AW@L Radio - Smash The State Report: Jan. 25, 2013

support the hunger strike at Penetang prison then listen to news about Honduran mining laws, Mapuche resistance, resource extraction plans in NA, pissed off scientists + more!

listen here: http://www.rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-25-smash.mp3

From the January 18th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - The show starts with the last few verses of Chumbawumba's Digger's Song then goes to an interview with David Cedeño is a 29-year-old father who has been at the "Penetang prison" for 18 months. David suffers from sleep apnea and has requested treatment for this medical reality. While the did buy David a sleep apnea machine, they still refuse to treat him with respect, the staff at the Central North Correctional Centre (CNCC) have been holding David in segregation since September 2012. The piece was published as its own podcast here, but was included on AW@L Radio to maximize its exposure. On facebook, a page has been set up for David.

Following, we have a piece from mining watch which has sent the word that a dangerous new mining law is passed by the devious post-coup government in Honduras, with the support of CIDA. The new law, made with support from canadian mining companies destroys the ability of communities to have input over land use decision until deals are already signed, and the government is confined by Free Trade Agreement clauses (think chapter 11 of NAFTA).

Farther south, and in follow up to past notes about Mapuche country, the WCCC reports that the chilean state has biseaged Mapuchean lands and have burned down a community school in retaliation in the death of an estate owner. Mapuchean people will now set up territorial control with roadblocks of all strange vehicles. Also reported is the guilty verdict in the colonial courts in the case of a community Werken (spokesperson).

Coming back up north we mention a few articles and interviews that provide good coverage and analysis of resource extraction in north america. We start with Aaron Lakoff's piece entitled Plan Nord Be Damned! looking into successive quebec government plans for mega-development on Indigenous lands in the north of the province. We then move to 4 pieces on pipelines with 3 on Line 9 in particular. The first is an Alternatives Journal blog by Paisley Cozzarin of Stop the Tar Sands KW called Blocking the arteries of the tar sands. Second is a call for action on January 26th in the northeast of north america against Line 9, with actions in portland maine, toronto, montreal, and waterloo among others. Third is a piece from rabble.ca called Ethical Enbridge? The Truth about Line 9 and the tar sands Gigaproject.

We close the pipeline chat with an announcement from the Sierra club that they will end their moratorium on civil disobedience to participate in anti-pipeline actions later in february. And with that we cut to the Coup with The Land of 7 Billion Dances.

And a piece from earth first news from pissed off scientists: the earth is fucked, begin resistance now! which looks into an american geophysicists union conference and a a few presentations which included the warming idea that "we can have a managed path to lower emissions, or we can do it by misery". We here at AW@L Radio hope that the scientists will put either their bodies or their cheque books up for the revolution!

We then mention the new undertaking to build a broadbased movement to honour treaty agreements and defend the land from industrial colonialism - the Port Elgin Proposal. The piece is read on the Daily GRRR! earlier in the week. A part of that coalitions work will be focused no doubt on the dangers posed by nuclear radiation and developments. Thankfully, folks in toronto have been gearing up and on Feb 3 are planning to shut down the hitachi GE uranium processing plant in Landsdowne and will have the support from the committee for future generations out in northern sasketchewan as they do so!

We then read a piece from Heather Menzies on rabble.ca calling Idle No More is an historic opportunity for alliance building and perhaps a model for the broadbased coalition mentioned above. The piece goes into the need to revive the language of the earth and come together through an understanding of all of our deep histories' rooted in the land and the ongoing grassroots resistance to preserve those roots. Again, this piece calls for settlers to educate themselves on treaty responsibilities and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, while calling for unions, the Council of Canadians, environmentalists, and faith groups to join together and decolonise.

Staying with Idle No More we mention a piece by Tobold Rollo called Great White Father knows best, a piece on white privilege and oblivious old white men.

Next up, dan goes off on the awful decision by the ontario municipal board (OMB) to overrule the region of waterloo's efforts to stop urban sprawl and protect surrounding forests, moraines, and farmland from suburban development. The OMB decided that the regions 83 ha allotment was insufficient for future developments and sided with developers who push the isea that 1000+ ha are needed to grow. Dan once again calls for a BC style land registry, the redevelopment of brownfield sites within the community in a non-gentrifying manner (such as the old dominion electric factory on Duke St in kitchener which is one of the top 10 polluted sites in canada). Dan also questioned whether the Haudenosaunee Development Institute was consulted on this decision as waterloo region is on the haldimand tract, the land of the Haudenosaunee of the Grand River.

We then jump the atlantic for two pieces from egypt where the black bloc has come out in force as anarchists proclaim their space in the egyptian revolution. Calling fro "Life, Freedom, and Social Justice" actions ranged from firebombing offices of repressive state actors, swarming the Suez Canal and shutting down the worlds most important canal, to fighting the police, and more! The Green Eagle Ultras were calling for a just verdict in the soccer stadium massacre from last year as they took the Suez canal with fireworks as other groups took the stock market in Cario and shut down the subway system.

Closing out we call for folks to sign the petition to block Sun TV from getting tax dollar funding for their racist drivel, then tell people to listen to an awesome interview with Dylan Powell of Marineland Animal Defence from animal voices in toronto, as well as check out the #2Row march in st Catherines on feb 2 and the uranium plant shutdown on the 3rd.

end with the magic clap by the coup!

The Smash the State the Report is a segment on the weekly 2 hour AW@L radio (16:00-18:00est) on CKMS 100.3FM CKMS * Community * Co-op * Campus * Radio - Waterloo - http://soundfm.ca

Thankfully, folks in toronto have been gearing up and on Feb 3 are planning to shut down the hitachi GE uranium processing plant in Landsdowne and will have the support from the committ</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>g20,anarchism,anarchy,resistance,news,politics,ecology,environment,solidarity,indigenous,canada,ontario,students,anti,capitalism,anti,poverty,socialism</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-25-smash.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

AW@L Radio - Smash The State Report: Jan. 18, 2013

We cover "religious freedom," captivity of all sorts, solidarity for teachers and INM updates! Plus blocking pipelines and Grassy Narrows!

listen here: http://www.rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-18-smash.mp3

From the January 18th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - The new office of religious freedom, that harper's government has created based on the american model is ready to start. As a piece from rabble.ca explains, this office may be a bit Orweillan - muslims were not invited to a visioning session for the office, and others who presented at the meeting called christians the most persecuted people in the world.

In a second piece of Now Fear This - the national post headlined a piece on the radicalisation of muslims outside of the mosques... they failed to report on the obvious that everyone everywhere is being radicalised by bullshit policies which hurt all but the rich, and that canadian agents are pretty racist.

Next up is a demand from rabble.ca blogger and labour activist David Climenhaga for sun news commentator and general super-douche ezra levant to apologise or explain his hateful and racist commentary on the Roma community, which SunTV has tried to hide as they apply for funding from the canadian public. Climenhaga notes that unless levant and sun news respond, it will be impossible to deny certain things about levant and the so-called news organsisation (that they spew colonial and racist propaganda which works to divide possible allies who would otherwise come together in common causes).

Next up is the exciting final drive to get the Secret Trial 5 documentary funded by the hot docs - doc ignite project. This doc is in post-production and looking for some cash to finish off an important piece of media looking into canada's imprisonment and abusive treatment of 5 muslim men detained through the ultra-shady security certificates program.

We then go to an update from embedded AW@L Radio host Alex Hundert, who has been put back into the hole in the central north correctional centre in penetang ontario. Alex, an anti-colonial anti-capitalist has now been considered a security threat by the head of security and is reporting that he expects to spend the remaining time on his sentence in 24hour a day isolation, except an every other day shower, up to 20 minutes daily in the concrete yard, and spotty access to a muffled phone.

And a reason to question another myth of canada - that we are green... in a recent study, only the US and australia produced more garbage and scored lower on a bevy of indicators designed to understand a countries efforts at "being green". The clear connection here is that all 3 of the bottom countries are colonial powers who clearly have no respect for indigenous rights, or the inherently connected earth on which we all live.

Another thing who has no respect for the rights of others is john holer, the owner of marineland near Niagara Falls. The ongoing and longterm abuse and mistreatment of imprisoned animals in the so-called amusement park has been highlighted by Marineland Animal Defense and in recent exposé by the toronto star. Niagra Falls mayor - Jim Diodati has been having a PR nightmare as he tries to protect the corporate image of his city so tourists will still give it a reason to exist.

With sad news we mark the apparent suicide of internet freedom fighter Aaron Schwartz who was being persecuted by the us government for his mad h4xor skills and for trying to build a better interweb for us all. We call out to all academics to stop publishing papers in journals which do not give free access to those articles to everyone. Knowledge is public domain!

Continuing on with the Smash the State Report we go to a piece from the Grand River Media Collective - an interview from an action in Hamilton ontario where community members held an info and support picket at a highschool in support of the struggle of the teachers against the anti-labour rights attacks of the mcGunity (and harper) government. The action was organised by Common Cause and will be mirrored in other cities, though it was so easy, folks are encouraged to do it within their own communities.

The Idle no More update starts with a reading of a piece from Warrior Publications which reminds us that peaceful protests have profited from a history of militant resistance, then mention another one from the same author, which was highlighted on the Daily GRRR!, which exposed the tactics of the black bloc at a recent anti-pipeline march in vancouver as focusing on helping to create the space necessary for an effective demonstration to take place. They did this by being a magnet for police attention and numbers, and by later creating a physical barrier between police and the rest of the protest while at the same time getting the cops up against the wall (literally...).

In the 3rd story of the segment we note the OPPs recognition that violent repression of well organised (or at least well supported) social movements, such as Idle No More, is not always the best way to do things - admitting that Killing Dudley George or raiding Kanonhstaton were not have been the right way to solve disputes. We shall see how this continues...

Moving forward we highlight recent actions around Six Nations where the highway leading to Kanonhstaton was blocked for a while on an INM day of action, and this event was followed up with the visit of Haudenosaunee and their settler allies to 5 sites of development to stop work and demand proper consultation. check @tworowsociety and @mohawkWorkers on twitter for updates from Brantford, Caledonia, Cayuga, Oshweken and area!

Closing INM updates we read a letter from Defenders of the Land spokesperson Arthur Manuel on the recent meeting with PM harper and the habit of AFN chief to consolidate around the weakest position. We also note that people can listen the an Al Jazeera piece with Pam Palmater and Derek Nepinak who destroy a conservative hack around Indigenous Rights! the Al Jazeera commentator knows more about the impacts of colonisation in canada more than any so-called canadian journo...

Dan then reads to and comments on a piece calling for solidarity in the environmental justice movement. The piece is a great plea but misses that solidarity with the Indigenous Rights movement will bring environmental justice, even if the author thinks we don't have time for that (which we don't, but that's okay :)

Ruben George of the Tseil Watuth nation on the west coast gave a speech at a recent anti-pipeline protest in vancouver - fighting both the kinder-morgan pipeline and the pacific trails pipeline - Ruben George's powerful words remind us that this is not just "A First Nations Problem". On the same theme but focusing on the southern route for tar sands crude, we play a piece called Why We Blockade - prepared after actions to disrupt Keystone XL developments - Stop the Flows!!!

We close the show with an update from the fight in Grassy Narrows - In a shameful move, Ontario has appealed a previous decision which affirmed the rights that the people of Grassy Narrows and other communities in treaty 3 land have when it comes to land development sovereignty. Check Freegrassy.org for more details and updates.

No Thanks! From the Rebel Spell to close it out musically

The Smash the State the Report is a segment on the weekly 2 hour AW@L radio (16:00-18:00est) on CKMS 100.3FM CKMS * Community * Co-op * Campus * Radio - Waterloo - http://soundfm.ca

AW@L Radio - Idle No More Day of Action Jan 11.

We (Aaron Lakoff) introduces INM resistance, dispute mainstream media bullshit and misrepresentation, give space to Chief Wallace Fox, report on prisoner solidarity actions + support from palestine

listen here: http://rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-11-inm.mp3

From the January 11th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - We star the show with a great introductory piece field by Aaron Lakoff for FSRN on Idle No More resistance then read a post What if Native Stop Subsidizing Canada from Dru OjaJay of the mediacoop which took down the mediacoop.ca servers due to its popularity. The post looks into the obvious fact that first nations subsidize canadian industries, economies and government activity, and that the treaties and agreements that established canada should still be the base principals for our relations ships with indigenous nations.. The piece also further exposes Christie Blatchford as a racist propagandist.

We then look to actions around the world in support of Idle No More including a banner drop over the 401, Canada's busiest highway. We look again to racist colonial media coverage of the Idle No More movement then play a very powerful piece from Chief Wallace Fox who spoke at the AFN meeting on january 10th 2013.

We then feature 2 segments on prisoner solidarity with INM, first with a piece by anti-poverty activist Nyki Kish who was inspired by the ongoing uprising of indigenous people in canada and was a part of a fast with 4 other members of the max range at grand valley institute in ktichener in solidarity with Theresa Spence and all imprisoned indigenous women.

Second is an interview with anti-colonial anti-capitalist alex hundert who is also fast in in jail with other members of his range at the penetang prison in solidarity with Chief Spence and Idle No More. This piece has been turned into a podcast on its own available on the rabble.ca podcast network.

Next up is decolonizingmeida.tumblr.com reports on likely start of roving blockades in sarnia of refineries which poison the nearby indigenous community without compensation.

We end with a piece from electronic intifada looking at Solidarity with Idle No More from Palestine in a piece which also rips apart racist writings posted in the liberal blog-dump huffpocan.

Idle No More update was a segment on the weekly 2 hour AW@L radio (16:00-18:00est) on CKMS 100.3FM CKMS * Community * Co-op * Campus * Radio - Waterloo - http://soundfm.ca

Idle No More update was a segment on the weekly 2 hour AW@L radio (16:00-18:00est) on CKMS 100.3FM CKMS * Community * Co-op * Campus * Radio - Waterloo - http://soundfm.ca </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>g20,anarchism,anarchy,resistance,news,politics,ecology,environment,solidarity,indigenous,canada,ontario,students,anti,capitalism,anti,poverty,socialism</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-11-inm.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

We debunk racist idle no more coverage, explain settler responsibility in canada, read words or resistance from the Zapatistas, and words of support from the Niagara Animal Defense League, and more!!

listen here: http://www.rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2013-01-04-smash.mp3

From the January 5th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - We start the show with the hip hop track - The Apology a collaboration from Henny Jack, Tru Rez Crew members Chief Mojo, Siance and James Blood, and Karboard Kid and Pete Nyce all from Six Nations and MC Sage from Warpole Island. The song is dedicated to the 50000+ missing indigenous children, a legacy of canada's racist residential school system, and to all those around the world who may have lost loved ones.

We then get into #IdleNoMore updates with a reading of Harsha Walia's excellent piece Debunking Blatchford and other anti-Native ideologues on Idle No More which digs into racist presentation of information in the mainstream media, then to a petition from change.org on pressuring the harper government to act on treaty responsibilities.

Next up is reading of a piece from @SettlerColonial called I am Canadian (because of treaties) which looks at the legitimacy of canada and canadians as a people through a history of agreements and treaties (which we have no honoured), then a look at the making of the first Idle No More map from the @mediacoop's Tim Groves. We leave the update on idle no more with two clips from a recent roundtable between Haudenosaunee, Tamil, and Ecuadorian land defenders and anti-colonials.

December 21st 2012 delivered as promised, and the re-emergence of the Zapatista's was declared en masse in the streets, in human streams of silence. it was beautiful and it was eerie - dan reads the "Next Steps" that the Zapatista National Liberation Army released as the poured into the cities in the mexican south east.

We then jump to a new track by The Mahones called The Revolution Starts Now!

After the song, the show resumes with an update from the Niagara Animal Defense League who have released a statement in support of the Haudenosaunee deer hunt in short hills near st. catherines, ontario. The statement is released among a flurry of accusations that the animal rights group cant be fro the hunt and for animals, however, the NADL bases their resistance in a decolonial frame which pushes them to look at their privilege in society, and the bases of what allows them to fight for animal rights on this land - treaties with indigenous nations.

Then a quick look at the new zine "Against Reversal" which is a 2 essay booklet educating folks on Line 9, the endbridge pipeline which they seek to ship tar sands oil through. We hop to good news that we missed in the spring - that is the complete protection of the site that was to be built into a landfill on the south shores of georgian bay. Site 41 had been resisted for years but the project went forward until Anishnabe women reached out to settler farmers to protect the land and the water by forming a protest camp which shut down construction. Always remember Direct Action Gets the Goods!!!!!

Before we leave you with another new track from Brutal Youth - called Best Policy, we drop an update on the Oshkimaadziig unity camp near midland ontario. Check out the new interview with Gibwainisi from Oshkimaadziig undertaken by Kalin Stacey of the Grand River Media Collective for the weekday morning (9-10est) news show on CKMS http://soundfm.ca.

From Attiwapiskat to #IdleNo More, RIIC.ca will help you report on it, and we report on it here! Also jump into the war on the poor in ontario and more!

listen here: http://rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2012-12-21-smash-idlenomore.mp3

From the December 14th 2012 edition of AW@L Radio - We start the show by looking into the Reporting in Indigenous Communities (riic.ca) project just after their one year anniversary post - from Attawapiskat to #idleNoMore. This project aims to help journalists tell the stoires of indigenous peoples without appropriating their voices - a decolonial approach to journalism.

We then get into an big update on the Idle No More movement and protests across canada and around the world with updates about the Dec 11 day of action from rabble.ca's Krystalline Kraus, a report form Kitchener's INM actions, and reports from Ottawa and London whtere over 2000 people marched in each of the cities in support of Indigenous rights and treaty responsabilities. In london a white women attacked a car in the INM procession with a hammer and it reminds us why many Indigenous people have never been idle and whey they continue their 500 years of resistance to a supremacist colonial government.

Dan reads an editorial from prof Jeff Dennis of McMaster university on why settlers and our governments need to wake up and care about the demands of the Idle No More movement, then we go to 10 000 Shares by Cambridge going out to @AlexHundert.

continuing on with Idle No More - UVIC prof Taiaiake Alfred and UofT PhD student Tolbold Rollo produced a 2 page pamphlet called Resetting and Restoring the Relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canada that is awesome, easy to understand, and downloadable from their website! Dan also gives it a read...

We then jump to more Smash the State news with an editorial from Amnesty canada calling on canada to start respecting human rights irregardless of the fact that other countries are also bad, or worse than canada.

Next up is a call out from Alex Hundert to call the jail he is in to demand access to books for prisoners. Alex, who has been fighting for access to quality books since being abducted to prison for organising protests to the G20 in toronto has asked folks to call the CNCC, demanding that those jailed have easy access to quality and challenging reading material, and that outside books be allowed in without the screening measures which make critical political material unacceptable for those jailed leaving only romance novels and PI books. Get all the details on this action at peaceculture.org. and from imprisoned nation Mumia Abu-Jamal, gives us a eulogy for Ruth Ma Ballard

We then look at the news that the ontario government will be gifting 1.4 billion dollars to corporations in the form of absolved tax debts. CUPE ontario head Fred Hahn responds by demanding that deadbeat corporation pay their taxes which would then fund social services and proper payment of public employees (like teachers). Hahn adds that the government is clearly fabricating the crisis so they can attack unions and social services.

Community Groups in BC havce responded to the missing womens inquiry report and it is posted up on the page of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs - *spolier* people are not impressed with the report.

and finally as we go to podcasts about the war on the poor in ontario (by AW@L Radio) and the Drug war in Guatamala (by Dawn Paley - FSRN) we also remind folks to check out the new weekday news show on http://soundfm.ca - The Daily GRRR! - hosted by the Grand River Media Collective from 9-10am EST. The podcast goes up on the web by noon (hopefully) so even if you miss it live you can still get your critical left news fix with a canadian focus by downloading the podcast!

Get all the details on this action at peaceculture.org. and from imprisoned nation Mumia Abu-Jamal, gives us a eulogy for Ruth Ma Ballard We then look at the news that the ontario government will be gifting 1.4 billion dollars to corporations in the form of absolved tax debts. The Smash the State Report is a segment on the weekly 2 hour AW@L radio (16:00-18:00est) on CKMS 100</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>g20,anarchism,anarchy,resistance,news,politics,ecology,environment,solidarity,indigenous,canada,ontario,students,anti,capitalism,anti,poverty,socialism</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/audio/download/17308/awlradio-rabble-2012-12-21-smash-idlenomore.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>
