Somehow Memorial Day gets lost in the shuffle of warm-weather holidays. It’s so important to pause and remember all the incredible sacrifices that the men and women of the armed forces have made for us. Thinking about it makes me feel so proud to be an American! Another fabulous American ideal is frugality. This Patriotic Banner Project uses up old fabric and jeans… plus you can pull it out again for the Fourth of July.

Supplies: Denim jeans you’d like to upcycle, canvas fabric, red and navy ticking fabric (although you can use whatever!), Fabric/T-Shirt Transfer Paper, sewing machine or hand needle and thread, Fabri-Tac (glue), wide bias tape, embroidery thread, random embellishments like buttons or fabric scraps, pinking shears (optional) or scissors and an iron.

Grab some patriotic graphics from Piddix (what I used here) or find similar free images at The Graphics Fairy.

Directions:

1. Make yourself a triangle template out of cardstock (mine is 5″ by 8″ by 8″). Cut 6 triangles out of the jeans, 6 out of the red ticking and 6 from the navy ticking.

2. Sew your triangles into pennants. Use a 1/2″  border around the two long sides. If you using a sewing machine– when you get to the edge of the pennant, to make a angle, leave your needle in, lift the foot, and pivot the fabric.

3. Choose and download your graphics and print on the T-Shirt Transfer paper (follow package instructions). Cut the individual images out before transferring them to canvas fabric.

4. Cut images out with pinking shears and decided where to put them. Embellish with buttons, fabric scraps… whatever you have.

5. Go over the pennants with Fabri-Tac in hand to secure any loose spots.

6. Sew pennants to bias tape (or you can use Fabri-Tac to glue)… and there you have it– a Patriotic Banner for Memorial Day and Fourth of July.

Not afraid of trying things out the second time around, former Real Housewives of New York star Kelly Bensimon, has officially stepped back into the dating scene. Kelly would like to marry again,” a source told UsMagazine.com. Taking heed to her daughters’ advice, she stepped out to dinner with Good Morning America anchor Josh Elliot April 27. Though they appeared to hit it off over dinner, a source close to Elliot, 40, explains that their outing was a one-time thing and that the pair are not “dating.” The two met on set while she was promoting her new diet book, I Can Make You Hot.

Breakups can be tough, and sometimes it can be even more difficult to jump back into the dating pool. But, how do you know when it’s time to dive back in after calling it quits with your former flame? Cupid has some signs that it’s time to get out:

1. You’re feeling lonely: Your ex no longer considers you a factor in their life and your friends barely know who you are anymore since you’ve secluded yourself in your bedroom listening to Beyonce’s “Me, Myself and I” on repeat. An excited six-months-pregnant Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi officially announced this week that she and fiancé, Jionni LaValle, will be having a baby boy, according to UsMagazine.com. The Jersey Shore star was thrilled to share her good news, having said in the past, “If it’s a boy, I would dress him like Pauly D.” The newly engaged couple have a lot to look forward to between marriage and parenthood. Choosing not to live in the Jersey Shore house for Season 6, is one of many preparations they will have to make before their first child, and youngest guido-to-be, arrives.

How do you prepare for having a son versus a daughter?

Whether or not a couple chooses to know the gender of their unborn child is entirely up to them. Some prefer the surprise, while most of the time, people find it easier to prepare for the baby if they know they are expecting a boy or girl. If the doctor tells you those fateful words, “It’s a boy,” here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Blue, blue, blue: You may or may not have been secretly envisioning pretty pink bows and dresses, but tuck those ideas away for the meantime and get ready to see a lot of blue. Luckily, there are plenty of other boy-friendly colors, such as green, yellow, and gray, but those bright pinks and purples are probably out for now.

2. Barbie won’t make the cut: You may still have your doll house from when you were a little girl, but unfortunately that’s probably not going to be of much interest to a growing baby boy. Toys are relatively universal up to the first year or two, but after that, anything that has wheels or goes fast will be in your son’s hands at all times.

3. Father-son bonding: The relationship between father and son is certainly a special one. Every man fantasizes of their first catch together or teaching his little guy to ride a bike. Boys will always be boys, but don’t feel like you can’t join in on the fun. The rough facade won’t be on all the time, and your son will need and want his mommy time just as much.

Almost exactly 8 years ago, I left the Ivory Tower. That’s two units of four, for those of you who are counting. I was not a happy camper back in 2004. In fact, I was nearly an entirely different person from who I am now. I had two Masters degrees but having spent 6 months applying to jobs with dedication and passion, I had not even been called for an interview. I was way overweight. I had been rather battered and bruised by my graduate school experience (that’s a story for another time). I was moving back home, which I felt wretched about. And on top of all of that, I couldn’t drive.

See, when I was 16 I wanted to learn how to drive just like every teenager does, but I knew that I would need special accommodations, assuming that seeing over the windshield was important. I called a driving school and asked if they’d be able to help someone like me and I got the curt response, “Well, we have some phonebooks.” Being 16, I took this as a ravaging insult that cut deep into my poor coal black heart, so I gave up for awhile. Then I came to the conclusion that I’d need to buy a car to have it adjusted, and lord knows I didn’t have enough money for either of those things. I was 25 and still had not cracked this nut. And now I was unemployed, unhealthy, living at home, and my college loans were coming due. It was not a happy time.

And then came Wally.

My mom scoured the phonebook (yeah…those things) looking for driving instructors that catered to the “not exactly normal” driver. I decided to call Wally. He came by to pick me up at my parents’ house. He had a red Pontiac and had all sorts of stuff in the trunk of the car – pedal extenders, pillows, books – anything a special needs driver could use. I told him I was not really comfortable with anything except parking lot driving, so he said, “Ok, we’ll go to a parking lot.” After a few laps of me driving in circles, he said, “OK, now I want you to drive home.”

Boy was I scared out of my mind. But somehow, Wally was like a fear sponge. He never EVER lost his calm, even when I came close to plowing into cars. And he perpetually picked on me, as I got better. “Oh, you sure you don’t want to just go back to the parking lot?”

After about 4 months of endless driving around orange cones, driving down streets, not understanding how to do left-hand turns, and all kinds of other torturous stuff, I passed both parts of my driving test and got my license. I could drive. I could leave one place and go to another, and I could do that whenever I wanted. Well, within reason. I had my freedom. I felt like an adult. I felt more normal. It was the beginning of a new beginning.

In a lot of ways, even though not driving is not technically life threatening, Wally saved my life. He gave me a bright shining light of possibility when there wasn’t a whole lot of that going around. Every time I drive, even now, I think about that man and what he did for me. And I think about the fact that I was just one of his many, many students. I wonder how many other people feel the same way about him that I do.

Wally taught me that there are lots of ways to save a person’s life. It’s not always sudden and super dramatic. Sometimes it’s four months driving around cones in the parking lot of an abandoned ghetto grocery store in an un-air-conditioned car in the middle of the summer. Maybe it’s something entirely different but equally unexpected.

Wally taught me to drive, but he also taught me that there are ways around every obstacle. I never thought I’d be able to drive.

What do you think you can never do? Whatever it is, you’re wrong – it can be done. It might stink working towards it. You might wanna quit a lot of times, and you might even have to pay a lot of money for it. But it can be done. And that person or those people who help you – they’ll look like lifesavers to you, even if the situation didn’t seem life threatening at the time.

And you’ll wonder, as I am wondering these days, how you could ever be so lucky and how you could ever show the depth of your gratitude.

Everyone needs a Wally. I hope you find yours.

Former American Idol Kelly Clarkson told UsMagazine.com that she’s incredibly pleased with her relationship with talent manager Brandon Blackstock. “I’m too happy!” she said. “He’s ruining my creativity!” Clarkson may be known for her unlucky love life and sad songs like “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” but she says that her feelings for Blackstock are keeping her from writing other breakup melodies. As Clarkson said, “It’s an awesome problem to have.”

It’s easy to be head-over-heels in a new relationship, especially if it’s been a long time since you last dated someone. However, keeping your relationship grounded makes it last longer. If your relationship has any of these signs, it might be time to take a step back into reality:

1. You stop wanting to see other people: It’s always great to spend a lot of time with your partner, but it’s important to maintain your own personal friendships. If you find that you don’t want to see or hang out with anyone else, your relationship might just be too strong to last.

2. You lose interest in things you used to enjoy: Your interests and talents are important parts of who you are. If you feel like these are being stifled by your partner, it’s possible that you’ve gotten too close for comfort. Make sure to take time out for yourself once in a while.

Though engagement has increased, an Arbitron and Edison Research study found that still only 8% of US consumers had a profile on Google+. When it comes to dating, is virginity desirable?

The media is tingling with excitement over an interview Olympic hopeful Lori “Lolo” Jones recently did on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. In the conversation with Mary Carillo, Jones reveals that, “Being a virgin is harder than training for the Olympics.”

Oh, by the way, Jones is 29 years old and an amazing athlete. The track and field superstar focuses on the 60 and 100 meter hurdles and is hoping to compete in the 2012 London Olympics. Jones was expected to win the 100 Meter Hurdles in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but finished a disappointing seventh.

She’s also a devout Christian and staunch supporter of just saying NO… to premarital sex.

While some famous folks might have kept their private life (or lack thereof)… private, Jones has taken to Twitter to share with her followers the (ahem) ups and downs of being a 29-year-old virgin.

Very connected with her nearly 75,000 followers, Jones first shared her virgin “status” with them earlier this year. But that’s not all.

As to what kind of guy she’s waiting for… on March 14th, Jones tweeted “Single, Christian, non smoker, no kids with any baby mamas, have a job.” Sounds pretty reasonable!

Virgin or not, the gorgeous and talented Jones might be as confused about relationships as the rest of us. Along with the occasional bible reference, retweets and general “Lolo” news, on April 24th she tweeted, “I just called my ex boyfriend 50 times (back to back) because, let’s face it, for the next 24 hours, my crazy still can’t top Pilar Sanders.”

And April 26th, “If a guy doesn’t return my call, I get mad they give NO reason but if twitter ppl tell me WHY they unfollow me, I get mad they do.”

In the Real Sports interview, Jones even quips about her virginity, saying she’d be a good candiate for the sequel of  Steve Carrell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin, “‘I’m a little bit awkward like Steve Carell,” she confided. “I could definitely play that role. I would love to.”

Stuffin' Muffins

10 servings
209 calories per serving

1/4 c butter
3/4 c celery, chopped fine
1/4 c carrots, chopped fine
1 1/2 c water
6 oz. Stovetop stuffing mix
1/3 c Craisins or raisins
1/4 c chopped walnuts
1 1/2 c low fat shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup egg beaters
Pam

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray muffin tin with Pam. In a skillet, melt butter and cook celery and carrot 5-6 minutes. Add water and bring to a boil them remove from heat and stir in stuffing mix, craisins and nuts then add 1 cup of cheese and the egg beaters and mix well. Spoon into 10 muffin cups and sprinkle with the rest of the cheese then back 10 minutes to melt cheese.

1. Challenging, continually changing work

As ultrasound equipment becomes more accurate and complex, sonographers need to learn more about their tools than ever before, but this creates a challenging work environment that many sonographers appreciate. New equipment like 3D ultrasound machines require a careful eye and a solid understanding of the machines’ capabilities, and talented ultrasound technicians rarely handle the same day-to-day responsibilities.

2. A reliable job outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the United States will see about a 44 percent growth in medical technology jobs over the next decade. The BLS rates this growth as “much faster than average” and notes that sonography is gaining popularity due to the advantages it offers over invasive diagnostic procedures.

Ultrasound technicians can generally find employment in any major city, and because many private practices have invested in ultrasound machines over the last several years, technicians’ employment opportunities are no longer confined to large urban areas. Ultrasound specialists have even more opportunities, as they can work in either specialist offices or general health care facilities.

3. Good pay

The BLS reports that the media pay for diagnostic medical sonographers was $64,380 in 2010. Pay varies depending on the sonographer’s location and specializations, but because the occupation requires only an associate’s degree and certification, it offers a great return on educational investment.

Diagnostic medical sonographers often have rich, fulfilling careers with somewhat flexible hours and good incomes, so if you have an interest in medicine and good communication skills, the career path is certainly worth your consideration.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can block airways during sleep, leading to obstructive sleep apnea. People who suffer from sleep apnea have problems breathing while they sleep, often holding their breath for 30 to 40 seconds or even choking or gasping for air during sleep. This difficulty breathing can increase blood pressure and decrease heart rate, as well as contribute to other long-term health problems. In children, some of these problems include increased bedwetting, slowed growth, and a larger possibility of behavior problems.

Removing the child’s tonsils and adenoids, also called an adenotonsillectomy, can help eliminate the problems associated with blocked airways and improve a child’s sleep patterns. Researches from Louisiana State University reviewed studies of children suffering from sleep apnea, about a third of who also had problems wetting the bed. After these children had their tonsils removed, about 16 percent still had issues wetting the bed, leading researchers to believe there is some relationship between nighttime bedwetting and sleep apnea, with the rate of bedwetting falling significantly once the children have their tonsils removed.

Other Forms of Sleep Apnea Treatment

Removing tonsils isn’t the only way to treat sleep apnea. Another common form of treatment is using a CPAP machine to ensure there is continuous positive airway pressure in those suffering from sleep apnea. The CPAP machine supplies a steady stream of airway pressure through a mask or nose piece. This increased air pressure ensures the airway won’t collapse during sleep, but some people find the nose piece or mask difficult to adjust to at first.

For people looking for an alternative to the CPAP machine, there is another airway pressure device that automatically adjusts the air pressure while a person sleeps. This form of treatment, often called bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP) provides less pressure when exhaling and more pressure when inhaling. Dentistry offices often have oral appliances to wear while sleeping that can reduce the effects of sleep apnea. Patients should visit the dentists once every six months for sleep apnea treatment follow-ups to ensure these appliances are working correctly and are relieving the signs and symptoms.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the latest team to recognize and cater to their social media fans. At their first-ever “Social Media Night” the team is offering $10 outfield box tickets to fans that follow the team on Twitter or “like” them on Facebook. These participants are also invited to attend a pre-game reception, at which the Pirates’ pre-game radio show will be broadcasting live. There will be special appearances by selected Pirates executives and the team’s announcers as well as prizes and giveaways will be raffled off throughout the event and there will be autograph opportunities.

The main prize is that one of the event’s participants will be chosen as the “Fan Of the Game”. The winner will be recognized during a pre-game ceremony on the field. The “Fan of the Game” will also be able to change a base with the PNC Park grounds crew during the third inning.

This kind of fan engagement has gone from recommended to completely necessary with the huge shift in attention that baseball and sports fans in general have given to the social media space. Social media offers an inexpensive service that can provide the team with invaluable and timely feedback and potentially create new fans for life.

The Pirates are also enticing people who follow their social media accounts with small discounts, offering the team long-term value at a very small cost. Often times, there isn’t even a cost. According to ESPN the Pirates are 25^th in attendance this season and only selling 58.9% of their tickets. Ticket giveaways are often tickets that likely wouldn’t have been sold at full price in the first place.

The team is able to create long-term benefits by engaging their online fans, who are more cognizant of what is going on with the team. It’s not only a means to provide offers but it also enables teams to proactively push their message much more directly to their fans instead of relying on fans to regularly visit their website to seek out the information.

Phillip Phillips was elated on Wednesday night when he was crowned this years winner of American Idol.

With a staggering 132 million votes cast, he shed tears of joy during a performance of his new single, “Home.”

After the show, the up-and-coming star told reporters:

“I wasn’t thinking about anything, not even the song. I wasn’t really wanting to sing or anything. I just started thinking about the whole journey and how far all of us have come, and how we’ve made it. It’s so overwhelming.”

Overcome with emotion, Phillips continued:

“I hate crying, but I’ll probably cry some more. It feels good at times.”

He should be proud, considering his stint on AI wasn’t so easy to get though. Yes, he put on a brave face during his performances, but Phillips had been battling kidney problems all along.

He missed some of the field production during the season, including the Ford Music videos. It was apparently too taxing on the folksy crooner who needed to rest between shows as much as possible.

Revealing he’ll be having surgery “soon”, the singer said on Live! with Kelly this morning:

“I’ve been sick this whole show. I’m trying to get all my work done, to recover.”

At one point in the season, he was even hospitalized for his condition. He added:

“It’s been tough. I’ve had a lot of great people around me, great doctors. That helps out a lot.”

Last night, he was not present during several of the guys’ performances. His absence was noticeable. For the final performance, he was sitting on a stool and his co-finalist, Jessica Sanchez (another star in the making), walked to him. It was evident he was not well. Congratulations to Phillip on his big win and, now, we wish him a quick recovery!

With her upcoming roll in Snow White and the Huntsman, it looks like Kristen Stewart is like the Disney Princess in more ways than one. Season 8′s Bachelorette Emily Maynard recently talked about her tough decision to send home hopeful bachelor, Joe, in her blog for People. 2. Don’t make the same mistake twice: If you notice something that your new lover does that ruined your relationship, talk to them and see if this is a problem that can be fixed. If not, it might be time to cut your losses. There’s nothing worse than repeating a bad relationship.

3. Accept that not everyone is your perfect match: Too many people cling to a relationship even when it isn’t working just for the sake of “seeing how things play out.” If it isn’t working now, chances are it won’t work in the long run. Why waste your time?

Half of Hollywood’s hottest pair, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, attended the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday. Pitt was there, and he took the time to discuss his recent engagement to his leading lady. According to People, Pitt said the engagement was “something that made sense.” Although the actor was in France to promote his new gangster movie, Killing Them Softly, he also put to rest a rumor that he and Jolie were planning to marry in August. Pitt concluded, “There is no date. We’re still hoping for marriage equality in the United States before we get married.” With that said, Hollywood may just have to wait a little longer for the Jolie-Pitt ‘I do’s.’

New or Used? Most of the time, a used car will be the best option. If you are running a very profitable business and can afford a brand new car, go for it. But even for individuals, a used car is generally the best option due to the depreciation of value that happens so quickly with cars. You tend to owe more than the car is worth as soon as you leave the lot. The trick with used vehicles is finding a quality car. Sometimes the best way to do this is to buy used rental vehicles from a reputable rental company like Hertz Car Sales. These cars tend to only be a couple of years old and have excellent maintenance records that are carefully documented by the company. You can often get a great deal since they have higher than average miles for their age.

Insurance. To lower insurance cost, focus on four-door sedans or other economy cars as much as possible. They tend to be cheaper to insure. Please do yourself a favor and get commercial car insurance for company cars. Yes, I know it may seem tempting and cheaper to sneak a commercial car or two onto your personal auto policy, but the headache that ensues when there is an accident isn’t worth the small amount you save. In addition, it’s always a good idea to keep your business expenses and personal expenses separate.

Gas Mileage. Most company cars are driven quite a lot. Spending a little up front to get a hybrid, electric, or high miles-per-gallon vehicle can really pay off in a company vehicle fleet. In addition, this will allow you to show that your company cares about the environment and positions you as forward-thinking, which is a win-win situation.

Driver Training for Employees. Most companies that have corporate vehicles have a qualification program before employees can drive the vehicle. Despite the upfront expense of a driver training program, you will save significant money in the long run if you implement one. Safe driving practices will lead to lower gas consumption from less speeding, fewer traffic violations, and fewer accidents. You will replace fewer vehicles and lower the risk of traffic lawsuits. In addition, a program like this can provide a discount on some commercial auto insurance policies.

I am a firm believer that we all need to be true to ourselves, who we are at our core. Only by being true to our core can we be our BEST selves.

In her four-part book, Susan Cain walks the reader through what she calls the historical change in the U.S. from a “culture of character to a culture of personality”; the “ideal” extrovert persona; the biological differences between introverts and extroverts; the role of nature vs. nurture; the role of free will; how introverts and extroverts think and act differently and why; when introverts should act more extroverted, and, in conclusion, encourages everyone to be true to themselves – to find their center.

She provides an introvert/extrovert assessment – the more trues the more of an introvert you are, the more falses, the more of an extrovert you are. If you have an equal number of true and false responses, then you are an “ambivert.”

I am an ambivert and found this book to be an easy read, insightful and thought-provoking.

Did you know that Dale Carnegie was an introvert? He grew up a farm boy, went into sales and became a public-speaking icon during the rise of the extrovert ideal.

Did you know that Dr. Seuss was an introvert? In fact, he rarely went out to meet children for fear that he would disappoint them with his reserved personality.

On Susan Cain’s website she has a manifesto. Below are a few statements worth pondering:

1. Solitude is a catalyst for innovation.
2. Everyone shines, given the right lighting. For some, it’s a Broadway spotlight, for others, a lamplit desk.
3. “Quiet Leadership” is not an oxymoron.

She has three calls to action:

1. To stop the madness of group work/group think.
2. To go to the wilderness more – unplug and get outside of our heads.
3. Look inside our suitcase (our personal bag of books) – what do we have in there, and why? Share more of what you have in your suitcase.

In conclusion, some thoughts:

Are we creating environments that have the right balance of group work, and brainstorming, as well as individual creativity and innovation? What do we need to do better on this front?

Do we make getting out of our heads a non-negotiable in our lives, making getting out in nature a priority to recharge?

Do we share what we are interested in? If not, why? Do we think others won’t be interested, or do we not make time for it?

Find your core, be true to it, don’t let the predominant culture dictate who you should be.

The players say that workers’ compensation is not enough to cover the long-term effects of their brain injuries. These cases promise to turn into big, ugly legal battles. They also raise some interesting questions about an employer’s responsibility to protect employees in the workplace.

Can an Employer Keep Secrets When It Comes to Safety?

The lawsuits will basically boil down to whether or not the league knew about the long-term health effects of concussions and intentionally kept that information from its players. Many professional athletes struggle with depression, dementia and other brain disorders after they retire.

If the NFL knew of the risks, as many former players now claim, it’s going to be harder for it to make the case that workers’ comp is all the players should get. The players’ attorneys will seek to prove that the league’s actions amounted to negligence, which put its athletes in greater danger than most workers normally face.

Is Workers’ Comp Insufficient in Some Cases?

With so many former players speaking up, it would be difficult for the NFL to argue that concussions don’t cause long-term health issues. The league is more likely to assert that its former players are bound by its collective bargaining agreement.

The collective bargaining agreement calls for injured athletes to seek financial assistance from such traditional methods as workers’ compensation, instead of litigation. But a growing number of retired players, including Mark Rypien, Tony Mandarich and Art Monk, say the league shouldn’t get off that easily. They claim the NFL should have taken strong preventative action to protect its players when it first discovered the debilitating conditions concussions can cause.

After former Chicago Bears star Dave Duerson committed suicide, medical tests confirmed that he had the degenerative brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Duerson’s family later filed a wrongful death complaint against the NFL.

When Has an Employer Done Enough?

Obviously, a professional football player understands that he could get hurt every time he runs through the locker room tunnel and onto the field. That’s why he wears a helmet, shoulder pads and other protective gear. This raises the question: Should the courts hold the league responsible for workplace injuries that are so difficult to prevent in a game that relies so heavily on physical contact?

It will be interesting to see how the NFL concussion cases play out. One other important factor in this case is that workers’ comp law varies by state, so the National Football League Players Association has appointed attorneys in every NFL market. This could make it more difficult for players to receive uniform workers’ comp coverage as each state has different laws.

Buffalo Meatballs

6 meatballs per serving
177 calories per serving

1 lb ground chicken
1/4 c Egg Beaters
1/2 c minced celery
1/2 c breadcrumbs
1/3 c Frank’s Buffalo Sauce (or your favorite brand)
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 t oregano
1/2 t garlic powder
1/2 t onion powder
Pam
2 T butter
2 T flour
1 c chicken or beef stock
1/4 c Frank’s Buffalo Sauce (or your favorite brand)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix meat, egg beaters, breadcrumbs, 1/3 c sauce, salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder and onion powder. Spray a baking sheet with Pam. Make 36 small cocktail sized meatballs and place on a baking sheet with the sides all touching (this helps retain moisture in the meatballs as they cook). Bake 15-20 minutes or until done. While they are cooking melt butter in a small saucepan and then add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring the entire time. Add stock and simmer 3 minutes. Add 1/4 c buffalo sauce, salt and pepper and simmer 1 minute. Serve this sauce over the meatballs or on the side as a dipping sauce.

Add some celery and carrot stix and some low fat blue cheese dressing on the side. You won’t miss the mess of wings with this healthy option that is just as good!

Twenty years ago, smokers who wanted support while quitting had relatively few options. They could try to find a support group or smoking-cessation clinic in their area, but that was about it. The increased use of high technology has made an impact on everything from the humble camper van to the most lavish RV.  Even the most conventional of camper vans uses all sorts of high tech materials in their constriction nowadays, from Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) or carbon fibre body shells to amorphous technology solar panels incorporated in the roof.  The Verdier Westfalia takes being green to extremes with body panels made from wood to give a truly eco feel.

Part I looked at high tech camping vans for ordinary mortals.  Celebs have different and surprisingly varied tastes, but share a love of gadgetry.  Jamie Oliver is probably the highest profile home grown UK media favourite who used a camper for his book tour launch, but his fame and vehicle can’t compete with some of the more extravagant American celebrity adherents.  Vin Diesel has what can only be described as a mansion on wheels with a sunroof that automatically changes to suit the light levels.  Colin Farrell has a classic Airstream that he uses when he’s filming in the USA and Pamela Anderson had her motorhome fitted out with a vibrating bed and stripper pole.
High- tech goes bananas when you enter the realms of mobile palaces for the super rich.  Here it’s gizmos and gadgetry that dominate.  Aside from the obvious gold plated fittings, flat screen satellite TVs the size of the IMAX, lightning fast broadband, living, sleeping and dining accommodations that would make the Ritz seem like a tawdry Travelodge as standard, you can also get an extra set of wheels. For the oligarch who’s got everything (including the Champions League trophy) and is therefore convinced he can walk on water, there’s even a camper van that allows him to at least drive on it. It’s not until you enter unexplored country of the future that high-tec really takes a hold of some frankly weird, wonderful and often bold or outrageous design concepts that turn the idea of the camper van on its head.  Most campervans are usually bulky beasts based on existing commercial chassis and drive trains. Where Next?

What sparked interest in the camper van in the 1940s and 1950s is still why more people are turning to them now:  they are a cheaper alternative for a family holiday!  Post WWII GIs wanted cheap ways to vacation.  The growing interstate highway system offered a way to achieve that and cheap motorised RVs like the Winnebago offered them a way to get there.  As we’re immersed in more and more technology at home, so it seems logical that the camper vans and RVs we buy in the future will reflect that immersion in the modern high tech gadgets and gizmos we take for granted.  Why?  Because the reason people choose to buy camper vans remains as it always was:  you can stop right where you are but still be at home.
