EQUAVIA: 1:400 Model comparison Lufthansa Herpa VS Dragon Wings

OBJECTIVE

-This is your chance to vote for likes and dislikes of the manufacturer's effort to detail. I am just gonna hand you some closeups along with some real life images courtesy of www.airliners.net after 15 days of voting the superlative to detail will be announced. Right under the images I may add a few specks which can not be recognized from the image like rotating wheels etc.

-Both are aircrafts B747-400's of German airline "Lufthansa". Since it is a quite popular airline I figures it would be of interest.

GENERAL DETAILS

Herpa has a textured detail on the engine coils wings while Dragon is plain. There are more details on the cargo doors of Herpa, while Dragon tilting wing gears. Dragon's windows are finer outlined where herpa used a plain grey. Herpa's type font for the Lufthansa Lettering is more bold and looks closer to reality, yet Dragon managed to get the blue color better. Herpa again made a better tone of Lufthansa yellow. Same goes for the grey of the Star Alliance logo, where dragon made that too dark.
The cockpit windows of Dragon look better, while Herpa has added more detail, like the top strobe lights etc

After being reregistered she was leased to Continental Air Lines and then was withdrawn from use in Jamaury 2001. Avensa then leased the aircraft and reregistered it as YV-60C and then was leased yet again to Santa Barbara Airlines in September 2002

PH-DEK 46121 was to be to Philippine Air lines as RP-C827 buit this was not taken up and was then delivered to KLM in December 1969 as Ph-DEK and was named David Livingstone. In May 1972 it was then leased to Philippine Airlines. April 1984 saw a change of ownership to Daedalus Corporation and was reregistered as TF-FLV.and was leased to Icelandair and then sold to them in November 1984. Aer Turas then brought the aircraft and reregistered it as EI-CAK where she was converted to a DC-8-63F. July 1994 saw yet another owner Aerolease Finance Corporation and was then leased to ATI until August 2003 and was sold to Skytrade International Enterprises in September 2003 then to Race Aviation Corporation in May 2004 and then leased to Johnsons Air in July 2004

62-6000 18461 was delivered to the United States Air Force on October 9^th 1962 to the 1246 ATW. This aircraft was used as Air Force One for the President of the USA and became part of the 89MAW at Andrews Air Force Base. In May 1998 it was retired and put on display at the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum where she still is now in her splendid glory.

72-7000 20630 was delivered to the USAF on August 9^th 1972 as N8459. On November 15^th 1972 she was re-serialled as 72-27000 where she became the sister ship for 62-6000 as part of the Air Force One cavalcade of the 89MAW at Andrews Air Force Base. She was then retired from service in August 2001 and preserved at Simi Valley California.

N235WA 22859 was to be delivered to Sudan Airways as ST-AIB as White Nile but this was not taken up by Sudan Airways and then this aircraft was offered to TAME as N4562N and again not taken up by them and then was eventually delivered to Western Air Lines in May 1984 and then merged with Delta Air Lines in April 1987. This airframe was then withdrawn from use in September 2001 and stored at Goodyear Arizona After being sold in the same month to BCI 2002-02 LLC it was then leased to Delta Air Lines in September 2002

This is an event that is NOT just for experienced spotters but for ANYONE crazy enough to inhale Jet fuel fumes for several hours and stay put to shoot any airplane coming in or going out.

The summer vacations are up next so this makes it even easier! Most of us will be flying to our vacation destination so don't miss this chance to participate in this WINGS900 event.

Most experienced spotters can tell you that it's not just skills that make the perfect shot. But also coincidence and luck! Being at the right place and the right time.

You have 3 full months to give in your photo submissions. Most images will be posted at the WINGS900 SPOTTERS FESTIVAL 2011 thread. You just hold on to them until I tell you when to post

On October 2011 the best images of EACH spotter will be placed in a voting poll for the BEST spotter image 2011 to be announced 2 months later.

The winner will receive a DELTA AIRLINES B737-3L9 1:200 of the HERPA PREMIUM series
right OUT of the ALEXAKOS collection!
ONLY 3 simple rules:
1. Images MUST be shot by your self and belong to YOU!

N144AA / 47848 was deliver to Air New Zealand as ZK-NZN in January 1974 after serving with Air New Zealand for four years and having a short lease to Malaysian Airlines in this time she was retired from use. ZK-NZN was then reregistered as N821L and was sold to International Lease Finance Corporation ILFC in April 1981 and flew with Western Airlines until September 1983 when joining Air Pacific until December 1984 when she was retired. In January 1985 N821L was purchased by American Airlines and was reregistered as N144AA a month later. After fifteen years of service with American Airlines N144AA was withdrawn from use and stored at Mojave California in December 2000 only to be sold to Telesis Technologies LLC in April 2002.

N1805 / 45899 was destined for Pan American Grace but the option of this airframe was not taken up and was delivered to Braniff on September 291967 In 1972 and advertising executive George Gordon had an idea to paint a real size aircraft and as a tribute to Alexander Calder and his mobiles and was asked to undertake this work. George Gordon flew to Sache in France with a model aircraft and over lunch he approached Calder and asked if he would paint a plane? The reply was that he did not paint toys and then it was explained that this would be a real size aircraft. Calder agreed to this and was introduced to Harding Lawrence in 1972 and then the relationship between Braniff and Calder was formed until his untimely death in 1976. N1805 was one of two aircraft which Calder painted with a third planned which was never finished. The DC-8-62 flew with two different designs of engines this model representing the first design. The original model from Inflight had the engines painted when Calder repainted to engines at the Paris Air Show in 1975.

N17321 / 18825 was destined t be with Pan American World Airways as N798PA but the option was not taken up and the airframe was then delivered to Continental Airlines as N17321 in August 1964 where she flew until May 1973 when sold to China Airlines and was reregistered as B-1832. In June 1985 B-1832 was purchased by Allen Aircraft Corporation in June 1985 and was registered N987AA in February 1986 GAS Air Nigeria purchased the aircraft and then leased the aircraft to Dairo Air Services. Still being leased by Dairo Air Services the aircraft was sold to Equator Leasing Inc in January 1988 but was unfortunately lost in November 1992 in Kenya.

HB-IIQ / 30752 started life as N1786B and was reregistered as N1026G and was delivered to Boeing Business Jets on December 21 1999 and was reregistered from N1026G to HB-IIQ. On the same day this aircraft was then purchased by Matela Offshore Leasing and was then immediately leased by Private Air. Iyt was then subleased to Lufthansa in June 2002 and then to Gulf Air in 2010.

YU-AKE / 21037 was delivered to Jugoslovenski Aerotransport JAT in December 1974 and was leased to Air Commerce from December 1991 and was returned to JAT in January 1992. In May of this year it was leased to Genius Air and again was returned to JAT in August 1992 only to be withdrawn from JAT service in the year 2000

YU-AKJ / 22394 started with Boeing as NN8281V and was delivered to Jugoslovenski Aerotransport JAT on December 15^th 1980 and served with JAT until she was withdrawn from use and stored in 2000.

EQUAVIA: Results are in! Easyjet's BEST replicator in 1:400 is...

A while ago a fellow collector wished to purchase off my collection an Easyjet A319, wondering which one looked better. So he asked for my opinion. Instead of offering my enlightenment which might have had a touch of misleading trying to sell him the uglier one, I figured I let you folks vote for that. I placed those beauties nose to
nose and butt to butt, shot them sideways, from over head, right on the face and belly up which in my opinion looked quite painful. Yes I know. I need to see a therapist about it.

I found interesting the numerous differences of opinions in each forum. How a crowd chooses to join communities where there is a mutual interest and taste. Eighty two votes were casted and the overall result claims the GEMINI JETS WINNER of the polls.

What seemed to make that difference was for one the correct tone of Orange and secondly the well placed logo on the engine coil. While Greenbox had a technical issue deriving from effort to upgrade realism with the addition of that little winglet on the engine coil named "strake", that forced the logo to go way lower.

The total for Gemini jets was 46 votes while the Greenbox was slightly behind with 36.
At 400scalehangar.net, the voting came to a tie of 17 each. The diecastaircrftforum.com members gave the Gemini model a 2 vote advance with 13-11 while wings900.com screamed out loud the preference to Geminis result with double the votes 16-8. The member who wanted to buy the model from me, chose the Gemini jets model even before the votes were in. Just looking at the images.

If the question was back at me... I like them both! Sure they have differences, and I would not place them in my diorama that close together. but as you can see... I BOUGHT THEM BOTH! I hope this comparison was interesting for you and I am looking forward to feedback for further projects. Thank you

In February 1993 it was reregistered once again to N792AT and was leased to American Transair until June 2002 when it was withdrawn from use and stored at Roswell New Mexico. In September 2003 it was leased to Astar Air Cargo in September 2003 and was then converted to a freighter in January 2004.

N762AL / 21954 was one of the last planes to be delivered to Allegheny Airlines in August 1979 and was then to US Air in October 1979 after the change of name for the airline. In October 1988 it was reregistered as N755US and was then sold to First Security Bank of Utah in December 1988 while still being leased by US Air. In January 1989 it was sold to Integrated Resources Corporation still being leased by US Air until November 1993 where it was withdrawn from use and stored. In November 1994 American Trans Air leased the aircraft and this was reregistered in October 1995 and was brought by American Tans Air in March 1998 and then sold to BATA leasing in May 2001 and was withdrawn from use and stored in Roswell New Mexico and was then converted to a freighter in February 2004 and was then leased to Astar Air Cargo in the same month. .

GREENBOX has rolling gear, Gemini doesn't. Gemini has more detail on the doors, while Greenbox has it on the wheel bay doors. Greenbox's orange is darker and has more bleed where Gemini is lighter and finer.Gemini's fuselage is thicker while Greenbox has thicker Engine coils. Gemini's Top wing color has a better metallic look and the engines have better sticker and logo detail placement while Greenbox has the strakes (small wigletson engines) actually extending.

Another classic American airliner was replicated by the artists of Gemini Jets about a year back. he mould as well as the diecasted livery and details truly bring out the best of this historic bird. Being one of the most loved trijet aircraft, the B727 carries memories of most of us. In this 1970's color scheme, N4734 "Elaine" has many nice details including the antennas and cargo bay doors. There was what felt like rubber cement on the wings on both sides and one on one if the engines.For these old eyes it looks like GJ captured the colors properly and the Sun King is correct

On September 1;st 1968, Boeing registered its msn 19454 B727-200 as N4734, handing it over to National Airlines. As it seems, "Elaine" had captured the hearts of many as we see nostalgic comments next to images taken by spotters at the time. National had an incident with this aircraft when on August of 1979 it taxied off the apron and into the grass, however no further details have been recorded. In 1980 the aircraft was handed over to pan am when it was painted into the 1970's paint scheme later on to PanAm's final colors. On Wednesday January 26th 1994, the aircraft was scrapped by General Electric Capital Corp. and deregistrated at Miami.

The DC-8 has quite a large number of fans as it turns out to be a classic juts like the Boeing 707. Airlines had still their retro color scheme which brings back memories of the time seeing those smokey jet engined pioneers. Inflight has a good taste when it comes to replicating classics. The heavy metal frame gives the model a solid look while the shiny paint job gives it a sleek finish. With the Italian flag on the tail wing and the light blue striped cheat line assures the attention grabbing of your model display cabinet. Do not waste any time since this already 3 year old model is scarcely available in new condition in the market.

This bird rolled out of the Douglas Factory with msn 45910 on January 9th 1967 for Alitalia under this registration and named "Gioacchino Rossini". Alitalia further leased on 1977 to 1979 to LAM Mozambique. Then sold to Sea & Sun Airlines in the US re registered as N39307 in 1988 and further moved on to the hands of MGM Grand Air with N803MG on March 1990. In the mean time it was used by Kitty Hawk Intl. and Exrpess Net Airlines. It got further sold to American Intl, Airlines in April of 1995 for only 4 months who also sold it to Trans Continental Airlines registering it as N181SK on August of 1995. Only three years later it got leased to Kuwait Airways and in 1999 became a part of Air Cargo Chartering's fleet registered as 9G-REM.

Two weeks ago, I received an email from a grand Diecast aircraft retailer, asking for an opinion what would be most wanted among seven different aircraft types. From the Douglas dash 8, 9 and 10, from Boeing the B737 dash one or two, further to the new gen dash seven to nine, the B727 dash one and two and Boeing's first four jet engine masterpiece B707 and finally Lockheed's Tristar L1011. There were 187 airlines mentioned in their wishlists and members from three forums contributed to the vote. www.400scalehangar.net, www.diecastaircraftforum.com and www.wings900.com.

Delta airlines on first place recieving 19 votes, then on with 10 votes Midway Airlines and United sharing the second place and on third place by three airlines, SAS, PanAm and American Airlines. Specifically the Delta Airlines DC-8 was highly preferred, with second place Midway's DC-9 and PanAm's B707.

Along with the votes, we had some very useful hints and pleads by collectors towards manufacturers. Specifically, they are asking from Inflight to correct the cockpit windows of the DC-10. The B707-320 mould is more like the B707-320B/C mould. Correct the PanAm Logo on the B707's and please prefer making polished as opposed to chrome models when they are like American Airlines.
