Full Throttle

When he first began playing with the band Jackyl, Jessie James Dupree was known more for his chainsaw antics on stage than he was for his lead singing and guitar playing. But after the release of his newest solo project, "Rev it Up and Go Go" people soon realized that there was a lot more to this southern-fried rocker than his ability to use power tools. These days, Dupree continues to play with Jackyl and Dixie Inc but is also headed to television. Dupree and truTV are heading back to Sturgis, SD to spend some time at the Full Throttle Saloon. The show is set to launch Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 10 p.m.

Though he’s been performing music for over 30 years, most people on know him from his roles in hit films like Terms of Endearment, Something Wild, The Hours and Dumb & Dumber. Jeff joined us in the studio a few years ago year when he released his album, Grandfather's Hat, and played a few of his favorite cuts. Like Father, Like Son

At the age of only five, Jason Bonham (son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham) could play the drums, at least a scaled-down set of them, with skill and by the age of 17 he was a already a member of the band Air Race and was signed by Atlantic Records. John Bonham died in 1980, but Jason, who has marked a few places in music history himself, has stepped in from time to time to help keep his father's memory alive. In 1988, Jason took his father's spot in the televised, first-ever Led Zeppelin reunion at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, which included Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. Later than year. he went on to tour with Page and recorded the album Outrider with him. Now Bonham is once again honoring his legendary late father with the "Led Zeppelin Experience" tour.

Joe Goes Solo

Growing up in Sheffield, UK, Joe Elliott was caught by the music of the late 60s/early 70s 'glam' bands such as T.Rex, Mott The Hoople and (David Bowie's) Ziggy Stardust. While spending his time listening to that music Joe dreamt of one day playing as a member of his imaginary band Deaf Leopard. This dream came true when he joined the band Atomic Mass, originally formed by Rick Savage and Pete Willis. Oddly enough, the band renamed themselves Def Leppard based on Joe's dream. Miss America

Jared Weeks and Jason Null formed the band Saving Abel while living in their small hometown of Corinth, Mississippi back in 2004. They met when Weeks, who was in a band, was playing guitar at his best friend's house, when Null, who was in a rival local group, walked in to rehearse with his band. Within days of that meeting, Null and Weeks were writing and honing the intimate writing style that now defines Saving Abel. The Band gradually came together in the final electric lineup of guitarist Scott Bartlett, bassist Eric Taylor, and drummer Blake Dixon, and the band paid its dues both onstage and off. After shopping their indie EP for almost a year, a copy of 'Addicted' found its way into the hands or the right people, and the band was signed the next day. Guitarist and musician Jim Peterik was one of the founders the band Survivor, and co-wrote many of their platinum hits including The Eye Of The Tiger, The Search Is Over. Along with writing many of .38 Special's hits, Jim has also written with Lynyrd Skynyrd, REO, Sammy Hagar, and The Doobie Brothers among others. Currently, Jim is touring with a band that's been together for nearly four decades, The Ides of March. They all grew up within a three mile radius of one-another, and have become so big in their home city, Berwyn, Illinois is renaming the street in front of our High School "Ides Of March Way." Jonny Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve, after his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band, one of the few blues bands in Fargo, North Dakota. Lang soon started taking guitar lessons from Ted Larsen, the Bad Medicine Blues Band's guitar player. Several months after Lang began, he joined the Bad Medicine Blues Band, which was then renamed Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang. In more than ten years on the road, Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck and Sting. Phil Collen may not have been the original guitarist for mega-rock band Def Leppard, but having been the lead guitarist and songwriter since the bands commercial breakthrough album Pyromania in 1983, he's more than made his mark. Growing up in a family that was rich in both music and the military, it was no surprise when Shawn Mullins went headfirst into both. While traveling as part of the Army reserves, Mullins performed his songs at every venue he could. And though his time with the military soon came to an end, his love of playing and working as a road musician didn’t. In the early 90’s, Mullins decided to start his own label and began recording albums. After releasing seven independent efforts, Shawn recorded Soul’s Core, which included the song Lullaby, which caught the ear of a radio programmer in Mullins' hometown. Lullaby soon was topping the music charts and was even nominated for a Grammy. The album also enjoyed continued success, going platinum in the U.S. and Australia. Since then, Mullins has gone on to collaborate with a number of other musicians and has released four more studio albums, including his new project, Honeydew.

The Story of Mudcrutch

When Page reunited Led Zeppelin and Clapton went back to Cream it made sense, but when Tom Petty announced he was reforming a band named Mudcrutch, nobody knew what to think, because for the most part nobody had ever heard of them. Mudcrutch had broken up over 30 years ago, had never recorded an album and didn't release any hit singles, so there wasn't much to remember about them. But Petty remembered, and wanted to revisit that era in his musical career, so he made a few phone calls to a couple of Heartbreakers (Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench) and then two a few guys he hadn't seen in years (Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon) and got the band back together. Then, after a few short months, Mudcrutch was reborn and recording the album they'd always wanted.

Lady Willpower, It's Now or Never

For a few weeks now, Chick McGee has been randomly playing the songLady Willpower whenever he’s felt like it, which in turn has led to a number of listeners writing in wanting to know who sang that familiar song. We’ll, we’re happy to remind you that this tune was actually a huge hit by one of the biggest bands of the sixties, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Band. For those who may not remember, or who weren’t alive back then, Puckett garnered six consecutive gold records in the late sixties, and the Union Gap Band was the top selling band of 1968. Some of their other hits include Young Girl, Woman Woman, This Girl is a Woman Now and Over You. Though the Union Gap Band was disbanded in the mid seventies, Gary Puckett has continues to perform around the world. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get him to perform a live version of Lady Willpower when he joins us in the studio on Tuesday.

Traveling & Unraveling

You wouldn’t think a guy that writes songs like Dog Doo Blues #48and I Killed Walter Matthau would be the same guy who discovered folk princess Jewel, but singer/songwriter Steve Poltz is both. Poltz, the co-author of Jewel’s smash hit single You Were Meant For Me, began his music career as a member of the The Rugburns, but after releasing three albums with the group, Steve decided it was time to pursue a solo career. Not one to conform to a single genre, Poltz writes songs that cover the entire musical spectrum. He can sing a beautiful folk tune then turn around and sing a number of 46-second songs that he’d used as outgoing messages on his answering machine (such as the very popular, Sugar Booger). Poltz has recorded six solo albums including his most recent release, Traveling. This CD also has a companion record, Unraveling, but you're going to have to see him on tour to get it

It's a Great Day!

You know it is going to be a great day when Paul Thorn is scheduled to be on the BOB&TOM show. Thorn's an accomplished painter and singer/songwriter who also happens to be an ex-boxer, which means when he sings about whooping somebody's ass, he knows exactly what he's talking about. Though "It's a Great Day" has become a classic and is the "Stairway to Heaven" of Thorn's musical library, most of his tunes are much softer and soulful; many of which can be found on his new album Pimps and Preachers. Listen to Paul Thorn’s gospel inspired music and you'll end up either laughing or crying by the end of the song, maybe even a little of both. Paul Thorn fought middleweight Champ Roberto Duran on national television, has written songs with John Bon Jovi and Timothy B. Schmidt of the Eagles and lists skydiving as one of his favorite hobbies.

Bowling For Soup

Though they can’t bowl, and soup is rarely on their menu, the drunken power-rock band Bowling For Soup have been riding a wave of success since earning their first Grammy nomination in 2003. Bowling Four Soup, or BFS for short, began back in Texas when guitarist Christ Burney and bassist Wrik Chandler formed a band that would frequently (and conveniently) play at a coffee shop owned by Burney. As fate would have it, there was another band that often performed there that just happened to include BFS drummer Gary Wiseman and lead singer Jaret Reddick. Luckily for all of them, their two bands dissolved at the same time, and they decided to team up to form one kick-ass group. They do admit that the only reason they originally teamed up was so they could party and drink beer, it wasn’t long before they were signed to a label and had a number of hit songs playing all over the country including the Grammy nominated “Girl All the Bad Guys Want” and “1985.” Their new album, Sorry For Partyin', is now for sale and recently hit the top 10 chart on iTunes.

Live Again

Fans of The Doors will be blown away by the crisp sound found in the all new six-CD box-set, Live in New York. This set contains the final four shows played in New York City, just before the release of Morrison Hotel. Recorded January 17 and 18, 1970, these concerts find Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger, and Ray Manzarek locked in tight as they deliver smoking takes on soon-to-be-classics from their forthcoming album, including “Roadhouse Blues,” “Peace Frog,” “Ship Of Fools,” and “Maggie M’Gill.” The shows also feature a number of driving blues covers, such as Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “Little Red Rooster,” and John Lee Hooker’s “Crawling King Snake.” In other news Rhino records also recently released 180-gram vinyl versions of all six Doors studio albums. Lovely Creatures

Born in Ypsilanti, MI, Bob Schneider moved to Germany at the age of two so that his father could study opera. It was there that his father first taught him to play the guitar. He moved back to the states to attend college at the University of Texas El Paso. While in Texas, Schneider found more success on the music scene than he did in college, and soon left to pursue that career full time. He went on to front a number of Austin’s most popular bands before venturing out on his own solo career. Since then this eclectic artist has released a number of solo albums that encompass funk, country, rock and folk, including his newest CDs Lovely Creatures and Live at the Paramount Theatre.

The New York Dolls

Since the early 70s, the New York Dolls have been a polarizing and trend setting force but most of all they’ve rocked. The Dolls helped usher in the punk rock and glam-rock eras of music in the early 80’s becoming famous for their look as much as for their music. Though they took a few years off, the band has recently come back together to release a new album, Cause I Sez So, and to head back out on tour. Very few musicians ever get to play with their idols, but guitar virtuoso Nils Lofgren was doing just that at age 17 when he joined Neil Young's band on his certified platinum After the Gold Rush album. From that early start Nils has since played with Ringo Starr's All-Star Band, was the Musical Director for the Cable Ace Awards, and is the guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band (currently out on tour). Though Nils keeps busy, he still finds time to teach wannabe rockers how to play their own ax with his Online Guitar School. Stephen Lynch has a knack for making people in his audience laugh and squirm at the same time. We credit this phenomenon to the unusually dark and slightly demented songs he plays on stage including ones about losing a gerbil in a very private place, having only one testicle, being Jesus' partying brother or wanting to sleep with his girlfriend’s sister. Though disturbing, Lynch’s songs are all in good fun and often very beautiful… but make sure you catch them the first time around, because who knows if we’ll ever be allowed to play them on the air again. Unconventional Approach

Lindsay Mac has been on the front cover of the Boston Globe and the cover of Strings magazine. She has also been on the cover of the Globe's Weekend section and featured in other publications such as The New York Times’ About.com, Northeast Performer, and the largest Spanish-language music magazine, Musico Pro.

Lindsay was born in Iowa to bohemian, party-hungry parents who likely fed her pork tenderloin and Midwest microbrews for breakfast. This explains a lot.

She was classically trained starting at the age of six in church choir and formal training in piano and cello came shortly thereafter. After attending a public high school and, in the summer, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Lindsay enrolled in Dartmouth College to study what else but medicine.

She took advantage of the College's foreign study opportunities and moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music and then briefly left Dartmouth to study at The San Francisco Conservatory as well as to be a professional ski patroller in Utah and bike messenger.

She returned to Dartmouth, graduated, and starting experimenting with her music while living in a cabin heated by a wood stove. It is there that she found her voice and her unique style was born. Fearing the cello might be used for kindling, she enrolled in Berklee College of Music and shortly thereafter began touring full-time. The rest is yet to come.

Not much is known about the individual men who make up the kooky, funky, R&B band known as Here Come the Mummies. For the most part this is due to their constantly wearing mummy attire while on stage, and having never revealed their true identities. But you don’t have to know who they are to enjoy their unique brand of rocking music and tongue-in-cheek sense of humor with songs like "Pants," "Attack of the Wiener Man", and "It's All About the Sugar." The band is typically comprised of ten mummified members who together have released four albums. They are also rumored to have a number of Grammy awards between them.

Derek Trucks got his first guitar at age 9, had his first paying gig at age 11 and formed his first band at age 12; you could say people knew from an early age that he was destined to make a career out of music. In 1999, Derek was asked to join the Allman Brothers Band (his childhood icons), taking over slide guitar duty. But even during this stint, he never abandoned the Derek Trucks Band, a group that had been together since ‘95. Though artists have been added to the group over the years the goal has remained the same, to assemble a group of musicians that share a passion for improvisation and musical exploration, and to develop a special musical unity by performing together for an extended period of time. You wouldn’t know it from listening to Warren Haynes play, but there was a time when he was much more into the Motown sound than guitar. It was only after being turned onto Eric Clapton by his older brothers that he picked up the six-string. Not long after discovering the pleasures of guitar playing, Warren found himself performing at local pizza parlors that had been converted into nightclubs. Haynes would go on to make a lot of friends in the industry, which led to him joining the Allman Brothers for eight very good years and five even better albums. Turns out that playing for just one band just isn’t enough for Mr. Haynes who went on to found the group Gov’t Mule, as well as release a few solo albums. Warren is currently a member of the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends in addition to being the lead guitarist and vocalist for Gov’t Mule. Warren Haynes recently released a new live solo project titled Live at Bonnaroo and is currently out on tour with Gov't Mule.

Aerosmith and ZZ Top, Together At Last!

Since the early 70’s, Aerosmith has been solidifying itself as one of rock ‘n rolls most legendary bands. Fans of Iron Maiden are lining up outside theaters around the country in anticipation of the release of their new film Flight 666. The film gives fans a first hand look at what it's like behind the scenes, following the band during the first leg of their Somewhere Back in Time tour. Among the musician's featured in the film is Iron Maiden drummer, Nicko McBrain. McBrain is often referred to as the true entertainer of the group with his high energy style and crazy drum kits. For those that can't catch the film in theaters, Flight 666 will be released on DVD May 25th.

FACTOID - Along with music, Nicko McBrain is also an avid golfer.

The Devils You Know

In 2007, the execs at Rhino Records asked Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice to reunite and record a couple of tracks for a Black Sabbath greatest hits album. The foursome had a such a great time doing this, they decided to head out on tour under the name Heaven and Hell, a tribute to the title of their first LP. When the tour came to a close, the group decided they still had more music left in them and wanted to prove to their fans that they could produce new music that was just as good as their classic tunes. With that in mind, they and headed back to the recording studio to begin writing their first new album in 17 years. This new project, The Devil You Know, goes on sale Tuesday, April 28th.

Not one to slow down, Hay is constantly touring the country, proving he will always be a man at work.

Some people have enough trouble as a teacher keeping up with elementary school kids, but Dennis DeYoung was able to both teach music and help create one of the biggest rock bands of all time, STYX. Young not only provided vocals and keyboard for the band, he also brought to life some of the bands biggest hits including "Babe," "Lady," "Come Sail Away", and. "Mr. Roboto". Outside of STYX, DeYoung has also had a successful solo career. He’s also performed along with a full symphony orchestra for a PBS special, wrote the music for the musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and recently released the new CD, 100 Years from Now.

Fans of the legendary British rock band Genesis had better get their credit cards ready because the long-awaited box set Genesis Live 1973-2007 is finally here. The set gathers all four live albums recorded by the group from 1973 to 1992. It features brand new stereo mixes of the albums, including the highly anticipated re-release of Live At The Rainbow 1973 which is only available with this collection. Bassist and Guitarist Mike Rutherford will join us on the phone to talk about this ground-breaking project that will have Genesis fans dating all the way back to the Peter Gabriel years rejoicing, even if they can't dance. Mike Rutherford is one founders of Genesis, and one of only two constant members of the band. He was also the frontman of the band Mike + the Mechanics.

Grammy Award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader Mark Knopfler
Warner Bros. Records is set to release Mark Knopfler’s new recording Get Lucky on Tuesday, September 15. This is the sixth solo studio album from the legendary musician & was recorded at his award-winning British Grove Studios in west London and co-produced with longtime cohorts Chuck Ainlay and Guy Fletcher.
His group, Dire Straits, was formed in London in 1977 and went on to become an international success after the release of its debut album in 1978.
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer/songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Walk of Life.” He has produced records for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman.
Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Get Lucky was co-produced with longtime collaborators, engineer Chuck Ainlay and keyboardist Guy Fletcher and featured Richard Bennett, Danny Cummings, John McCusker, Matt Rollings and Glenn Worf.
All proceeds from the single “Remembrance Day” will go toward The Poppy Appeal, which supports The Royal British Legion, a U.K. charity providing support to the serving and ex-service community and their dependents.

It has been 20 years since guitar legend Ace Frehley last put out a solo album, but for his fans, the wait is over, his new project, Anomaly will go on sale September 15th. Frehley, also known as the Starman, was one of the original members, and the lead guitarist of the rock band KISS. He was a member of the band until parting company with them in 1982. But that would not be the end of his face painting days as he would rejoin the band for their reunion tour in 1996 and stay with them until 2002. Since then, Frehley primarily focused on performing live, but that’s all about to change with Anomaly.

In 1984, the world was introduced to the heavy metal rock band Spinal Tap in the Rob Reiner mocumentary film This is Spinal Tap. The movie has not only become one of the most beloved comedies of all time, the music has taken on a life of it’s own. So much so that actors Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer who portrayed David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls respectively have occasionally headed out on tour to perform as Spinal Tap. This summer, the three band members decided to head out again, only this time, they were going to do it as themselves as opposed to their heavy metal alter egos. In their new project Unwigged and Unplugged, Guest, McKean and Shearer perform the songs of Spinal Tap and The Folksmen (from A Mighty Wind) as themselves. Actor Harry Shearer is also famous for the many residents of Springfield he portrays on “The Simpsons” including Principal Skinner, Mr. Burns, Mr. Smithers and Kent Brockman. He's was also a writer and a star of “Saturday Night Live,” and was featured in the films A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, The Truman Show and Godzilla. And if that's not enough, he's also the best selling author of three books and released a solo music project titled Songs Pointed and Pointless.

For many, YouTube fame comes from making an ass out of yourself, just ask the Star Wars Kid or Chris Crocker, but for Bo Burnham internet stardom came from his funny, politically incorrect and pun-filled musical videos. Originally recording these tunes in his bedroom for the enjoyment of family and friends, Bo's YouTube videos have now become an internet phenomenon, having been viewed over 20 million times. Bo Burnham is now expanding his career beyond the constraints of YouTube. Along with touring the country, he's starred in his own Comedy Central Presents special and he released his third album, Words Words Words, available now.

Peter Frampton Calls Live

Peter Frampton has played guitar since the age of 11. Back in those days, he would practice in his school cafeteria alongside a classmate who also shared an interest in music, David Bowie. While both of these men would go their separate ways at early ages, they would come back together and tour in the mid 80's. Decades before this twist of irony, Frampton was creating his own unique style while playing with the band Humble Pie. He called it a blend of jazzy lyrics over a rockin' blues based band, everyone else just said they liked it. This was quite a change for the teenybopper Frampton who was named "Face of 1968" by the UK press. Frampton would put out five albums with Humble Pie before striking out on his own. It was then that Frampton enjoyed monstrous success with his double live album Frampton Comes Alive, which featured songs such as "Show Me the Way," and "Baby I Love Your Way." It also earned Rolling Stones "Artist of the Year," in '79. His popularity continues to grow today with more live and studio albums, along with sold out concert tours that included everything from huge venues to small, intimate locations. These days, not only does he have his own signature Peter Frampton Les Paul Guitar series, he's released an anthology album, as well as a brand new project Thank You Mr. Churchillwhich he worked on with his son Julian Frampton.

It’s been almost five years since singer/songwriter/storyteller Jill Sobule joined us in the studio. For those who can’t remember that far back, she’s the one who sings the humorous song about the male porn star, "Money Shot." Sobule is one of those rare musicians whose clever lyrics are surrounded by melodies that just plain sneak up on you, and then run through your head for weeks afterward. Though Jill often uses her music to tell amusing stories, don’t be fooled, Jill can rock the house when she drops her acoustic ax and goes electric. Comedian Sean Morey has been a friend of the BOB&TOM show for longer than we can remember and his songs have been popping up on our albums since the 80's. But we're not the only ones that enjoy his music; he recently placed first and third in the comedy division of the International Songwriting Contest with his tunes "Dear Santa" and "The A.D.D. Song." Along with those two favorites, Morey is famous for his other tunes "The Man Song," "The Woman Song," "The Man That Doesn't Exist" and "Dickin' Around at Work."

Songs From the Past

Known as the first true 'Super Group,' Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN) has been carving out their musical legacy since coming together in 1969. The guys first joined forces after parting ways with their original bands; Crosby from The Byrds , Stills from Buffalo Springfield and Nash from The Hollies. From its inception, the goal of CSN was to form a group that had it's own unique sound, but would also allow the guys the flexibility to pursue solo projects and the ability to play with other bands. It seems to have worked as CSN is still relevant, popular and touring the world today. And though they continue to look toward the future, they haven't forgotten their past which is why their recent album is a look back at their origins. Demos features 12 previously unreleased demo tracks from 1968-1971, including original versions of songs that would later define them as a band.

This summer is no different as they pair up with Def Leppard on a 40 city national tour that is sure to be one of the hottest shows of the year. Cheap Trick has more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks and 40 Gold and Platinum album awards under their belts, but they aren't slowing down at all. In fact, they just released a brand new CD and LP titled The Latest.

Ukulele Virtuoso

Those that think all ukulele music sounds the same have never heard Jake Shimabukuro play. From the time he was four years old, Shimabukuro has been hooked on the uke, learning how to play jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock on his tiny four-stringed, two-octave instrument. Though Mac McAnally is best known as the guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, he's had quite a career outside of Margaritaville. He's released 11 albums of his own (including the new project Down By the River), written multiple #1 country hits (as well as a few that made their way onto the pop charts) and has lent his guitar skills to a number of famous artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Vince Gill and Reba McEntire. More than a musician, Mac is also an excellent storyteller. He enjoys mixing both of those crafts into every one of his live performances, proving that behind every good song is an even better story.

Guitar Guy

After joining his first band at the age of 10, and having his first hit song with Sam The Sham and the Pharos (Wooly Bully), at the age of 16, Brian Haner thought he’d just punched his ticket to a life of success and stardom. But after moving out to Nashville to record a few solo projects, he realized that things weren’t always so easy. It was during this time he discovered that his songs were seemed to be enjoyed more when he played them as comedies. All of a sudden people were buying his albums, only now they were doing so hoping to laugh. In 2006, Haner switched gears and became a full-time comedian, eventually teaming up and touring out with Jeff Dunham. Recently Brian released a brand new album, Cougar Bait, which is available now.
