I got a bit distracted today but I was wanting to make a point about how we are interconnected - and that is from the "good news bad news" department. Some things others do we are stuck cleaning up. It's not right but is, is. I find the faster I can process my anger, the faster I can get to "OK now what can be done about it?" Living on an island there are all kinds of examples of where we overlap with each other and are subject to side effects of each other. Just as in the movie I saw last weekend, Flash of Genius. The Ford of today is a very different company, culture-wise, than 30 years ago, nonetheless the current management is responsible for running the show.

Fish is a longtime staple in the diet here in Hawaii, and you've probably noticed people fishing in the background of many Beach Walks episodes. Yet at the same time fish populations are declining from othe large scale commercial operations, that seem to be impervious to the effects of their behavior. If you want to eat fish but don't know which ones are not threatened, you can now text "FISH" to 30644 right from your phone to find out. This is so convenient - you can do it while perusing a menu.

A while back we added a "plug-in" to thsi site, that shows the photo or avatar for each commenter, if you have created an account for yourself at www.gravatar.com. I was recently invited to be one of 44 women in technology around the world who on August 11th, documented their day. The goal, organized by Sonja Bernhardt, was to illustrate women in every time zone with diverse technology careers so as to inspire young women to choose tech as a career path. Visit the web site where you can download PDF versions of the women in each region, and a formal book is being published as well. The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the awarding of a technology patent to Hedy Lamarr. Most of us know her as an actress, but she also helped invent technology that later was the basis of wifi!

I read a study showing that people who were paid to do a task over time lost interest in the task. It's easy to generalize about money from that, but also in play is the idea of external motivation vs. internal motivation. Some people love money and are highly motivated to get more of it. (You can find them on Wall Street LOL.) Others, not so much. What about you, do you like money?

This past year the volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has been very active. Periodically we have "vog" - a combination of volcanic ash and fog. The skies are gray, and the air quality is "suspect." I recently read a ~~state~~ federal health official stating: We really don't know what the health effects might be. I really admired Rich Nickle for speaking the truth in that way. We are all so smart these days, and quick to blame or feel entitled, when really, there is far more unknown than known. And after today's stock market experience, it seems as relevant as ever to "cultivate comfort with uncertainty" while paying attention to your own specific requirements. Some people (children and the elderly in particular) tend to be more sensitive to the vog. Your mileage may vary. The truly brave can check out this very vintage Beach Walk #66.

We saw my friend Paul on the beach today - he was smartly walking instead of swimming due to the bloom of Portuguese Man-o-war (tiny jellyfish) in the bay (there's a picture of one inside this episode). Me? I swim regardless, and curiously enough was planning to talk about how "bad" my arm looks from a sting a few days before. I wanted to show it to you so you could employ mind over matter to unplug the automatic responses we have to wounds and ugliness. Talking about change is one thing, but actually having opportunities to make change in our neurons is another. Not to worry; it will be all gone in a few days. Let that weigh in as you look at my spotted arm.

One of the big myths floating around is that a person's position or title is comparable to their competence. Not always true! Like me, I am sure you can think of examples. Many choices in life really do boil down to personal preferences. "Who you know" really does matter, and that is not always a bad thing. This turned out to be relevant in a discussion I was having with several other women speakers. We are all going to be presenting at BlogWorldExpo next week, where there keynote speakers are all white male. It's an old issue, but one that is not all that easy to address. It is a combination of micro and macro energies in play. We have ideals we want to play out in the macro yet change happens in the micro of person to person relationships.

The majority of the time decision-makers go with the known quantity. This is seen by some as pandering by others as smart business to fill seats. Attendees too say they want something new, but are attracted to the known and familiar too. BlogHer is a women's blogging conference, and founder Elisa Camahort prides herself in pro-attractively seeking out new voices for each event. And BlogHer is growing and growing - priving that this too is a viable business model.

Are you more attracted to familiar big names or the chance to help discover new talent?

I often think of myself as one of those explorers. Sometimes though, I feel pressure to have to always be on the front line. Seems the more I travel the easier it is for me to get cranky. Today, a RT fare from HNL to DTW to HNL cost $700 but a one-way fare cost $1100! That is not about fuel prices...

Anyway, I am learning to just pull my aura in and focus on myself, in the midst of the madding crowds (and unruly dogs!) And curiously, after an hour or so, people are not bothering me. It's this concept of "hui hui" or blending together without actually having to interact. We get trapped into thinking other people have to change for us to be happy or content, but really, sometimes all that's necessary is to just let it be and focus inward. Have you found this works for you?

There is a very popular sentiment - to reminisce on the past and believe that things back then were "always better" that life today is a mess and getting messier. I choose not to go there today. It does not serve me to think the good old days are all gone. I know change is easier for some than others, but really, isn't that 101 stuff right? Why be sad over things we cannot change when we can put energy on the things we can affect, the people we do love? Pleas join me in the I kēia manawa; it's pretty cool too.

Like many people, I set out an agenda for the day with a list of action items. Some items seem to take forever to get done though, and I have come to realize that not all tasks are created equal! They each actually require a certain level of attention and energy, and a select few really require a lot of focus and privacy, several hours free of any distractions. And many days I just don't have that large of a block of time.

Balance is one of those concepts that it is easy to be lulled into assuming is always preferable. But in reality, balance has a time and place, as does its opposite! Some people are confident naturally; here are some tips for the rest of us. My friend Chris Brogan recently recorded a podcast about it. (Link removed as the file is no longer available.) Today's episode of Beach Walks (filmed on an amazing day!!) came from my decisions to "swim first" and do the show second. One of the ways I've learned to build confidence is to be able to resist my feelings, and use data to inform my decisions and actions. That pesky #2 personality is frequently there to play the emotion card, which can keep us thinking and feeling "one down."

We are still traveling hence the light shows this week. We filmed this last week so we would all have an extra dose of beautiful Hawaii! It's about a different way of looking at love, using friendship rather than romance as the guide. Ever notice how we treat friends better than lovers, once the relationship has been around for a while? I think we sometimes expect too much of a partner, as if somehow love means losing me in favor of your wishes. This episode was inspired by something my mom told me - and her birthday is this weekend by the way. We'll be honoring her 84 years of determination and self-reliance, generosity and indeed good friendship.
