Big dog camp here at Best Friends Gaithersburg has a lot of look-a-likes! Today all three huskies joined us to play: Kenai, Frankie, and Springsteen! I bet their parents have a hard time figuring out who is who on our webcam!

Tribute to Petey

We were just informed that one of our customers, Petey, pictured with Amy in previous posts, passed away peacefully at his home this past Saturday night. He was fighting an auto immune disease. We will surely miss you Petey, we all loved you so much, especially Amy. We will always remember the good memories you gave us; rest in peace Petey.

We Will Miss You Patrick!

Patrick, a regular doggy daycamper, will be leaving us! :( His mom just informed us that she is relocating, so today is Patrick's last day. We will surely miss him!!

Patrick's favorite activities include barking, barking, and more barking. You can hear him coming from a mile away, and he is always barking on the way out; camp is going to be a lot more quiet now.

We had so much fun with you Patrick, we will miss you, and we wish you the best of luck! Come visit anytime!

Today our spotlight guest is "Petey," a handsome 5 year old pit bull that has been coming to stay with us for years. Not to say we have favorites here, but Amy, the assistant manager, certainly enjoys when Petey visits! She likes to bring him up to the lobby where he showcases all of his tricks, including roll over. He also likes to shower her with kisses everytime he comes...although Amy has to wash her face afterwards, she doesnt mind!

Dog Days of Summer

It has been in the high 90's this past week in Gaithersburg, with the humidity soaring! Here are a few tips on keeping your pets cool during this scorcher from thetelegraph.com:

Tips to keep animals safe in the heat:

- Make sure pets have access to both water and shade if outside. Put out a children's pool for the pet to keep cool in.

- Keep in well-ventilated areas inside.

- Never leave a pet in a car. Even with windows cracked, the animal may become overheated in just a few minutes.

- The first signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion are excessive panting, hyper-salivation, collapse, vomiting, dizziness or disorientation. If you see any of these symptoms, try cooling your pet with a hose or in a bathtub and call your veterinarian immediately.

- If you detect red speckles along the gumline or on the abdomen, your pet is suffering from petichae. Take the animal to a clinic immediately.

- Plan for shorter walks during the heat of the day, reserving longer strolls for either earlier in the morning or later in the evening.

- Avoid walking your pet on concrete or asphalt; this will just make them hotter.

- Keep coats trimmed and groomed.

- Encourage your pets to take it easy.

- Above all, use common sense; if you are hot, so is your pet.

Kitten for Adoption!

This precious little kitten was found at a construction site all by herself! So now the assistant manager, Amy, has taken her in and is currently fostering her. Her name is Penny, she is about 4 weeks old, grey and white female; we think she is going to have medium - long hair. She is just adorable and the BFPC staff just loves her! She is a purring machine - since she was 3 weeks old she sounds like a motor boat. We are hoping she keeps her blue eyes. She enjoys wrestling with Amy's chihuahua Smudge. Penny will need a forever home in about four weeks so contact the center and ask for Amy for more information. 301-926-6005

Best Friends Pet Care Donates Dog Hair to a Good Cause!

A non profit organization called Matter of Trust is collecting donations of clean hair and fur of all kinds to clean up the oil in the ocean. Hair is hydrophobic which means it repels water, it is also great for absorbing oil (greasy hair means that hair collects oil). So Matter of Trust has volunteers making devices called hair mats and hair booms out of recycled hair and nylons- which are then placed in the water to soak up the oil.

Schedule your dog for a grooming today. Best Friends Pet Care will be donating all hair clippings to Matter of Trust to assist in the Oil Spill clean up. Give us a call at 301-926-6005 and start saving the world!

Welcome to Camp Dilly and Tooey!

Picadilly, aka Dilly is a four year old female english bulldog that comes in with her sister, Ratatoullie, aka Tooey, who is a year and a half year old french bulldog.

These girls are total opposites! Tooey runs around playing chase with everyone, always has a ball in her mouth, and is always on the go. Dilly is more quiet, she is a little shy and for now she likes to observe everyone and sit on the counselor's lap (yes, she thinks she is a lap dog)

We are so glad Dilly and Tooey are part of our small dog camp crew! Dilly makes us laugh the way she slinks around the camp room and Tooey always has a smile on her face.

Beau Loves Visiting!

Beau, a one year old bengal, comes to stay with us when his parents go out of town. He is SO much fun to play with! His pastimes include chasing the mouse on the string, lounging around on his back, and eating.

Beau had a photo shoot in Meow Town, and we were able to get some great action shots of him chasing his mouse. His beautiful markings are characteristc of the breed; we are getting spoiled enjoying this beautiful cat all day long!
