So why are we hearing these warnings about fragrances that are part of so many different products that we can find in our local super markets? If it is in the store it is supposed to be safe, you may ask. It's like "if the doctor is prescribing this drug, it must be safe."

In fact there is nothing wrong with any scent that is derived from a NATURAL source. This article is NOT against all scents.

Fragrances are used since eons on this planet. Even the Egyptians used them. And on TV we see that they have remarkable benefits: They remove bad odors. They make us feel sexy! They keep us fresh the whole day, and cozy, and comfy, and... so on. The list of supposedly benefits is long.
But let's get back to the warnings. We took a glance behind the scenes.



WHAT ARE SYNTHETIC PERFUMES OR FRAGRANCES?

Synthetic fragrances/perfumes are high performance scents and 95% are made out of synthetic - NOT natural - materials that are chemically created mostly from petroleum (crude oil). In many cases a natural substance is taken, and its chemical structure is modified so the scent can be matched somewhat.

Natural Fragrance are Categorized in these Groups:
- Florals, 
- Botanicals or Musks.
These scents fade due to lack on fixatives.

Synthetic scents can be categorized into an INFINITE number of variations. They also last much longer.

Common Ingredients Found in Synthetic Fragrances/Perfumes 

Acetone, ethanol, benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, limonene, methylene chloride, camphor, ethyl acetate, linalool and benzyl alcohol. 
Phthalates and synthetic musks are also commonly used and are potentially hazardous ingredients.

In 2014! a committee convened by the National Academy of Sciences confirmed a federal interagency group’s conclusion that STYRENE, a chemical building block used to produce a wide variety of everyday products, can cause CANCER!

In 2019 these toxic ingredients are still on the market, and are used on a daily basis, and are not removed from the list OR must be labeled at all!

Another VERY BAD PART of these chemicals is that some are known or suspected to be endocrine disruptors.
These substances  mess up the hormonal health which can cause infertility, they can trigger weight gain and even set you up for diseases that are just starting to be on the rise.

In 2016  a study was published by veteran fragrance chemical researcher Anne Steinemann, PhD, and the result was surprising and shocking the same time:

"More than 50% of the population would indeed prefer fragrance-free public spaces such as workplaces, health care facilities and other professional spaces, including, hotels and airplanes."

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found an average of 14 chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products. The BAD PART is none of these chemicals were in fact listed on the label. 

Let's take a popular and simple scent. The Lavender scent that is derived comes from the lavender plant, and has a specific scent. But the chemical version of it can be something completely different, even it is called Lavender scent. It is created in a laboratory of the fragrance industry and they have a stock of 3100 chemical ingredients to choose from. This synthetic blend that shows up on your product label is kept under the name "Parfum or fragrance". That's it. You won't know what chemicals are used to make it.

An Ancient Ayurveda Treatment

In Sanskrit the word for dental health ‘dantaswasthya’ and following Ayurveda, the main point is that the nature of a cure depends upon the constitution of the person and the climatic changes.

The oil pulling  method of today started in the 90s by Mr. Tummala Kotesware Rao of Bangalore, India.  He discovered oil pulling after reading an Ukrainian academic paper which claimed that shamans through Siberia had used oil pulling for more than 100 years.

It was also in the late 90s when the Western wellness trend began. People were searching more and more for alternative methods to keep the body healthy. While sesame oil was widely used for oil pulling hence the connection to Ayurveda, a new miracle oil made its way into the West: Coconut Oil.

Brushing the Teeth before or after Oil Pulling?

There is no need to brush the teeth before using the oil pulling method. But if you do oil pulling after you had a meal, we recommend to brush the teeth.

HOW IS COCONUT OIL EXTRACTED?

The main difference lies in the extraction method:

• Using Heat: Heat is applied to the source material, which separates the oil over time.

• Using Chemicals: The nuts or fruits are ground or rolled up, and then washed with a chemical solution which allows that the oil will be released.  Heat is used as well because the oil will be heated so it separates from the chemical solution.

• Using Pressure: The oil will be pressed with a mechanical press out of the source material. This method is considered to be purer and contains no contamination like the other methods.

After the oil is extracted, another process takes part in order to eliminate any impurities that may have occurred during extraction.
Basically there are TWO main processes but mass produced oil will go through more processes.

• Unrefined: The oil goes through filter process to remove large particles and there is no other refining followed.
• Refined: The oil is exposed to more chemicals, heat, or other materials so to remove any impurities.

In general if we talk about a "Refined Oil" that does not mean it is always treated with chemicals. It can be treated with only heat or special clay to filter and purify it.

WHAT IS FRACTIONATED OIL?

It has 3 names - let's clarify this once and forever:

• Fractionated coconut oil for skincare

• MCT Oil (Medium-chain triglycerides; used in special dietary supplements)

FATTY ACIDS - WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

There are three basic types of fatty acids

• short-chain,

This change alone is responsible that the oil stays liquid even below 76 degrees.

"Lauric Acid" that is a main ingredient in Extra Virgin Coconut oil is part of these long-chain fatty acids and is mostly removed in fractionated oil.

Each of these face masks if made up of natural, blemish-fighting ingredients, providing you with a safe and effective way to get rid of blackheads and other pesky blemishes you may have. What are Blackheads? What are Whiteheads?

Both blackheads and whiteheads are clogged pores but differ in regard to whether the surface of the pore is open or closed.
BLACKHEADS
have an open pore at the surface. It appears black due to dead skin cells, bacteria and oil in the pore coming into contact with the air.
WHITEHEADS
have a closed pore at the surface and appears white because it does not yet contact with the air.

Face Mask #1: Avocado, Honey & Olive Oil Mask

BENEFITS

We all know that avocados are delish. For the same reasons they are so healthy and good for us to eat, they are excellent for the skin as well. Avocados are rich in vitamins E and K as well as omega-3 fatty acids, so they are very moisturizing and softening to the skin without clogging pores. Vitamin E specifically helps fight bacteria responsible for infections and inflammations of the skin. Vitamins A and C in avocados contribute to the free radical fighting property of the fruit. Bonus: these vitamins all work to repair damage and scarring to the skin.

Raw honey is a magical food for so many reasons. In this face mask, it happens to be our secret ingredient for tackling blackheads. Honey is anti-bacterial, making it excellent for fighting any and all breakouts. Honey also has anti-oxidants, known for slowing down the aging of the skin, and is moisturizing like the avocado.

Aside from its moisturizing properties, olive oil is rich in antioxidants, including Vitamin E. It also contains hydroxytyrosol, which aids in preventing free radical damage. Olive oil penetrates deeply into the skin without clogging pores. 

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 of a ripe Avocado
• 1 teaspoon of Olive Oil
• 1 tablespoon of Raw Honey

This amount will make enough for 4-5 masks and can last in the fridge for about 3 days. Measurements can, of course, be cut down should you wish to make less.

• First, scoop out half of the avocado with a spoon, and put it in a little dish. Mash it up a bit with a spoon. (Note: It's not important to make it as soon as smooth as possible, just try to get it to a consistency so it can mix easier with they honey and olive oil.

• Next, pour in the honey and olive oil.

• Mash it all up with a spoon again.

• Next is the fun part: Applying the mask.
  Use your fingers to apply it; try to evenly distribute it as best as you can. In the photo you can see that there are some little chunks left. This wont make a difference at all. The ingredients all get on your skin at the end.

Here's how it looks

Leave this mask on for about 15 minutes. The honey and olive oil make it feel a little slimy, but will do the moisturizing part for sure.

Wash off easily with warm water and face cloth. We recommend using a face cloth, as the honey can stick a bit and can be a little more difficult to get off.

This mask leaves your skin feeling super moisturized and clean. Nothing like the dry, stripped feeling of washing off a store bought a mask!

Face Mask #2: Coconut Oil, Oatmeal & Honey Mask

BENEFITS

Coconut Oil has numerous benefits for the skin, specifically for treating breakouts and acne. Coconut oil is famous for its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties - the perfect recipe for fighting blemishes on the face. The Vitamin E. in the oil ensures the proper functioning of the sebum glands and clears pore blockages. Coconut oil is also anti-inflammatory, should you have any existing irritations of breakouts on your skin. 

Oats have been used dating back to the ancient Egyptians for their beautifying benefits. Oatmeal absorbs excess oil on the skin, preventing the clogging of pores. It also helps wash away impurities on the face that lead to blackheads and breakouts. Like coconut oil, it contains antimicrobial agents and antioxidants. Oatmeal also acts as an exfoliant, brushing away dead surface skin cells, a great way to rid yourself of blackheads.

INGREDIENTS

• 1/4 cup of traditional Oats
• 1 teaspoon of Coconut Oil
• 1 teaspoon of Honey

• First, measure out 1/4 cup of oats to put into a blender because the oats need to be ground to a powder for this mask. I use 1/4 cup to ensure that I have enough for the blender to grind, but later we will only use 1 tablespoon of the powder for the mask itself.
• I have a great, powerful blender (Vitamix) so I just turn it on a medium speed for about 5 seconds until it turns into a powder. (Note: You don't want the powder too fine, or you won't get as much of the exfoliating power out of your mask.

• Next, put 1 tablespoon of the powder into a little dish to be mixed with the honey. We recommend to use the Aviva Pure Coconut Oil because it is much lighter on the skin than any other cold pressed coconut oils found on the market today.

• Mix it all with a spoon until it reaches a paste consistency.

• Applying this mask can get a little tricky because the paste doesn't always go on smoothly. First take full advantage of the exfoliating aspect of the oats and just scoop it out with the fingers and massage all around your face in little circles. Focus on the areas of your face with blackheads when you massage into skin, as it will really help to exfoliate the skin in these areas.

This mask feels sticky and oily, but you can feel your skin soaking up all the goodness! Leave this mask on for about 15 minutes, and then wash it off with warm water and a face cloth. The exfoliation combined with the moisturizing of the coconut oil and honey leaves your skin baby soft, and you know the ingredients did their job on your blemishes!

Face Mask #3: Lemon Juice & Baking Soda Mask

BENEFITS

Lemon works like a natural astringent, reducing the oil on the face and helping to dry out acne and breakouts. It also functions as an antiseptic on the skin, killing bacteria that causes blemishes. The citric acid in lemon also works as an a natural exfoliant.

Baking Soda works to neutralize pH imbalances on the skin, a common cause of acne. Like lemon juice, it also helps to dry the skin by removing excess oil, and shares it's antiseptic properties. The combination of baking soda and lemon juice masks a gritty paste, acting as an exfoliant in addition to a face mask!

INGREDIENTS

• 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon of baking soda

• Measure out 1 teaspoon of each of the two ingredients, and combine them in the little dish.

• A little reaction occurs when the two are mixed that looks like the picture below. After a couple seconds, it will settle.

• You can apply this mask using just your fingers. Just be sure to massage it into little circles on the areas with blackheads to take advantage of the exfoliation!

This mask doesn't look like much on, and you can soon start to feel it harden a bit on the skin. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Of all 3 masks, this one will definitely leave your skin feeling the softest.
The fineness of the granules of baking soda really makes you feel how deeply it cleanses the pores of all impurities.

Can I have oily and dehydrated skin at the same time?
Yes, in fact, your oily skin could be because it’s overproducing oil to compensate for the lack of moisture in your skin. Regardless of the surface, the skin underneath is not hydrated.

What about Yeast, Bacteria and Molds?
You must know that Bacteria, yeasts, and molds do not grow in an ethanol concentration of approximately 15-20% or greater.

Alcohol - Drying the Skin. True or Not?

If you place alcohol in a 100% concentration onto the skin, it will dry the skin and it is also harmful. If you do this repeatedly over some time your skin will suffer from it.
Back to the question if it is true or not: You must keep in mind that there is a huge difference when alcohol is applied directly to the skin or the alcohol is in a product that consists mainly of moisturizing oils, butters, glycerin and juices in which alcohol is only one component.

For example: Imagine having two shots of Vodka on an empty stomach. How would you feel? Now imagine to take  hose two shots of Vodka diluted into two pint glasses of orange juice and drunk on a full stomach.
It is a different experience. Like splashing raw alcohol on the face versus applying a luxurious moisturizing cream preserved with alcohol extracts to it.

The effects are different. Health care workers reported about the drying effects of alcohol because the hand cleaning substances they use are containing far too much alcohol to make sure that a thorough sanitation will happen. A alcohol based hand rub solution applied several times on the skin for weeks, months and years will effect the skin badly for sure.

The complaints were about unacceptable skin irritation caused by alcohol-based hand rubs. In spite of the complaint, when the irritant effect of alcohol on the skin has been evaluated, most authors found low toxicity (Boyce et al., 2000; de Haan et al., 1996; Lübbe et al., 2001; Winnefeld et al., 2000).

So the skin irritation of healthcare workers is not simply caused by alcohol antisepsis. It is  a combined damage resulting from the usage of alcohol detergents that remove important lipids from the skin layer, the stratum corneum. And the skin becoming over-hydrated from wearing gloves. To reduce the adverse effects of alcohol-based hand rubs, it is shown that adding emollients or humectants is efficacious (Many studies are reviewed in Boyce & Pittet, 2002).

There is no doubt, Skin care products must be preserved because microbial growth in beauty products needs to be prevented. Contamination needs to be avoided.
You might want to purchase products that are completely without preservatives but you cannot keep them longer than a couple of weeks.
There are countless reports of lotions and creams that are causing contact dermatitis, rashes, and worse because they are not preserved.

Why Cinnamon Plumps the Lips Naturally

DIY Cinnamon Lip Plumping Methods

1. Use 1 cinnamon stick and dip it into some liquid coconut oil. The cinnamon stick should just be moistened a little. Apply the stick gently to the lips. It will feel as if the lips are burning but the oil is soothing this sensation.

2. Use an empty spice jar (rinsed and dried very well) and fill it with some coconut oil (or similiar oil) and cinnamon sticks. Close tight.
Let sit for at least 1 week. Use the oil on your lips. If the stinging effect is gone, replace the stick.

3. Use a very clean and dry dark colored bottle and mix 4 tbsp of coconut oil with 4 to 6 drops of food grade, organic cinnamon oil. Optional: Add some drops of Vitamin E oil which is  a natural preservative (will increase the shelf life).
Massage this oil mix slightly on your lips for a fuller look. Using cinnamon oil is causing an increased burning sensation.

4. Mix 1 tbsp of very soft cocoa butter with 1 tsp coconut oil and some drops of food grade cinnamon oil in a small glass container. If cocoa butter is not soft melt it in the micro wave or use double-boiler method. Use the cinnamon oil sparingly; keep in mind that too much will burn the lips!

5. Make your own lip scrub. It will exfoliate and plump your lips at the same time.

Combine 1 tbsp of coconut oil, 1 tsp ground cinnamon and 1 tbsp white sugar in a small bowl. Mix well. Gently massage onto lips for 5 to 10 min. This will help stimulate blood flow and make your lips appear fuller.

Coarse - Dry Hair:  It may be that there is no lack of protein and this leads to more brittle hair and even hair loss. Such hair needs Argan oil.

If you are allergic to coconut of course we would never recommend to use coconut oil. It does not matter how good the quality is!

Always Use the Right Amount

Coconut oil works well in small amounts. There should be just a light coat on the hair which, in many cases, tames the frizz and adds shine to the hair without overwhelming it.

USAGE
Rub a small amount of coconut oil in your hands. If it is firm, allow some time so it is melting. If it is liquid (as our oil) there is no reason to wait. Work the oil through your hair gently. Leave it in for a short time first, if necessary raise the time or leave over night. Then shampoo hair thoroughly.

Coconut oil is great to be combine with other oils. When combined with other oils and ingredients the effect of coconut oil itself will be different.

If it is combined with Argan oil - like in our hair mask - or olive oil, it wont dry out the hair or make it brittle.
Another beneficial ingredient is honey as the sugar of honey will nourish hair and tame the frizz.

Best Practices for Coconut Oil

• Oil should not touch the scalp
  If you suffer from dandruff coconut oil might be good to use but not directly on the scalp. Use the oil on a small scalp section first to see if you have any negative reactions such as irritated skin. We recommend to use it directly on the hair. 
• Begin with small amounts
  Be careful. See how your hair reacts on coconut oil. You always can increase the amount.  More is not always better. 
• Combine with other ingredients
  For example Coconut oil together with avocado oil is a deep conditioning treatment for the hair. You also can mix in some honey.

The Natural Teeth Whitening Method
Forget about the chemical tooth whitening strips or any other methods that supposedly will whiten the teeth. Using coconut oil is so easy:

1. Take 1 teaspoon of the oil or one Cocopull packet.
2. Place the oil in your mouth. If you use thick oil, wait until it is liquid. Cocopull oil is already liquid and has a refreshing peppermint flavor.
3. Start swishing the oil in your mouth, starting with 5-10 minutes, then increase up to 20 minutes. Swish it around in the whole mouth so gums and teeth will be touched.
4. Spit oil into trash.
5. Rinse mouth with warm water and brush teeth as regular.
Don't gargle or swallow the oil!



Fights Bacteria that Cause Tooth Decay
Of all suggested oils, Coconut oil is the preferred oil as it contains lauric acid which is in 50% of the fat. Bacteria don't like lauric acid because it has an anti-microbial effect. Especially it inhibits Strep mutans, the bacteria that is causing tooth decay. How many bacteria, do you think are on our mouth?
In a clean mouth are between 1,000 and 100,000 bacteria on each tooth. This makes millions of bacteria all in all.
So this is a great effect that coconut oil has. It should not be surprising that more and more people love all the benefits and are looking for a convenient coconut oil that they can use.

Detoxification Effect
The germs in the body can cause inflammation which can lead to diseases. The entry point of the body for such contamination is our mouth.
