One of the best (and worst) things about WordPress is that it’s constantly being tweaked and upgraded to squash bugs and add new features. It’s great because it’s features and abilities are always current. It’s bad because every time you turn around there is another upgrade you must perform. And when you are responsible for maintaining several WordPress installations, it can become very time consuming.

Thankfully, my host implements what it calls “One-Click Installs”. Basically this means that with one click, I can install or upgrade to the latest, most feature-rich and secure, version of WordPress. But what do you do if your host doesn’t offer such user friendly services?

You can either continue to manually upgrade your WordPress installs or give the InstantUpgrade plugin a try.

How does it work?

The InstantUpgrade plugin performs all of the necessary steps you would normally do by hand, automatically. In their words:

The InstantUpgrade plugin downloads the latest WordPress version from the WordPress server and unpacks it at your server. In the next step, it deletes all of your old WordPress files (except wp-content/ and wp-config.php, language packs are preserved, too) and puts the new files into your WordPress directory. At last, it runs the upgrade script contained it the new WordPress version.

Installation and Usage

The installation of this plugin starts out pretty easy, just download, upload to your plugins directory and activate. From there, however it takes a bit more effort to get set up. After activating the plugin you will need to change the permissions (CHMOD) on a few directories so the plugin will have access to make the appropriate changes during the upgrade. More information on which directories need to be changed can be found in the plugins documentation.

Once you’ve installed the plugin and made all of the necessary configurations, just navigate to “Manage” > “InstantUpgrade” in your WordPress admin and hit “Upgrade my WordPress!” Also, one of the nice things about this plugin is that your not obligated to upgrade to the latest and greatest version. You can choose any version you wish.

I haven’t specifically tried this, but theoretically, I would assume you could also use this plugin downgrade a bit as well, if needed. At least as long as there weren’t any database changes involved.

Conclusion

It may take a bit more time and effort to get setup up than your usual WordPress plugin, but it will save lots of time in the long run. Of course you could just always upgrade to a host that has built in, one-click upgrades available.

If you’re using WordPress as your blogging platform, then chances are you’re also using the WP-Cache plugin that comes standard with the platform. Using the cache plugin is a smart move. Especially if there is even a remote possibility your site will get Dugg, Stumbled, or Slashdotted.

Of course, the cache plugin is not perfect and there are a few drawbacks, but the benefits far outweigh them. Nobody wants their server to crash when that sudden onslaught of traffic comes.

About the WP-Cache Plugin

WP-Cache is an extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database. WP-Cache allows to serve hundred of times more pages per second, and to reduce the response time from several tenths of seconds to less than a millisecond.

The New WordPress Super Cache Plugin

While the standard WP-Cache plugin has been a staple among WordPress users, it hasn’t been updated or improved in quite some time. That is until now.

Donncha O Caoimh has taken the original WP-Cache plugin, made some upgrades and released the WP-Super-Cache plugin.

Previously, one of the best ways survive getting dugg, was to generate a static version of the page getting traffic. Of course, this only works if you can anticipate it. Something that doesn’t happen very often.

Essentially, this is what the WP-Super-Cache plugin does automatically. It basically turns your dynamic site into a static one. But unlike MovableType, static cache pages are generated as needed and update regularly. It’s the perfect hybrid of WordPress and MovableType’s caching systems.

Changes and Upgrades from WP-Cache

1. A plugin and hooks system. A common complaint with WP Cache was that hacking was required to make it work nicely with other plugins. Now you can take advantage of the simple plugin system built in to change how or when pages are cached. Use do_cacheaction() and add_cacheaction() like you would with WordPress hooks. Plugins can add their own options to the admin page too.

2. Works well with WordPress MU in VHOST or non-VHOST configuration. Each blog’s cache files are identified to improve performance.

3. Normal WP-Cache files are now split in two. Meta files go in their own directory making it much faster to scan and update the cache.

4. Includes this WP-Cache and protected posts fix.

5. Automatically disable gzip compression in WordPress instead of dying.

6. As Akismet and other spam fighting tools have improved, the cache will only be invalidated if a comment is definitely not spam.

My Results

I’ve been using and testing the WP-Super-Cache plugin on another site for about a week now and I can see a noticable difference. That site hasn’t received the amount of traffic that comes with making the front page of Digg, but it gets a fair amount of steady traffic. And even under normal traffic levels, the page load times have improved.

I’d like to see, first hand, how this holds up under a massive influx of traffic, but for now I’m pleased with the faster load times.

Top100 lists have always been an intriguing look into what makes a super user. Whether they be the top money makers, top digg users or top whatever, they’re always fascinating.

No matter what they category, a “top” list almost always exist somewhere, official or not. But there’s one “top” list that has been missing, StumbleUpon. It’s no secret that StumbleUpon keeps statistics on their users, they’ve just always been a closely guarded secret. That is until now.

Muhammad Saleem of ProNet Advertising has created the first unofficial StumbleUpon Top100 list. StumbleRank is a Top100 list of StumbleUpon users who have stumbled the most pages, photos, and videos, submitted the most reviews, and have the largest number of “fans.”

From the StumbleRank site:
Welcome to StumbleRank, where we rank top StumbleUpon users for fun and competition. Check out the list to see who the movers and shakers are on the best and most fun socially driven site around. And make new friends while you’re at it!

By default, the top StumbleUpon users list is sorted by the number of stumbled pages, but you can also sort them by the number of photos, videos, fans or reviews. And links are provided to each users StumbleUpon page.

This list is unofficial and still in beta (at best) so don’t expect it to be a complete, all inclusive list of StumbleUpon users. Users are only added to the list if someone submits their username. StumbleRank then checks the StumbleUpon profile and updates the list.

As time goes by, this list catches mainstream attention and more users are added, StumbleRank will no doubt be a fairly reliable measure of top users.

The latest to take the reigns is Moshu. Moshu has taken the Custom Query String (CQS) plugin, along with Andy’s UTW integration idea, and made it all work with the WordPress 2.3 and it’s new tagging function.

The Custom Query String plugin for WordPress was originally developed by Matt Reed and is one of my favorite plugins. As far as I’m concerned it’s a must have plugin and honestly, I’m not sure why its functionality is not part of the default WordPress program.

If you’ve never heard of the Custom Query String (CQS) plugin, then you should take a moment to familiarize yourself with it and make sure it’s on your radar. You can read my previous article on the Custom Query String Plugin for more details on why I use it.

In short, this plugin allows you to modify the default number of posts displayed by the Wordpress loop before it creates a new page.

When I first found CQS, Matt Reed had already discontinued support and development for the plugin. A disheartening revelation, but the plugin worked fantastically so I wasn’t concerned. Since then, a few attempts and reviving it have been made.

The first to take the helm was Andy Beard. Andy made a few simple changes and added support for UTW which allowed those that used the UTW plugin to specify how many posts appeared on the tag pages. However, with the release of WordPress 2.3 and the rework of the entire category system, the CQS plugin once again was in need of updating. Not to mention UTW was now pretty much obsolete with the addition of tagging in WordPress.

The latest to take the reigns is Moshu. Moshu has taken the Custom Query String (CQS) plugin, along with Andy’s UTW integration idea, and made it all work with the WordPress 2.3 and it’s new tagging function.

Here’s a look at the new Custom Query String (CQS) admin:

This is a fantastic plugin and I sincerely hope that it has found a new home and will continue to be supported and developed (or integrated in to WordPress by default). If this plugin is not already in your arsenal, I would highly recommend it.

Download the Custom Query String plugin.

Early this morning John Reese enthusiastically announced the release of the long awaited “Phase 2″ of BlogRush. It seems they have put quite a bit of work into it and made some significant upgrades. Let’s take a look at what’s new.

Dashboard

I’ll admit I’m a sucker for stats and BlogRush definitely delivers on this front. BlogRush not only provides all the stats you would expect, they also look fantastic.

The stats displayed on the dashboard include “Credits Earned From Your Traffic”, “Credits Earned From Your Referral Network”, “Where Your Credits Come From”, “Current Bloggers In Your Network”, “Current Credit Balance”, a breakdown of your referrals by level, a “Credit Earnings Report”, and a breakdown of impressions and clicks for you 12 most recent posts.

Reports

The reports section is nice feature for those who wish to review stats over a specified time period. Stats include credits earned from your traffic, from your referrals traffic, referrals in your network and a breakdown of impressions and clicks from posts shown during the specified time period.

Filters

I don’t remember if this feature was available before today’s release or not. Either way, it’s worth mentioning as the majority of your control over the BlogRush widget is found here.

In this section there are 3 options: “Control”, “Keyword” and “URL”. Using these filters will allow you to prevent one of your articles from being syndicated across the network, or prevent an article or even an entire URL from being displayed in the widget on your site.

Conclusion

BlogRush definitely looks better, but will it start to generate the amount of traffic that could be categorized as a rush? I like the idea and it looks as if John Reese and crew are putting in the effort, but I still have my doubts. Let’s face it, click through rates are horrible. Sure one could probably improve them a bit with better titles and placement, but it seems like an awful lot of effort and real estate for something that has yet to prove itself.

There are still improvements to come, including new categories, so I’m going to stick with it awhile longer. I do like the idea and would like to see it succeed, but it needs to step up soon. Otherwise the rate at which people are jumping ship will increase and their won’t be much of network left.

What do you think of the BlogRush improvements? Has your CTR increased/decreased since the launch? Will BlogRush ever perform the way we all want it to?

With all of the false alarms and mis information about when, or if, Google was going to update PageRank, I was beginning to wonder if Average Joe Blogger would ever get a rank. Or if I would be destined to see N/A forever. Well, apparently the wait is over. I just check my PageRank and much to my surprise Average Joe Blogger now has a PageRank of 4.

It’s no 7, but for a blog that’s only a few months old, I think it’s pretty respectable. If you haven’t checked your PageRank lately, you should go see where you now stand with Google. iWebTool has a great tool for checking PageRank.

Has your rank been updated? Was Google kind to your blog or not?

First of all let me apologize for the lack of content in the last couple of weeks. As many of you regular readers know I was on vacation for awhile and while I was initially planning on at least writing a few posts during that time, I never got around to it. There were a lot of vacation activities that kept me away from the computer (more than I had anticipated) and the time I did spend in front of the computer was busy with answering emails and general upkeep.

Thankfully Steven Snell from Vandelay Website Design and Chris Chris Jacobson from Money Making Scoop wrote a couple guests post to keep things somewhat moving along. A special thanks to both of them. If you haven’t visited their sites, I’d recommend it. Their both in my RSS reader.

My goal was to get back into the blogging routine and start posting daily content again once we got back from vacation. Unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet and probably won’t for a little while yet.

After we got back from vacation we were presented with an incredible opportunity that just couldn’t be passed up. I will get into all of the details at a later time, once everything calms down a bit, but for now I just wanted to let you know what was going on. I’ll still be writing new content and finding new plugins and tools to share with you, it just won’t daily for the next week or so.

I’m a firm believer that one of the best ways to get noticed, attract readers and develop a community is to link and link often. The more link love you give, the more link love you will receive.

As a result of this philosophy, I’ve incorporated several things into this blog including a weekly list of links to articles I think readers might find interesting, the Top Commenter’s plugin and removing the nofollow tag from comments left by repeat commenter’s. All of these things help bring in new readers and encourage comments and participation in discussions.

Along the same lines as the Top Commenter’s plugin, except with tag cloud goodness, comes the Community Cloud Plugin for WordPress. I recently ran across this plugin and love the idea.

What is the Community Cloud Plugin?

The Community Cloud is a plugin that was recently developed by the good folks at Web Addicts. The plugin displays a “tag cloud” of all the people in your community (blog) who have added value by commenting and participating in discussions. The more a person has commented, the bigger and bolder their link is. Here is an example of what it looks like:

You can also see a live version of the plugin by visiting the Average Joe Blogger Community page.

Installation of the this plugin is pretty straightforward and is basically the same as any other WordPress plugin. Just upload and activate. However, be aware that some users have noted it was necessary to change the permissions on the plugin files in order to make it work. I had absolutely no problems.

To use the plugin simply create a new page and add
<!–community cloud–>
somewhere in the body. Or add it to your sidebar by using the sidebar widget.

Community Cloud Admin

Configuring the “tag cloud” to fit within your blog design is a breeze. The following items can be configured via the WordPress admin.

Excluded Authors - enter any blog authors that you do not want to appear in the community cloud. Can also be used to filter out individual commenter’s.

Commenter Threshold - the number of comments a person must write before appearing in the community cloud.

Font - specify the minimum and maximum font sizes in either pixels or % as well as font colors.

Order of Commenters - specify the order in which the community cloud will display commenter names.

Conclusion

The Community Cloud Plugin is a great way to give a little extra link love to those who help keep your blog going by commenting and participating in discussions. I love the idea and I’ve added it here on Average Joe Blogger.

What are your thoughts? Is this something you would consider adding to your blog?

Download the Community Cloud Plugin
