Women's Empowerment/Self Defense Workshops

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, more than 600 women

are assaulted each day. Parks is hosting self-defense workshops to empower

women to feel safer and more confident. Women will learn techniques to fend

off attackers. Plus, it's a great cardio workout.

The workshops will be led by Shihan Ramzy, who is an 8th degree black belt

in Fuji Ryu Jujutsu with over 35 years' experience in the martial arts and

women's self defense. She is the Founder and CEO of the Women's

Empowerment Self Defense Academy (W.E.S.D.A.). She has travelled

internationally conducting self defense workshops in France, the Netherlands

and Canada. For ten years, Shihan Ramzy served as Chief Instructor and

Lecturer for Domestic Violence and Rape Prevention at Princeton University.

She has appeared on 20/20 and in Time Magazine as well as many other

outlets to encourage Women's Empowerment.

2nd Annual "Rock the Red: Bold. Fashion.

Awareness." Fashion Show

Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (CT)

Chicago, IL

The show will be held on March 24, 2011, in commemoration of annual National Women and

Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Rock the RED will also be a celebration of the 2nd anniversary of The Red Pump Project, which

was founded in March 2009 to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and

girls.

The event will begin with a "Happy Hour" at 6:00pm, and Rock the Red beginning promptly at

7:00pm. It will showcase the newest fashions by upcoming designers and boutiques from around

the city.

We will present Keyana Ray with this year’s Ultimate Red Pump Rocker award. In 2006, Keyana

wrote “Reflections,” a movie about how three African-American girls handle the threat of

HIV/AIDS. The film was produced by Gina Price-Blythewood (Love & Basketball), and has been

screened across the country. Keyana is currently a film/video student at Columbia College

Chicago and continues to shed light on the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and families.

So join us for a fantastic evening where we bring together social justice and fashion to Rock

the RED BOLDLY, FASHIONABLY while being AWARE of the impact of HIV/AIDS on our

community.

WinterFest serves to promote wintertime activities for all ages while raising awareness and funds for area nonprofit organizations. Last year 21 non-profit organizations participated, there were over 10,800 attendees at the WinterFest VIII events which raised $336,463 and 226 pounds of food was collected for Channel One. A special "Thank You" goes out to all the caring people who contributed and participated to make WinterFest VIII a success. Get out and enjoy winter by participating in all the fun WinterFest IX events coming up in February.

Well, ladies we’ve been craving positive images of ourselves on screen and it looks like our wish has come true.

A trailer for the new series, “Milk + Honey,” was released today and it looks pretty dope. The series follows four African-American women as they traverse spiritual, professional and romantic journeys in the City of Angels. The show stars legendary actress Debbie Allen, as well as Lance Gross, Bryce Wilson, Faune Chambers, and newcomer Asha Kamali.

“Milk + Honey” is being Executive produced by Idris Elba and the production company Brown Paper Dolls, which is comprised of three dynamic Black women—Dana Gills, Asha Kamali May, and Jeanette McDuffie.

According to Dana Gills, one of the series’ creators, “Milk + Honey” is a labor of love.

“Milk + Honey is a passion project. Working on it for over 3 years, [it was] created because we wanted to showcase positive and diverse images of women of color—[which you] don’t see many on the big or little screen.”

For now, “Milk+Honey” will be available via the web, but the series creators are hoping it gets picked up and aired on TV soon. Let’s keep our fingers crossed because this one looks GOOD!

Health Services and the Fashion Design-Art departments of F.I.T. hosted this year's World AIDS Day Exhibition. Featuring students who designed garments and presented artworks to be displayed during the event.

There was also a keynote from C. Virginia Fields, the President and CEO of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA), poetry, dance, and musical performances. This FAB event also included health organizations, health information & resources.

Rapid HIV testing was available throughout the day!

Spelman Students Beat Out Harvard and MIT for Best Mobile App

I just think it’s important to celebrate and raise up when our folks beat the odds and assumptions about what we’re capable of. In past challenges, students from places like Harvard and MIT won this technical challenge. Check out the hotness:

AT&T is pleased to announce that Jonecia Keels and Jazmine Miller of Spelman College, a historically black liberal arts college for women, have won the 2010 AT&T Big Mobile on Campus Challenge^SM with their next generation e-learning mobile application, HBCU Buddy.
HBCU Buddy is a mobile application created to educate and inform users, including both prospective and current college students, about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across the United States. It is a fully-fledged mobile service application that provides detailed information about each and every HBCU in the nation and integrates all facets of college life.
The application opens with a directory profiling each HBCU with information on academics, admissions, research, student life, alumni, among other details. After selecting a school, students can navigate through the school – literally – by accessing virtual tours of buildings, on-campus videos, and local GPS and directions.
HBCU Buddy can also provide students with customizable social networking features to connect with each other, their school and community. The application connects to social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, and integrates tools such as chat and calendar to help students stay informed. Students can use the application to follow the latest on school club and campus happenings, local events, hot spots around the community, and more.
Jonecia Keels and Jazmine Miller were recognized and awarded a $10,000 scholarship (divided between them) and a mobile device of their choice each at the Higher Ed Board of Advisors Meeting in Miami, Florida, on October 7, 2010.

The President has been keen to foster stronger STEM education for all American students (science, tech, engineering and math) because the jobs of the future will require strong skills in these disciplines. Did you know that there’s a Chinese telecom company entering the U.S. market and they got 8,000 engineers working in one research and development facility in Shanghai? 8000! Where in the U.S. have we got 8000 engineers working on anything except for maybe Google? We continue to lose economic ground to foreign competitors and we need to turn this around to make sure our kids have bright futures in a prosperous nation.

Jonecia and Jazmine are living proof that innovation is not the exclusive domain of the white male geek. There are plenty of us black geeks out there too who need a little more support. Congrats to J and J — you deserve the recognition and that new iPad or iPhone.

Avenue Pink was one of the official Media Partners for the ESSENCE Women's Conference that took place Thursday, Nov. 4 in New York City. The event featured ESSENCE editors, top industry leaders and other inspiring speakers during a one-day empowering conference that promised to give women the tools they need to transform their lives for success!

Avenue Pink gave our listeners a Discount Code and ESSENCE gave a few college graduates an opportunity to experience the conference complimentary, awarding tickets to students from Pace University, Lehman College and Howard University.
