I can't believe that it is the first of August already. My Son got married this past weekend and with all the hubbub the time has flown.

Averylee Designs is back in full swing this week, working on orders and getting ready for upcoming seasons.

School time is just around the corner. I am excited to promote our Book Slings, Floor Poufs and Letter pillows to get your reading corner set and cozy for your young readers and writers. I love custom orders, selecting your colors and vinyl cut is going to be so much fun this year!

Book slings are great way to hang books at the perfect height for your young ones to reach. We provide casing on both ends to hang on a double curtain rod. Using sturdy home décor fabric for a long lasting product. I can get creative with vinyl and add any saying or word you like.

Floor poufs are another great way to help your kiddo's relax during story time. Filling them with poly fill keeps them light weight for carrying and squishy for storing. They can be made to match or coordinate with your room décor.

Let's finish the area with letter pillows. These are great for beginning readers and can be made in any size, vinyl color and with or without numbers (scrabble look).

I can also provide room valances or curtains to match.

It's been a long time since we have provided anything on our blog page, but We're Back! The company changed hands back in 2014 so I thought it was about time I introduced myself and start sharing some fun facts and ideas with you.

I joined Sheryl back in 2013 adding some new product to her store. I developed a line of Pouf/Ottoman covers and book slings with the nursery line in mind. Sheryl had another shop on Etsy that had taken off like fireworks and she decided that she needed to let go of the Home Décor Shop. Here is where I come say, "Sister Cathy to the rescue."

We have been busy creating at Averylee Designs with several fall and autumn decorations to choose from. Our most current holiday item is a Thanksgiving banner, just in time for the family gathering. Banners have become the perfect way to dress your holiday decor from accents...
on the fireplace mantel, shelves, walls, doorways, staircases or even used as a fun way to photograph a family portrait. Last spring our bunny banner was used by a couple of different photographers in their photo studios. We use a heavy card stock that is layered for durability which means you can use it for years to come.

Candy Buffet - Wedding Reception

Candy Buffet - Averylee Designs

I recently attended the wedding of my Goddaughter, Allison to her handsome groom, Travis, in Texas. The setting was stunning under a gazebo on a lake. I love weddings and was brought to tears as I saw the hope and excitment of these precious young people pledge their lives to each other and to their heavenly Father in a covenant of marriage.

For the reception I volunteered to create tags and banners for the reception candy buffet. My friend, the mother of the bride, had ordered an assortment of purple color candy in varying heights, color, texture and flavors. She purchased several glass jars throughout the months leading up to the wedding knowing that she wanted to create a candy treat feast not only for the eye but for the tummy as well. Most of the candy was ordered on-line and sent directly to her house, eliminating chaotic running around to find the right color of candy. From the photos below you will see that the jars were arranged in an attractive placement including adding boxes under some of the jars to add dimension to the buffet.

The tags and banners were cut using my Cricut machine and embellished with rhinestones and feathers. I also used a glitter tulle' for the banner. I decided to hand write the names of the candies to eliminate the need for my friend to send a detailed list and add to her already full plate of preparations. What was helpful was having her do a preliminary staging of the buffet, photograph it with her phone, and text me several pictures of the display so that during the set-up I referred to the photos and left her to overseeing other areas of event set-up. I also had her use post-a-notes and write the name of each candy and stick that to the jar. This was very helpful when I went to write the names on the decorative tags and again when I set up the buffet at the reception site.

Pictures say it all and I think you will agree that this was one fantastic, delicious and delightful candy buffet. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Hunt - may your marriage be blessed with grace, unconditional love and endless moments of happiness. ~ Sheryl

Baby Quilt Complete

Last posting we shared ideas about how to incorporate our line of baby quilts in your Childs room. This time I want to share with you the quilt that I recently completed for my granddaughters room. Below are several photos that my daughter took to share with you the quilt as well as the inspiration that it evoked in the room. Once my daughter selected her main paint color her very good friend, as a gift, painted the tree mural, add the silk flowers and embellished the branches with stones and a letter K (for my granddaughters name). All of this was done with fabric swatches from the quilt as we live a distance from each other and found it really easy to cut scrap pieces and send them for the color inspiration. When I visited I made the crib skirt from our own design in a super easy, three sided, pleated design, attached by velcro strips - did I mention it was super easy??? Anyhoo, we know that baby Kindelynn will be able to enjoy this cheerful room for many, many years to come:)

This is one of my favorites! I love pinwheels and polka dots and the color combination that this adorable quit offers. An interview with our newest contributor to Averylee Kids, jewelry artisian, Kacy Ritter, who is specializing in custom order jewelry pieces for Mommy and child.

I grew up in Seattle Washington. I have two young adult children and they are both very gifted artists. My hobbies are photography turned profession, traveling and gardening. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

My inspiration for jewelry design came about from a very challenging time in my life. In May of 2010 I was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and I started treatment in October 2010 to February 2011.

My husband gave me a bracelet as a graduation from chemotherapy. It is an orange beaded bracelet that represented my cancer color. I loved that bracelet. The more I looked at it I became inspired to recreate it. I took several beads that my daughter had left behind when she left for college, and my sister sent me a shoe box full of seed beads so week 5 of treatment I set up the items on a table and began to create a bracelet that I liked. My favorite mix of beaded bracelets changes with the wind. I love the last one more than the one before. I choose bead styles and colors to fit my mood or the personality of the newest recipient. My mom requests pastels, sisters get purple black and pink, nieces get school colors, a bride received pearl and champagne and a new mommy received pink mommy and me matching ones. I don’t think any two are alike with the exception I created for a team that walked in the Avon Walk. They all had similar bracelets but seven very unique and sentimental statements. I prefer to make each bracelet with someone in mind. I can put the jewelry together as I pray or put happy energy into making them. It just feels right when I have a person in mind when I design jewelry pieces.

I have always taken apart jewelry and recreated another fabulous piece from it. So creating something from scratch is new and something fun for me.

I continue to fight this cancer and want to make bracelets as therapy for my recovery. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them.

We are so excited to announce our newest contributor to Averylee Kids, Michelle LaLonde. Michelle is a talented quilter and has already created four beautiful quilts for our shop - one of which has already sold! Below is an interview with Michelle so that you can get to know her.

I'm 52 years old and have been married to my husband, Ed for almost 25 years. We have 4 children and 3 grandsons. Our oldest 2 children (and 3 grandchildren) live a few hours away but we get to visit our precious grandboys one weekend a month or so! We live in a farmhouse that was built in 1910. In 1918, the owners planted a field of daffodils which have been offered for sale (U-Pick) for many, many years. They are 50 cents a dozen (still!) and we get such delight from watching little kids who come pick flowers for mommy or gramma :) My hobbies are reading, running, transcribing almost 60 years worth of my great-grandmas daily diary and quilting (of course!). I am in a quilting group which has met for about 11 years. These ladies have taught me everything I know and we have been there for each other through kids growing up, health issues, and all the other special events in our lives. I thank God everyday for the many blessings in my life!

I learned to sew when I was in high school. A very patient friend tried to teach me to sew clothes and I made some outfits for my little nieces, but everything changed when I made my first quilt in 1987. I really didn't know the basics of quilting yet, but was able to throw together a cute little blue flannel/heart quilt for my daughter. Quilting didn't really become an obsession until I joined my current quilting group and saw some of the beautiful creations they made. They all have different styles, so I've learned a bit about several different types of quilting. Oftentimes, a couple of us will be making the same quilt at the same time, but they always end up beautiful, but quite different from each other.

When I make quilts for others, I usually let them choose from several of my favorite patterns and also choose a basic color scheme. When I don't have a recipient in mind, I often pick a pattern I haven't done before (for the challenge). As far as the fabric, I usually have some colors in mind, but I do love to browse the fabric stores, too. Sometimes I change my mind completely while I'm there! I love polka dots and stripes, so those types of fabrics are in most of my quilts.
My favorite part of the process is the hand/machine quilting I do after the quilt is sandwiched. I'm convinced that this final step is what "makes" the quilt and I really enjoy thinking through what I want the quilt to look like and watching the change take place. Overall, I just wake up in the morning excited about what I'm working on that day and making plans for future projects! Hopefully, I can express my talent, joy and love for this process through the quilts I make for Averylee Kids.

"Girly" Baby Shower - Tea, Pink, Polka Dots and Birds

Notice the way we used dessert dishes for the individual cake pedestals and the jar filled with glass stones to hold the tree branches.

Each of the baby's names were written on individual cakes for the mommy's. Notice the paper hearts are sprinkled everywhere.

This tea set is from Grammie's wedding 33 years ago.

Guest party favors where boxed loose leaf tea.

We carried out the graphic design on the cupcakes, banner and guest party favors. This design was purchased on Etsy.

The bird house were painted in two different shades of pink and then lightly sanded. They were embellished with hearts and ribbon that was cut from netting.

We also accented with tissue balls ~ VERY EASY to make.

This was such a delightfull event
- a baby shower for my future granddaughters! After six grandsons both my daughter in-law and daughter are due within three weeks of each other and they are both having girls (can you give me a whoot whoot!). Butter Stars - For your holiday table!

Here is a quick idea for your holiday table!

What you will need to make butter stars:

A firm surface - I used a cookie sheet
Butter - softened to room temperature
Wax Paper
Small Cookie cutter

Be sure butter is at room temperature.

Spread butter on your firm surface. Do not spread to thin. Put in refrigerator for at least 20 minutes or until firm.

Using a small cookie cutter, cut the hardened butter and place on your dish.

Layer cut out butter with wax paper between layers. Return to refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

Snowflake Tutorial

Holiday Tip #6 – Create Snowflakes

Many years ago I was inspired by a friends’ creative display of snowflakes hanging from her ceiling in her home. She graciously sat down and showed me how to cut-out my own snowflakes. I couldn’t wait to show my children and have them join me in creating our own snowflake wonderland. It turned out that our home needed A LOT of snowflakes in order to accomplish the task of covering our ceiling and creating a snow flurry. It took a couple of Christmases before our project was complete, but the fun we had along the way was well worth the effort!

Gather together; copy paper, scissors

Follow the step-by-step picture instructions

Start cutting on the folded side and DO NOT cut all the way through the outside folds.

Tape to windows, hang on ceilings, use as doilies, use on cards, etc…

These are the perfect craft to have your “I’m bored” school age children create in the coming days of winter break. Invite visiting friends and relatives to make a snowflake, be sure to have each snowflake signed and dated by their creator. Each year when the snowflakes are displayed we enjoy reminiscing about the creator of each snowflake. ~ Sheryl

Pumpkin Spice Muffins

This is the EASIEST recipe I have ever made. My daughter shared this recipe with me a few years back and every fall I make several different batches - depending on the event. This past weekend was a trip with three of my grandchildren and three of my adult children to a family event. It was a wonderful weekend sharing a hotel room with everyone - we all survived:)

1 16 ounce can of pumpkin
1 box spice cake mix
1 cup chocolate chips

Thoroughly mix all 3 ingredients together - yep, that's it for ingredients. Trust me they will bake into some very delicious muffins. Fill your muffin tin about 2/3 full. Bake at *350 for 20 minutes or until they are firm to the touch. Cool and enjoy!

Halloween Decoration - BOO!

I was inspired when I recently visited my local craft store to create this Halloween decoration. What I didn't like was the price and expense for each item it would take to create. So...I took a trip to my local Goodwill Store and found the three section black distressed frame - I know what a lucky gal I was and it only cost me $2.50 (price on the back was $19.99). Then I purchased a sheet of scrapbook paper for $.79 cents and headed home to create my own inexpensive Halloween decoration.

Gather Supplies:
Three section frame
Scrapbook paper
Printed letters B O O (I used Modern No. 20 font the size of 250)
Scissors
Glue stick
Glitter Paint
Paint Brush
Cutting board or mat
Exacto Knife or other sharp edge cutter

After printing the letters BOO I carefully cut them from the stock paper I used. I printed the letter on standard copy paper but once I applied the glitter I wished I had used a heavier weight of paper. To cut the insides of the letter use an exacto knife cutting an X and then return to cutting with your scissors. When cutting around a curve, such as the B, turn the paper as you cut for a closer, non-jagged edge.

I found that the standard black ink from my computer wasn't as dark as I wanted so I used a black felt pen to color over it. Once I colored the letters I brushed on silver glitter.

While the glitter is drying cut your scrap book paper the dimensions of the frame. I actually made a transparent cut-out of the dimensions so that I could choose how I wanted the pattern on the scrapbook paper to look behind each letter.

Next I measured and put a dot on the scrapbook paper where I wanted the letters to adhere.

Once the glitter is dry, flip over your letters and apply an adhesive, I used a glue stick. Carefully apply the letters to the scrapbook paper and press down to smooth out.

Now, all you have to do is insert them into your frame and ENJOY!

Zucchini Cake Recipe

It's that time of year when everyone is giving away zucchini and we all need some inspiration as to what to do with it besides making bread. Here is a deliciously moist cake recipe that my family has enjoyed for many years. I obtained this recipe from our local newspaper. As you can see by the photo below this recipe has survived many years of delicious tasting:) The recipe box was a wedding gift over 33 years ago. Chocolate Chip Zucchini Cake

1/2 Cup Soft Margarine or Butter
1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
1 3/4 Cups Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 Cup Buttermilk*
2 1/2 Cups Flour
4 Tbls. Cocoa
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Cloves
1/2 tsp. Salt
2 Cups Unpeeled Grated Zucchini
1/2 Cup Chocolate Chips
1/4 Cup Chopped Nuts (optional)

Cream butter, oil and sugar together.Add eggs, vanilla and buttermilk. Blend thoroughly. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Blend with creamed mixture.
Stir in zucchini. Spoon into greased and floured 9x13 baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts.

Zucchini Cake - Chocolate Chocolate Chip

Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 45 minutes or until done.

Hubby loved his serving!

This recipe freezes well!
* no buttermilk on hand - no problem - mix 1 cup of milk (left at room temperature) with 1 Tbls. vinegar and use this sour milk in place of the buttermilk.

Summer Beauty

I was in my backyard and the miniature roses were looking pretty shabby and heavily laden with blossoms. I decided to trim them up and realized I had some beautiful vase material. It got me thinking of days gone by when I would have to use whatever I found in the house that would hold water as a vase because I hadn't invested in vases (food was more important to the budget at the time, lol). The pink roses reminded me of a teapot that my sweet husband purchased for me when we visited Prague during our 25th wedding anniversary "2nd honeymoon". I quickly brought the flowers into the house, dusted off the teapot from the china hutch, added warm water to the pot, trimmed the roses and viole' a beautiful display. The second picture is of a single gladiolas that has been trimmed back for several days, mainly because I can't stand to throw flowers away, and just kept finding smaller containers to display the shortening stem of flowers :)

Hopscotch Cookie Recipe

Many years ago my mother-in-law gave me the most wonderful cookbook created by members of her church. I'd share the cookbook name but after 20 years of use the front cover is worn off. Below is an easy and delicious cookie/candy recipe. You might want to make a double batch as they will go quickly.

1cup peanut butter
1 pkg. (6 oz) butterscotch bits
1 pkg. (6 oz) chocolate chips
2 pans (3 oz) Chinese noodles
2-3 cups miniature marshmallows

Melt first three ingredients together in top of a double boiler. Mix with remaining ingredients and drop onto waxed paper covered cookie sheets. Keep chilled until served. YUM! Submitted by Doris Garnhart

Holiday Tip #13...Button Hair Accessories

Buttons come in virtually every shape and color, plus they are sold by the bag for next to nothing...yippee!

Pick up some plain hair clips, barrettes, and combs...tie a piece of co-ordinating thread through each button that you are using for your clip or comb, knot in the back so that the button will appear to have been sewn on. Use a hot-glue gun to secure the buttons to the hair accessory, layer the buttons to fully cover the unfinished barrette or comb base.

As a gift...clip a few button accessories onto a ribbon then lay it in a box lined with tissue for a girlfriend, niece or any little girl who loves to be pretty.

Recently my darling daughter, her husband, and precious granddaughter were going out, they saw an older gentleman sitting at a local park, when they came home they noticed that the man was still sitting at the park, still looking sad. they decided that they would pack a lunch and bring it to him...

off they went to the park...the gentleman, still there...

my daughter explained that they saw him sitting alone on the park bench when they left only to see that he was still there on their return, she thought he might like a little homemade lunch...this small gesture was received with heartfelt thanks...

Holiday Tip #12 - SUPER Fudge

Below is a super rich and yummy recipe offered by one of our cooking instructors, Kathy Rodriquez. ENJOY!

2 cups sugar 1 5oz, can evaporated milk 12 large marshmallows
1/2 cup butter or margarine 6 oz (1 cup) semi-sweet 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
1 teas. vanilla chocolate chips Dash salt

In a 2 qt saucepan over med. heat, mix sugar, milk, marshmallows, butter, and salt. Stir constantly till mixture comes to a full boil. Cook and stir 5 minutes more. Take off heat. Stir in vanilla and chocolate till fully melted. Pour into greased 8-9 inch square pan. Sprinkle nuts over top and gently press into chocolate. For a real taste treat, sprinkle crushed peppermint candy canes over the top and gently press in. Refrigerate for at least 12 hours. For best results, keep refrigerated when not serving.
