Guardian showcases UHB’s HR Transformation Project and Axispoint’s role in it

An article in The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/healthcare-network/2012/jan/09/how-one-trust-transformed-hr?newsfeed=true) describes how University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust embarked on a wholesale process-led transformation of HR to enable it to move the focus away from low-value and transactional activities to value-added and transformational Talent Management.

Axispoint has been an instrumental part of this transformation since August 2010 and our involvement and contribution continues into 2012.

IBM releases Case Study on Hanson (UK)’s Learning Management System

Hanson worked with Axispoint, an IBM Premier Business Partner, to design a new training solution by using IBM Business Process Manager to coordinate various underlying systems into a seamless process, managed via a simple user interface. The project team used agile development techniques to ensure that the project focused on meeting end-users’ needs and could adapt to changing requirements...

New IBM BPM 7.5 release

On Friday 3rd June IBM released their latest version of their flagship product under the WebSphere brand – Business Process Manager. This sees the coming together of the Process Server and Lombardi BPM product lines and has been eagerly awaited by the community.

But now the wait to see what it actually looks like is over and Axispoint have been downloading the software so that we can begin evaluation and familiarisation.

Axispoint speaks at IBM IMPACT in the UK

Axispoint was once again invited to speak at IBM IMPACT as the UK's largest specialist BPM consultancy. We exhibited and gave a speech at the UK IMPACT conference on Thursday 19th May.

Following the success of IBM IMPACT in Las Vegas at the beginning of April, IBM has brought the IMPACT conference to the UK and Axispoint’s David Brakoniecki was asked again to share his unique practitioners perspective on BPM implementation.

David spoke about Axispoint’s successful work with University Hospital Birmingham, with guest speaker CIO of University Hospital Birmingham, Stephen Chilton. David and Stephen took the stage in the afternoon slot, Session 3.2, to discuss how BPM has increased business agility at one of the UK’s largest hospitals.

The London based event was held at The Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel and we will feature a review of the successful day shortly.

Larger office space for Axispoint's London Branch

Due to our continued growth the London branch of Axispoint Solutions Ltd. have moved offices from Cavendish square to a much more spacious office south of the river. The new London office can be found at The Foundry, 154-156 Blackfriars Rd, London SE1 8EN

With the recent launch of IBM BPM v7.5 we anticipate further growth in the BPM implementations sector, which plays directly to Axispoint Solutions strengths. So we have taken this opportunity to bootstrap our ability to service this growing demand. Our successful expansion, which includes new IBM Websphere Lombardi Edition projects for University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) and Hanson, has necessitated recruiting new staff, causing us to require a larger office for our London base.

Axispoint spoke at the IBM Impact 2011 Global Conference in Las Vegas in April, which this year was attended by over 6,500 delegates.

The UHB & Axispoint session is in the BPM and Decision Management section of the conference, in one of the Technology ProgramWorkstreams. The session was titled “Using BPM to remove cost & enable an Enterprise Wide HR Transformation programme”. Stephen Chilton IT Director of UHB NHS Foundation Trust will share the speaker’s podium alongside David Brakoniecki, Axispoint’s BPM Practice Director.

The session provided an overview of how UHB are moving their HR function from Transaction Management to a focus on Talent Management, through a Process Transformation Programme.

The Impact Delegates will get the opportunity to understand UHB’s HR vision and be taken through how the project went about the discovery, prioritisation and delivery of the various projects in the transformation using the IBM BlueWorks & Websphere Lombardi toolsets. The audience also got an appreciation of how UHB have used BPM (Business Process Management) to transform Recruitment, Appraisal and Training Delivery within the Hospital to achieve significant cost reductions.

Axispoint, Intouch with Health, Simpler and IBM form strategic alliance

Axispoint, Intouch with Health, Simpler and IBM have formed strategic alliances to create efficiencies across the NHS using LEAN and process improvement techniques.

In light of the current economic environment and the pressures being imposed on the NHS, Axispoint are hosting 2 events in January to share our thoughts on potential savings that could be made across the NHS by taking a process approach.

The events will run on the 25^thJanuary at BMA House, London and on 26^th January at IBM, Warwick with guest speakers Stephen Chilton, Chief Information Officer University Hospital Birmingham and Anne Shenk, Director of IS, Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The day will cover practical topics such as ‘Outpatients Process Improvement’, ‘ A Process Approach’, ‘Applying Process across back end functions’ and an in depth look at our approach to recruitment automation.

Recruitment Process Automation:

Axispoint engaged with University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) early in 2010 to improve efficiencies across back office functions using both a Lean approach and BPM (Business Process Management). The strategy is to deliver a world class HR service to its 7,000 staff. UHB have a vision, which is in line with the latest NHS white paper, called me@UHB; this vision essentially uses IT as an enabler, targeting the move of staff to a self service environment in order to improve efficiencies across the board.

Axispoint with UHB have tackled the ‘Vacancy to Start’ Process and discovered that if we cut the time to recruit by just 1 week, UHB will be making a saving of £278.00 per vacancy per annum. If you consider a trust such as UHB has 700 recruitment instances a year, this equates to a £195,000.00 per annum saving.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and a 1 week reduction can be achieved through simple process automation, couple this with LEAN techniques and process improvement the savings are astounding.

Nigel Winship Joins Axispoint

Axispoint Solutions Ltd, a leader in Business Process Management (BPM), is pleased to announce today that Nigel Winship has joined the company as Director of Alliances.

Nigel brings with him 15 years of experience in shaping, leading and delivering business process change programmes across a range of sectors from Financial Services (e.g. Barclays/Deutsche Bank/Allied Irish Bank), to Government (e.g. Companies House) to Telecoms (e.g. O2).

Nigel founded and was Managing Director of 1st Thought, one of the UK's leading niche BPM consultancies. Over a five year period 1st Thought grew to become the UK's only TeamTIBCO partner (TIBCO's elite partner designation), as well as forging successful links with IBM. Nigel sold 1st Thought to Liaison Technologies, a US based integration and data management company in 2009. Nigel stayed on to integrate the 1st Thought business, before going onto run Liaison's European consultancy practice, with teams in the Nordics, Holland and the UK.

NHS Recruitment Accelerator

Axispoint embarked on an engagement with University Hospital Birmingham early in 2010 to work with them to improve efficiencies across back office functions using a Lean approach and BPM (Business Process Management). The strategy is to deliver a world class HR service to its 7,000 staff and UHB have a vision, which is in line with the latest NHS white paper, called me@UHB. This vision essentially uses IT as an enabler and is targeting moving the staff in to a self service environment to improve efficiencies across the board.

The Axispoint and UHB Development team have taken a modular approach to this vision and looked for a ‘quick win’ in the HR function which is aimed at reducing the recruitment cycle for everyone non medical in the trust. The business case was based on that reducing the ‘Vacancy to Start’ cycle by just one week will save the Trust £278 per vacancy per week in Agency spend alone.

With UHB having over 700 recruitment instances per annum the worst case savings from just streamlining and automating processes and a one week improvement releases a saving of circa £195,000 per annum on just Agency spend. Aside from this the team is taking this further with the solution being integrated into NHS jobs and ESR (Electronic Staff Record System) which are particular points of pain for Trusts and a real differentiator to other solutions available to the NHS today, as these 2 systems are notoriously difficult to integrate with.

With the initiatives the NHS have in place at the moment, real consideration was given to the commercials surrounding implementation and solution costs and Axispoint and UHB have been truly innovative as Capital charges for solutions are not feasible, and Cloud Saas Models (software as a service) not being an option due to the integration and legal complexities, the partnership have constructed an innovative OPEX Onsite Licence model approach for a monthly / quarterly licence fee that is only payable when the solution is implemented and ‘gone live’ meaning the cost savings are funding the monthly / quarterly fees.

The Recruitment Process Accelerator solution is being opened up to further NHS trusts by Axispoint in conjunction with UHB to share the cost savings across the NHS. The solution has created such value to UHB mainly because since the introduction of mandatory use of NHS Jobs and ESR across the NHS, the processes and systems for recruitment have been standardised, but this standardisation has created inefficiencies with duplication and sequential tasks inherently built in to the systems and processes.

Chris joins from Experian, where he held a number of roles including Global Senior HR Business Partner for Experian’s Decision Analytics business and EMEA HR Director where he was responsible for HR Strategy and Operations across three business lines and 22 countries.

Prior to Experian, Chris was European HR Director for Right Management, the Global leader in Career Transition and HR Consulting, and worked for a number of companies in the Technology and Financial Services sectors as an international resourcing and recruitment specialist.
