Criteria Meeting

The Criteria Meeting proposals are as follows -

1. Points awarded for a cancelled game in the Advanced criteria be increased from 30 to 32 to reflect the loss of 2 points awarded for providing an umpire - assuming that the rules regarding umpires stays the same. This would make an awarded match more equal to a won match, and would bring the criteria into line with the rest of the divisions who currently are awarded 30 points, which equates to the maximum award for a win batting second.

2. The requirement for clubs to belong to a CCC should be dropped as there are now a number of measures in place to ensure that the clubs belonging to the BCL are properley and correctly run. The CCC offers very little to Saturday League Cricket apart from replacing a game with a friendly due to a cancellation. It is proposed that the league retain a membership (if possible) to facilitate this service for member clubs, with the clubs then paying the league when and if they use the service.

3. All games to start at 1pm

4. Each bowler should be limited to a maximum of 25% of the available overs at the start of the innings. This rule should apply to all teams - not just teams in the Premiership criteria

5. It should take no longer than 3 hours to bowl 45 overs. For any overs not bowled within the permitted time, 6 penalty runs will be awarded to the batting side plus any runs scored off the remaining overs when they are bowled.

6. If a team in the Premier Criteria has a non playing scorer then they are awarded 2 bonus points.

Stoke Row Claim Thrilling Victory

Pinkneys Green Vs. Stoke Row

Date: 8th August, 2009.

Venue: Pinkneys Green.

Toss: Stoke Row won the toss and elected to bat.

Result: Pinkneys Green (8) lost to Stoke Row (34) by 5 runs.

Pitch:A tad green but a fine track for batting on.

Weather: Sunny all day and hopefully a precursor for the final three weeks of the season.

Highlights: Will Macdonald’s mesmeric 69 (the best this correspondent has seen him bat), the vital 9th wicket stand between Rich Ashton (34*) and Toby Fenn (17); Michael Elliott’s 4-29. In reply, Damian Atherton struck a fluid 39, Jags Dhillon 35. Sam Boughton (3-39) bowled exceptionally, and, sadly, there is only one ‘golden-arm’ at Stoke Row – Christopher Young (0.4-0.6-2) read further!!

Catering: An excellent standard in terms of quality, but again, quantity was slightly lacking. Four loaves really isn’t enough, with five the bare minimum and six the appropriate level in this reporter’s mind. The heated garlic bread was a delightful bonus, although further cakes would have been appreciated, especially in light of what has been provided at Newlands Lane over the preceding few weeks.

Inaugural Sulhamstead U-15 Sixes a huge success

Sunday 2nd August saw the first Sulhamstead U-15 sixes tournament. Teams from Crown Wood, Shinfield, Finchamstead, Purley and Royal Ascot joined the hosts in a round-robin tournament followed by a final between the two top sides.

The identity of the two finalists was in doubt right until the last round-robin game when a Crown Wood win over Finchamstead meant that Sulhamstead and Purley contested the final. The final itself was a well contested, close encounter with the hosts eventually victorious by a mere 6 runs.

The whole tournament was played in a superb spirirt throughout and all those present appeared to enjoy a full days, high standard, exciting cricket.

Thanks to all the players and supporters for making it an excellent inaugural tournament.

Thanks also to Serious Cricket of Thatcham for supporting the event with a generous donation towards the awards on the day.

Howell Heroics Secure Stoke Row Advancement

Stoke Row Vs. Emmbrook & Bearwood

Date: 18th July, 2009.

Venue: Newlands Lane, Stoke Row.

Toss: Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and elected to field.

Result: Stoke Row won by 183 runs.

Pitch: Remarkably placid despite the overnight rain – a very ‘dead’ track that offered little to the bowlers. Many thanks to Peppard’s Martin Evans for the use of both his time and mower after Row’s packed up on the Tuesday.

Weather: As with the preceding week, a real mixture – sun, rain, heat, wind.

Highlights: A Stoke Row record opening stand of 269 between Nick Howell (134*) and Will Macdonald (118*). Howell’s hat trick, allied to Sam Boughton’s (2-13) and Dion Sampson’s (2-32). The blinding one-handed catches by Darren Clark and Sampson. The chanting of Barbershop Quartet Dicky Lunnon, Marcus Lunnon, Josh Browne and Noddy Holder – ‘Give Paddy a bowl’ was perhaps the finest of the songs.

Catering: The single greatest tea I have eaten in 15 years of playing cricket. Stoke Row have something of a reputation for producing top class teas (Marcus Lunnon, Sue Boughton, Sam Fletcher, Pat Ashton etc.), but Suzanne Armstrong’s debut effort boggled the mind. EIGHT different sandwich fillings (including Bacon and Egg, Sausage, Tuna and Sweetcorn, Ham and Mustard) were supplemented by chicken nuggets with a tray of four different sauces (hoy, sweet and sour, BBQ and tomato ketchup). A mix of fruit (including the biggest strawberries this correspondent has ever seen), home made sausage rolls (quite beautiful), and even a TIRAMISU (also a carrot cake and lemon slices – with bowls and spoons!) made this offering inspired. It honestly could have satisfied two games. Unreal, and worthy of a ‘ten out of five’ on the mark card.

Mortimer West End Vs. BCL Select XI

Date: 12th July, 2009.

Venue: Mortimer West End Cricket Club.

Toss: Mortimer West End won the toss and elected to field.

Result: BCL Select XI won by 21 runs.

Pitch: Slightly two-paced in the first twenty overs due to the overnight rain but played perfectly true after that initial anomaly.
Weather: A real mixture – sun, rain, heat, wind. Picturesque rainbows appeared to present a colourful backdrop to a fine fixture.

Highlights: Will Macdonald (66 from 84) and James Wheeler (62 from 52) batted marvellously for the Select XI. Jamie Stead (35) and Tom Mackenzie (87) were supreme for MWE. Nick Howell (3-27) and Sam Boughton (2-35) did the damage for the Select. Titch Vickers imperious keeping display was ‘Foster-esque’. Select manager Rich Ashton’s 1 handed take at long-on from an Andy Johnson 6 is also worthy of mention, despite being a complete fluke!

Catering: Incredible. 1st things 1st – wherever the sausage rolls came from, I implore all Premier Division sides to go to this shop. They were AMAZING. Tremendous array of sandwiches, pizza, fruit etc. as well. The BBQ afterwards was phenomenal as well – magnificent beef burgers as well as excellent hot dogs ensured nobody left with any hunger.

Stoke Row Secure Stunning Winning Draw

Date: 11th July, 2009.

Venue: Peppard.

Toss: Peppard won the toss and elected to field.

Result: Peppard (11) claimed a losing draw vs. Stoke Row (17).

Pitch: Extremely green. The overnight rain created an extremely two-paced track that was difficult to bat on.

Weather: Miserable – a combination of overcast skies and drizzle throughout the afternoon.

Highlights: Matt Reeves fine bowling (5-23), supported by Roy Hayden (4-31). 15 year-old Rich Armstrong made a classy 29 for Stoke until being brilliantly caught & bowled by Hayden. Andy Watts (31) batted well for Peppard, whilst Dion Sampson (2-24) and Will Macdonald (3-27) excelled with the ball. Row’s fielding was outstanding, illustrated by Macdonald’s one-handed slip catch, Sampson’s direct hit run out from the boundary and the Howell-Clark run out of Ian Jackson.

Catering: A very fine effort. A good selection of sandwiches, supplemented by a fine array of savouries and fruit. The option of homemade cakes always ensures a glowing recommendation from this correspondent, and Peppard fulfilled this option.
