Ramon Diaz was sacked as America coach today

The President of America, Michel Bauer, gave the press conference at the club's facilities in Coapa, that ended with Ramon Diaz removed from the coach's job. The reason given by Bauer was unfavorable results so far in the Clausura 2009 tournament of which four games have been played, with America winning and drawing once and losing twice.

Pachuca always seem to do well in Estadio Azteca, yesterday was no exception as they defeated America 3-1. America remain with 4 points in fifth place of Group 2, with Chivas leasing the way and Mexico City rivals Pumas and Cruz Azul ahead of Las Aguilas also, in the so called 'Group of Death'.

A smal crowd of 35,000 were on hand to administer calls for Ramon Diaz to return to Argentina, as the pressure on El Pelado increases following a second successive defeat.

Week one and win one for America and some much needed relief for Directo Tecnico Ramon Diaz. Two goals from Salvador Cabañas (who else) restored azulcrema pride and got the Clausura 2009 off to a winning beginning.

Juan Pablo Rodríguez gave the Torreón club a 1-0 lead just before the interval with a controversial penalty awarded against Ángel Reyna, Rodríguez using the frame of the goal to beat Memo Ochoa in goal. Cabañas equalised in the 63rd minute before doubling his tally in the game with ten minutes remaining, to the obvious delight of El Pelado, Ramon Diaz.

America and the Chicago Fire of MLS today announced an agreement to play two friendly games, one at Toyota Park in Chicago and the other at the Azteca Stadium. The dates have the games have not been decided yet. Dave Greeley, President of the Chicago Fire spoke of the agreement between both clubs and is hoping to align the Fire more closely with America, "Cuauhtémoc Blanco is the catalyst that unites these two important clubs and makes these two games interesting, hopefully we can follow these games with more collaborations between the Chicago Fire and Club America in the future. Cuauhtémoc Blanco added that the games will be "a great party that the fans will enjoy very much". Michel Bauer, President of Las Aguilas, assured the Fire that America is interested in continuing a relationship after the games are over, "We hope that this relationship goes beyond these two games. Club America is committed to work with the Chicago Fire to provide a great football spectacle to the fans. The meeting of the two clubs Presidents was closed with the exchange of soccer jerseys, Chicago Fire jerseys, for Michel Bauer and Guillermo Ochoa, America's star goalkeeper and current captain. America gave a special jersey to Cuauhtémoc Blanco with number 34 on it. Cuauhtémoc will celebrate
his 34th birthday next saturday.

Diaz Under Pressure

America returned to the Distrito Federal yesterday amid booing from supporters at the Benito Juárez International Airport, disappointed over the club's elimination from the InterLiga and resulting failure to qualify for the 2009 Copa Libertadores tournament. Most of the anger was directed towards manager Ramon Diaz who was heckled by fans as he took questions from waiting media. At one point a fan put his hand on the shoulder of Diaz and said "If you have any dignity you will leave the club". Diaz remained unmoved, as he outlined a smile and left the airport.

Minutes before, Diaz refused to say that he had received an ultimatum from the club Directors, only saying that he remains dedicated to the work required to repair the damage suffered in the United States. "You would have to ask the Directors that question. We want to regain composure, , we have a competitive team, we did not want to be eliminated. America is a great team, and the aim is to win the league Championship", said the Argentinean coach.

America forward Robert de Pinho belives with time that the new additions to America will acomplish the fans expectations. The Brazilian spoke to reporters after returning to Mexico City from Los Angeles, where America were eliminated from the 2009 InterLiga tournament by Atlas, De Pinho added "I believe that in spite of the elimination the team played very well, and we must be calm and begin to work together. We know that the pressure exists, but going forward trhere will be a lot to look forward to with this team".

On the defaet to Atlas and elimination from InterLiga De Pinho responded "It is not a failure, the players have just arrived and we are learning how to play together, against Atlas we just stopped creating, but credit to Atlas, they deserved the victory".

A disastrous result that sees America eliminated from InterLiga and lose the opportunity of participating in the 2009 Copa Libertadores.

Atlas simply hustled America out of the game, were quicker to the ball all the time and deserved the victory. Did America take Atlas lightly in a game we expected to win ? it certainly appeared that way. Maybe the players are not all on the same page yet, who knows ... after the game Michel Bauer, President of America, was asked if this latest setback to America would put coach Ramon Diaz position in question if results in the upcoming Clausura 2009 tournament were not satisfactory. Mr. Bauer replied that everyone's, including his own, position was not guaranteed if results do not improve.

America's players did not take any media duties after the game, only new signing Fernado Ortiz, who did not play due to injury, talked with reporters ... "We are not robots, we are human beings, we all had the intention to get a result here and the way we lost hurts, it's an experience we must learn from and we must not repeat the mistakes of today's game".

Alfredo Tena played his entire career for Club America from his debut in 1973 untill 1991. Known affectionately as Capitán Furia to the fans Alfredo came to symbolise Club America throughout the 1980's. A rock in the center of defence Tena captained the club for many years and was later to coach the club from 1999-2000.

Making his debut during the 1973-74 during a game versus Mexico City rivals Cruz Azul, Alfredo had came up through the Club América youth system. Soon after, Tena secured a regular spot in Las Águilas defence. During his illustrious career at Club América, Tena won a number a titles. During the 1980s, América won six league titles. Tena also won the Mexican League Champions' Cup trophies after the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons, as well as achieving international success with the club by winning two CONCACAF Champions' Cup titles in 1978 and 1987 and an Interamericana Cup in 1978.

After retirement, Tena decided to pursue success from the bench, as a coach. In 1996, he took a job at Santos Laguna, leading them to a title during the Invierno 1996 season. Tena remained at the helm of the Torreón based club until his dismissal in 1998, never being able to duplicate the success of his lone title two years prior. After short stints coaching Puebla F.C. and his beloved Club América, Tena once again tasted success at the head of C.F. Pachuca, winning the league after the Invierno 2001 season. After leaving Pachuca in 2003, he returned to Club América, this time as an assistant to his brother Luis Fernando Tena. Currently, he is head of Club América's reserve teams.

According to our poll 72% of voters believe the answer was yes, 26% of the voters want Cuauhtemoc and Piojo Lopez back as well. I personally think it's a good idea having Pável Pardo back, it's just the length of the conract, 3 years, that troubles me the most. We all know, barring injury, that he will greatly contribute to the Clausura 2009 campaign - it's what happens two years from now. Who knows, maybe he'll end up in Aguascalientes like everyone else !

Cuauhtemoc to return to Chicago Fire

The Chicago Fire and the legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco are closing in on a deal that would bring the man from Tepito back to Chicago for a third succesive season, according to Luis Arroyave from the Chicago Tribune. Only Blanco's signature is required to finalise the deal.

Cuauhtemoc was loaned out to Santos Laguna at the end of the 2008 MLS season and was a prime mover in Los Guerreros run to the Apertura 2008 semi-finals where they just lost out to eventual champion Toluca.

A crowd of 30,729 were in attendance at Houston's Robertson Stadium last night to witness America's first game of 2009. After the 17 million dollar injection of cash there had to be some improvement. And there clearly was, as America started brightly and then continued with cautious thoughtful play. The heralded return of Pavel Pardo never materialised, held back by red tape that Pavel must untie in Germany before he can return to America and hopefully partake in the third InterLiga game.

Memo Ochoa at full stretch

So a new America group, only Memo Ochoa, Salvador Cabanas, Alejandro Arguello, Enrique Vera and Woody Sanchez remain from the prveious team had to get to know each other pretty quickly as they were up against a Chivas side eager to impress there Texas fan base. America took the lead in the 36th minute after Jean Beausejour, drilled a low shot across the face of the goal into the bottom right corner of Luis Michel's goal. Chivas reacted with a great deal of spirit and probably had the better of possesion and ideas from thereafter, but did not equalize until the 56th minute with a slice of fortune after a cross from Ponce somehow was deflected onto the back of Enrique Vera's neck and ended up beating Ochoa.

Memo Ochoa is confident that the new round of changes in Coapa will soon come good, and come good soon. There is no option for any other scenario. There has been little time for the new players to get to know each other and adopt the system of play mapped out by head coach Ramon Diaz. This can work two ways, as the new Aguilas are an unknown force stacked with players of the highest quality which can place doubt in the opponents mind, or it can go against America as the new players are unfamiliar with each other.

What happens in InterLiga remains to be seen, but the fact is that America must obtain a ticket to this years Copa Libertadores. Ochoa hopes in the future that America will have a direct ticket to the Libertadores and to not have to play in InterLiga at all, by winning another League Championship.
