Embroidered Tote Bags for Nurses!

Speaking as a retired nurse, one who worked for 30 years in the nursing field...(in my case it was Psychiatry), I can tell you I lugged around a lot of stuff in my day! When you work shifts, you need all kinds of things...food, drinks, books for your break or night shift, electronic devices, shoes, and a host of other things depending on your tastes.
I have recently started designing for embroidered products on my store AvisNoelleDesigns>Nurses over on Zazzle, and having a great time, I only wish I'd done it sooner!

Welcoming the troops home!

I am so happy that the troops are coming home, not because I know anyone serving, but because I know how happy the families, and the soldiers themselves must be feeling.
I have watched some of the reunions on t.v. and cried as I'm sure most people did. All the wives, the children, the mothers and fathers who have been missing their loved ones...it's so great to see that war over, let's hope it is the last!
I love this Budweiser commercial, it brings a tear to my eye every time I watch it.

I know there are still soldiers serving around the world, and one day they will come home too...so I was moved last night to make a new "welcome home troops" greeting card, and I wrote a nice poem for the inside that came from my heart. I hope someone out there can relate to it!
I also decided to make a matching invitation to a fabulous welcome home party for the returning military, as I am sure there will be lots to celebrate!

Photo Ornaments a great gift idea!

I have a few shops on Zazzle and have just started to make photo ornaments, and cards. I am pretty new at it, but having fun making them...although I haven't got too many as yet IN my store due to being busy with the usual Christmas rush of buying gifts, mailing off Christmas cards, and all that frenzied stuff we do before the big day!
I will however have lots ready for next year as once I get this Xmas season over with I'll have lots of time on those cold winter months, (now I'm retired!) to snuggle up to my new laptop and create! Can't wait! So I thought I'd show you what I mean.

One day at a time...Addiction and Recovery.

I have a store on Zazzle named Quotation Corner, I absolutely love quotes of all kinds, and wanted to provide a place to show the world my photography, or art combined with an appropriate quote...and so Quotation Corner was born! I have had a great deal of pleasure finding quotes from the profound to the completely hilarious, and try to add a few products every day on all different topics ie. Yoga, Chinese Wisdom, Books, Flowers and as of yesterday...Recovery.
For those not understanding what I mean by "recovery" I mean an individual in the process of recovering from an addiction.
Here is a definition that I found on the internet...

Addiction recovery is the stage when life without drugs and alcohol begins. Addiction recovery is a relatively new concept that has grown as people have come to realize that being clean and sober is just the start of life after addiction.

Put another way, recovery is more than just the absence of problems. True recovery is reflected in personal growth, becoming a better person than you were yesterday. Improved lifestyle and fulfilling relationships are often benefits of aligning with habits that further your personal growth.

Addiction recovery describes the stage where individuals are no longer using drugs or alcohol. Recovery can result from treatment or a decision to quit. While many think that the opposite of an active addiction is being clean and sober, true recovery is much more.

My goal is to uplift people through my "Quotation Corner" store, and I have tried to build this particular store with positive energy from inspiring, thought-provoking, interesting, and sometimes just plain funny quotations, from those great minds that have long since passed from this earth. These intelligent people have left us with wisdom and knowledge that I feel, MUST be passed on.

I have thought about having an addiction/recovery section of this store before, many times...but life was too busy, and I put it off. I now have the time, and there are so many wonderful sayings or "slogans" that helped me during my dark days of the soul, slogans I use still today...even though I no longer attend Al-Anon meetings every week as I used to. Yes I have a link with alcoholism, through my mother. She was an alcoholic and I'm sure not the only one in the family, (now I have been educated about the disease!)

The tell-tale signs were there, but I didn't see them for what they were in those days. I was brought up in England, where there's a pub on every corner, just like there's a gas station or a bank on every corner in North America! Drinking is a big pastime there, and an every day (or several times a day) thing. It's no big deal. The people I grew up with, judged how good their "night out" was on how sick/ill they were the next day! As in..."Oooh that was a right good night that was...ooh my head is splitting!(headache)"...usually followed by rueful laughter. I know individuals that were still drunk the next morning when they were driving to their job and actually vomited in their lap while driving!! Hard to believe right?
It happens, and not just in England.

My mother led me a merry dance with her drinking, all my life. I have unsavoury memories of cleaning up her vomit, and suffering her tirades and verbal abuse. I used to dread coming home from school, as I never knew what I was walking into. If I got a whiff of sherry on her breath, it didn't bode well.

It took me many years until I finally found myself at an afternoon meeting of Al-Anon. Someone had taken me to a meeting 20 years earlier, but it didn't stick. I only wish it had. I am grateful that I went that afternoon and stayed for over 2 yrs, going faithfully every week.
I couldn't/wouldn't speak for the first 6 months...just listened, and cried...and cried...and cried. Listening to stories from others that touched jagged, painful nerves within my soul.
Eventually I spoke. I participated in learning more about alcoholism, and how I had been affected by someone else's drinking. And though I didn't continue forever...I took what I felt I needed at the time, continued reading their literature, got some counselling....and got my "radar" straightened out.

Now I'm happy to say, I am in a loving relationship...after years of dating "my mother" in the ways people affected by alcohol usually do...acting out the whole ugly scenario with different partners. Oh yes, and I went into the helping professions which is typical of "wounded healers"...for me it was Psychiatry, which I credit with helping me out further, in my search for the "why" of my life.

My mother died three years ago this month...we came to a sort of peace at the end. She finally admitted she had a drinking problem, but didn't stop. She finally expressed some remorse about "not giving me enough love", and said "I should have hugged you more".
Well Mom if you're listening...that's true...but admitting you were powerless over alcohol and going to A.A. would've shown you loved me much, much more.

Sick of Obama?

Well if you're not sick of Obama by now...you must be in Hollywood! Those folks in Tinseltown seem to love him!
I am Canadian, but I am sick of seeing him trot up or down stairs with fists clenched in front of him like he thinks he's one of the Rat Pack, a poor man's Sammy Davis Jr. or a Rocky impersonator or ...just plain arrogant! I mean really....get over yourself!

I'm also sick of hearing where he's touring today...it's like he's on a World-Wide Tour not the President of the United States of America! When does he sit at his desk and do any work? I personally think he is travelling because he's inept and he knows that if he's in the White House where he should be, then sooner or later people will catch on that he's a charlatan and doesn't have a clue what he's doing!

So, roll on 2012 when there will be a replacement (hopefully), and the country can breathe a sigh of relief.
That means Canada too, because as they say, when the U.S. catches a cold...Canada reaches for the decongestant!

The Herman Cain Sensation!

Well, I think I was one of the first on Zazzle to start making Herman Cain bumper stickers with his 9-9-9 Tax Reform message. I liked him from the get-go, liked his southern drawl, and liked his straight talking style. He quickly became a sensation and is now top of the polls in the U.S. and of course there are those that are trying to undermine him...referring to the latest accusations of "sexual harassment" being directed at him from ? who knows where, as they are keeping that one big fat secret. Let's face it, if they had anything they'd be naming names.
Anyhow...I like Herman, I think he's got common sense, and business smarts, plus...hey...he's an actual rocket scientist! We need that in the White House right? (even if it's only as Vice-President...still an important role.) He could be accused of being naive, but he's not a politician, and many I think could relate to his innocence of how the system works. It's definitely a learning curve for him.
Hopefully this latest b.s. will fade away, and the world won't buy it...I will continue to make Herman Cain items to promote him, and here are a few of my offerings.

I have sold bumper stickers in many states, so a lot of folks like him all over the country! I also have T-Shirts and travel mugs, buttons and magnets, among other things....please take a look, and vote for Herman Cain 2012...it could make all the difference to the economy and the feeling of pride in the United States of America.

It's Pumpkin Time Again!

Gosh...where does the time go?
I have been retired for nearly 6 months! The days fly by and I'm still not quite used to the lack of schedule...not complaining though!
I have been watching the changes in the weather...now I have the time to pay attention...the slight chill in the air in the morning, the leaves floating down to the ground, the squirrels running about hiding their nuts or whatever it is that they do? I see little piles of...well, not sure what exactly...on my deck railing, and I'm pretty sure it's the left overs of a squirrel's lunch.
Lately I've had visits from two different cats in the neighbourhood, that come and sit on my deck or near my pond watching the birds...ever so casually, as if they are just too lazy to move. But boy can they fly into action when you least expect it...one scared me the other day when I was idly gazing at the garden while talking on the phone and WHAM! Out of nowhere sprang this huge cat onto what I'm guessing was the resident chipmunk...I never found out, because I went out to rescue it and saw nothing. I guess he got away! :)
I've been working on stuff in my Zazzle store, and here's a few Halloween invitations for those spooky costume parties I know you're dying to plan...no pun intended!
Here's a Samhain card too that celebrates the pagan/celtic festival, which coincides with Halloween and is a festival dedicated to the harvest and the dead...plus a few other related items.

Iguana be just like you!

I like Iguana's...there's something about they way they seem so calm and self-confident as they laze around with that one eye that sort of twitches about! I took some photo's and made some cards using them...'cos that's what I like to do...and just sold my first one of these today! I'm pumped that someone out there finds my humour funny! Here it is just to show you, 'cos I'm proud...:) It's actually a card about weight-loss and congratulating someone on looking great! So I think it's my humorous take on how people put themselves down, maybe in subtle ways...when they actually look wonderful, and need to be told!
Now...back to Iguana's!
Here's a few facts about these darling creatures taken from the National Geographic Society Website: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/

Green, or common, iguanas are among the largest lizards in the Americas, averaging around 6.5 feet (2 meters) long and weighing about 11 pounds (5 kilograms).
They are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite being quite difficult to care for properly. In fact, most captive iguanas die within the first year, and many are either turned loose by their owners or given to reptile rescue groups.
The green iguana’s extensive range comprises the rain forests of northern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and southern Brazil. They spend most of their lives in the canopy, descending only infrequently to mate, lay eggs, or change trees.
Primarily herbivores, iguanas are active during the day, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruit. They generally live near water and are excellent swimmers. If threatened, they will leap from a branch, often from great heights, and escape with a splash to the water below. They are also tough enough to land on solid ground from as high as 40 feet (12 meters) and survive.
Iguanas' stout build gives them a clumsy look, but they are fast and agile on land. They have strong jaws with razor-sharp teeth and sharp tails, which make up half their body length and can be used as whips to drive off predators. They can also detach their tails if caught and will grow another without permanent damage.
Other members of the iguana family include the Fiji Island banded iguana, the desert iguana, and the Galápagos Islands marine iguana. Their appearance, behavior, and endangered status vary from species to species.

As this says they are difficult to care for...so rather than kill it off in the first year, if you still want a reptile as a pet why not try the Bearded Dragon? They are pretty cool I must say...and I know because my son has one called Dudley (what else!)...and the whole family love him. He's easy to care for, and though I'll admit I was shocked at my son's choice in pets at first...I've grown quite used to him and his baleful stares! He lays under his heat lamp most of the time, as his calcium-dusted cricket entrees run about in front of him, while he seems to enjoy ignoring them...when he's full that is! I even saw one sitting on his head one day when I was visiting...I thought it was hilarious that his potential dinner was brave enough (or foolish enough) to sit on his head for Gawd's sake! But my son assured me that happens fairly often, and he'd get around to polishing them off when his tummy once again began to rumble...maybe after a nap....:)
I will have to get a picture of that one day for sure. Anyhow, Dudley's pretty cool, and when he's out for exercise, he doesn't seem at all bothered that the cats or the dog sniff him, as the rabbit watches him intently from afar.
Yes it's a proper Dr. Doolittle's waiting room over there! LOL!

Here's some information on them:

Popular as pets, bearded dragons or "beardies" are moderately sized lizards native to Australia. While they are generally considered good pets even for beginner reptile owners, they do have fairly complex nutritional and environmental requirements so need special equipment and a fair amount of time to care for properly. However, they are social and easy to tame and handle, and show a range of fascinating behaviors that make them interesting to watch. Although several other species are becoming available to the pet trade, the most commonly available variety is the central or inland bearded dragon, Pogona vitticeps. This species is native to arid, rocky areas of Australia, and is typically tan/brown in coloration (several color morphs are also available). Their name is derived from the spines that line their throats. These spines usually lie flat but if the dragon feels threatened the throat is expanded causing the spines to stand up, making the dragon look more intimidating (especially combined with their tendency to flatten their bodies to appear wider). However, bearded dragons are generally docile, and their aggressive displays are rarely seen in captivity. They are noted for an endearing greeting behavior, in which they lift their front leg in an almost circular motion, so it looks like they are waving.

Virtually all bearded dragons available in America are captive bred, as Australia has strict laws against exportation of its wildlife. With an adult size of 18-24 inches (reached by about 2 years of age), a good sized tank/cage will be required. The expected life span of a bearded dragon is probably around 10 years when cared for properly, although longer life spans have been reported.

Here's what they look like when they're...um...irritated! No, really don't be scared...they are quite cute when they're in a good mood, and that's most of the time...weren't you reading? :)
So give them a go...and I can vouch for them "waving" I've seen it myself...so sweet...really..it is...I'm not kidding!

God Bless America

Ten years after the terrible, tragic events of 9/11 I cry as I watch the t.v., and listen to the stories of people who were either there in New York on that day, or who have lost people in the attacks...or both.
I have a heavy feeling in my heart, even though I lost no one. But I have lost important people in my life, and on a human level, I know that particular pain and sorrow, and can empathize with the gaping hole it leaves in your very soul.
I also have a strong connection with New York, as the love of my life is from there, and I visit often. New Yorkers are strong, kind, resilient people, and I hate what has happened to them.

This morning I watched the 9/11 programs and saw the sorrow...but also the healing that is taking place on this 10th anniversary. As I hear that long list of names that are being read out while I sit here and type this, I can't help but be moved. Yesterday I was equally moved by the memorial service at Shanksville, where they gave tribute to the heroes of Flight 93.
So touching to hear their relatives recount the phone calls they received from them on that fateful flight, as these brave souls were forced to make the decision that changed everything... the only decision that made any sense, which thankfully thwarted the terrorists twisted plan.

I know those who lost their lives on 9/11 in all the attacks, are not gone or forgotten...but are standing right next to their loved ones, comrades and friends... today especially, and most likely every day.
I believe in life after death, and so I know that these individuals have lost their physical bodies, but their spirits are untouchable, and everlasting. Their DNA lives on in their children, and their deeds while on earth will always be remembered by those that knew and loved them.
They are listening to you, and sending their comfort in any way they can from the realm they are now inhabiting. Pay attention to signs, and dreams and you will receive that comfort, and love.

I marked today by using a photograph I took of the Statue of Liberty at sunset, and creating a wrapped canvas of it with the words "God Bless America"...and truthfully I don't care if I sell even one copy. It's my tribute...and create is what I like to do, now that I'm retired.
The sun is going down in this image, but to me it is symbolic that now the world has reached this 10 year anniversary, the sun has set on it, and now we will continue to heal and the sun will rise on a new day of optimism, and strength, born out of the depths of despair and destruction.
It is what I'm feeling...yes, God Bless America and God Bless all the other nationals from 90 countries that lost their lives in the despicable 9/11 attacks.

Back to school already!

I am always surprised by how fast the summer's fly by, just like my mother used to say "the older you get the faster time flies"...it's so true, and since being retired they go at warp speed!

My grandkids are still enjoying the time away from school, but I'm reminded by all the back-to-school stuff in the stores for sale, that Labor Day and the new school year is very close now. My grandson just returned from a 10 day trip to a Tim Horton's camp, and had a fantastic time apparently..."only the best summer ever!" to quote him! My granddaughter went to a friends summer place while he was gone, (not to be outdone), and my son and daughter-in-law were kid free for a change, and funnily enough actually found out they missed their children quite a bit! Too quiet I guess?

Just before he left I took my grandson to the latest Harry Potter movie...quite good I must say, lots of twists and turns at the end...that's all I'll say in case you're one of the 10 people that hasn't seen it yet! My granddaughter wants to see the new Smurf movie...so that's scheduled for this week. I now take them out separately due to the age difference of 5 years, and it works out much better...no bickering, or competing with each other for my attention! I have been doing some back-to-school items in my Zazzle store, and this is something that I haven't done much of for some reason. Probably because I don't have young children at home, I've gotten out of the "kid" mindset. However, I'm sort of liking it now! Kid stuff is fun!

I'm going to try out some ideas with my new ArtRage software that I downloaded for my new Mac laptop...which I'm loving using btw...and see what I can come up with. Here are a few of the back-to-school items that I have in my store..plus some belonging to the talented people over at Zazzle...what the heck, I'll include some Harry Potter seeing as he's still fresh in my mind.

Retirement...it ain't easy!

This is my first post since all the changes to my Blogger! It's very "clean" and neat...but it's taking me some time to get used to...not sure I like it yet, but we'll see...hmmm...I guess you can't see it from your side, but from mine it's a bit "blah"! Usually I hate things when they first change, but in a little while I get used to it and then can't remember how it was before the change!

I was like that when the old Loblaws supermarket I went to... (Canadian for those of you in other countries), changed to the "Great Canadian Superstore"...but now I quite like it. My first impression of it? It seemed like a warehouse, all big and empty looking, but after they'd finished the place I realized that what I thought was 'big and empty' was actually 'organized and less cluttered'...so maybe I'll feel the same about my blog one of these days soon?

But I digress...on to the reason for my post! I am still trying to get the hang of being "retired", and here I am finally posting something after nearly 2 months. I must say the days just go by in this blissful state! And if I'm not careful, I don't get out of my p.j.'s until noon, and have made no real headway with all my plans to de-clutter, de-weed, and organize my kitchen cupboards! :0)

Now, I should add that I have done a little of all of these things, but my grand ideas before going to sleep of "getting cracking" on a whole day of such tiresome chores the very next morning, is...although well-intentioned, not very realistic for me these days. I start off with a late breakfast because I've stayed up too late watching t.v. or surfing the net, then find myself watching a bit more t.v., and doing a little more surfing or making new products for my Zazzle store...(darn them, why do they insist on adding more and more great products for me to make designs for?) I might then go and do something around the house that makes me feel slightly less guilty...and then it's back to watching the birds take a bath in my backyard pond, or making myself a snack...all this 'watching stuff' makes you very hungry!

Sigh....how do I structure my day? I'm still trying to figure that out. I know I have to spend part of the day working on my house, part of the day working on my stores designing, promoting, and creating products, and part of my day doing fun things...but I'm all over the map. I need to be a bit more disciplined I think in allocating time. Now I have all the time in the world it seems a lot harder? I thought it would be easier? After working hard for 40 years, 30 of those years as a nurse...I should cut myself a little slack maybe?

So...now I'm off to make dinner as thinking about all of this has given me hunger pangs...(my way of procrastinating!LOL!) Then I'm off to the gym as I didn't go yesterday, and then maybe I'll...oooh, um, I don't know...vacuum? I know, I know...I shouldn't complain or make light of it...lots of you are still working hard. God Bless you all! But just know that when the time comes for you to retire, it's not as easy as you think! :) For those of you that are closer, or know someone who is retiring soon...here are a few retirement items from my peers over on Zazzle

The Ghostown in Terlingua, TX

On our latest trip to Texas, A.J. (fiance) and I stopped by Terlingua Texas. It's known for it's Ghostown, and eccentric atmosphere, so of course we had to check it out first hand! It didn't disappoint. We stayed two nights in Terlingua, and I'll never forget them. I have to say when I first laid eyes on the place, I wasn't too impressed and wondered why I'd ever agreed to stay in what looked like a dusty, dry, weird, left-over from the 60s kind of place!

When we first pulled up in front of the General Store, we were initially trying to figure out where we'd be staying. There were the remnants on the hill of the old mining abodes from the time when the miners lived there. Here's a picture to illustrate...
The weather was hot and very, very dry as they were in a drought situation at the time. We were there in April 2011, and they hadn't had rain in that part of West Texas since September 2010! According to the locals, they weren't expecting any either...they figured around July this year would be the first sign of rain.
I stayed in the car while A.J. went into the General Store to find out exactly where we'd be staying. I couldn't help but notice the two fellows that were seated on the porch of the building. One looked like an offbeat Woody Allen in shorts only with long hair, and the other guy had a little dog with him, which wasn't unusual (almost everyone there seemed to have some dog with them that looked in dire need of grooming)....but this guy was sitting directly under a sign that said in bold lettering, "NO DOGS ALLOWED ON THE PORCH!" I desperately wanted to take a picture of them as I found it so amusing, but I figured I could never use it on the web due to privacy issues, and secondly I was too embarrassed to jump out of the car and photograph them. But then...another car pulls up next to me, and in it was a tall rangy looking man, every inch the middle aged cowboy type. He was wearing faded blue jeans, and a cowboy hat of course...with a bright red bandana hanging from the back of his hat to shield from the sun. He called out to the other two..."How y'all doin'?" A phrase I was to hear a lot of in the coming days, and the two men nodded at him as he got up there on the porch and sat between them.

Now this spot seemed to be a natural hang-out for the folks in Terlingua. These men didn't really speak to each other, they just sat...staring out at the desert, and I'm guessing this might have been some daily ritual. Anyway...A.J. soon appeared with a big smile and said, "I couldn't believe it...I went in to ask where our hotel was, and the woman just hands me my reservation!" The "hotel" was nearby...a long stretch of motel-like rooms in the desert. The room itself was clean, and the bed comfortable, it looked like the pictures on the internet...it was the layout that was not quite what I expected.
I liked the room, but I found it dark even when the curtains on the small windows were open. There was an air-conditioner in one window, so that cut down on the light coming in too. Not sure if the fireplace is functional, but it looked pretty....maybe in the winter? There was a sink, I'm assuming for adding water to the coffee-maker, as no mirror for getting washed?

I took two pics of the inside, the more flattering shots...it looks quite nice from these I admit, but when in the room I always felt it was confining and I nicknamed it "the black hole of Calcutta"...but after all, we didn't spend too much time in there, and I don't want to make it sound awful....you just have to go there to really understand I'm afraid! Here's a pic of the room. Lovely bed as you can see. The 'layout' that I referred to was the fact that the bathroom/shower was a few doors down from our room. Not next door mind...a few doors down. It was our private bathroom, and it was very nice actually, tiled floors, modern fittings...but in the middle of the night if you wanted to pee, you had to get a robe on, trying not to fall over anything in the dark getting out of the room (trying not to wake your sleeping partner)...get the key to the bathroom, stroll outside down several doors to the bathroom, unlock the door...do your thing....then reverse the process back to the room.
Now after the first time, you get a little used to it. There was one night that I went out on my nightly 'jaunt' and was transfixed by the millions of stars in the dark Texas sky. Far in the distance I could see a triangular shape brightly lit...it looked like a sail of a yacht, only lit up against the black night. What IS that? I thought. I then went inside our room to get the binoculars, as I though it was peculiar.
Slowly it dawned on me as I stood there fixated on the strange sight, and now could make out a mountain in front of the lighted 'sail' with the aid of the binoculars. What I was seeing was the crescent moon rising up from behind the mountain! Oh how I wish I had a picture of that! I'm not that great with the settings on the camera for night action...but I did try to take pictures, the first few didn't turn out, and I eventually gave up and just looked at the beauty of the sight that I was missing while fiddling with the camera! I actually went in and woke A.J. up, because I wanted to share it with him.
We stared at the night sky for what seemed ages, and it was a great experience....all because I had to pee! So...there was some really great upsides to staying there...and I think I even got used to listening to the coyotes calling in the desert while I was shlepping to the bathroom in my robe and slippers!

Then there's the Starlight Theatre which was another great spot for a meal and some musical entertainment. They have musicians that pass through and are local, and they've also had big names there...one I can think of is Willie Nelson. The food was really good the two nights we ate there. It got it's name from the time the wind blew off the roof during the mining days of the town. They have the Terlingua annual chili cook-off too, which I've heard is quite the event!

I'm starting to fill it up now with images of Texas.
Terlingua has a mining history which I should mention...they mined for "quicksilver", or "mercury" and extracted it from Cinnabar...read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terlingua,_Texas...very interesting!

They also have a cool cemetery which is very old, and the crosses are falling over sideways, but it is still visited judging by the faded flowers and rosaries that I saw there. I was able to photograph it late one evening after dinner...trying to find the perfect time, as the hot sun washed out the details, but with our busy schedule there never seemed to be the perfect time! Hope you can make out the details, increasing the brightness just seemed to lose the "mood" of the shot!

All in all...though I was kinda glad to leave Terlingua as it was so dry and dust covered everything whenever I ventured out, I would like to go back when the drought is over, and try to make it for the Chili cook-off one year.
The place has an eccentric but good-hearted feel about it, and I'm really glad that I saw it for myself.
If you ever want to disappear and live off the grid, this is the place to go!

West Texas...where the sun has outworn its welcome!

It's been a while since my last post...I've been away celebrating the commencement of my retirement, and enjoying not having to be anywhere if I don't want to be! Maybe now I can enjoy the summer, and sitting in my garden...once I catch up on transforming it from the jungle of weeds it's become since I went on 12 hr. shifts about 3 years ago. Aaaah..."retirement"...what a beautiful word!

My fella A.J. and I went to West Texas, a place he's enthralled with, and I have little knowledge of, and a place that is badly in need of rain...they haven't had any since September 2010!
Hard to imagine right? The folks from around there say there probably won't be any until July!

They have had wildfires to contend with, started in part by some idiot that flicked his cigarette butt out the car window, and carried merrily on his way without a thought for the devastation he might cause. The drought was particularly noticeable out in the Big Bend Park, where even the Cactus and Aloe plants looked shriveled up and on their last legs. See here the far right of this cactus photo, where the light shows the lack of hydration in this plant. The Aloe just looks...well, sad! I haven't retouched these photo's and they were taken in full sun, so are a bit washed out, but that's the feeling I want you to get...hot, dry and dusty, just like it was that day. We were there just after lunch, one of the hottest times of the day, and not a good time to be there in retrospect...but that's how it worked out. By the time I was done, I felt exactly how that Aloe looked! LOL!

I almost had heat stroke that afternoon, no kidding, I have never felt so horrible! It was 100+ degrees literally, and even though the climb up the Santa Elena Canyon trail wasn't that bad, for even a neophyte hiker like me...the heat combined with the exertion, nearly did me in! I looked up heat stroke on the net later, and believe me I had all the symptoms! There was hardly any shade, as a lot of the vegetation such as reeds, which I was told had once been there, had died off! I poured water over my head at the urging of a couple also on the trail (thank you again btw!)...and got off that mountain as quick as I could. It seemed an interminable hike back down as I was finding it hard to catch my breath, and felt emotional...probably fear! I had asthma as a child, and that 'not being able to breath thing' really stays with you! People...never ever, go hiking at mid-day...go early in the morning or late in the day when it's cooler...funny we knew that...but somehow ended up doing the exact wrong thing! I had done an easy hike the day before, and it was great...there was a breeze, and it was open to a beautiful view on one side. I'm no expert, but I think the fact that I was confined in this canyon, with huge rock faces on either side added to the reflected and trapped heat. Oh yes, there was a breeze...but it was like a hairdryer blowing on you!

I'm sure it's beautiful in normal years where the weather co-operates with some moisture, in fact since being home I've looked at pictures on the web of the canyon looking positively verdant...I hope to see that another time in person...but this time I'll be watching to make sure they've had rain before I go. I knew there was a drought, but until you've experienced it first hand, you have no idea what you're in for....gosh I'm so naive!

Then there's the Rio Grande which right now doesn't look so grand, dried up in parts, and only about 2 ft. deep in other places. They had to cancel the rides on the rafts and canoes as there was just no point...you'd be "portaging" more than anything! Here's a pic I took of the river while on the 'unforgettable Santa Elena hike'...you can see how dried up it is, and I'm told this is not only due to the drought, but also due to the Mexicans drawing from the river for their own needs.
Anyway...that's enough for now. I've got more pics to share about other legs of this trip...stay tuned!

William and Kate...the big day is nearly here!

I remember the day that Princess Di wed Charles, and watched it...(I think I was at work?) like thousands...nay, millions of others did, lost in the romanticism of it all. Only to find out the truth of their relationship in years to come. Disillusioning to say the least.
This time, with their beloved son and his lovely bride-to-be, we all hope that 'true love' will make all the difference to the outcome. True love on both sides that is!
I have a good feeling about this couple, and I do think the Royals have changed their outlook on relationships since Charles and Diana's marriage ended so badly. Sometimes dark clouds have silver linings, and allowing Royals to marry 'commoners' was one of their better moves.
I will be away on vacation the day of the wedding, but will try and watch it if I can find a t.v., and will set the timer on my PVR just in case.
I have sold a few stickers that I made to commemorate the big day, which made me make a mug and T-Shirt too, with possibly a tote bag in the near future...but I haven't gone hog wild making stuff, as there's so much on the internet for sale. Some of it quite tacky I must say! I have made an effort to make my products with a British feeling of pride, and love of the young couple, and a sincere hope that they will have a long and happy marriage. God Bless!

I wish William and Kate well in their new life together, they make a handsome couple, and I am glad they're coming to Canada for their first official trip as man and wife...that was a nice touch! Good luck to you both from an ex-pat Brit now living life (for many years) in Canada.

When a beloved pet dies...

I have been playing around with my Squidoo lenses and the latest one I've made has to do with pet adoption and Australian Shepherd dogs in particular, as that was my "beloved pet" who passed on a few years ago. I made a card about pet loss/sympathy for my card store, and when I wrote the verse she was foremost in my mind...and I can tell you it came from the heart as the tears were tripping me up while I wrote it!
Recently I was contacted by a lady in the U.K. about this card, asking if I could make one especially for a couple who had lost a dog. I had made one for a female owner (Mom), and a male owner (Dad)...but for some strange reason, I hadn't thought to make one for a couple (Mom and Dad)? So I busied myself in making this lady a special card, and she was very happy with the result.
I'm happy to do custom work for people like this, as I may have inadvertently forgotten a detail such as this when making cards or other products, and I know people want to send something 'just right' that is perfect for the recipient.
Here is the card in question, I drew the dog too which looks nothing like my dog Merlin, but I thought it was cute anyway!
I'm going to do a few more pet sympathy cards in the coming days, now that I'm retired I have time to look through my old photo's of my dog, and other pets...love tripping down memory lane! Retirement! Am I dreaming?

I feel a little like I'm dreaming right now...like I'm about to wake up and find this retirement thing is just a very vivid dream I was having, and now I will be jolted out of it to face reality!

You see I suddenly, out of the blue, received an offer to take an "early retirement option", from my employers. A mental-health hospital in which I've worked as a nurse for the last 30 years.
I say "out of the blue", but there had been murmurings for quite some time before that, but it was more on the terms of what they like to call 'voluntary exit', which loosely translated means they want you to leave so they can save money, and you lose half your pension that you've earned through blood, sweat and tears!
Finally I guess, they found no one was stupid enough to go for that option, and they were going to have to bite the bullet and offer another version of that, whereby you could get your pension and with enough years in, and your age as a factor...you could at long last limp off into the sunset dragging your arthritic knees, and sorry assortment of work-related injuries with you!
So that's what I did.

This is my first full day of retirement, and after my retirement tea on Monday which I'll share with a good friend who is also retiring, I will be FREE, FREE, FREEEEEE! to pursue my dreams!
It feels surreal, I found myself the last night shift I worked saying "this is the last time I'm going to unlock this door", or "this is the last time I'm going to give out medication here", etc. It just felt weird. People asked if I was 'getting excited', but I could truthfully answer 'no, not yet' as it really didn't feel real. I haven't had much time to process what's happening, and so it feels right now like I'm just on my days off, and I figure by next week it'll feel like I'm on vacation, and then a couple of weeks after that...? Maybe it'll hit me 3 months down the road! Who knows. I'll have to keep you posted.
Before you ask...yes I have lots of hobbies to keep me busy! Structure I hear is very important, and so I will have to replace work hours, with other things...and believe me with my on-line POD stores (print on demand-you will find links to them on this page), and my love of photography, art, and design...plus my fiance, my grandkids, and my garden...I have LOTS to keep my time consumed...but now in a good way!

For or against Valentine's Day?

Yes...I can remember when I had no... (watch my two fingers tweak the air here)..."special person" in my life, and had to sit and listen to my insufferable co-workers go on about the lovely gifts and cards they'd received for Valentine's Day from their "special guy", or even worse...their children! Yes they even had children remember them on Valentine's Day! Imagine that!
I know I wasn't a bad mom, I was actually a pretty great mom considering I had zero support. However, I would never be able to hang my hat with any certainty, on the idea that I would receive a card or flowers...well, anything for that matter from my kid. I just resigned myself to not expecting anything, and then should anything arrive...I'd be pleasantly surprised!
So I can definitely relate to anyone who is an Anti-Valentine supporter. It's a bit like Christmas...it's great if you have a congenial family to enjoy it with...but if not, then it sucks! Great for some, but not for others.
Now I have turned a corner in the Love Department, and I have a great guy who sent me roses today, and who showers me with all the good things in life...I'll admit...I deserve it! I can finally get into the whole 'hearts and flowers' thing. So I guess you could say, I've walked on both sides of the street.

I made a few Anti-Valentine items in my store, and sold the shirt you see below the other day...thank you to whomever! The biggest seller is still cards though...I love a good, old-fashioned soppy, sentimental verse! The Iguana Valentine came to me in a moment of inspiration!LOL! Year of the Floppy-Eared Bunny!

Yes I know that's not it's official title...but I created this little floppy-eared bunny as my ambassador for Chinese New Year, in the lucky Rabbit Year! He is adorable don't you think? So cute and innocent, just sitting there in the grass, as a caterpillar inches its way by, and a blue butterfly circles lazily overhead.
I made the postage stamp below to commemorate this auspicious year, plus a few other things...I'm hoping that the Year of the Rabbit will be fortunate for me, and also my son who's a Rabbit. I'm told wearing red enhances the power, not sure if that is just for Rabbit people, or for all of us? If anyone knows, please leave a comment!

Gung Hey Fat Choy! Hello everyone! I just had to remind you all that Chinese New Year is February 3rd...literally just around the corner, and this year it is the Year of the Rabbit! All the signs have elements attached to them, and this Rabbit year has the element of metal.
Metal gives Rabbits more strength, resilience and determination. Metal Rabbits are more intense in their actions, whether they’re work-related or romantic.
They also have colors...this one is white. Rabbit is the fourth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. It is the sign for people born in 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, and 1999....and now 2011.
Rabbits are elegant, cautious, emotional people. I know because my son is a Rabbit! This year 2011 is supposed to be much calmer and more peaceful than last year, which was a Tiger Year....thank goodness!

I have made some Year of the Rabbit cards and invitations, (plus some other items) with my own painting of a floppy-eared bunny and the Chinese symbol for this auspicious year. I'm sure there will be many parties featuring Chinese New Year celebrations coming up soon, and I will be making more cards myself, plus featuring others from my peers at Zazzle in the next couple of days...stay tuned!

A New Year-A new Valentine!

I have just returned from a trip, so a very Happy New Year to all of you! I spent mine in an Inn with a river view, and my lover A.J. by my side. Hope you had a wonderful New Year's Eve, and that 2011 is a healthy and prosperous one for all of us.
I need to get busy and make some more Valentine's cards, here is one I made a short while ago...I'll try to get on with some more tomorrow. My work gets in the way of creativity, and takes up too much of my time, but it's a necessary evil I'm afraid!
Valentine's Day is next month...already the year is beginning to creep by, the next thing you know it'll be St. Patrick's Day!

This one's for you Dad!

As recently mentioned in a prior post, my father died on December 30th, 1963. He wasn't with me long, and the memories I do have I've hung onto over the years, they're embedded in my mind's eye forevermore.
For instance, I can recall him sitting in his favourite wing-back chair reading the newspaper, while I put pink curlers in his hair. I can remember him making my dolls pram (buggy for you North Americans) into a "twin" pram so that I could have a doll at each end!
I was so pleased with the cardboard hood he'd made and painted black to match the other end...that is until a playmate had made fun of it and laughed at the home-made attempt. I cried, and felt humiliated as I saw it suddenly through her eyes, and knew we didn't have the money to afford a real 'twin' toy pram. I then felt even worse when I saw my Dad's face and the look of disappointment on it, because he'd tried his best.
I remember him running behind while holding me on my bike, as I advanced from training wheels to a two wheeler, and then looking back to see he was way back there and had stopped holding me, wherein I promptly fell off with a crash!
I can still remember him showing me how to polish shoes, mend the soles of shoes, and even knit! He'd learned these things in the army...not sure about the knitting!
I was there with him when he nearly lopped off his thumb, as he was sawing wood trying to build me a desk. The blood was everywhere, and I could see the white bone shining through the grizzly mess. He told me to run and get a tea-towel, which he quickly used to bind up his hand, to try to stem the flow of blood. I helped him as best I could, and I remember my mother walking in, seeing the blood and promptly passing out! The two of us stepped over her and ran all the way to the hospital, no car or phone in those days...and he got the thumb stitched back on, and a tetanus shot! That was when I was sure I wanted to be a nurse...I must have been 7 or 8.

He was dead by the time I was 9. I remember that day clearly too...traumatic, and vivid to this day...it was only two weeks since my granddad died, and we were in mourning still.
Cruel...life can be very cruel.
That was the beginning of a lot of sad years for me, (especially Christmas and New Year)...and I'm crying now as I type this, but I've really emerged a strong and resilient person, who for the past 30 years, has been a dedicated nurse. I also have a good son, and two lovely grandchildren, and a fiance that loves me.
But, every year on December 30th, (and the 17th too for my Grandfather) I think of them, and wish them well wherever they are. I wish I could've known my Dad for a few more years, had more pictures of him, had him meet his grandchild, and great-grandchildren...but it wasn't meant to be.
Still, his genes live on in me, and I have passed them on to my son, and he to his children...and that's life. The dead never truly die do they?
So Dad, I love you, and I still miss you. I am crying not only because I lost you, but because I lost all of those years with you.
I believe you can see me, and know of these words I've written...so thanks for being there and leaving me with happy memories, no matter how few...they are important ones.
