Would you believe me if you said I’m in love?! Well it’s true I am and I am so excited to tell you all about my continued love for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the St. Jude Celebration of Hope and for the second time I got to see with my own eyes all the wonderful work St. Jude does. I have seen the commercials since I was a child and in stores I’ve often donated to the cause, so it was a good feeling to see it in person. The St. Jude Celebration of Hope seminar, which supports Radio Cares for St. Jude Kids®, a radio fundraising event led by top supporter Radio One, Inc. that shares touching stories of St. Jude patients and families. Since 2008, the event has raised more than millions in cash and pledges.

The hospital hosts this annual meeting to recognize some of the top African-American St. Jude supporters, including: radio industry representatives, Greek organizations, Inspirational music artists, celebrities and churches, all giving back. It’s a chance to see first-hand the impact of the fundraising efforts taking place nationwide. Collectively these groups are responsible for more than $18 million a year, in donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Which is a big deal because the hospital costs $2.7 million a day to operate!

Let me be the first to tell you St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is AMAZING, it’s America’s Children’s Hospital. They provide housing and I mean housing we would all love to live in with our families. And wait it gets better, five-star chefs who provide food made to order food the kids and their families, a garden on campus, a host of corporate sponsors, they host a yearly prom and sibling day, they have staff you just want to hug and it’s all with one goal in mind, Finding Cures and Saving Children! One of the first things we learned upon arriving was that no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude and that did it for me. I grew up with two parents that still to this day, work in the medical field, so I know how expensive medical treatments are.

Each year St. Jude treats 8,000 patients a year, not one of which comes with a bill, I didn’t even see a billing department. During my time in Memphis, I had a chance to hear from several former St. Jude patients, some as old as 50, who were treated there as children. The work they do is real, from treating children with some of the most life threatening diseases in the country to finding cures for cancer and sickle cell disease to name a few.

I was moved by the deep tie to the civil rights movement that St.Jude has, from being integrated from day one in southern Tennessee, in the city where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated speaks volumes. The founder Danny Thomas made it clear from day one that no child would go untreated regardless of their race, religion or income and for over 50 years later the culture and traditions continue to remain deeply rooted in the organization’s history.

We had a chance to tour the National Civil Rights museum with an incredible tour guide, Mr. Lionel, it was an experience I will never forget. Several celebrities joined in the weekend celebration including: Gospel musician Jonathan McReynolds, Grammy nominated gospel artist Jekalyn Carr, gospel singer Casey J and Grammy nominated, platinum-selling R&B musician Anthony Hamilton performed during Celebration of Hope.

Throughout the weekend, my number one goal was to gather ways that we can help, as I always say if it affects one of us, it affects all of us. If ever I have a sick child or know of a sick child, hands down I would want them treated at St.Jude and I believe if you saw what I did, you would say the same thing.

Ways We Can Help:

Give Blood– Did you know that only 4% of all blood donations are from African Americans according to the Red Cross. Blood that closely matches a patient’s is less likely to be rejected by the patient and can mean fewer complications after a transfusion. Genetically-similar blood is superior for people who need repeated blood transfusions, for conditions like sickle cell anemia. Increasing African-American donations is vital because blood types O and B, the blood types of about 70 percent of African-Americans, are the blood types most in demand. Your blood donation can help African-Americans suffering from diseases such as sickle cell anemia, cancer and heart disease.

Get Social – Be sure to follow St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital on Twitter @StJude and on Instagram @StJude! Spread the word on how they help, share patient photos, videos and testimonials all which can be found at www.stjude.org. St. Jude patients, partners and celebrities are sharing their reasons for being grateful this holiday season. Use #GiveThanks to take part!

Shop- Need the perfect gift? While you’re out shopping for the holidays, look for the St.Jude logo at many of America’s favorite companies including Best Buy, Marshalls and ToysRUs plus many more and give to help them live.

Give $25 – For $25 a month, you can make a difference in the life of a child. Yes sounds cliche, but it’s true! For just $25 a month—about .83 cents a day—you will be helping St. Jude treat children battling cancer and conduct research that may one day lead to a cure. Here’s the link to get started.

Listen – Radio One is a huge supporter and partner of St.Jude Children’s Hospital! The Gospel stations nationwide support St.Jude through the Radio of Hope Program, so find your local Radio One station and learn other ways you can support. But it doesn’t just stop at Radio One, tons of stations from around the country were there to support.

Go to Church! – Encourage your church to become involved with St. Jude! The St. Jude Sunday of Hope program encourages churches across the country to unite as a body of believers to help children suffering from pediatric cancer, sickle cell disease and other catastrophic illnesses. Through this program, church congregations show their love and support for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by giving a special love offering on one Sunday. Click here to sign your church up today!

You know I’m a sucker for social change in our communities and to think that one day we can live in a world where a hospital like St.Jude doesn’t even exist is exhilarating. I saw the research first hand, I met the patients, the parents, the doctors and I believe it can happen and this is the hospital to do it. With their commitment to finding cures and saving kids, all without a bill it’s something to celebrate. During the concert Saturday night, we had the opportunity to witness a super special performance by aspiring rapper St. Jude patient Nick. Weeks earlier Nick had the chance to meet and freestyle with hip-hop artist Lecrae check out this inspiring video and be sure to smile and cry it’s ok.

I salute all of the celebs that support these children and the mission of St.Jude including: Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hamilton, Jazmine Sullivan, Lance Gross, Elise Neal, Laman Rucker, Hill Harper, Yolanda Adams and the list goes on, what an amazing cause to support! #GivingIsGood at St. Jude!

Over the weekend our newsfeed were flooded with horrifying images of those affected by Hurricane Harvey, the worst storm in over 10 years to hit Texas. From images of young children trapped on top of their kitchen counters to nursing homes with seniors flooded to their torso to images of destruction, we’ve all wrapped our arms around Texas in prayer and we want to help. Here’s what we know and how you can support.

Sources close to Beyonce tell BCG that we will see a big announcement on an initiative with Beyonce’s Beygood Foundation as soon as this week. Many celebrities will be launching Crowdrise campaigns too – one such campaign created by Family Business Beer Company has already raised over $60,000.

In lieu of the spirit of giving, we want to remind you to be weary of random GoFund Me Pages and give to trusted sources. A meme over the weekend cautioning people to not give to Red Cross after what happened in Haiti has caused many to question giving to Red Cross. Yes the concerns with the American Red Cross are valid considering what happened with Haiti. However our forever President Barack Obama tweeted the foundation as one way to support tight now and we have hope that they will do right by the citizens of Texas. To donate donate today HARVEY ago 90999.

The Salvation Army is launching emergency disaster relief efforts – they will be delivering pallets of water and food into 27 mobile kitchen across the state. You can donate by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY. A few things to know: 100% of your donation may not go directly to the cause, there are often credit card and admin fees, but a good portion will make it. Go to give.org to research relief organizations that meet BBB standards!

In-kind donations are needed too, people have lost everything. Many need food, diapers, clothing, baby food, shoes and much more. The true impact and need will be assessed in the next few weeks but there are plenty of ways to support and we encourage you to use these tips to get started.

Here’s a shout out to a few good people leading the charge Air BNB who we’re told is providing free housing for evacuees and also HEB Grocery Stores who will donate $100,000 if you live in Texas and shop this week you can donate too and it will be matched. We will continue to vet other opportunities to give back and share them with you, if you have an event or campaign to raise funding or items for the cause please email us at tips@blackcelebritygiving.com!

Be The Match®, the organization that operates the world’s largest and most diverse donor registry, and Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley, have teamed up on a new public service announcement campaign, Heritage Holds the Cure, to urge Blacks and African Americans to register as potential marrow donors.

Heritage Holds the Cure celebrates the rich heritage of the Black and African American community. The campaign encourages those within that community to join the Be The Match Registry® and spread the word about the need for more Black and African American marrow donors.

“Family isn’t defined by blood,” Conley said. “As an athlete, I’ve always been surrounded by family, whether it’s a teammate or a fan – the love is there. My community is my family and knowing the heritage that binds many of us has the potential to save other members of our ‘family’ is incredible. It’s something I want to be a part of, especially since I’ve watched two of my cousins battle sickle cell disease.”

Be The Match connects patients with their donor match for a life-saving marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. It manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world with 16 million members. Of those members, 5 percent identify as Black or African American. Given the current makeup of the registry, Blacks and African Americans are the least likely to find a suitable match.

“Currently, individuals of Black and African American ancestry are underrepresented on the registry, making it more difficult to find donor matches for those suffering from blood diseases like sickle cell,” said Mary Halet, Director of Community Engagement at Be The Match. “With this new campaign, our hope is to raise awareness of the registry, dispel some of the myths about marrow donation, and get more young people of diverse backgrounds to sign up as potential lifesaving matches.”

A patient’s ethnic background plays a large role in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing, which is used to match patients with donors for bone marrow or cord blood transplants. Since HLA types are inherited, the best chance of finding a suitable donor may be with someone of a similar racial or ethnic background.

For thousands of Black and African American patients with life-threatening blood diseases like sickle cell, a potential cure is available. But the combination of rich heritage, complex tissue types and a smaller pool of potential donors, makes it harder to find a match.

Spend five minutes with Tyrone Legett and you’ll instantly hear his passion to rejuvenate broken communities in Louisiana. The former NFL Player played many games in the Mercedes Benz Superdome (then Louisiana Superdome) but the touchdowns he is scoring today are worth much more than points on a scoreboard.

Legett, a native of Colombia, South Carolina, embraced Louisiana as home as a Defensive Back for the New Orleans Saints in 1995. After his NFL career ended he decided to remain in the area. “I saw a need here and I wanted to help provide solutions,” said Leggett. “64% of the residents were renters and most of the jobs were service jobs. Without a realistic path, many of these hardworking people would never be able to own homes. They deserved to own their homes,” he said.

“The opportunity to own your own home is the best part of the American dream. It should be available to all people.”

He began Legett Construction with a plan to build affordable homes for low income families but also help them qualify for the homes. “We have helped people who have never owned a home get the opportunity to buy homes for the first time,” he explained. Through the Community Reinvestment Act, he was able to share his ideas. Those ideas eventually attracted a partnership with Whitney Bank. With funds available through the Federal Government and the support of Whitney Bank, he became the liason to bridge all entities together.

Legett Construction has built homes all over the Greater New Orleans Metro. His homes are now occupied in Harvey (Westbank), the Lower 9th Ward, the Bywater District, and Uptown New Orleans. The company has also built homes in Baton Rouge. His company has actually been the link to bring other minority construction companies into the fold by contracting them to share the work opportunities. Legett is responsible for building hundreds of new homes and helping over 300 families qualify to buy them.

“Mr. Legett is not just building homes. His commitment is much deeper than that. Working for him, I have learned his greater passion is rebuilding Black families,” said Joyce Burges, Leggett Construction Administrative Assistant. “He gets it. The consequences of poverty and the stronghold of financial debt. He is on a mission to help people turn their lives around,” she said.

Burges, a former City Councilwoman in Baker, LA, says Leggett’s ideas were so illustrated that she could see his vision to restore the community plain and clear. Rather than seek another term she vowed to work with Legett to rebuild her town. “He not only had the resources but he had a plan. A clear plan that would hire people, rejuvenate areas which were deteriorating, but he also had the tenacity to fight the kind of opposition that would surely come his way,” she said.

Maybe that’s the reason he stepped out on Faith and opened the only Black owned grocery store in Baton Rouge, LA in an area that’s predominately Black and always overlooked in comparison to other thriving areas of the city. North Baton Rouge, which consists of Baker, Scottlandville, and Glen Oaks communities saw it’s landmark Winn Dixie close down two years ago. A tragedy that would require residents to drive an even further distance just to make groceries. “It wasn’t fair that these residents should continue feeling ostracized from the economic growth that other parts of the city have become used to,” said Leggett. “So, I made up in my mind that I would do something about it.”

After Winn Dixie closed down, he entertained the idea of several grocery chains but the Sav A Lot Corporation seemed to make the most sense. “It was the best fit for this community. Not only have we created jobs in the store but we continue to motivate our workers to think bigger than Save A Lot. This store should be a stepping stone. It should not be the final step.”

Legett sees the store as a way for residents to get affordable groceries while providing jobs to help produce stable work opportunities in an area that had become used to seeing businesses come and go. “We are here for the long haul. Our vision doesn’t stop with just this one location,” he said. “We plan to open two more stores.”

When residents heard their new grocery store was Black owned, it made them even more proud to shop there. One customer cried when the store opened, telling Tyrone… “I’ve never seen someone who looks like you doing the things you do.” She amongst others, drive from other parts of the city just to shop in a Black owned super market.

One thing I love about reality TV is that it is REAL. Addressing issues like stress in one’s career is something we all can relate with. Last nights episode of the new WeTV series Growing Up Hip Hop ATL (GUHHATL) showed a different side of the glamorous life. As I watched the daughter of Tiny and step-daughter of Hip-Hop star TI cry while reflecting on the state of her career, something in me connected. I was immediately drawn in because truth is we all have been there. Stressed with our careers, wondering when it’s going to happen for us and all we’re left with is a few tears. As Brandon Barnes asked her on last night’s episode -“What has being the daughter of famous people got her,” she couldn’t answer. Truth is not matter who we are, some of the blessings we’ve been given, you still have to work for your dreams and you have to manage your stress. One thing I was not for was Brandon’s antics, it was just too much for TV or not, as a coach or manager your job should never be to tear anybody down. I saw a bit of stress arise in the situation with Toya Wright and her daughter Reginae as parents often do, we take on the stress of our children but how much is too much. When do we dry the tears, draw the line and step away.

This is an amazing teaching moment, so let’s talk three easy ways to handle stress.

Set aside leisure time – sometimes it’s all about you. Too often we seek to handle the burdens of everyone else or we’re afraid of speaking our minds to guard their feelings. If you don’t take care of you, you’re not able to take care of anyone else. You come first!

Do something you enjoy every day – you’re responsible for bringing a smile to your face. Looking at Zonnique on last nights episode, I didn’t see her smile. She seems sad, stressed and in the end her tears showed it. Make sure in your daily life you do something everyday that you enjoy, something that brings a smile to your face.

Don’t over-commit yourself – this is huge! We saw it thru the eyes of GUHHATL’s very own Zonnique, was she ready for the career or not? It’s hard to say, but it seemed like Brandon expected more than what she had to offer. This is a classic way to find yourself stressed, be honest with yourself. You can lie to anyone else but never you, if now’s not the time say no, never over-commit.

Looking forward to the next episode of GUHHATL, in just three episodes we can already see we’re in for a treat. How are you liking the season so far? Do you agree that it’s not all peaches and cream growing up Hip-Hop?

TV Personality and Entrepreneur Marlo Hampton to host "Glam it Up" Mentoring Event to Benefit Atlanta's Foster Youth!

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, TV Personality and Entrepreneur, Marlo Hampton and the National Youth Advocate Program will host her annual Glam It Up, Inc., event, “LESSONS, LAUGHTER, and LOVE!” at the Lake City Community Center in Lake City, GA. Glam It Up is a one-day mentoring program for teen girls in foster care featuring make-up and spa treatments, life skills training, entrepreneurial and education guidance.

Co-hosting this year’s event is the National Youth Advocate Program, a private, not for profit youth and family advocacy organization that currently serves youth and families in Georgia, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and South Carolina. NYAP provides cost-effective, community-based services and support to children, youth, and families since 1978. “On behalf of NYAP, we can’t thank Marlo enough for her commitment to serving our most vulnerable youth and families in Atlanta and the greater region,” says Stacie Conliffe, Executive Director for National Youth Advocate Program, Inc. “Her Glam IT Up event provides our youth and families with a day of fun, laughter and love which is needed by all and is so deserving. Marlo is a true leader who walks the talk. We can’t thank her enough.”

“Every year I really look forward to the Glam It Up event. It’s definitely one of my favorites,” says Hampton. “I love spending time and bonding with the girls over our shared experience as I too was once in foster care, she continues. Hopefully, I can be proof positive that the life they want is possible, despite this difficult time. I just want them to know they can live their dreams if they just believe in themselves.”

Marlo was also a ward of the state who grew up in the foster care system due to her mother’s battle with addiction and abuse. She founded Glam It Up, Inc., in 2011 as a means to encourage and build self-esteem in young girls in the system who often lose their sense of self during this unfortunate time in their lives.

“My Grandma Arrie always told me I had worth and value. I was God’s masterpiece, not a mistake or a foster care statistic,” Hampton shares. “I’ve been fortunate to have people like her invest in me when I was in these girls shoes. Now, it’s my turn to give back and hopefully make a difference in their lives like Grandma Arrie did in mine.”

Today, Marlo is a positive example of what’s possible after foster care. Despite the turmoil in her younger years she went on to defeat the odds by becoming a breakout star of the RHOA (Real Housewives of Atlanta) franchise and I Love NeNe, The Wedding. She currently hosts the digital segment #AskMarlo, and a weekly web series, “Marlo’s Closet”where she is both host and Executive Producer.

Prior to her television debut, she owned the Red Carpet Boutique that featured high-end fashion apparel and catered to the who’s who of Atlanta’s elite. Marlo is also a college graduate who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida where she studied Social Work and Interdisciplinary Science – proving that self-love and hard work absolutely pay off if you don’t give up.

This year Marlo’s sponsors include: Neiman Marcus, Deepa Gurnani, Fendi, Vamp Boutique and DJ Khaled to name a few who will provide gift bag items or monetary support for the event. The girls will also be pampered by beauty industry experts and hear from business leaders and financial advisors including Valerie Moore, Brand Consultant at Chantelle, who will hold a bra fitting workshop, Tarmel Wallace, Small Business Consultant at the Bank of America who will lead the ladies in a workshop on Credit and Finance. The event will close with a musical selection from R&B Singer Kenya Jori.
Temporary Protected Status for Haiti Extended for Six Months

Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of Haiti (and eligible individuals without nationality who last habitually resided in Haiti) through Jan. 22, 2018. After consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies and reviewing country conditions, Secretary Kelly has determined that a limited, six-month extension is warranted. Although Haiti has made significant progress in recovering from the January 2010 earthquake that prompted its designation, conditions in Haiti supporting its designation continue to be met at this time.

Current beneficiaries of Haiti’s TPS designation seeking to extend their TPS must re-register by July 24, 2017. TPS beneficiaries who re-register may request a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Those who re-register and request a new EAD during the 60-day re-registration period may receive an automatic extension of their expiring EAD for up to 180 days from the date their current EAD expires. Current EADs will not be automatically extended without a new EAD request. If a beneficiary’s EAD request is approved, they will receive a new EAD with an expiration date of Jan. 22, 2018. TPS beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to re-register and file their EAD applications as early as possible to avoid lapses in documentation of employment authorization.

During this six-month extension, beneficiaries are encouraged to prepare for their return to Haiti in the event Haiti’s designation is not extended again, including requesting updated travel documents from the government of Haiti. At least 60 days before Jan. 22, 2018, Secretary Kelly will re-evaluate the designation for Haiti and will determine whether another extension, a re-designation, or a termination is warranted, in full compliance with the Immigration and Nationality Act. The designation of TPS was intended by Congress to be temporary, and the Secretary will fully re-evaluate the country conditions to determine whether Haiti’s TPS designation should continue.

To re-register, current TPS beneficiaries must submit:
