Makeovers and Movers

Today was the we delivered more than 9,000 Movers for Moms® donation items collected throughout the Sacramento area in support of the fight against domestic abuse.

Our delivery day began with unexpected showers before the sun even rose.

Three women who worked or volunteered for WEAVE were also chosen for makeovers. They were chosen because they really went above and beyond their duties during WEAVE’s large events recently which included Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and The Big Day of Giving.

On deck this morning was also a team of stylists provided by Paul Mitchell’s cosmetology school. Paul Mitchell took care of the women’s hair and makeup and a style blogger working with WEAVE picked out their outfits.

Our movers got to the location by 8 a.m. It was still pouring and two broadcasting crews were already filming and ready to go.

We packed more than 200 boxes, filled with new and used items that WEAVE could use at their safe houses and their stores. The boxes with the brand new items such as shampoos, face masks, and more cosmetics would go to the safe houses for children to make Mother’s Day baskets.

It was really gratifying to see our month-long donations drive being appreciated by WEAVE’s staff and also everyone partaking in the event. Over the course of the drive, we’ve been approached by survivors of domestic abuse and other WEAVE volunteers who’ve been able to share their stories and the stories of the women they have come to into contact with.

Here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Sacramento, our motto is “Movers who care” and not only do we care about your personal possessions when moving them, but we also care about the people in our community. We’re so happy with the results from this year’s Movers for Moms® drive and we look forward to the next!

Make this year's final Walgreens Movers for Moms donations drive memorable with a selfie.

Our 8th Annual Moversfor Moms donations drive benefiting Women Escaping a Violent Environment will make its last rounds at Walgreens around the Sacramento region Saturday in Granite Bay.

As a bonus, Walgreens is offering a free print photo to donors submitting selfies with our mascot Truckie, through their mobile app. Donors will also receive a family four pack of tickets to aconcert from radio station The FISH whose performers include past American Idol contestants such as Danny Gokey and Colton Dixon.

Brand new wish list items such as combs, toiletries and clothes go directly to the families in WEAVE's safe houses. Gently used items are accepted as well and will go to WEAVE's thrift stores which help fund the nonprofit's mission.

This year SMUD joins Movers for Moms as one of their major sponsors in helping Two Men and a Truck bring relief to women in crisis come Mother’s Day. Partners for Movers for Moms include the SacramentoAssociation of Realtors, the FISH, Kaia Fit and many more.

8th Annual Movers for Moms® donations drive lends a helping hand to women in need

You can make Mother’s Day special for women and families in WEAVE.

Help make the difference by taking part in the 8th Annual Movers for Moms® drive. Coordinated by Two Men and a Truck® Sacramento and their partner The FISH, they’ll head to the Walgreens on Madison in Sacramento to collect donations the public wishes to drop off Saturday April 18.

Brand new wish list items such as combs, toiletries and clothes go directly to the families currently in WEAVE’s safe houses. Gently used items are accepted as well and will go to WEAVE’s thrift stores which help fund the nonprofits missions.

Two Men and a Truck® and its partners want to make this Mother’s Day special for ALL moms, including those going through a rough time in their lives.

Last year, Movers for Moms® Sacramento was able to collect more than 12,000 items to donate to WEAVE. This year’s goal is up to 14,000 and the public is really encourage to get in on this great cause to show these women love and appreciation.

The last Movers for Moms® live remote will be April 25 at the Walgreens in Granite Bay.

An obvious yet often forgotten task is to change your address. When the move is 4 weeks out you know you’ll change your address at some point, and as the week of the move approaches you have so many other things on the to-do list that you eventually forget. So here’s what you need to do to change your address:

Double check your address. No seriously. Make sure you live on a street not an avenue, if you live on a number street make sure it’s 9^th not Ninth or your mail – and maybe even your movers might end up at someone else’s home across town. It could happen.

Change of Address

Go to your local USPS or call 1-800-ASK-USPS and change it over the phone. You can also change it online, but do know that they charge $1 to verify your address. No biggie, but some people don’t want to pay that fee and we understand. Now, if you have a temporary moving situation, you’ll need to go into the post office location you want to use for a P.O. Box. Rates are dependent on how long you will use the P.O. Box but could also be a good option for renters who plan to move again.

Sacramento Movers Share: 6 Tips on Painting your New Home

Now that you have settled into your new home you may or may not have the desire to decorate accordingly to your taste. You got the new furniture picked out, couch & pillows, the sculptures or art work you may want to put up, but your room wall colors aren't quite to your liking. So lets paint! For those who may know already, or are first time painters. Here are 6 helpful tips on painting your New home.

Tip 1
Clean your walls

Some may not know, but having dirty walls when painting is a "No-no". Any dust particle, lent, dirt, or grease spot could destroy your smooth finish. Simply take a sponge, some water, and mild washing detergent and rotate in medium to large circles. Rinse with clean water once finished. Also make sure to scrape any unwanted peelings with a putty knife, then sand them smooth.

Tip 2
Blue tape is your Friend

Make sure when you are painting a room to ALWAYS grab some painter's blue tape. Using this will not only make your painting job appear professional, it will help you from getting paint on unwanted areas. Once you finished painting, remove the painter's blue tape almost immediately before it drys. This will prevent you from removing any paint as you peel the blue tape off.

Tip 3
Prime time!

Don't forget to prime your walls. Doing this will further increase the best results in the appearance, and sheen. Never paint over previous paint, always prime.

Tip 4
Grab a Brush

Brush on paint in the place where the roller cannot reach. This will help you reach those hard to get edges, corners, and trims.

Tip 5

Stir, Stir, Stir!

Stir your paint before you begin. Please don't paint straight from the can. That's another "no-no". Place the paint in a roller tray, and in a small bowl if you are using a brush for corners. It will make your world much easier.

Tip 6
Trims need love too

Once finished with all of your wall painting, and the wall are completely dry. Go back and add painter's blue tape to your walls on top of your trimmings, and give them some love. Paint the molding and the door frames back to its original color, possibly white, or you can paint to what ever color you choose.

Not every move is an easy move. Yes, sometimes it's a great thing to move into a new home, and create new beginnings. But other times we may not be emotionally ready for a new home, and just the thought of the word move itself may scare us. We could be holding sentimental values, or even memories from our old homes that we may not be ready to let go. Sometimes we have children who may have a hard time adjusting to their first move, and the idea of being 'uprooted' may not sit well with them. Adjusting to new beginnings can be hard on anyone. So here are 5 ways to help you keep memories of your old home.

1. WRITE ABOUT IT

It doesn't matter if you're a professional writer, or a casual journalist. You may have never written a thing in your life, but writing down your home memories is a great essential way to keep those memories stored for years to come. Here's some ideas that may help get you started. Try these:

What is one of your most favorite memories in the house?
What's your favorite place to be in the home?
What will you miss the most?
What will you not miss the most?

2. DO A WALK-THRU

With today's technology you can achieve almost anything with just the push of a button. Walk through the home your last day, and record with your family one last time. Doing this, not only gives yourself clarity, it can be sentimental therapy to the children as well. Go through the house and capture the front yard, backyard, inside...etc. As you film talk about your favorite memories. And If you have children, let them get involve as well. This is a time for everyone to leave with a happy mind-set.

3. TAKE PICTURES

Take pictures all over your home of your favorite rooms, or even furniture (still in home). Have your family share turns taking pictures of each other in rooms, and favorite areas of the home. Take a lot. You can later print out the photos and make a memorable album. You could even have your children who may feel homesick take pictures as well. This way they don't feel left out and more comfortable knowing that its OK to move on.

4. 3D PRINT IT!

As mentioned previously, technology has come a long way. If you can't stand the thought to leaving your home behind, 3D images may be your answer. You could hire professionals to take pictures of you and your home and turn it into a 3D image, so that it may look as realistic as possible. It may not be the easiest option, but the end results and memorable portrait will be amazing. You could frame your photos and hang it in your new home as a welcome home gift.

5. Let it go, Say Goodbye

On your last day, it probably will be the hardest. You may be standing in the living-room for the last time, or taking out your last box. The best way to move on is to say "Good-Bye", and let it go. Smell the air, touch the scratched stair case, feel the empty space in your home now that the furniture is gone, and listen to the surrounding echo sounds. 1. Donate

Purge all that stuff you don't need or want to pay someone to move for you. This is a great opportunity to give your old stuff to a local charity.

2. Forget the food

If you went grocery shopping recently and have a ton a food you don't feel like moving, donate it to the local food bank!

3. Utilize your space

Put your spices in the crock pot, keep clothes in drawers and keep your kids toys in the toy box. If you're using Two Men and a Truck we will pad & stretch wrap all of your furniture for no added cost.

4. Use your luggage to move

Place heavy items in your wheeled luggage. You're saving space and have a set of wheels to cart the otherwise heavy books out in. If you're using our services, we have lots of muscles to do that sort of work!

6. Two-night tote

When packing kitchenware consider ordering special made boxes, such as ones from TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Sacramento. TMTSacramento's custom boxes range from all different categories, Standard boxes, Picture & mirror boxes, Wardrobe boxes, and Dishware boxes (Click here for more details). Special made boxes can be essential to your move, because of the ease to quickly and safely protect your valuables. You should wrap each individual item separately, to protect and secure it from shifting or breaking. Glassware and Porcelain especially, should have secure surroundings when placing them into a box, try to pack these items separately from the rest of your belongings.

Make sure to have the right box for the job, (the heavier the smaller, ideally not very large). When wrapping individual items, NEVER use newspaper, unless you are stuffing the corners of a box for extra support, and less shifting. The reason to this is, newspaper tends to leave unwanted ink or newsprint marks on your valuable kitchenware. Invest in Bubble wrap, Packing foam, and (White) Packing paper, these wrapping materials are safer and more effective than newspaper (You can purchase these items here).

Example How to Wrap:

Wine Glasses:

(1) Fold wrapping paper into a extended rectangular shape. And wrap around the supporting base.

(2) Wrap wrapping paper securely around the bottom of the wine glass, and do the same to the cup of the glass.

(3) Shift wrapping paper into a medium ball, and stuff the cup for support.

(4) Last Bubble wrap or add Wrapping paper around the entire wine glass (as much needed) to secure its surroundings.

For Plates, Drinking Cups, Bowls and Silverware, follow similar methods, and include extra padding.

Last but not least, you should clearly label any boxes that contain any Crystal, Glassware, or Porcelain as 'fragile'. Don't rush when packing these items, take your time, you don't want any accidental chips or cracks from speed racing. Make sure to test the box's durability, and movement before you move them. If there is any shifting or jostling, add the newspapers or packing paper on the sides of the box for extra padding and security.

Calm Mind and Body:

Eliminate the clutter. Your mind is running all time and this can cause an overactive mind to stress. Apply your spring cleaning methods to all aspects in your life. Clear and scrub; clean not just your room, but also with work, friends and family. Forgive and forget. You want everyone on your team right now.
Meditate. Clear your predominant thoughts. Alleviate your daily tensions and improve your focus for a good night’s sleep and an energized day tomorrow.
Getting good sleep. Well-planned strategies are essential to deep, restorative sleep you can count on, night after night. Start by setting a regular bed time, and getting up at the same time everyday. How good are you at Tetris? In all of the hustle and bustle of your big move day, it’s easy to resort to the “quick and easy” way of packing your items. But before you start throwing boxes in the back of the truck and creating a bigger problem, take a step back and deep breath! You can handle this, and here we will include a list of materials you will need to pack your moving truck safely and efficiently, as well as some helpful tips for placement of your belongings in the truck.

What you will need:

Similar sized moving grade boxes
Furniture pads
Mattress bags
Packing tape
Tarps
Furniture/Appliance Dolly
Ropes, bungee cords and other tie-downs
Step stool
Sturdy working gloves
Locate ‘filler’ items to maximize padding (i.e. pillows, blankets, stuffed animals)

When packing a moving truck, it is best to visualize the game Tetris, filling in all the gaps to stabilize each row. Start with appointing a ‘supervisor’ to direct the placement of items for the best fit in the space available. Place the larger heavier items along the front wall of the truck as shown in the picture above. This will avoid sliding and elimination of possibly damaging your items. Keep in mind, the heavier boxes should be towards the bottom of the stack for stabilization and to protect the lighter more fragile items on top. Make sure to use filler items such as blankets and pillows when packing boxes on top of other furniture, it is best to be generous with padding to avoid broken, scratching or denting your goods. But the most important thing to remember: stay calm. Breathe deeply and work together with your helpers. Keep calm and move on!

It’s good to know which projects will actually increase the value of your home before you start renovating your home. Here is a list of renovations that will increase the value, as well as some that may not be worthwhile in the end.

Renovations to Do:

Upgrade your kitchen. Kitchen renovation should be at the top of the list. This is the room where families tend to spend most of their time. Some suggestions are to upgrade all the appliances to stainless steel, and installing counter tops made from engineered stone or granite to improve the aesthetic appeal.

Upgrade your bathroom. Replace old, cracked, or dirty toilets. They can be an eyesore! The same goes for a vanity, install one that recesses into the wall to save space. Proper lighting can also be a value booster, whether it’s replacing old lighting or adding a window for natural lighting. Another simple fix is to re-glaze your bath tub if you cannot afford to replace it.

Go green. In recent years there has been a growing demand for green housing. This involves anything that can make your house more energy efficient. Changes can be small such as adding a ceiling fan in every room.

Renovations to avoid:

Converting a room. Turning a bedroom into a room that is specific to your interests, such as a library or wine cellar is a risk. Once you start changing the structure of a room, you make it less valuable because the next owner may not want to spend the money to re-renovate the room. If this is something you insist on doing, make it easy to undo.

Laying down carpet. More and more people want natural hardwood flooring. It’s easier to clean, it doesn't show as much dirt, and it’s better for people who suffer from allergies.

Redoing your garage. Some people do some interesting things with their garages, such as turning them into family rooms or play rooms, and laying down carpet. Most people just want a garage to simply function as a garage; a place to park your car and keep dirty outdoor stuff. It’s okay to redo your garage in a sensible way, such as adding shelving or expanding it, but don’t overdo it.

Sacramento Movers Share Problems to Look For When Purchasing a Home

Buying a home can be tricky, you never really know what you’re going to get so you need to be sure that you inspect the home before you make any final commitments. Preexisting problems with the home can end up costing you a lot of money, so here are some things to check carefully when house hunting.

· Turn the taps on in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry to check the water pressure, performance and drainage. Keep an eye out for dirty water, and it can't hurt to drink the water for a taste test because the taste can vary from location to location.

· Check the hot water system. Make sure it’s the correct size to meet your family’s needs. Also check for leaks, rust and age; replacing a broken hot water system can be expensive and is not the sort of thing you can put off. If it is gas, check for the system's last servicing.

· Be extra cautious if the house has been recently painted because it could be masking serious problems such as mold.

· Check for damp areas on the walls and look for signs of peeling or bubbling paint, especially in bathrooms. Watermarks are a dead giveaway. Fixing the issues that arise from this can sometimes run well into the tens of thousands of dollars. Again if freshly painted, rely on your sense of smell.

· If possible, visit the house on a rainy day to check for leaky roofs, walls or ceilings.

· Kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive rooms in the house to renovate so pay close attention to the age and quality of cabinets, flooring, plumbing, and counter tops.

· Make sure your furniture and appliances fit in the rooms. Replacing certain items is very costly.

· Check the insulation, with energy prices so high, a well-insulated home can help keep you warm in the cooler months and cooler in the warmer months. It’s important to have at least a foot of insulation in the ceiling, and insulating the walls will also help reduce energy costs. Adding insulation can cost about $1,000. Blowing it into the walls adds several thousand dollars to that cost.

· Check the heating and air conditioning systems, both can be very costly to repair. If there isn't central cooling keep in mind that wall and window units area cheaper to replace, but cost more to run and if they stay in place year-round can cause water damage or mold in the surrounding area.

· If you happen to fall in love with a home that does need work, you can also try to negotiate a lower price or insist that the current home owner makes repairs before finalizing your offer.

Whether you just want to make you home look nice inside and out or you have your home up for sale, first impressions about your home are everything. Curb appeal matters whether or not you have a home up for sale because an attractive, well maintained home and yard is inviting and can give you a lift every time you come home.

· Tackle the maintenance details. Start by mowing the lawn and edging the driveway and walkway. Every line should be straight. Power wash the outside, and polish every surface that shines.

· Clean the walkways and driveway. Clean each surface then patch small holes and cracks. If you are feeling creative and up for the extra work, define the edges of a side walk or driveway with brick or stone.

· Arrange a container garden. Combine a variety of sizes, heights, shapes and textures along with a pop of color of blooming plants.

· Add trees or plant beds. Mature trees in a well-landscaped yard can add significant value to your home and provide shading for the home which can reduce air-conditioning costs in the summer. Even small trees can provide shade!

Here are a few tips on how to prep your house, and turn it into a marketable home that buyers cannot resist.

· De-Clutter. This is the time to get rid of everything you have been collecting over the years and no longer use (if you haven’t used in over a year, you probably don’t need it). Take this time to donate what you can, remove the books from bookcases, and pack up items that are not used daily.

· Rearrange your closets and cabinets. When buyers are looking at a home, they like to snoop and get a feel for every aspect of the home. Think of the message it sends if your closets and cabinets are unorganized and have items falling out of them. Clear the floors in your closets, line your shoes in a row, neatly stack your dishes, and turn your coffee cup handles facing the same way.

· Stay with one theme and style for your decorating. It makes shopping a bit easier and makes your home look and feel professionally decorated.

· Decorating does not have to break the bank; you can easily make your own decorations, centerpieces, and ornaments. The possibilities are endless. Try taking old ornaments that you no longer like or use and put them in a glass holder, or even redecorate them by covering them in glitter to make a whole new looking ornament.

· Let your nose know that the holidays are here. Place potpourri and scented candles throughout your home, or better yet, bake some cookies shortly before you have guests arrive.

· Use a lot of candles; they tend to make any room warmer and more inviting.

· Bring the holidays into every room. A great way to do this is to bring scented candles, potpourri, and small decorations into the kitchen, bathroom, and even the bedrooms.

Whether you’re moving to another apartment or into a house, you want to be sure that you leave your apartment in as close of a condition as you got it in. Here is a list to help you prepare your apartment for an inspection so you are able to walk away with your deposit back, and not have to worry about damages and fees.

Contact your utility companies and set a date to turn off your utilities. Do this so you are not billed for them after you have left your apartment.

Consider getting a list from your landlord or apartment complex stating what the estimated costs are for repairing certain items and use this as a guide to how strenuously you are going to clean your apartment.

Gather and look over various records associated with your stay, such as: apartment lease or rental agreement, and a copy of all agreements regarding damages between you and the landlord.

Remove all staples, thumb tack, or nail you have stuck in your ceiling and walls. Also, using a magic eraser, go through each room and remove and scuff marks on the walls floors and doors. (Be sure to test the magic eraser on a small part of surface first, it may clean some paints off).

Clean out your bedroom, wipe down any shelves provided, including in the closet.

Clean the bathroom. Make sure to thoroughly clean the sink, tub, and toilet removing any build up or residue on those surfaces. Before starting any projects, make a wish list. What would your ideal yard look like? How do you plan to use it? Do your kids or pets need a nice grassy area? Do you want a formal look or a natural one? These are just some of the questions to consider when landscaping. Once you have your vision, draw a sketch of your dream yard and include designated locations. Sacramento Movers Explain How To Pack A Kitchen Prior To Moving

The kitchen is one of the most challenging rooms to pack. Many people opt to have this room alone packed even if they can’t afford to have the whole house packed by a moving company. Considering how many oddly shaped or fragile items this room has, not to mention the sheer amount of pieces to be packed, it certainly makes sense to hire someone else to do it. However, for those trying to keep costs down or who would just rather do the job themselves, here are some tips for packing up the kitchen before a move.

Start the pack job well before the move day. The more time in advance the better as this will give you the opportunity to carefully pack each item and get extra supplies if necessary. For tips on moving large appliances including the refrigerator check out our blog post on preparing appliances for the move.

Begin with packing items that are not used often such as fine china dishware, stemmed glasses, seasonal or decorative dishes, souvenir mugs, as well as party platters or food warmers. Wrap china and glassware in plain packing paper so that newspaper ink will not bleed onto these delicate items. Thoroughly pad the bottom of the dish pack and put extra stuffing in the corners of the boxes which are the most likely to be smashed in. Place the heavier items toward the bottom of the box using cell dividers to keep dishes in place. Pack glasses and stemware toward the top of the box.

In small moving boxes pack cookbooks with their binding facing up. If you have additional space in this box you can stow away decorative items, coasters, place mats or other miscellaneous items. You can also use small boxes to pack up cooking utensils and kitchen knife sets. Pack away your spices in small moving boxes. You may want to pack oils and spice jars that could spill in individual zip lock baggies to keep everything else in the box clean and dry.

In large or medium size boxes, pack your pots, pans, and small appliances. Wrap each item. Pack the toaster oven, microwave, rice cooker, mixer, and coffee pot. Pots and pans can be wrapped and placed within each other, larger pans at the bottom and smaller ones stacked on top. You may want to think through ahead of time which items you will need till move day for last minute cooking and leave these aside.

As the last few days approach, begin packing your everyday dishware and utensils. If you want to really make things easier, you may consider getting paper plates and cups to use so that you can pack up your dishes before the last minute. Remember, heavier items at the bottom, lightweight glassware up top.

If you are considering moving to another country, there are many arrangements that will need to be made. Not only are you uprooting your home and family, but you also must adapt to new laws and customs. Keep track of all the relocation to-do’s for a move to a foreign country with this checklist.

□   Make sure your passport is current

□   Make arrangements for moving pets

□   Make arrangements for moving specialty items such as pool tables, grand pianos, or wine and liquor collections

□   Consider storing items at either end

□   Have at least three household movers come out and perform onsite estimates for the move

□   Get timing and pricing guarantees in writing from the mover that you select

□   If you own a home, contact your real estate agent to help you sell the home or contact a property manager to rent it out

□   Sell your car or make arrangements to have it shipped overseas

□   Research health insurance and primary care physicians available in the area you are moving to. Gather your medical records and pack them with your important papers or have them sent over directly from your current physician.

□   Make sure that your bank is aware of your relocation, and open a banking account in the country you are moving to if necessary.

□   Develop a timeline for packing and stick to it. Begin with items you will not need for a while

□   Look for accommodation in the new country. You may do better to stay in a hotel or apartment for a few weeks or months until you can find a suitable place to buy or rent.

□   Wait to buy or sign a lease on a place until you have seen it in person. Don’t rely on internet to make that decision.

□   If possible you may consider visiting the country prior to the move to check out the real estate that’s available.

□   Talk to a lawyer about purchasing property in another country so that you can fully understand taxes, fees, liens, caveats, etc.

□   Your current attorney may be able to give you a recommendation for an attorney in your new country

□   Host a garage sale to get rid of any excess items that you don’t need across country or don’t wish to store
