Ieri m-am repezit cateva minute de-acasa pana la cladirea bisericii. Am deschis poarta cea mare a parcarii si m-am dus inauntru. Pe geam, am vazut cum o masina trage si ea in parcare si m-am gandit ca iar va trebui sa stau ca alta data dupa cine stie cine plecat cine stie unde dupa cine stie ce si ori n-am sa pot incuia parcarea la loc, ori va trebui sa incui masina inauntru si sa astept sa fiu iar chemat de acasa.

Ca sa nu se intample asa ceva, m-am dus repede sa-i spun ca nu poate lasa masina acolo decat cateva minute. Am stat langa masina o vreme pentru ca femeia dinauntru vorbea la celular si nici nu m-a bagat in seama. Pana la urma a lasat geamul jos si mi-a spus repezit: “Sti cine sunt eu? Sunt un “probation officer” (un ofiter de politie). Ce vrei? Vrei sa-ti arat legitimatia?”

Rautatea ei a trezit in mine rautatea mea si in loc sa-i mai spun ceea ce venisem sa-i spun, i-am replicat: “Asta nu va da dreptul sa parcati aici! Este o parcare privata. Va rog sa plecati.”

Am lasat-o acolo si m-am intors inapoi spre biroul biseriicii. In drum, am simtit ca am facut ceva necaracteristic si nepotrivit. M-am dus in birou, am luat o foarfeca si am taiat cel mai frumos trandafir din cei care ne impodobesc curtea. Curatandu-l de spini, m-am dus inapoi spre acea necaracteristica masina de politie. Am gasit-o pe doamna politai in picioare, langa masina, cu legitimatia intinsa spre ochii mei, ca sa ma impresioneze. Ocupat cu curatirea spinilor i-am spus doar: “Nu trebuie … N-am nevoie de ea …”

“Unde este numarul 326 pe strada asta?”, m-a intrebat rastit.

Am priceput ca-i este rusine sa recunoasca faptul ca se ratacise si am tacut o vreme, pana ce am terminat cu toti spinii, apoi i-am intins trandafirul spunandu-i: “Este pentru dumneavoastra. Ca sa va faca ziua mai frumoasa”.

Surprinsa, a zambit si odata cu asta a lasat jos si masca profesionala pe care o avea in dotare de la “institutie”.

Cand ne-am despartit, am plecat amandoi multumiti: eu ca descoperisem in ea femeia creata de Dumnezeu, ea cu impresia placuta ca se intalnise cu un “om al lui Dumnezeu”.

Era cat pe ce sa ratam fiecare aceasta intalnire …

Despite the varied theories espoused by many establishment economists, it was none other than the Federal Reserve that caused the Great Depression and the horrific suffering, deprivation and dislocation America and the world experienced in its wake. At least, that’s the clearly stated view of current Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.
The worldwide economic downturn called the Great Depression, which persisted from 1929 until about 1939, was the longest and worst depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. While originating in the U.S., it ended up causing drastic declines in output, severe unemployment, and acute deflation in virtually every country on earth. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “the Great Depression ranks second only to the Civil War as the gravest crisis in American history.”

What exactly caused this economic tsunami that devastated the U.S. and much of the world?

In “A Monetary History of the United States,” Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman along with coauthor Anna J. Schwartz lay the mega-catastrophe of the Great Depression squarely at the feet of the Federal Reserve.

Here’s how Friedman summed up his views on the Fed and the Depression in an Oct. 1, 2000, interview with PBS:

PBS: You’ve written that what really caused the Depression was mistakes by the government. Looking back now, what in your view was the actual cause?

Friedman: Well, we have to distinguish between the recession of 1929, the early stages, and the conversion of that recession into a major catastrophe.
The recession was an ordinary business cycle. We had repeated recessions over hundreds of years, but what converted [this one] into a major depression was bad monetary policy.
The Federal Reserve System had been established to prevent what actually happened. It was set up to avoid a situation in which you would have to close down banks, in which you would have a banking crisis. And yet, under the Federal Reserve System, you had the worst banking crisis in the history of the United States. There’s no other example I can think of, of a government measure which produced so clearly the opposite of the results that were intended.

And what happened is that [the Federal Reserve] followed policies which led to a decline in the quantity of money by a third. For every $100 in paper money, in deposits, in cash, in currency, in existence in 1929, by the time you got to 1933 there was only about $65, $66 left. And that extraordinary collapse in the banking system, with about a third of the banks failing from beginning to end, with millions of people having their savings essentially washed out, that decline was utterly unnecessary.

At all times, the Federal Reserve had the power and the knowledge to have stopped that. And there were people at the time who were all the time urging them to do that. So it was, in my opinion, clearly a mistake of policy that led to the Great Depression.

Although economists have pontificated over the decades about this or that cause of the Great Depression, even the current Fed chairman Ben S. Bernanke, agrees with Friedman’s assessment that the Fed caused the Great Depression.

At a Nov. 8, 2002, conference to honor Friedman’s 90th birthday, Bernanke, then a Federal Reserve governor, gave a speech at Friedman’s old home base, the University of Chicago. Here’s a bit of what Bernanke, the man who now runs the Fed – and thus, one of the most powerful people in the world – had to say that day:

I can think of no greater honor than being invited to speak on the occasion of Milton Friedman’s ninetieth birthday. Among economic scholars, Friedman has no peer. …
Today I’d like to honor Milton Friedman by talking about one of his greatest contributions to economics, made in close collaboration with his distinguished coauthor, Anna J. Schwartz. This achievement is nothing less than to provide what has become the leading and most persuasive explanation of the worst economic disaster in American history, the onset of the Great Depression – or, as Friedman and Schwartz dubbed it, the Great Contraction of 1929-33.

… As everyone here knows, in their “Monetary History” Friedman and Schwartz made the case that the economic collapse of 1929-33 was the product of the nation’s monetary mechanism gone wrong. Contradicting the received wisdom at the time that they wrote, which held that money was a passive player in the events of the 1930s, Friedman and Schwartz argued that “the contraction is in fact a tragic testimonial to the importance of monetary forces.”

After citing how Friedman and Schwartz documented the Fed’s continual contraction of the money supply during the Depression and its aftermath – and the subsequent abandonment of the gold standard by many nations in order to stop the devastating monetary contraction – Bernanke adds:

… Before the creation of the Federal Reserve, Friedman and Schwartz noted, bank panics were typically handled by banks themselves – for example, through urban consortiums of private banks called clearinghouses. If a run on one or more banks in a city began, the clearinghouse might declare a suspension of payments, meaning that, temporarily, deposits would not be convertible into cash. Larger, stronger banks would then take the lead, first, in determining that the banks under attack were in fact fundamentally solvent, and second, in lending cash to those banks that needed to meet withdrawals. Though not an entirely satisfactory solution – the suspension of payments for several weeks was a significant hardship for the public – the system of suspension of payments usually prevented local banking panics from spreading or persisting. Large, solvent banks had an incentive to participate in curing panics because they knew that an unchecked panic might ultimately threaten their own deposits.

It was in large part to improve the management of banking panics that the Federal Reserve was created in 1913. However, as Friedman and Schwartz discuss in some detail, in the early 1930s the Federal Reserve did not serve that function. The problem within the Fed was largely doctrinal: Fed officials appeared to subscribe to Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon’s infamous ‘liquidationist’ thesis, that weeding out “weak” banks was a harsh but necessary prerequisite to the recovery of the banking system. Moreover, most of the failing banks were small banks (as opposed to what we would now call money-center banks) and not members of the Federal Reserve System. Thus the Fed saw no particular need to try to stem the panics. At the same time, the large banks – which would have intervened before the founding of the Fed – felt that protecting their smaller brethren was no longer their responsibility. Indeed, since the large banks felt confident that the Fed would protect them if necessary, the weeding out of small competitors was a positive good, from their point of view.

In short, according to Friedman and Schwartz, because of institutional changes and misguided doctrines, the banking panics of the Great Contraction were much more severe and widespread than would have normally occurred during a downturn. …

Let me end my talk by abusing slightly my status as an official representative of the Federal Reserve. I would like to say to Milton and Anna: Regarding the Great Depression. You’re right, we did it. We’re very sorry. But thanks to you, we won’t do it again.

Nu se stie ce forma a avut crucea, dar … suna frumos, chiar daca textul biblic a avut in vedere ceva diferit.

“Via de pe pamant NU a putut veni din spatiul cosmic”.

O capsula ruseasca infirma ipoteza originii extraterestre a vietii. Doua roci cu organisme fosilizate au fost contaminate intentionat cu bacterii si apoi atasate scutului exterior al unei capsule rusesti ce a revenit in atmosfera Pamantului. Rezultatele arata ca fosilele au supravietuit, nu insa si bacteriile. Vine viata din cosmos sau s-a dezvoltat ea pe Pamant? Iata o intrebare fara un raspuns actual.

Desi multi cercetatori atei s-au grabit sa investeasca in alternativa unei creatii venite din alta parte, realitatea unui experiment rusesc respinge aceasta posibilitate.

Posibilitatea originii vietii extraterestre este insa cat se poate de reala, ne spun multi cercetatori. Nu numai ca am reusit sa identificam molecule organice in spatiul de dincolo de planeta noastra, dar am gasit meteoriti despre care unii cercetatori spun ca ar contine organisme extraplanetare fosilizate. Aceasta inseamna ca, daca o roca extraplanetara contine fosile de organisme vii, acestea pot supravietui temperaturilor peste o mie de grade care se formeaza la intrarea in atmosfera Pamantului. Pe de alta parte, vestea proasta este ca nici una dintre bacteriile Chroococcidiopsis cu care fusesera infestate rocile nu a supravietuit impactului. Bacteriile au fost practic prajite de vii, desi resturile carbonizate se puteau recunoaste,  scrie Stiinta.info.

Chiar daca ar fi venit din alta parte a cosmosului, nici atunci n-am solutiona originea ei. Cel muit am amana-o … cu inca o intrebare: “Dar viata care a venit pe pamant de unde a venit?”

Incet dar sigur, religia stiintei atee se destrama in fata religiei inspirate a Bibliei.

“Pentru ce te mahnesti, suflete, si gemi inlauntrul meu?”

Aceasta intrebare aparent retorica apare de doua ori in psalmul 42 si o data in psalmul 43 cu care este pereche.

Problema pe care o ridica aceasta interogatie este urmatoarea: Ce ne spune ea despre omul care si-o pune?

Capacitatea introspectiei, a  cercetarii de sine, a lui “self realisation”, a meditatiei este treapta care separa lumea umana de lumea animala, vegetala si minerala. Nici un animal nu o are. Vaca, desi rumega, nu mediteaza la ceea ce i s-a intamplat peste zi. Boul se duce fara sovaiala drept inainte, “ca boul”, iar vitelul nu se mira decat atunci cand da de “o poarta noua”, la capatul drumului pe care venea deobicei “acasa”.

Poate ca ati auzit pe cineva spunand: “Nu ma mai mir ca nu ma inteleg cu ceilalti, pentru ca nu ma inteleg nici macar cu mine!” Observatia da pe fata, nu neaparat o inima certareata, cat o inteligenta foarte superioara.

Sunt sigur ca ati auzit de titlul “Galceava inteleptului cu lumea”. El subliniaza capacitatea omului de a fi o “personalitate” care nu merge cu valul, nu poate fi stapanit cu spiritul de turma. Fiecare om este o “exceptie” cu o individualitate foarte bine si precis conturata. Ei bine, personalitatea aceasta se poate uita din cand in cand in oglinda si poate sta de vorba … cu ea insasi.

“Pentru ce te mahnesti suflete?”

Peformanta psalmistului scoate la iveala conflictul pe care-l avem fiecare dintre noi in launtrul nostru atunci cand suntem trasi in directii contrare.

De exemplu, daca m-ati intreba daca-mi plac fustele mini, ar trebui sa raspund: “Da”, si “Nu”. Creierul meu, pus in miscare de instictele mele primare raspunde imediat: “Da”, dar personalitatea mea, stapanita de hamurile constiintei si indrumata de Duhul lui Dumnezeu spune: “Nu!”.

La fel se intampla si cu tine cand stai in fata unei farfurii cu o felie de tort: “Mai vrei una?” Aprinsa de pornirile papilelor gustative din cavitatea bucala si arsa de secretiile sucului gastric din stomac, gura s-ar grabi sa strige sincera: “Bineinteles!” Personalitatea este insa mai mult decat trupul material cu poftele lui nesatioase. Gandindu-te la ultima oara cand ai strivit cantarul, la privirile ironice ale colegilor, la privirile indiferente ale sotiei si la sfatul intelept al medicului, tu eviti putin si spui apoi: “Nu, multumesc frumos, nu mai vreau”.

In cazul psalmistului, dialogul se desfasoara intre personalitatea lui si sufletul cel mahnit dinlauntru. Din acest dialog putem extrapola intrebarea, transformand-o in: “Care sunt lucrurile carora le dai voie sa te mahneasca”.

La prima vedere, genocidul din Somalia este mai tulburator decat faptul ca ti s-a spart roata de la masina. Totusi, in socotelile noastre, roata sparta te intristeaza mult mai mult decat ceeace se petrece in Somalia.

Daca s-a ars motorul de la masina de spalat te poti supara foarte tare, poti spune ca asa ceva nu trebuia sa se intample tocmai acum si tocmai tie. Ai datorii, n-ai de unde sa iei bani ca sa platesti reparatia, etc. Necazul poate parea disproportionat de mare.

Gandeste-te insa ca ai putea primi aceasta veste in seara aceleiasi zile in care doctorul tocmai te-a informat ca prietenul sau ruda ta moare din cauza unei tumori inoperabile pe creier? Ce valoare mai are atunci stricarea unei masini de spalat rufe?

Inteleasa in acest context, intrebarea psalmistului este semnul celei mai superioare intelepciuni duhovnicesti, iar restul psalmului nu face altceva decat sa ne convinga de micimea “problemelor” cu care ne framantam fata de imensa marime a binecuvantarile pe care le avem si care ne asteapta.

Sfatul intelept pe care si-l da psalmistul este si sfatul pe care trebuie sa ni-l dam si noi noua insine:

“Nadajduieste in Dumnezeu, caci iarasi Il voi lauda; El este mantuirea mea si Dumnezeul meu!”

Cat de mare sa fi fost motivele mahnirii lui? Daca este adevarat ca autorul este david, dincolo de Iordan (v.6), cand fugea de Absalom, atunci am putea spune ca situatia psalmistului se prezenta cama sa:

Fiul sau dorea sa-l omoare, generalul sau dorea sa-l omoare, cel mai bun dintre sfetnicii lui doreau sa-l omoare, semintiile lui Isarel il lepadasera si veneau dupa el sa-l omoare …

Care sunt necazurile tale? Se pot compara cu ale lui? Gandeste-te ca Divid si-a spus: “N-am sa las nimic din toate acestea sa ma tulbure! Dumnezeu este de partea mea! Planul Lui este desavarsit! Cred din toata inima ca la sfarsit va fi bine, chiar si raul de azi se poate transforma intr-un mare bine! Oricate de multi ori fi ei, de partea mea este insusi Dumnezeu!”

El, El, El ! El si numai El este rasplata mea ce afoarte mare!
El este turnul meu de scapare!
El este stanca si mantuitorul meu!
El este Mirele care ma iubeste!
El este Tatal de la care se coboara tot darul bun si desavarsit!
El este Tatl orfanilor, ocrotitorul vaduvelor!

El … si lista argumentelor noastre ar putea continua la infinit, ba chiar va continua … la infinit … in infinit!

Stiam ca “Paparuda” este un obicei pagan stramosesc pentru chemarea ploii. Am aflat insa ca exista si un altfel de a vorbi despre ploaie …

Aseara, la cercul nostru de rugaciune, Liuda ne-a povestit patania unor pentecostali plecati in misiune prin partile Clujului. Venisera intr-uns at uitat parca de lume; facusera un drum lung si putin stiau patania pe care aveau sa-o traisaca.

Venisera pe vreme buna, cu soarele sus si nori nicaieri. Cand au scos insa instrumentele sa cante in ulita satului, in fata singurei case care adapostea o familie de pocaiti, micul grup n-a apucat sa cante decat cateva strofe ca, asa ca din senin, venite parca de dupa un colt unde-i pandisera, s-au pornit suvoaiele. Ploua torential de rupea pamantul. Uzi pana la piele, cu instrumentele ude, “pocaitii” s-au dat batuti si s-au refugiat in casa fratelui lor de credinta.

Nici sa se roage nu le venea … facusera atata amar de drum de pomana. Se parea ca cerul le incurcase toate socotelile.

Cand s-a mai potolit putin potopul de afara, gazda a iesit sa vada cine striga in strada si s-a intors sa le spuna: “Sunt cinsprezece barbati si spun sa iesiti afara la ei, ca au sa va ceara ceva…”

“Pocaitii” s-au uitat speriati unii la altii: “Si udati si batuti?” De asta venisera ei la “evanghelizare”?

De iesit au trebuit sa iasa si, ca sa le fie mai la indemana, au iesit toti, desi grupul lor nu era prea aratos pentru bataie …

“V-am ruga frumos, daca nu va este cu suparare, sa mai cantati cateva cantari de-ale dumneavoastra. Ca popa al nost’ tot face slujbe si canta de cateva saptamani de zile, dar ploaia n-a venit. Dumneavoastra numa’ ce-ati cantat putin si v-a ascultat Domnu’ . Va rugam sa ne mai cantati ca-i mare seceta si avem nevoie de apa …”

Cerul, la urma urmei, stiuse el ce trebuie sa faca. Stapanul ploii pregatise fara sa stie ei “situatia”, asa ca satenii sa vina ei singuri sa le ceara apa pentru seceta. Si le-au dat … dar cel mai frumos a fost ca le-au dat si ceva din … apa vie a Cuvantului lui Dumnezeu,  buna si numai potrivita pentru orice fel de seceta …
