real deal!

1. Why are fakes so bad?

Great question. Well, for starters, fake bags are connected to the black market. It’s flat out illegal. Now, we love a good bag just as much as the next girl, but personally, we think that breaking the law for a bag isn’t worth it. Why is it illegal? Counterfeit bags infringe on the copyright of the designer and brand. When you purchase one of these bags you are directly supporting these illegal acts. These bags are also typically produced by organized crime and illegal businesses. They may be made by young children in very poor and tough working conditions. When purchasing these bags, you are not just supporting child labor, but also the other crimes these organized crime groups do, such as, human trafficking, and child abuse.

2. Too good to be true!

Is the price just right? That can be a sure sign that you aren’t getting the real thing. Popular bags that are made fraudulent such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel absolutely never go on sale! If the price seems significantly lower than the bag is typically listed for, it probably is too good to be true and you should leave that item in the dust. Luxury bags can be an investment piece for most. If you are lusting over a bag you cannot afford, don’t go for the poorly made bag, instead, spend a few weeks or months saving for the bag and purchase it that way. 3. Do the work.

Research! Look into the bag you want to buy so you know how to spot a fake if you think you may have gotten one. Things that are important, like material. Did you know that not all designer bags are made of leather? Louis Vuitton is coated canvas with leather trim. The hardware of the bag should be heavy, not completely hollow. Another important part, is the lining of the bag. A real, quality handbag company will not use cheap lining. Counterfeiters often are working from a photograph, which makes it difficult to know what the lining is made of. Even the zippers on a real designer bag will be made of the highest quality. If a handbag has a printed logo on it, the company will never put the logo on a seamed area. Watch for things like pockets as well. Know the bag you are buying inside and out (literally), counterfeiters will often skimp on pockets since they are working from photographs. Often times, the little details are what gives it away. Watch for them! Fake bags have things like authenticity cards, price tags, and receipts too. Don’t fall victim to the tricks!

4. What’s that smell?

You may notice a strange smell with a fake handbag. That’s because they will typically have a chemical odor to them. If you open your bag and get a whiff of something funky, that is a sure sign of a fake. Run away.

The bottom line is, don’t purchase a fake. If you accidentally purchase one, we forgive you, but hopefully these tips and the ones to come this week, will be wonderful tools you can reference to avoid purchasing one again in the future. Remember that real is best and do the right thing! I know some of us out there aren’t getting the most welcoming sign of Spring (snow? seriously?), there still happens to be quite a few things to celebrate now that April is upon us.

Although it doesn’t seem like it yet, warmer weather is on the horizon, or at least I hope it is.

But to bring a happy, positive light to this, April also is the host month for National Pet Day! On April 11th we all will be able to dedicate a full day to our beloved pets. I mean, not like that isn’t every single day, but this is at least a day where we can treat and pamper our furry friends a little bit more than usual!

To celebrate this event, here at Bag Borrow or Steal, we are taking the entire week to honor our pets!

From April 9th – April 13th we will be putting on a campaign called #HandbagsAndHounds. Because who doesn’t love their handbags and who doesn’t adore their hound?

If you’d like to participate, all that we ask is that you take a photo with a handbag (can be a bag currently on borrow from us, a bag you have bought from us, or your own!) and your pet, and share it to your Instagram either on your Instagram Story, or your regular Instagram feed, or Facebook and Twitter as well, and use the hashtag #HandbagsAndHounds. Throughout the week of April 9th – April 13th, we will be reposting the photos to our feeds (giving you photo credit of course!), and at the end of the week we will be giving away some pretty cool prizes for both you and your pet! We’ll be giving away some BBOS Gear for you, and some Organic Dog Treats for your pup!

The giveaway selection will be at random, but you cannot win or enter without posting a photo and using the hashtag so we see the photo!

This begins next week Monday, April 9th! So get out your cameras, and get your hounds ready for a photoshoot!

Here we are on the eve of Valentine’s Day. Yep, this YSL is pleasant perfection.

On a recent outing, I couldn’t help but get a few images of it, and of course it totally stole the show. If clothes don’t make the man, then is it possible a bag can make the outfit? In this case, a resounding yes.

The bag is super versatile and can be worn a couple of ways because of the chain straps and their ability to be worn short or long. You can rock it out as a long bag to the hip (my favorite!) or shore up the straps and do a more classic under-the-arm look. A cross-body look can be done, too… perfect for daytime!

I paired the Saint Lauren with a flowy, floral maxi and lace-up heels. A little boho mixed with glam was the ideal mix of form meets fabulous!

So much style, so much luxury *Sigh* Lets never forget:

Bag charms have been making waves across the Internet for a few months now. I personally love them, especially when it comes to designer bags! Specific designer styles tend to have 15 minutes of fame where everyone everywhere is carrying one: think the Celine Luggage, the Chloe Drew, or the 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli. When your’e carrying the same bag as everyone else, bag charms are a fun way to keep your designer gem individual and unique to you. It’s bound to catch a few more glances with an accessory or two!

I decorated this Balenciaga Mini Papier with a faux-fur fuzzy keychain to add a cozy winter touch during my holiday travels. I love how much more it stands out!

All of these are like our armor and ammunition for a day of battle in the jungle of our lives. Lipgloss included. Three VERY tiny lipglosses because I have not earned the right to carry full-sizers around anymore. Once I go three weeks without losing one of these Bare Essentials babies (valued at about $2.50), I can graduate to a probation period of carrying around a Mac lipgloss (valued at $15). If I can keep that in my possession for a couple weeks I’ll maybe allow myself to bring a NARS with me around town (valued at $26). You see?

I kept a few notable things out of the picture… because obviously bobby pins, old parking receipts, and pocket lint would have wrecked the clean vibe.  Equally unphotographable in this particular shot but very valuable to my daily life and always in my purse… my iphone battery pack (a “mycharge”), an iphone charging cord, earbuds, dentyne ice gum, hand sanitizer, a tiny pack of floss, and mouthwash.
