If you are looking for a new email address, or have just started out on the internet and want a free email account to get started, there are many providers to choose from. Whilst the big names such as Yahoo Mail and Microsoft's Hotmail are probably the best known, and Google's Gmail the most comprehensive, how should you decide on the best account to choose? If you follow the main points below before you choose your new account you will have all of the features you need, and will not have to pay for an upgrade at a later date or have the hassle of changing email accounts.

Security, Spam and Virus Protection

Spam is a serious issue, and if you are just starting out on the internet you may be caught out. Spam emails, or unsolicited junk emails are rife. They can be an annoyance at best, but can result in missed genuine emails, phishing scams and can transmit viruses in the worst cases. Most of the free email account providers have spam filtering, but be sure to check before signing up. Hotmail used to be a bit hit and miss, although has improved considerably recently and rarely let's spam messages slip through the net. Gmail, Yahoo and GMX Mail also offering good spam and virus filtering as part of the package provided.

POP / IMAP Access

If you only ever access your email from a web browser such as Internet Explorer of Firefox then POP access will not be of much concern. Speed

For quick access to emails you should choose an ultra lightweight and simple service. Fastmail, as the name suggests does exactly that, and is one of the quickest and easiest to use. Inbox.com and My Way Mail are also ultra fast services, but speed often comes at a price, and the fastest free email accounts often lack the full range of features.

Usernames & Domain names

Once you have narrowed down the selection based on your requirements, you can then have fun choosing the best domain name. There are some great names to choose from which are easy to remember. Your decision may be based on the availability of user names.

Chances are that your name will be taken on Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo, but look at some of the less well known domains and you may still be able to get your name without having to add numbers to it.
