Are you ready for all the excitement of Memorial Day weekend? This is the time of year for amazing sales and serious shopping. If you are a shopping addict and love sales, you must hit the Aventura Mall this weekend. If you hate crowds and cannot stand a hectic parking lot, then avoid the Aventura Mall or any mall for that matter. This is also the time of year that Miami is flooded with tourists.

South Beach is a complete overload of visitors only looking to let loose an party. In fact, the police are anticipating a higher than usual arrest rate. There will be many more police patrolling the streets and keep guests under control.

The sun is shining, gardens are blooming

City living can be pretty fantastic, and living in Aventura is no exception. This tropical metropolis is home to beautiful coastlines, amazing shopping, and delicious cuisine. There are walks to take, beaches to go to and plenty of other activities to do. However, for some there is one activity in Aventura that can be challenging to manifest – Gardening. Traditionally gardens are located in suburban or rural areas and finding a place to have a garden in the urban landscape of Aventura can be hard. In order to achieve the organic bliss of nurturing mamma nature in the city, it’s important to think up.

The majority of the towering buildings of that make up the city of Aventura are condominiums. Condominiums have terraces and terraces are an excellent spot to have a garden. This is especially common in luxury New York City palaces in the sky. Design Sponge did a great piece on NYC gardens and rooftop masterpieces – NYC Rooftop Gardens. Outdoor space is most New Yorkers’ ultimate real estate wish. We initially hunt for more light, bigger rooms and better locations, but even after you’ve found a great apartment, it’s impossible to not eventually hope for a place to plant a garden to sit outside. While the reality of an amazing rooftop garden feels about a hundred years away for me, for some New Yorkers, it’s sitting right in front of them. Rizzoli recently released a book full of those people’s homes called Rooftop Gardens: The Terraces, Conservatories, and Balconies of New York and I’m totally hooked.

Bringing it back local, when you’re driving East on William Lehman Causeway notice the rooftops of the Turnberry condos – there’s greenery in the sky. Also, The Biscayne Times Contributor Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer recently published an article titled A Garden in the Sky. She writes in the article about her of her love of gardening, her love of apartment living and her ability find a harmonious balance where she can do both. She states “It just takes a bit of imagination. In a vertical city, we don’t have any choice but to get creative if we want to accomplish the things that many of our suburban counterparts do without giving it a second thought.”

It’s remarkable to watch a tiny little seed grow in a beautiful flowering plant and for many there’s nothing like living in Aventura. Whole Foods Workshops Go Green

Grocery shopping plastic bags can accumulate fast over a short period of time. Some people reuse them to carry other things in, but more often than not they end up in the trash. This can be very harmful to wildlife and/or find its way to landfills.

Aventura Whole Foods Market in Florida has found a constructive way to recycle those plastic bags in to something very purposeful. Using recyclable materials, various workshops are available to learn how to create with “plarn”. What is “plarn”? Quite simply, it is plastic yarn, the product of those plastic bags.

“Plarn” is amazingly strong and at the same time, soft. Aventura Whole Foods workshops will teach you how to make belts, bags and other great stuff using these recyclable materials.

Lion King at Adrienne Arsht evacuated – Miami rain made appearance

This weekend it seemed like there was no escaping the rain. Even those that attended tonight’s performance of the Lion King at the Adrienne Arsht Center were not immune. The Lion King performance was cancelled at approximately 8:05pm, this happened during the second half of the show. This decision was made because of a flood in the lobby and upper tier levels – large amounts of water entered the property.

The lights went on and an announcement was made to a full house.

The crowd was instructed to evacuate the premises. The evacuation took approximately one hour and nobody was injured. Guests slowly made there way outside as they moved down the staircases.

The Lion King show features spectacular songs, dances, and theatrical imagery of Mother Nature and the circle of life. Clearly, this was one performance that will not be forgotten and the power of Mother Nature will always be respected.

According to the Adrienne Arsht Center the box office will accommodate patrons and the Lion King will perform again.

Saturday morning rain

According to an article in Travel + Leisure magazine, the 2nd most visited shopping mall in the nation is the Aventura Mall. With South Florida’s traffic being as bad as it is, getting there can be quite a struggle at times. If you’re traveling via I-95, the exit ramp to get there, Ives Dairy is always a major source of frustration no matter which direction you’re coming from. One way to ease the stress is to let someone else do the driving, try taking the bus instead. It’s convenient, saves money and thanks to a recent federal grant it’s going be a lot faster.

Here’s what the future might look like…

According to an article in The Miami Herald, titled Broward gets Grant to Speed Fort Lauderdale-Aventura Bus Route, Broward Transit Systems recently acquired funds to explore technologies that will improve transit time. Soon it will make that much more sense to leave that car at home and take the bus. Already Miami-Dade and Broward Transit services have easy to understand tools to help you plan out your route to Aventura Mall. Once you get there be sure to take advantage of the Aventura Express Shuttle Bus Service. The shuttle bus service is a transit system, offered by the City of Aventura, that will connect you via multiple routes to exceptional shopping and all the places you need in Aventura. So the next time you’re planning a trip to the Aventura Mall, take some of the stress out of the journey and take the bus. You’ll shop much better and you’ll never have to remember where you parked!

Finding a Kid-Friendly Location in Florida

As a new parent there is a lot of change that happens in your daily life. Now instead of a quick trip to the grocery store, you have to pack up yourself and your child and a quick trip turns into a much longer ordeal. Often when it comes to going out to eat or visiting local parks, it is important to know what accommodations they have for new moms and their new additions. Though many restaurants are family-oriented, there are still some that are more meant for older children or adults when it comes to their accommodations.

When it comes to getting out with the kids in the Miami area, there are general issues many new moms will run into without realizing it. One of the biggest issues new moms find when they are visiting a new place is the use of family bathrooms. These types of bathrooms allow both parents and children of different genders to enter the bathroom and help their children. Many family bathrooms will include changing tables for younger infants and more accessible bathrooms for toddlers. When visiting local parks or beach play areas, some locations will have stroller parking and lock stations where mothers an leave their stroller locked up and not have to worry about keeping an eye on it while they are allowing their children time to play on the playground. If you are taking your children out to eat, you may find to your surprise that the children’s menu consists of two items that your child may or may not be able to eat. It is important to consider the restaurant you are going to and the menu they offer for children before heading out to eat. That way your children can enjoy the eating out experience just as much as you.

In the Miami area there are plenty of family friendly locations to visit. These can include family-friendly restaurants like Applebee’s, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Bahama Breeze and IHOP. Though many of these restaurants are chains, they pride themselves on offering family-friendly eating for all ages and have menus that appeal to even the pickiest eaters. Along with kid-friendly menus, many of these locations have family bathrooms and every location in the Miami area has an infant changing table for parents totting along their little ones. With Miami it is all about the sand and the surf. New moms should check out locations such as Miami’s famous South Beach. This long strip of beach has a long boardwalk that new moms can take their little ones for a walk and will find several locations where they can lock away their stroller and head out onto the beach.
