This is the end of b.chic design. I decided it was just time to change things up a bit, so I started a new design blog: paisley & pine. It is still a work in progress, but I'm having fun with it, and trying to do at least one or two posts weekly. It's tough to find time to dedicate to blogging while meeting my three month old's needs, but its definitely worth a try!

I'll keep this page live, so none of my old posts are lost, but I'm excited for you to check out paisleyandpine.com! Thanks to everyone who read b.chic over the years, I hope you'll follow my progress on paisley & pine too!

the crib

Due to the fact that we will be sharing our bedroom with baby, we have opted for a "mini crib". Its just a little bit more apartment sized, but should comfortably sleep our child until he is about 24 months. Since we are going with the philosophy of staying put for now, the mini crib is really our only option. A conventional crib would have been too big. The difference between the two types is anywhere from 15-13 inches in length. Which in a small apartment, is quite substantial.

The layout of the bedroom will look a lot like the plan above. The bed will stay in the center. We will lose one of the two taller dressers we currently have, in favor of a longer, lower piece that will also function as a changing surface. The crib will be ever-so-conveniently placed next to my side of the bed. I will actually be able to stay in bed, and stick my fingers through the slats of the crib to give baby a reassuring pat on the head, or tickle of the toes! How is that for no-fuss parenting. No worries about having to sleepwalk my klutzy self down a long hall to the nursery!

This is the crib we will be purchasing within the next month from Target online. The Riley Mini Crib in white by Delta. Its nice and simple, but still allows for a crib skirt, which most of the other mini cribs did not. That being said, finding linens for mini cribs is quite the challenge. Target and Babies r Us had barely anything! I finally found some more options on Diapers.com, which will be a great source for sheets, but will be attempting to make my own bumper and skirt. I'll be using some of those cute Michael Miller fabrics I showed you in my previous post.

We can't wait to get the crib and get it set up, but first things first... finding an affordable storage unit for the things we will have to part with in order to fit it in!

new mission

It's high time to nest and get the baby prepping underway in the apartment. Since it has been way too stressful to fantasize that we might live in a different place, or we might move back to Bremerton or we might just have a second bedroom for a nursery, we have decided to act as if we will be staying put. That makes me feel a little bit better, but now we have a major design and organizing challenge to face. The fact is that the two of us and the cats fit in here snugly, but contentedly, and that the baby will be no small addition.

The idea of this seemingly impossible task has really got my wheels spinning. This is a good thing, since I've been at a complete standstill for months on end. My goal now, is to prove that it can be done. A little family can live in the city in a one bedroom apartment with one closet and be happy, organized, and have a beautiful space. Breaking this feat down into doable projects, I will detail the process of sorting our belongings, creating storage where there was none, carving a nursery out of a corner in our bedroom, and making it all look good to boot.

The first thing on my list is to scrutinize every piece of furniture. Is it serving a purpose, could it be more useful, could we do better with something different?
Take for instance what I refer to as my work space. The pedestal table I scored last year at the Bainbridge Island Rotary Sale for $20.

It is a great table, no doubt. But, it just gets stacked upon, has no drawers for bills, and desk-y supplies, and it's not comfortable to sit at. The verdict: time to move it to storage. What I am looking for in its place is a real desk. I am thinking knee-hole with drawers on each side. I want used and I want it cheap. This does not mean I am willing to compromise on quality. As for looks, as long as it has good bones, I'll paint it if need be, and change out the hardware.

This is just an example of how I am looking at everything with fresh eyes in my attempt to streamline, declutter and make the place more baby friendly. Similar statements can be made about most pieces in the apartment right now. It just won't work to bring a baby home as things are right now, so we are are going to have to make some changes. And I am very much okay with that! It's good to finally have a project with some depth, vision and importance.

cleaning out the cobwebs

Okay. I admit it. Ever since we moved into our city dwelling, I have felt creatively stifled. The lack of freedom to paint, the absence of remodeling dreams, and the tightening of space almost choked out my desire to decorate. How sad is that? I thought I would become enlightened and inspired in this new place, when in fact, the exact opposite happened. I became blocked. Then, I became pregnant!

Honest to goodness, the first three months completely zapped my energy for anything but getting up and getting to work. Then, the weird, "this IS really happening" stage set in. And finally, now six months into it, I am experiencing a sort of personal awakening and renewal. Where this will lead, there is no telling, as I am about to encounter many, many unforeseen challenges.

With this new addition to the family, comes all sorts of new questions. Will we stay here in this apartment? Will we stay here in Seattle? Should we move back to our house in Bremerton? And my overwhelming urge to nest seriously conflicts with the reality that we have no nursery! How can a planner like me get prepared for my little baby boy with these questions unanswered?

Despite these major issues, I can still envision a nurturing, organized and cozy home for our baby to start his life in. Always, and forever, keeping in mind the important pieces: he will have all the love he needs, a place to sleep, and food to eat!

I'll try my best to track these changes and keep you posted on my design ideas and furniture finds as I make every effort to get ready for the challenges and good times ahead.

a vibrant outlook

Lately I have been drawn to a more neutral palette than my usual inclination toward deep, but cozy colors. However, I just finished reading a feature in February's Better Homes and Gardens, and I have fallen in love with the design sense of Elaine Griffin. Bold, earthy and contemporary but classic, Griffin somehow blends and balances trendy colors and patterns with a dose of timelessness.

The combination of rich orange and leaf green has got me wishing I could paint the walls of our new apartment.

I am sort of on a design book buying binge, so I think I'll add her book Design Rules to my shopping list. I have really enjoyed viewing her portfolio on her website, www.elainegriffin.com.

Since I can't paint, I guess I can get my color punches in the form of artwork, accessories and fabric. Maybe once I find those perfect bookcases, I could paint them a nice juicy color, like Benjamin Moore's Rumba Orange. Doesn't that just sound like a good time?

A photo I took for a previous post on revamping my home office, inspired by this issue of domino.

Well, it has been almost a year to the date that domino magazine announced its untimely closure. Call me a freak, but I still miss it. I find myself leafing through year old issues, each month, opening them up as if they were just delivered to my doorstep. And I still find new things, and rooms to love. It's incredible how comprehensive each issue was in offering of the moment trends, great design ideas by great designers, and all of the sourcing in one place.

I googled domino magazine just the other day, to see if there might be any rumors about it resurfacing. I am sorry to report that I did not find even the slightest thread of gossip on that topic. I did find a couple of good resources though.

Flickr has a couple of groups that feature photographs from the magazine.
The Domino Magazine group also includes photos of rooms and things inspired by domino. The Domino Magazine Files only has photos from the magazine or of the covers.

You can buy back issues for as cheap as $3.59 to as much as $25 on amazon.com.

I really couldn't find much more, except for the old articles written about its closure. And what of domino's esteemed editor-in-chief, Deborah Needleman? What is she working on lately? She was quoted in a NY Times article by Maria Ricapito, about bar carts in December. Anything else?

I guess I'll just keep dreaming about its return. Until then, I'll do my usual perusing of the many great design blogs and reading the other design publications I get every month. Nothing can truly take its place though.

hunting for a bookcase

I am on the prowl for the perfect bookcase. One with character, the right proportions and of good quality. It seems that this must be a lot to ask for, maybe even too much, especially when working within a budget. At this point, I have searched tirelessly online through craigslist and big box retailers, as well as hit up local consignment and antique shops. While I have found tons and tons of what I don't want, I have also found several pieces that might do the job, but aren't exactly what I want.

The Verona bookcase from World Market. I actually like a lot of things about this bookshelf. It is sophisticated, a little on the rustic side, at 15 inches deep, would provide a few extra precious inches than others of its kind. I like the warm medium wood tone, and I think that a pair of them would flank the buffet very beautifully. My only concern is with the quality. I have put together furniture from World Market before, and had great difficulty. At $199 each, I could afford two, and really make the most of that long wall in the dining room.

Ikea's Markor series comes in at an even better price for $169 each. I like its simple lines, and the dark wood finish would provide a nice foil for the white buffet, and honey toned dining furniture. Its dimensions are a little less deep than what I want, but I think I could still make them work. My hang up with this one: its IKEA and everybody buys Ikea. However, I could make it my own, by covering the back panels with a fun wallpaper or fabric, an idea I credit to my sister. This would also add a splash of color and pattern.

And this beast, is one that we found at Greenwood's Cobblestone Used Furniture. It's solid oak, except for a few of the shelves, which are plywood. It's also enormous. At 65 inches wide, it would just fit in the dining room. The issue with this piece is the lack of versatility. The shelves are a fixed width, very similar to the one bookcase we already have, and although we would be able to get it up the wide stairway in this apartment, who knows if it would fit in a different space. Our lease here only lasts nine more months, and I don't want to spend $400 on a piece that we can't take with us when we go.

As I have talked to friends about locating the perfect bookcase, I have learned that this is not an uncommon dilemma. It's just that I am probably taking it too seriously. I do feel though, that I am at a point where I don't just want to buy for looks, I want to buy for keeps. So I guess its good to be choosy. I will keep looking and keep you posted.

I heart etsy. I wish that I had the time to create things to sell on etsy. For now, I will just ogle what others have the dedication and talent to craft. This is what I saw today. All of these handmade items come at great prices, and offer fun ways to liven up your interiors.

From Soap Studiooos in Brooklyn, the "Chair Pillow". An instant, cheeky punch for any bench or perhaps a desk chair... for just $35 plus shipping.

Mostly because in my new apartment, I am not allowed to paint the walls, I am drawn to the idea of the increasingly popular wall decal. Styleywalls has really sweet, but simple designs to choose from, and any of them would look great on my ginormous, blank living room wall.

I usually don't like candles that are pretending to be anything but candles, but look how cute these "Mad Men" inspired candles by Soy Chic Candles are. They are poured into cocktail glasses, and I have to admit, it would really add some sparkle to the bar during a martini party. Vodka on the rocks anyone? Only $8.

Lucy Snowe Photography had some beautiful color photography. Great compositions and interesting use of filters. I LOVE this Bird at the Beach print. Its small at 8x8, and its $25. I wish it was like 18x24, because I have the perfect frame for it!

I am looking forward to discovering more great accessories on etsy to decorate my new place with. I've got some specific art work and organizational items on am on the prowl for, and will let you know when I find them!

Holy moly,we brought way too much stuff!

The last month and a half has been an insane whirlwind...no, more like a freaking tornado. We made the decision and finalized plans to move on December 8th. We found an amazing renter for our house on December 11th. We celebrated Christmas with a train trip to Chicago to see family on December 18th. We arrived home on December 28th and immediately packed up the entire house, in between work, a sinus infection and ruptured eardrums, and moved into Seattle five days later. We made it through, but it was, as I said, insane.

This move has been the ultimate lesson in downsizing, organizing and being prepared. None of which I was able to do successfully, due to the time table we had to work with. At the last minute, I held a "design grab" and had my girlfriends over to go through the bunches and bunches of stuff that was clinging to the shelves in the basement. They took lots of the good items, which was very helpful, but there was still SO much. On the day of the move friends and relatives were taking multiple trips to St. Vincent de Paul to donate items. Crazy!

I had packed as much as I could in the few days before we left. I labeled the boxes as thoroughly as possible. I carefully considered what I could live without. I gave things away, threw things away and boxed items for storage (my generous boss' basement). I laid out furniture using a floor plan tool on my iphone, so I could really decide what would fit in the new space. But we still brought too much.

Did I mention that we were moving from a three bedroom house with a full basement (and I mean FULL), to a ONE bedroom apartment with ONE closet? Even if I had had ample time to take on this downsizing, I think I still would have overestimated what the new place could hold. Its just such a huge undertaking, and one we have not done in about 5 years. In the past, most of our moves had been to larger places, so we just filled them up.

So this move was difficult. We are still sifting through things and will most likely take more items to storage. Its a great feeling though, this clearing of the decks and relearning how to live without so much stuff. Although this move is somewhat temporary, these lessons will be permanent. I think that this change is very, very good.

The dining room plan should pretty much work out. We still need to find bookcases to flank the buffet/dresser. This weekend's mission!

a new abode

I'm having to grasp a new concept: we will be moving across the water to Seattle. While the thought of leaving our sweet and wonderful home behind and settling into a totally urban environment freaks me out a lot, I am doubly excited to decorate a new home. Several major elements must be determined before we can start our apartment search in earnest; the biggest of which is finding suitable renters for our house.

Because we will also be renting, I am certain that painting walls will not be an option, so the slate will quite literally be blank. Once we have our space picked out, we can start the process of determining which pieces to bring with us, and what will get left behind, or given to friends. This task seems sort of inconceivable at this moment in time. Of course, I can't help but imagine new furniture in our new space, along with the old. However, per the usual, the budget is going to be tight, actually, it's likely to be the tightest ever.

The good news is, I will be surrounded by all kinds of new design inspiration, and loads of great shopping will be within reach. I am very excited to explore each neighborhood and scout the best deals on the greatest home accessories, fabric and furniture. This move will afford me lots to blog about, no doubt. A few of the stores that I have visited only briefly, and loved, are about to see alot more of me!

Watson Kennedy
On First Ave, Watson Kennedy is a gorgeous smorgasbord of French trinkets, dishes, and stationary. While some items are a bit pricey, this is definitely the spot for those little affordable luxuries: fine soaps and lotions and pages of ancient sheet music. And, the beauty with which it is all displayed is sure to provide tons of FREE inspiration. One stop in here and I feel like I am instantly living the good life!

Anthroplogie
At Anthropologie, I sometimes find myself drooling. Again, I lust after the beautiful displays full of lots of things I can't afford, but there are always some treasures worth searching for in the clearance area. And, I do not want to wholly discourage, because many of their regularly priced tabletop items are also fair.

The Anne Bonny in the Capitol Hill neighborhood offers choice vintage artwork, furniture and knickknacks. In addition to finding several funky items to pine over, I experienced an amazing in-store music performance by J. Tillman of Fleet Foxes a while back. They have moved since then, but I am really looking forward to experiencing the new space.

I have never visited Red Ticking in Madison Valley, but have always wanted to. I plan on becoming familiar with their inventory of vintage French textiles, and finding ways to apply that beautifully simple yet sophisticated aesthetic in my new place.

And there will be sooooo much more to write about. I can't wait to share all of the details with you, and to report on the progress of simplifying before the move. On to new adventures in budget decorating... always!

subtle, warm, dramatic

The November issue of Country Living magazine holds a decorating treasure within its covers. I am in love with Caroline Scheeler's country home. As head buyer for Chicago's famous Jayson Home and Garden furniture and decor store, she has created a look that epitomizes refined rusticity. I was immediately drawn to her use of natural textures and artifacts and pleasantly surprised by the delicate drama inherent in her intuitive juxtaposition of dark and light. Who knew that neutral could go so bold?

Scheeler achieves this style by using weighty charcoal and rich chocolate as a backdrop, allowing lighter neutral pieces to pop. Or, as in her master bedroom and entryway, an application of the exact opposite combination. The sheer size and scale of the furniture and artwork she has chosen boosts the drama, while simultaneously filling the large rooms in her home with a sense of intimacy.

All white cabinetry and marble counter tops keep the kitchen's dark walls from dominating the space. It still manages to feel extremely light and airy.

The over sized scale and understated simplicity of this photo in the entryway, speaks to the decor's duality.

The hefty and intricate headboard seems to float against the pale grey-blue walls, keeping the master bedroom calm and cozy.

This collection of both reflective and textural objects is a miniature study of Scheeler's overall design aesthetic.

I am very inspired. Scheeler's home is equal parts gorgeous and livable. I think that these lessons in scale and contrast would be easy enough for any of us to apply in our own homes and on any budget. If you are ready for a decor change, instead of choosing a trendy paint color, I challenge you to consider staying neutral and making your design statement by pairing light and dark and picking size over quantity. The result might be something that is both timeless and bold. Thanks Caroline Scheeler!

the lamp shade

It turned out looking great. Just one little problem: can't seem to find the proper cord situation to use it as a pendant over the dining room table. I went to four places looking for what I needed. The closest I got was a pendant kit that I would have to wire a new socket into. Sorry, a little more advanced than I was imagining. The cord kit from IKEA that I had in mind wasn't quite right.

So, I will hunt for the right solution, but until then, here are some shots of the project. As of this moment, I have the shade on a floor lamp base

This is how the shade started out. It is really nice, just not the right colors for my house.

First I chose the pictures I wanted and started placing them. I tried using decoupage, but it would not stick to the fabric lining the inside of the shade. I ended up using masking tape, so its pretty unsophisticated, but you can't tell.

When I was done covering as much surface as I could, I was left with sort of jagged borders on the top and bottom.

I glued black grosgrain ribbon to conceal the fabric that was showing through and to make the shade look more polished.

Its sort of hard to get a photo of what the whole thing looks like finished, but trust me, it turned out pretty darn good.

And here, it casts a cozy glow on the wing chair that Basie loves to sleep in.

As further redemption that I did the right thing, look at what I found TODAY in the new issue of House Beautiful that arrived, TODAY! This is a pendant shade by Andrea Clare through The Future Perfect.

Not even joking. I saw this after I had already done it!

a crafty respite

I need a break from work. I am tired of being the dumping ground for all things in all departments and I need some time away to rejuvenate, remember the reasons why I love my job, and to reconnect with my creative and crafty side. Forget rest and relaxation. I crave creative stimulation, and the exhaustion derived from a tangible, visible, and physical accomplishment. So, this weekend I plan on tackling several decorating and crafting projects, hoping to complete at least half of them.

A glimpse of what I may or may not be doing:

Creating a drum pendant fixture for the dining room. Supplies: random lamp shade, old book of photos and a light kit from IKEA.

Painting the dining room a more neutral shade. I tired of the orange dreamscicle color.

Rearranging furniture, yet again. This time, it will be done with the intent of squeezing a drawing studio into the office.

Making a simple slipcover for my way-too-formal looking velvet covered ottoman.

Its a lot, I know. I might even end up doing other projects than those listed above, for as much as I try, I suck at planning. I usually end up either in over my head, or doing something half-assed at the last minute. No kidding. Nonetheless, I will try to stick to my goals and keep you abreast of any progress that I make! what i found at the b.i. auction

This year's Bainbridge Island Rotary auction (albeit over a month ago), was almost a turn off. I don't think I will ever get there at 8am again. Witnessing the rush to be the first to get the "best" stuff made me a little ill. Greedy, junk obsessed people where swarming the place. I was sort of ashamed to be one of them!

I'm not denying that there aren't enough great finds for everyone, but the mob scene made me rethink every purchase I made while I was there(do I really need this?). And don't let anyone ever tell you that getting there early gets you a better parking spot. I parked a good 1/2mile from the site!

That said, I still walked out of there with some really good stuff for rock bottom prices. Let me share with you what I brought home, and how I fit the items into my decor.

This black and white framed ink drawing of Seattle's Lake Union houseboat community found a place on the wall in the TV room. It was just $7!

I found a pair of Root's dinner pillar candles (.50 cents for both), in the pumpkin color and scent that I so predictably love. The gorgeous table runner featuring Amy butler fabrics that my mom quilted, acts as the perfect color foil.

This little hand-thrown pottery vase looks so at home amongst the other objects already accessorizing my bookcase. Can't beat the $3 price tag.

And... the crowning jewel: the oak drop leaf pedestal table I scored for $20. A piece like this has been on my wish list for a long time. I haven't decided whether or not to paint it or strip it and stain it, or to just leave it as it is. Very pleased with this one, I must admit.

Well, that's it. And I only spent $30.50! Pretty darn amazing. As for the event itself, I have not entirely ruled out attending the sale next year. I'll just plan on lingering over breakfast with my husband, taking my time watering the plants, and then making my way to Bainbridge after 10am, when the really good deals happen, and the grabby hands are too tired to fend me off!

coziness in june

This is a living room I have admired for a long time: Barbara Westbrook's design for Traditional Home's Atlanta Showhouse series. I liked it so much, a while back, I created a design board inspired by it for a contest on decor8.com. I did not win. Nonetheless, there were so many elements of that room that I craved in my own home. Let me share how I implemented them in my new living room arrangement.

I loved the combination of looks: casual and sophisticated, natural and structured. I moved my seating area to the center of the room to create a better dynamic for conversation and a vibe of pure coziness. I switched out my modern wool rug for a jute one with loads of natural texture.

The color palette in this area is now a little more subdued and earthy. The symmetry of the furniture's positioning reads as sophisticated.

I brought my bench in from the dining room, grouped it with a rug from the bedroom, and my bookcase to fashion an entry area. The pattern on the rug brings in a geometric element, much like the lines on the coffee table and throw pillows in the inspiration room.

I am really enjoying the feeling of two separate spaces being carved out of this one room, and yet its still inviting.

There are several other things I would love to do if I had the budget, but for now, this is just perfect. Making do with what I already have provides a certain level of satisfaction that seems to whet my appetite for change just enough... until next time!

the light bulb switches on

Okay, here I am. Ready to get back into this. My new goal: break the 100 postings mark. I am so close, its not even funny. This will be my 98th! I apologize for not having posted in such a long time. Its not for lack of decorating ideas though, seriously. My creative mind never really stops ticking, and most of the time, its actually pretty darn annoying.

The initial problem enters when I look at magazines and other blogs to get inspired, and instead, feel defeated. There is so much already being done out there, and I have been somewhat dormant for a while. Then, in lieu of rising to the occasion and putting my ideas in writing, or working them out in reality at home, I succumb to the notion that I have nothing to add. What's the point, so many other people are doing it and they do it so much better than me...Well, whatever, I am SO over the self pity party. THAT too, has been done before.

I want to start fresh, in a way. I often get frustrated because I just can't afford to complete every project and buy all the items on my wish list. But then: I have to remember: this is a blog ABOUT decorating on a budget. This is a blog about doing what you can with what you have, being inventive, and decorating with a LITTLE, rather than ALOT. I don't want to encourage you to just go out and buy what's trendy. No, no my friends, that would be way too easy. Besides, where is the creative expression in that? Nope, its not about making your home look exactly like a page in a design magazine, but a reflection of your personality and a shelter for your creature comforts, all the while communicating good design.

So, I am back with refocused energy. How can we ultimately create spaces that make us feel alive or relaxed or cozy or content, without spending big bucks? With a little vision and a random dose of bargain hunting karma, it can happen.

My challenge for you this week is this:
Find a picture in a magazine of a room you LOVE. Pinpoint the elements of this space that you admire. For example: light and airy, a good furniture arrangement,a unique color combination, interesting uses of texture and fabrics, a nice balance of modern and traditional, etc. Then look at your space with fresh eyes and get creative. What can you do to achieve these elements with what you already own, or by adding some inexpensive decorating finds?

I will do the same, and show you what I can come up with next week. This could be really fun assignment! Feel free to email me your ideas and I will be happy to provide input. Good luck!

Hooray! Spring and summer flea markets, garage sales and auctions are just around the bend. Next weekend's Kitsap Rotary Annual Garage Sale will help to jump start the season. One day only, Saturday, April 18th, you'll be able to prowl the Kitsap County Fairgrounds for trash and treasure. The sale starts at 8am and ends at 2:30 pm, so be sure and get there early to snatch up the good stuff. There won't be time for second thoughts! A silent auction will also take place on the grounds.

I know I wrote about this last year, but here are a couple of refresher tips to be properly prepared for treasure hunting:
1. Bring a list or notebook of measurements regarding project ideas. (Like wall dimensions for art work or a head board)
2. Bring your tape measure.
3. Paint chips and fabric swatches, just in case.
4. Your digital camera with photos of rooms needing certain pieces.
5. CASH!
6. Water and snacks to keep in the car if you plan on spending the better part of your day "sale-ing"!

Another side of the RAGS event to consider: donating things to be sold. You can drop off salable items on site at the pavilion on Monday April 13th starting at 1pm. This is a great way to get rid of clutter and be green! Check out their site for more details on donating.

There's no telling what might be found at these sales, so keep an open mind. I wish I could go next weekend, but I will be out of town! If anyone out there ends up going good luck, and send us pictures of your finds!

wanted: industrial organic chic

Hope lives in a classic Victorian apartment in San Francisco. She recently wrote to me about her small bathroom, and the design challenges it poses. She needs privacy from her neighbors, the sink is unsightly in more ways than one, and the space lacks the pulled together look she wants.

While Hope and her husband prefer different decorating styles, she used the words "industrial organic" to describe the aesthetic they both like. Splashes of earthy browns, warm oranges and leafy greens are found throughout their home. They favor contemporary over shabby chic. So, here's my input on how they can achieve the look they are after in their bathroom.

Let's start with a big design statement. The Amanda shower curtain by Bliss Living boasts a graphic but organic pattern in green and brown. Its modern punch provides a great counterpoint to the classic claw foot tub.

A design this large in scale tricks the eye and expands the space. Like a work of art, the functions as the room's focal point. The browns in the pattern will actually complement the hues on the sink, helping it recede, rather than stick out.

For the windows, I would suggest making a fabric panel the same width of the window, and half its total height. Hang this from a suspension type curtain rod at the middle of the window, like a cafe curtain. Use plain white cotton or linen, which will provide privacy, but still let some light in.

Make a similar panel to cover the whole open self situation above the sink. Keeping the look clean and tidy. Maybe you could even mount a large rectangular mirror on some hinges and make a vanity door?

Pottery Barn's organic bath linens come in a great pale green, lending a pop of color to the bathroom. The towels run from $8-$24. If you don't want to spend quite that much, I have found that Target offers a nice variety of soft greens in their various towel collections.

The storage cabinet that Hope currently uses looks and functions just fine, but reads more traditional, as oppposed to clean and contemporary.

Replacing it with one of West Elm's teak bath towers would add that organic element Hope and her husband like. The open shelves keep things breeezy.

Wire baskets by CB2 would help contain smaller items, with an industrial edge. Alternatively, scrounge antique shops for the authentic versions in different sizes.

To complete the updated and natural vibe in the bathroom, put a jute runner on the floor to tie all of the elements together. This chunky design by Pottery Barn fits the need perfectly.

These pieces work together to add warmth and edge to the bathroom. Good luck Hope! Let us know what you think!

serious about pickling

I am revisiting the idea of pickling my dining table. I am still seeing whitewashed and limed oak furniture, and have begun some more serious research on the processes themselves.

My second hand trestle style dining table.

For starters, I have yet to identify what type of wood my table is. I'd like to think I am not totally ignorant to the main differences of wood species, but I am stumped. It seems too soft to oak, but too hard to be pine. I am certain that its not mahogany or cherry, but could it be fir or beech? It is definitely not maple. I'll have to ask my father-in-law over for coffee soon, I think he could ID it if pressed.

Any ideas as to what type of wood this is?

I would like to get this settled before I choose a finish, as each technique performs differently depending on the wood type. Also, which process is easiest? Truth be told, I don't want to half-ass this one, but I am not looking for a serious upper body work out either.

Briwax sells their liming wax for only $15 online.

WhateverI choose, I will most likely need to strip the original finish off first. This is a step I am not looking forward to. I may even need to do some sanding and use a little wood-fill here and there. This table has seen better days and also has a couple of warped areas. The surface seems thirsty to absorb any drop of liquid- it tends to favor oily salad dressing and red wine. The grain has even taken on a glamorous sheen, thanks to the glitter from this year's artsy Christmas cards.

I defintiely have plenty of time to really plan this out, as it will be a stinky, outdoor project. I just wanted to get it in writing so you guys can hold me to it. Plus, I thought maybe someone out there has done it, and could offer some advice. Remember how pretty Pottery Barn's Shelton series was? I think my table has the potential to really come into its own with a similar finish.

tiny rental kitchen

The tiny kitchen in Tiffany's cozy apartment, for rent in Bremerton right now!

A friend of mine, Tiffany, just bought a cute little house in Bremerton with a newly refurbished basement apartment. It looks like a great, cozy little space to live, but Tiffany is having a hard time deciding how to make the tiny one-butt kitchen look more appealing to prospective renters.

There are nice, new appliances, and a new sink, counter top, and base cabinet, but it is still tiny. Just not much room for stashing cooking essentials and pantry basics. Well, what can be done? Conventional stock cabinetry is too cumbersome and limiting, so I had to think outside the box.

Mainly, I would suggest open shelves above the sink for storage of dishes and glass ware. Maybe you could provide some heavy duty baskets or bins the renter could use to hide pantry items. Mount the shelves about 15" above the counter top to allow for any small appliances. Perhaps you could fit some shelves in that little corner under the counter as well?

Speaking of appliances, a microwave would hog up most of that precious counter top. A free standing unit near an outlet, just outside of the kitchen might be an option. Otherwise, maybe there is way it can fit on the shelves above the sink?

For storage of pots and pans, I liked an idea I found on apartmenttherapy.com. A peg board with "S" hooks, ala Julia Child. You could even paint it a fun accent color to add some vibrancy to the space. Mount a narrow spice shelf right above the stove, and you have yourself a convenient little cooking station.

Great shelving options are available and cheap at IKEA.
The Utby kitchen island would lend storage and style, just outside the kitchen.

The Grundtal series has a variety of flexible accessories for the wall.

Lack shelves in green would standout against the neutral walls next to the window.

looking for a pendant

I am looking for a pendant light for my home office. About a year ago, we took down the non-operative and disgustingly ugly ceiling fan. For that same amount of time, there have been bare wires just dangling down. The abscence of a fixture has become one of those things I tend to forget about until I am prepping the house for company, and suddenly realize how ghetto it must look to outsiders.

A couple of things to consider when buying a light fixture:
Why am I lighting the space? How much light to I need?
A work space: you need the room to be well-lit in general.
A dining room: opt for mood lighting vs. task lighting.
A living room: your ceiling fixture(s) just adds to the general ambiance, while lamps and picutre lights illuminate certain zones in the room.
The kitchen: definitely go for concentrated task lighting.
Your bedroom: a pair of wall sconces might lend a flattering glow but enough provide light to read by.
The bath: overall lighting for the ceiling fixture, and concentrated light near the vanity.

Here are a couple of my faves for the office from my top online sources for style. Of course, I want to keep it as cheap as possible, but I am seeking a modern fixture to add punctuation to the space. Tell me what you think.

At $129, the highest price, is West Elm's faceted glass pendant. It lends a sort of rustic and refined element, but remains contemporary with the clear bare bulb. It only accomodates a 60 watt bulb and is about 14" in diameter.

Ikea's Leran pendant boasts nautural elements and a very modern shape. At 24" wide, it certainly would provide a great sense of scale to the office. It is $90 and can take up to 150 watts.

My most fave, and the least expensive option, is cb2's Eden Pendant. It is clean and simple, totally mod, and only $50. At about 20" in diameter, with a 100 watt capabilty, I think it would be the perfect size and provide ample illumination.

Any thougts on what look I should save up for? Here are a couple photos of my office so you can make a sound decision.

room with a nook

Okay, so I finally got to stretch my redesign wings again! We changed things around in the living room to make way for an heirloom Hendredon wing chair, and ended up with a happy little decorating surprise.

Upon graciously accepting the chair, I had resigned myself to the fact that something in the living room would have to go to the basement. The polka-dot Todd Oldham chair was the most fitting candidate. It is a great piece, but in the floor plan in my head, there was just no spot for it.

Although the wing chair was in desperate need of new upholstery, it was a really sturdy, classic piece. So I put on my budget decorating cap and schemed. The resolution: For Christmas, I asked for, and received from my mom, a pair of chocolate brown slipcovers, so I could also replace the one on my thrift store wing chair. Decorating note to self: free is always a good thing!

Last weekend, we began the redesign by de-accessorizing the space and removing artwork from the walls. Then the heavy lifting started, and so happened the happy accident. While simply setting the polka-dot chair down near the door preparing to move it downstairs, a delightful conversation nook began to take shape. And that is where the furniture stayed. The whole plan turned out to be much easier than planned, and not a sofa was moved!

The newly formed and cozy conversation nook. I brought in a rug from the TV room to ground it. The best thing about this arrangement is that the stereo is no longer the center of attention.

I added a couple of dark brown accent pillows, also from the TV room, to coordinate with the new slipcovers.

The bargain basement wing chair looks more regal in brown, but still inviting with the ottoman in front of it. The pillows on the love seat repeat the pumpkin color of the accent wall.

For now, the room feels pretty good. I like the new sitting area, and last night I was grateful we kept the extra chair. We were able to sit over ten people fairly comfortably. As you all know though, with decorating, no room is ever completely done. And, in my purely subjective opinion,that is a beautiful and wonderful thing!

revival home and garden

Seattle's Georgetown certainly has lots to offer, but in this budding, non-yuppie industrial neighborhood, Revival Home and Garden is a must-see. This shop offers traditional and trendy statement furniture pieces and accessories for almost any budget.

With so many wonderful ideas and delights for the design eye, and such a light happy feel about the store, Revival is sure to provide substantial retail therapy. A stop here needs to be at the top of your to do list this month. Heck, take an entire Saturday afternoon to enjoy what Georgetown has to offer. Start with a late breakfast at the edgy, but scrumptious Smartypants. Take a browse through the LP's and comics at Georgetown Records. Enjoy a, early afternoon beer at Jules Maes. Make sure to spend some time in Great Stuff where you will find an amazing array of quirky antiques and found objects, before you land at Revival, right next door.

Revival and Great Stuff were both written up in last November's Domino by their girl about town, Rita Konig. Konig was spot on with her Seattle neighborhood picks including such local establishments as Watson Kennedy, Red Ticking, and Maison Luxe (no longer on 1st Ave downtown, but online or in their Pioneer Square showroom). Even though Domino mag is closing, their website will still be up for a couple of weeks, giving its loyal readers a chance to pull down their deco files and absorb as much of its greatness as we can, before saying goodbye.

Speaking of Domino, I am not the only one sad to see it go. Through Revival's design blog , authored by owner Leah Steen, I found out about a blog created just for its mourners, appropriately titled, We Love Domino. I can only hope that perhaps this effort will successfully contribute to the world's refusal to let Domino go down! On that note, happy shopping and decorating to you this weekend. goodbye domino

I am so upset. Domino magazine is folding, in a week! It was just reported today, and I have to admit, its a little hard to digest. Having already lost my favorite magazine, Cottage Living, earlier this year, domino had taken its place at the top of the list. And now, it too, is suffering at the hands of a depressed economy.

What really gets me feeling defeated, is the fact that there is no talk of continuing their website. Why not? The costs to run a site are much less than that of producing a magazine. All I have to say is fooey... and, I am really disappointed.

So, I guess, in some strange way, that makes my mission to blog all the more pertinent. I still want to bring sound decorating advice to my readers, and I can do it for free, dang it! I am hopeful that some of domino's contributors will start their own projects too. I'll have to keep an ear to the ground for you.

In the mean time, here is a link to the NY Times article detailing the closure of one of the BEST decorating magazines of our time. So long domino, you will surely be missed by each and every one of your 800,000 loyal readers.

back into decorating

Its been over two months since my last post. Sad, but true. I am here tonight attempting to rededicate my efforts to my creative endeavors. My excuses for the long sabbatical are as follows: my full-time job wears me out, I don't seem to have as much time for decorating projects, I don't want to get online when I get home, we are budgeting big time, and trying to prioritize our earthly needs over our material wants. Who isn't dealing with these issues?

I'll tell you what though, I have missed blogging so very much. But above all, I have this unbelievable urge to redecorate my entire house. The passion I previously had time to explore and challenge every day when I wasn't working, has grown impatient and it tortures me. Every time I sit down to relax after work, my silly little brain rearranges every piece of furniture in the house to different rooms. While grocery shopping and doing laundry on the weekends, I imagine repainting the walls, and sewing new pillows. In my dreams, I demolish and rebuild my kitchen and bathroom and basement and front porch.

I would like to begin with what will soon be known as the great room swap. Chris and I are inheriting a couple of pieces of furniture, and the addition of these items will cause an upheaval in almost every room. I sort of have a master plan, which I won't bore you with now, as it is not set it stone. You'll just have to log on again to read about how the arrival of one wing chair changes the whole house. It is going to happen soon, I promise. Seriously, if I don't get to move some furniture around next weekend, I might just lose it!
