We all have our beauty staples that we can't live without- some we use often, some we wear on occasion. Unfortunately, a lot of women are unaware of the fact that makeup DOES expire! Here is your beauty expiration guide:

Foundation: Specifically liquid foundations (powder foundations do not collect bacteria). These should be replaced after 6-12 months of use. Most are water based, some are oil based- making them bacteria magnets! Using a bacteria- infected foundation can cause breakouts and inflammation. I suggest using a foundation with a pump or a squeeze tube and storing it away from heat and bathrooms.

Concealer: They should last about a year. When the colors start to turn, that's when you know it's time to toss it. Continuing use can result in breakouts.

Face Powders and Blush: These babies can last up to two years before needing to replace them! The reason being is that powders contain a tiny amount of, if any, water so there is less of a chance of bacteria growth. Another indication of expiration is when your powders are too hard to pick up on the brush.

Mascara and Eyeliner: Mascara is the fastest product to expire; it should be replaced every 3-4 months. Every time you coat your lashes, dip the brush back in the tube, and coat again you are contaminating the tube with bacteria. Bacteria will grow in the closed off environment and will put you at risk for an eye infection! Eyeliner also has a shelf life of 3-4 months due to application around the mucous membrane. Pencils tend to last longer than liquids if you remember to keep sharpening them!

Eye Shadows: They have a surprisingly short shelf life, again due to application around the mucous membrane- about 5-6 months.

Lipstick and Gloss: Another shocker- they last up to about a year! They contain no water so they do not collect as much bacteria as expected. Since lip products are repeatedly exposed to the mouth area, toss them after about a year (especially if you've been sick).

Tools: Most tools will last YEARS if you take proper care of them. I recommend deep cleaning them every two weeks. When brushes aren't cleaned, they breed tones of bacteria and can cause breakouts. Spray alcohol on tweezers, lash curlers, or any other tools (not brushes!) to kill bacteria every few months.

How to Clean Your Make-Up Brushes

Although a number of brush cleaners are available in the cosmetic industry, tough economic times demand even a beauty junkie to be resourceful and practical. For sanitary purposes, it is advisable to clean your make-up brushes AT LEAST once a week. If you are not a make-up artist, you do not need to have an on-the-go make-up cleaners that are usually in spray form. They need them to clean their on-hand brushes from one person to another. If you own your own brushes and nobody else is sharing them, you may want to consider the following:

1. Baby Shampoo. Because baby shampoos are so mild and gentle, they are perfect for cleaning your cosmetic brushes. They are free from harmful chemicals that could deteriorate the quality of the brush strands. Wash them like how you would normally wash your hair and let them dry by laying them down on a flat surface with paper towel or wash cloth that would absorb all the water residue. Notice that the shape of the brushes' bristles will follow its form when it was wet so make sure that the ends are properly formed to its function--may it me pointed or domed on the ends. Avoid drying the brush by standing them up for it could cause the water to flow through the ferrel--which is the part that holds the bristles together. If this happens, it may cause loose binding and shedding.

2. Facial Wipes/ Baby Wipes. These have cleaning properties incorporated in them so you can just brush the bristles back and forth until the make-up residue is taken off. This is very convenient if you do not have all the time to wash and dry the brushes with water. The bristles may still be wet after this procedure but it takes a lot less time and effort-- make sure though that they are dry before using.

3. Gentle Facial Cleanser. Works like shampoo and is a great alternative if you are looking for a product that has cleaning but moisturizing properties. Make sure that you rinse it really well and choose the ones that don't have too many harsh chemicals. You want to protect your brushes the way you care for your face--because the cleaner and the gentler the brushes are, the less irritated your face would be and as a result--zero breakouts!

If you are being extra hygienic on your brushes, you might want to try this simple home remedy:

Vinegar and Water: Use 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar, dip your brushes in the mixtures and rinse clean in warm water. This will disinfect your brushes especially if multiple people use them.

Not only should you wash your brushes as often as possible because of bacteria build-up--you would notice that the brushes are just unable to perform well enough in blending the make-up on your face if there is too much product build-up on the bristles. Blend, blend, blend with clean brushes and the results would be absolutely amazing within a few strokes.

Provides medium to full coverage depending on how much you layer it on your skin. Has huge variety of shades for every skin tone, and unique formula for dry or oily/combination skin. It is best applied using your bare fingers if you want fast and even blending. Wedge sponge is also a good applicator for this product, however; you may have a little bit of a difficulty using a foundation brush or stippling brush because again, it dries pretty fast. Offers full coverage of all imperfections and available in a variety of colours. Easier to be applied with a foundation or stippling brush, but of course, your fingers are always the best make-up tool to blend any foundation in. It comes in a 30 ML tube--very convenient to carry on because the product is controlled by pinching the amount out of a small opening. Easy to use and reasonably priced. Available in all drugstores and supermarkets.

NATURAL LOOKING MAKE-UP

3. Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation. Has a velvety feel that glides on smoothly on the skin once blended on thoroughly. Offers light to medium coverage that looks very natural. It would not completely hide your dark under eyes circles or your blemishes but what you'll get is a natural-looking even skin. It would not last all day but this is something that you wanna quickly apply on your skin in 30 seconds flat if you're just going to school or to the grocery store. Recommended for achieving a low-maintainance but fresh-looking make-up. It comes in a wide selection of shades and has 18 grams of product in a glass-twist container. Available in all drug stores and supermarkets.

4. Revlon Photo Ready Make-up Foundation. It comes in a liquid form that has light diffusing properties meant especially for taking flawless-looking make-up on photos. It aims to provide airbrushed finish that is good in any light. It offers medium to complete coverage depending on how many times you want to layer the product on. Set with powder to prevent it from melting down the rest of the day. Relatively long-lasting, good for parties that require a lot of taking good pictures. You must choose the colour wisely for it is kind of difficult to find the right shade with their selection. Oil free and fragrance free so it safe for those who have sensitive skin. A total of 30 ML in a bottle with a pump that is very convenient and economical.

All in all, I would suggest using a primer after applying a moisturizer and before applying the foundation. Your best bet for a reliable, non-greasy primer that is inexpensive but works magic is the -Hard Candy Sheer Envy Primer. Has an ultra light formula that glides super smoothly that creates a matte matrix on your skin to prepare for over-all make-up application. Prevents the skin from getting slick and oily--holds the make-up together to last for hours and hours without budge. It is less than $10.00 and available at most drugstores and supermarkets--especially at Walmart. :)

I am not a dermatologist but I have gone through years of insecurities because of acne which definitely crushed my self-esteem for quite a long time. Yes, I still do experience occasional breakouts here and there once in a while but my face had definitely cleared up and I want to share a few little “secrets”in achieving a clear and radiant-looking skin.

I believe that everything starts from the basics—proper diet, hygiene, exercise and good lifestyle choices. Here are my top 10 tips to start incorporating healthy everyday choices that would greatly affect the entire appearance of your skin.

1. Drink lots of water. Six to eight glasses a day is ideal. You most probably already know that—but do you actually do it? Just try a day drinking lots of water and no sodas or any unhealthy drinks and I promise you that you would feel a whole lot better--- your skin will actually start to have more elasticity and radiance.

2. Avoid eating foods that are too oily—especially the deep fried ones. Not only are they a lot fattening but they could cause your skin to get greasy—something that could eventually cause pimples because your skin gets prone to easily absorb dirt; therefore, welcoming bacteria build-up.

3. Eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Nuts like almonds and peanuts are rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants. Greens like broccoli and snap peas can be delicious snacks you can munch on in between meals that are packed with nutrients. Milk every night or green tea every after meal are good and healthy diet choices. Just make sure that you are conscious of each and every food or drink that you incorporate in your body. Multivitamins that you could get over the counter would ensure that you are getting all the proper vitamins that your body needs in order to stay healthy.

4. If you pair the right diet with exercise or any enjoyable physical activity that works up every part of your body, your skin will be in perfect condition and it will rid of all the toxins that can cause irregularities in your body functioning. It could be as simple as biking or walking to the closest park rather than using your car all the time. You don't need to go to the gym, just everyday basic activities that require physical strength that you enjoy can help you get comfortable with your own skin.

5. Always maintain a good hygiene. Towels or facial cloths have to be washed every so often. I personally do not wipe my face with a towel but I use a tissue paper to wipe off my wet face because it is very sensitive. Pillow cases have to be changed as often as possible for it can also be one of the breeding grounds of bacteria if they are not cleaned for a very long time. Same thing applies with make-up and tools. Face brushes should be washed AT LEAST once a week and sponges should be gotten rid off if it's too dirty even to be washed. Toss out the old mascaras after three months. Chuck the powders or liquid/ cream foundations you have never used FOR YEARS---chances are: you will never use them again anyways because you know too well that-- that is unsanitary.

6. Don't smoke. Period. Not at all. Occasional smokers are still smokers and I am pretty sure that you have heard of the fact that it could speed up your aging process that could cause bad skin including wrinkles even at a relatively young age.

7. Don't over-clean your face at any given circumstance. Avoid stripping down the natural oils of the face because of too many chemicals that cleanse your skin. Too much of anything is a bad thing. Cleanse, tone and moisturize with the right amount of products. That's all you really need.

8. Get enough sleep every night. Sleep deprivation makes your skin look dull and tired. You need to give your skin some time to rejuvenate at its own pace. If your whole body is rested, your skin radiates the condition of your physical state.

9. If you know that your skin is sensitive, do not... and I repeat... DO NOT keep touching your face at any cost. Every contact of your not-so-clean hands could irritate your sensitive skin that can lead to instant redness or bumps.. or full-blown breakouts.

10. Avoid masking your face with too much make-up. Clogging it up with layers and layers of unnecessary powder or foundation after you have gone through a long, sweaty, hot day outside where it had been exposed to dirt and polluted air could cause bacteria build-up. Use make-up only where you need it and apply sparingly to achieve a flawless, natural look. Oil control sheets are effective in getting rid of excess oil without layering or touching up your face with powder.
