Who is Herbert Kikoy? We are neither close nor do I know him personally but get to chat with him about simple things like business and social media on certain occasions.

Very recently I've learned that he's into photography too and has taken a keen interest on nature as his subject like me! It's very easy to fall in love with nature if you're in the Philippines with its spectacular islands and rare species.

Tell me about yourself that people dont't know:
~ Hmmm... My circle of friends knows a lot about me but the only thing they don't know is that I dont know how to drive either a motorcycle or a car. Stupid huh?

How did you get started in photography? and what camera did you use?
~ After I graduated college and start working and getting a cellular phone with a camera, I had this "eye" to see things in a different way, (not a third eye though) so out of curiousity, I took them from the camera of my cellular phone. So that's it, I think that's how it all began :)

How would you characterize the style of your photography?
~ I am a minimalist type of person so I prefer things to look simple yet they represent something captivating.

Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?
~ Uhmmm.. I think I influenced myself :D

How did you become a photographer? And When did your career start as a professional photographer?
~ I do not call myself that way and I never had a career in it. I consider this as a hobby (too late to realize that this is a very expensive hobby).

Why did you make photography your career?
~ Like what I said earlier, I do not consider this as a career or something, just a hobby :)

How did you go about selling your first photograph?
~ Published a couple of images to stock sites yet wasn't able to sell one. Hoping to earn some in the future though :D

What makes a good photographer in your opinion?
~ A good photographers is someone who can captivate simple things and turn it into a masterpiece.

Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?
~ Most of the time I use the lens kit as most of the time, we (my family) always end up on restaurants. :D

Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
~ I think the lenses :)

What is the most rewarding part of photography?
~ When you posted your photos on Facebook and there are several people liking and commenting on your shots.

What is your most embrassing experience as a photographer?
~ i have no single idea as I rarely went out to shoot and most of the time, I always get stuck at work.

How photography change your life?
~ uhmmm..... I really do not know exactly. As long as I can see that my shots are good then im happy with it.

What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer?
~ Uhmm, from a newbie like me, I think those aspiring people who want to venture photography, you must be prepared in all aspect especially "money" as photography is one expensive stuff.

What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)?
~ He/she must learn in the first place that photography is an expensive hobby :)

What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
~ You can shoot all you want and shoot the way you wanted (just dont go and sneak on your neighbors windows)

I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? and why there?
~ I would always prefer beaches and mountains, we used to trek before and seen a lot of captivating scenes

What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it?
~ My goal as of this time is to get a good SLR body and once I have it, I am all good to go :D

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
~ I would probably an engineer now if I never spoiled my college days

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
~ A father, a son and a husband as always :)

~ Uhmm... I want people to remember that I took this "photo" .. something like that :D

Adamson University - Intramuros

One of the old University inside the Intramuros is Adamson Univesity.

What is the story behind this university? Why we can't see the old building of this university?

What history behind the Adamson Univesity? According to the blog site of Adamson University; The Institution was founded in 1932 by George Lucas Adamson, a Greek national in the Philippines, as a School of Industrial Chemistry and Engineering. It was the first such school in the Philippines. The three Adamsons administered the school themselves: George Lucas was President, Alexander was Vice-President, treasurer and registrar, and George Athos was Dean of the College of Engineering. The first school building was located at San Miguel, then transferred to Intramuros, and during the war, to the E-building of Meralco.

| Post Sign : Ateneo Municipal de Manila (Clamshell 1) (till 1932 before it moved to Padre Faura in Ermita, and later, to Loyola Heights, Quezon City) then occupied by Adamson University in 1939.

Before finally settling on its permanent home along San Marcelino Street in 1946 after the war, the school had three different locations: Sta. Cruz (1932–1933), San Miguel (1933–1939) and Intramuros (1939–1941). In San Marcelino, the university expanded with the acquisition of the Meralco building in 1968 and the St. Theresa's College-Manila campus in 1977, both adjacent.

Sto. Domingo Church - Intramuros

One of the oldest church inside the Intramuros, Sto. Domingo church.

What is the History behind this church?

How this church influence the people inside the Manila?

Here some of the answer i got in the net and ofcourse in my reasearch inside the Intramuros.

According to the Intramuros blog site ; "The Sto. Domingo church was built on a site near the University of Sto. Tomás University, that is, on the northeastern flank of Intramuros, near the Pasig. On this site, four other churches had been built; the fifth and last of the Sto. Domingos was in the Neogothic style, designed by Felix Roxas Sr., with construction supervised by Fray Sixto and Fray Ristoro. This was the church damaged by Japanese bombardment on 21 December 1941.

Arriving in 1587, the Dominicans were welcomed by the Franciscans. Bishop Domingo Salazar contributed 300 pesos toward the purchase of land and 3,000 more for construction. On 6 August 1587 ground was broken for a church of light material. Completed on 1 January 1588, the image of the Sto. Rosario was enthroned in the church. In 1589, the church’s roof collapsed compelling the Dominicans to build a second church of stone inaugurated on 9 April 1592. This church burned during a fire on 30 April 1603, which consumed a third of the city." To read more about this article click here.

The Sto. Domingo Church now (May 2012)

According to some historian "The Santo Domingo Church was the Mother Church of the Dominican Order in the Philippines."

And this church was the home for the legendary Marian image of La Naval.

After the war, the Dominicans built a new Sto. Domingo, designed by Jose Maria Zaragosa in the Spanish Moderne style, along Quezon Blvd. in Quezon City. This capacious church houses the image of the Sto. Rosario, whose feast is marked by the La Naval procession.

Ateneo Municipál de Manila

One of the oldest and the first Jesuit University in the Intramuros, the Ateneo Municipál de Manila or also know now as Ateneo de Manila University.

Anu nga ba ang kasaysayan ng unibersidad? Paano nakatulong ang unibersidad? Sinu ang mga promeninteng to na nag-aral sa paaralan na ito? Anu na ang itsura ng unibersidad ngaun?

According to Intramuros Site ; Turned over to Jesuit administration by the city of Manila in 1859, the Ateneo Municipál was a school for boys. Initially, the Jesuits hesitated taking charge of the school as they were returning to the Philippines after more than eight decades of absence to take charge of the Mindanao missions. (The Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1768). The instructions they received stipulated that they were to ask explicit permission from higher superiors should they commit themselves to education. The city council prevailed upon the Jesuits to take charge of the school then called Escuela Pia. With the necessary permissions secured, Fr. José Cuevas accepted the school and in December 1859, the Jesuits began instruction in a modest building along Arsobispado St. near the archbishop’s residence.

The Tourism’s Clamshell 1 (The Ateneo Municipál de Manila Now 2012 )

Founded and supported by the city, the school was allowed to bear Manila’s coat of arms. The institution began as a boarding school but started accepting day boarders. Her illustrious alumnus, José Rizal, began his studies as a day boarder and only in his second year did he become an interno or boarder.

This school was later expanded with the addition of a preparatory college that prepared students for studies in the university, offering such courses as pre-law, surveying and mechanics.

From 1879-1888, the college church of San Ignacio was built beside the Casa Mision and on a piece of property cut from the archbishop’s own garden. The city council allowed the Jesuits to build a bridge over Anda to connect the Casa Mision, which was their residence with the school and dorm.

At the turn of the century a third floor was added to the school buildings and in the early 20th an elaborate entrance was designed and executed by Isabelo Tampingco. A fire that ravaged the southwestern quadrant of the city in 1932 damaged the Ateneo. The fire occurred at night, and the student boarders and the Jesuits had to save as much as they could of the Ateneo. The student boarders moved to Ermita, where the Jesuits had built the Escuela Normal de San Francisco Xavier for the education of teachers and had transferred the Manila Observatory.

During World War II, the Ateneo moved its quarters to different parts of the city while trying to maintain a semblance of normality. By the end of the war, the buildings at Ermita, along the road now named after the Jesuit founder of the Manila Observatory, Fr. Federico Faura, was in ruins. In 1951, the Jesuits transferred the Ateneo to Loyola Heights, in Quezon City, where it has remained. In 1959, Ateneo became a university.

The Ateneo archives in Quezon City preserves documents and pictures relating to the Ateneo in Intramuros, among them are award-giving programs which list prominent Ateneo alumni of the Spanish era like José Rizal. A Tampingco screen saved from the San Ignacio church, decorated with carvings in the round of acanthus leaves and braided rope, is in the Ateneo’s Rizal Library.

The church (neo-classical in style with two towers) was built by the Jesuits in 1889. The famous Filipino sculptor Isabelo Tampingco and his students worked on the lavish woodwork on its interior. However, it was greatly destroyed during the war and was left in ruins to date. At one time it became the E.J. Neil warehouse. Currently, there is an archaeological excavation at the site of its ruins, it is said that San Ignacio Church will be the future site of Museo de Intramuros that will house the religious collection of Intramuros Administration.

Indeed, the 270 years of galleon trade that became one of the Spanish Empire’s economic machinery and an event that triggered globalization into a whole new level.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Fray Andres de Urdaneta started their expedition towards the Philippines on November 21,1564–more than 20 years after Magellan was killed in Cebú, and eventually started the Spanish Colonial Era in the Philippines that lasted for more than three centuries. And it was Fray Andres de Urdaneta that discovered the tornaviaje–the route back to Nueva España or México which would eventually start the galleon trade.

According to traveleronfoot: The plaza was first known as Plaza Aduana. In 1897, the colonial government named Plaza de los Martires de la Integridad dela Patria in honor of the Spanish soldiers who died during the Philippine Revolution. The present name was given by the American in 1902.

In 1982, the Intramuros Administration restored the plaza and in 2000 it was renovated with the statue of King Philip II. The statue was unveiled by the Spanish monarch Queen Sophia as part of the closing activities of Philippine Independence Centennial.

Here some short history about the Letran according to http://en.wikipedia.org/ The name San Juan de Letran is derived from the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, considered as the Mother Church of Christendom.Early in the history of the colegio, its chapel was granted many of the privileges enjoyed by the major basilica. Saint John the Baptist, for whom the basilica is named, is the patron saint of the Colegio.
The college was originally founded by Don Juan Geromino Guerrero in 1620, a retired Spanish officer and one of the Knights of Malta, in Intramuros as 'Colegio de Niños Huerfanos de San Juan de Letran. The school was intended to educate and mold orphans to be good Christian citizens.
Around the month of May in 1632, Fray Diego de Santa Maria, O.P. arrived at the Sto. Domingo convent from Spain via Mexico. He was officially assigned to this same convent on April 23, 1633 and was given the task of conventual porter. He founded the Colegio de Huerfanos de San Pedro y San Pablo. As Don Guerrero grew old, the two schools were fused together, and in 1706, the Provincial Chapter of the Dominicans in the Philippines decided to adopt officially the name Colegio de San Juan de Letran in memory of its first founder, Don Guerrero.

The college was founded in 1620. Colegio de San Juan de Letran has the distinction of being the oldest college in the Philippines and the oldest secondary institution in Asia. It is owned and administered by the friars of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) of the Philippine Dominican Province. The school has produced Philippine presidents, revolutionary heroes, poets, legislators, members of the clergy, jurists, and it is also one of the only Philippine schools that has produced several Catholic saints who lived and studied on its campus. The school's patron saint is St. John the Baptist while its patroness is Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. The campus contains two statues, representing the two foremost alumni in the fields of secular and religious service: former Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon and Vietnamese Saint Vicente Liem de la Paz.

Letran has programs in Business, Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Digital Arts, Communication Arts, Accountancy, Engineering etc. The colleges are divided into six departments: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), College of Education (CoEd), Institute of Communication (iCOMM), Institute of Information Technology (iIT), and College of Engineering (CoE). This building in Manila once housed the National Waterworks And Sewage Authority (NAWASA) and is now a hall of justice.

According to http://en.wikipilipinas.org/, In 1878, Spanish Philanthropist Francisco Carriedo y Peredo donated funds to laid out in old Manila the first water system in the Philippines. It was called the Carriedo System. The construction of a water system delivered 16 million litters of water per day to 300,000 people. By 1909, the capacity of the system was increased to 92 million liters per day by the addition of pumping facilities and the construction of Wawa Dam. The name of the system evolved from Manila Water Supply System in 1908 to Metropolitan Water District in 1919. During the 1920s, Ipo Dam was created using water resource from the Angat basin. The capacity was increased in 1938 to 200 million liters per day for an urban population of 900,000 people. In 1954, its name was changed to National Waterworks and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA). After 18 years of service the government changed its name to Metropolitan Waterworks Sewerage System (MWSS), by which it is known to this date. From a national agency, the MWSS by virtue of its charter was tasked to control over all waterworks and sewerage system in a service area including the National Capital Region, the entire province of Rizal and part of the Province of Cavite, of a territory of more then 200,00 hectares.

Ayon ulit sa Intramuros Administration Site; Residence and office of the governor general. Although the site for the governor’s palace facing the Plaza Mayor had been determined early on, no structure was built on it until the late 17th century. In the beginning, the governor’s residence was apparently built nearer Fort Santiago, facing Plaza Militar.

The palace was rebuilt at its present site by Gov. Gen. Fausto Cruzat y Góngora (1690-1701) following an atrial plan, divided by a wing that bisected the open atrium. The southern half housed the governor’s residence on the superior floor and the Secretaría de Gobierno on the lower floor, while the northern half housed the Real Audiencia or Supreme Court. The Audiencia occupied the northern wing until it acquired a building of its own in 1788.

In 1850, Gov. Gen. Narciso Claveria gave the palace a new façade in the Neoclassical idiom. The earthquake of 1863 damaged the palace. Plans to restore it were abandoned when another earthquake in 1880 struck Manila. By then the governor had transferred residence to Malacañang in the San Miguel district, upstream of the Pasig.

The building was in ruins until its remaining walls were integrated into 14-story building, called Palacio del Gobernador. The structure houses government offices and the Intramuros Administration.

According to Intramuros Administration Site; Ayuntamiento Aka Casas Consitoriales or Cabildo, the building was roughly equivalent to city hall. Its northern wing housed the cabildo or city council composed of alcalde and the regidores (mayor and councilor). It also had other offices including that of the governor general. A jail was part of the structure.

Although Legazpi had mapped out a site for the casas consistoriales no structure was built until the incumbency of Gov. Gen. Francisco Tello, who begun construction around 1599. In Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las islas Filipinas (1607) the building is described as made of cut stones, monumental and pleasing. The first floor housed the courts and jail; the second the administrative offices, a chapel, and archives. The building, probably just a single wing, may have been damaged by the earthquakes of 1645 and 1658 because a document of 1684 requests for funds to rebuild. Meanwhile, the city council met in a house rented from the Jesuits’ Colegio de Manila.

On 31 January 1735, the corner stone for a second building was laid. Completed in 1738, this building survived well into the 19th century when the 3 June 1863 earthquake damaged it heavily. This 18th century building is documented by a painting by Karuth, an engraving, an elevation plan, and a photograph of it in ruins. The second Ayuntamiento had a central clock tower above its façade and two symmeterical wings. Bulbous wrought iron balconies decorated the second story and a covered arcade characterized the first floor.

The architect Eduardo Lopez Navarro was commissioned to design the third Ayuntamiento. Construction begun on 29 April 1879 but had to stop because of an earthquake in 1880. Navarro’s plans were revised to make them more structurally sound and in 4 April 1881 work continued. Another stoppage occurred on 21 March 1885. The building may have been completed not much later because by the turn of the century, Juan Hervas was commissioned to redesign the vestibule.

Navarro planned the third Ayuntamiento in the Neoclassical idiom, opting for severity and well proportioned members. The quadrilateral structure was built around an atrium. Hervas’s renovated vestibule had a harlequin floor of black and white marble, an elegant staircase decorated with a wrought iron balustrade.

The staircase lead to the upper floor where mayor’s office was located. There was a waiting room for men and another for women who had business to transact with city hall. The rooms were furnished in the overstuffed Victorian manner with paintings by Spanish and Filipinos, bentwood Vienna chairs, and bric a brac. The city chapter’s session hall had a ceiling painted with allegorical figures and glass chandeliers imported from Europe. The most famous feature of the building was its ceremonial “Marble Hall.” This rectangular room, with a white marble floor, had a coffered ceiling from which hung glass and brass chandeliers. It was an elegant hall for the social events of Manila’s elite.

In the 20th century, the Ayuntamiento earned the sobriquet “Marble Palace,” because of its generous use of this material. The Ayuntamiento was used as the meeting place for the Philippine Assembly convened in 1907.

Ruined by the bombardment of Manila in 1945 it has never been restored. The ruins of the Ayuntamiento stands on the eastern side of Plaza Roma.

According to Intramuros Adminstration Website

Aka Intendencia: Customs House. A 1796 instruction indicated that the Aduana or Customs House be located within the fortified city to attract merchants to remain within the walls rather than outside it. The Aduana replaced the Alcacería de San Fernando (built 1752), located on the opposite or northern bank of the Pasig.

The Aduana 2012 Shoot

Tomás Cortes was given charge of project. In 1822, he submitted plans for the project and construction began in 1823. Despite objections that the new Aduana had insufficient space for warehousing and was too far from the port, construction continued and in 1829 the building was completed. It was a handsome building designed in the Neoclassical tradition. Built around two atriums, the central bay had three arched entrances and two principal staircases. This was flanked by two symmetrical wings of three stories. Its rectangular fenestration and French windows on the upper most story were decorated with rustication. The firm of Manuel Perez repaired the building’s roof in 1861, following plans by Luciano Oliver. The earthquake of 1863, 1869 and 1872 damaged the building. Reconstruction of the Aduana was awarded to Luis Perez Yap-Sionjue who began work in 1874. Plans for reconstruction were drawn by Luis Cespedes after an earlier plan by Felix Roxas, Sr. and an anonymous architect were found deficient.

The building served as a central treasury. In the 20th century it became the Central Bank Building and a cement vault was built in the atrium. The building was damaged by war but was repaired and remained as the Central Bank until the completion in the 1970s of a new Central Bank along Roxas Blvd. The building was damaged by fire and left abandoned for a long time. The structure is presently being restored to become the National Archives for records of the Spanish colonial period. Restoration began in 1996 during the centennial of the Philippine Revolution.

Romina is one of the admin of the premiere tri-media organization Helios Project International. It was at Helios' XPC Challenge where I first met her. I was really anxious to meet her but who wouldn't be? Her expertise in her chosen craft is evidenced by her exquisite work in shooting music or concert events.

Our acquaintance may have been short but it was undoubtedly filled with substantial tips in improving someone else's perceived hobby into passion.

Tell me about yourself that people dont't know:

I took BS Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas. I'm currently working as a 3d Renderer for an architectural firm. I love music. I listen mostly to indie, alternative rock, experimental, pop and acoustic.

I have been doing photography since 2008. I shoot portraits, street photography, travel and music photography. I belong to a photography club, The Helios Project International.

How did you get started in photography? and what camera did you use?

I am fond of taking pictures since I was a kid. I think I first had my own camera when I was 10. I bought my DSLR which I am still using on October 2008. It is a Nikon D40.

How would you characterize the style of your photography?

I really don’t know how to define my style but I tend to capture simple subjects that tell a story.

Who or what influenced you to become a photographer?

No one really influenced me when I first started doing photography. But when I ventured into music photography, Niña Sandejas became my mentor.

How did you become a photographer? And When did your career start as a professional photographer?

I have been shooting gigs and concerts for a while. Usually, those gigs are held in small bars where I can shoot for free. The first event that I covered was SYKES’ Year End Party held at MOA Concert Grounds last December 2011.

Why did you make photography your career?

It is something that I am passionate about, both music and photography.

What makes a good photographer in your opinion?

A good photographer sees things that way a normal person wouldn’t.

Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?

I can’t really answer that question since I only own a kit lens but if you were to ask me what is my ideal walk-around lens, it would be a 17-50mm f/2.8.

What is the most rewarding part of photography?

I think the most rewarding part is when an artist or band appreciates my work.

How did photography change your life?

It led me to places I wouldn't normally explore. Through photography, I met a lot of people from different walks of life whom I share my passion with.

What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer?

Keep on shooting. I still consider myself an aspiring professional photographer since I'm still new in the business.

What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)?

It depends on what type of photography you're interested in. Try to find inspiration from books, magazine, internet or even see works of other photographers.

What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.

The good thing about being a photographer is that you get to travel, meet a lot of people and see live bands. The bad thing is that you rarely have a photo taken of yourself. Haha!

I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? and why there?

Being with The Helios Project, we would often do photo walks or organize photo shoots. Some of our usual gatherings are held within the Manila area specifically Binondo, Quiapo or Intramuros. Sometimes we also do nightscape shoots around the metro or attend gigs where we shoot bands.

What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it?

My goal as a music photographer is to document big events within or outside the country. As my mentor would say, I still have a long way to go.

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?

I would be a freelance architectural designer or 3D architectural renderer.

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?

Wow, 20 years is a long time. That's hard to tell but I think I would still be doing architectural stuff and music photography.

Isa sa mga dinarayong lumang simbahan ng mga tao sa may kamaynilaan ang Basilica Minore de San Sebastián o mas kilala bilang San Sebastián Church.

According to the historian, Basilica Minore de San Sebastián, also known as San Sebastián Church, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Manila, the Philippines. It is the seat of the Parish of San Sebastian and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Completed in 1891, San Sebastián Church is noted for its architectural features. An example of the revival of Gothic architecture in the Philippines, it is the only all-steel church or basilica in Asia.and claimed as the only prefabricated steel church in the world.

In 2006, San Sebastian Church was included in the Tentative List for possible designation as a World Heritage Site. It was designated as a National Historical Landmark by the Philippine government in 1973.

Construction

The prefabricated steel sections that would compose the church were manufactured in Binche, Belgium. According to the historian Ambeth Ocampo, the knockdown steel parts were ordered from the Societe Anonyme des Enterprises de Travaux Publiques in Brussels. In all, 52 tons of prefabricated steel sections were transported in eight separate shipments from Belgium to the Philippines, the first shipment arriving in 1888.Belgian engineers supervised the assembly of the church, the first column of which was erected on September 11, 1890.The walls were filled with mixed sand, gravel and cement.The stained glass windows were imported from the Henri Oidtmann Company, a German stained glass firm, while local artisans assisted in applying the finishing touches of the steel church.

The church was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII on June 24, 1890.Upon its completion the following year, on August 16, 1891, Basilica Minore de San Sebastián was consecrated by the Archbishop of Manila, Bernardo Nozaleda.

Sobrang saya noong napasok ang loob ng simbahan ito dahil isa naman itong fulfullment sa akin, bakit simple lang naman dahil isa to sa mga nasa bucketlist ko (soon i will blog about my 100 list).

At syempre habang nasa loob ako ng simbahang ito, nagdasal ako at nagpasalamat sa lahat ng masaya at blessing na nagaganap sa akin.
