There are two different “edits” in OnTime for defects, features, tasks, and incidents. The first is editing something based on the project that it’s in. The second is editing something based on the workflow step that it’s in. These are two different ways of seeing the item. This week we walk through the process of using field templates two different ways.

Hello and welcome to the Axosoft Support and Training blog! If you haven’t had a chance to meet us yet, we’re the ones in charge of making sure you know how to use all the features in OnTime and we’re also here to help you if you ever have any questions.

My name is Sean and I’ll be your humble host for the time being, I’m both a support engineer and trainer here at Axosoft, but this blog isn’t about me, this blog is about our community here on Axosoft.com. We’d like this space to be mostly about teaching you how to get the most out of OnTime in new and innovative ways. I’d also like to use these posts to tell you about cool new features we're baking into upcoming releases. Lastly, we’re looking to see some feedback from you folks, both in the comments below and on the forums. I’ll be periodically opening threads in the forums for different discussions and I’d be downright flattered to see you there.

img tags with empty src attributes

Is this thing on? Wow, I forget about this from time to time. :)

While working on our latest version of OnTime (v9.1, coming soon to a website near you), I ran into an interesting bug in OnTime web. If you had the attachments tab selected, and selected an item, 2 identical requests would get issued to a page called "ControlHandler.aspx", which handles all of our detail tab pages (for thinks like attachments, email messages, and history). I wasn't sure where this was coming from, so I poked around a bit. It turns out that having an <img /> tag on a page with an empty src attribute (like so: <img src="" />) causes that image tag to point to the containing page, causing the entire page to get requested again (causing any code-behind you have to get executed again), but the response just gets thrown away, since the img tag is only expecting an image back from the server, not an HTML document.

The way around this is to remove the src attribute altogether, you can still set the image source through javascript.

You can see an example of this, here (with the empty src attribute) and here (with the src attribute removed). Make sure you have fiddler turned on and refresh your cache to see what I'm talking about.

Creating an RSS feed that lists certain defects, features, tasks, or incidents from your database is easy to set up. Just activate a couple settings in customer portal and you'll be rolling! OnTime allows you to integrate bugs and features with your Source Control Management solution, such as Sourcesafe or Perforce. This week we walk through an example of setting up your SCM tab to work with the Subversion SCM tool.
