I tagged along with my friend JT (a multi-time Ironwoman) at this awesomely fun event for women and girls here on Maui’s north shore last weekend. The Butterfly Effect is a nonprofit run by Tatiana Howard – a pro kite surfer, SUPer and windsurfer. She puts on “Be The Effect” events all around the world as a way to give back to the community and inspire a new generation of water women to grow their skills and confidence and care for the environment. Sadly my GoPro fell off my board just as the race was starting however Tati has a great video here you can enjoy!

Secret Cameraman Shane was there as our support and camera crew. One of Maui’s top pro water and sports photographers – Erik Aeder – shared some his before and on the water shots with us. We met at the end of the race by “coincidence” and shared a ride back to the starting line to get cars. Check out his work – it is beautiful, and book an underwater portrait session with him next time you are on Maui!

Visit JT’s Maui Dog Remedies Website | Like her Facebook Page | Follow JT on Twitter

Visit The Butterfly Effect Website | Like the Facebook Page | Follow them on Twitter and Instagram

Visit Erik Aeder’s Website | Like his Facebook Page | Follow Erik on Instagram

Just when I thought I was out of juice near the end of the three miles, I did manage to smoke past two young butterflies. Look closely near the end of our episode for the photo finish! Which of course is nothing considering JT took 5th overall! Mind you, it wasn’t really a race – more of a stroll – and everyone had such a lovely day on the stunningly beautiful water on Maui’s North Shore.

This special event started on Friday with a Kupu Maui popup dinner, cooked by Top Chef chefs Lee Anne Wong and Sheldon Simeon, joined by Kupu Maui chef James Simpliciano. It was an elegant sunset affair, with farm to table veggies and fruits, and starr5ing freshly caught (by James!) mahimahi. If YOU ever come to Maui, do time your visit to attend a Kupu Maui event!

We were a bit groggy Saturday morning before breakfast – mostly due to intermittent sleep as our tents were huddled together with dogs and people and a mix of late to bed and early to rise! You’ll see a silvery overcast day – not typical for this area of west Maui – but many of us remarked about how serene it was. No wind blowing things around, no sun glare – very easy actually to just be here now. Please add your comment below or discuss this on Facebook!

Letting go of old emotions does not have to be a tortuous heavy process! Just think of them as bubbles in the basement wanting to rise up and fly free. Attach no strings to them – just open the door and let them go. No need fear when things are going too good! That is when you are strong and able to move mountains, even those ones your small self may have created out of molehills. Please add your comment below or discuss this on Facebook!

As I share the ever-developing “Beach Walks Philosophy,” one of the key goals is to unplug from so many old, rote beliefs that in fact rob us of being happy in the here and now. It has been a turbulent year – I am focusing on all the positive change that has resulted, in such swift and dramatic ways! Love to you all and see you in 2013.

So, what makes you happy? Go do it!

What makes you happy? Is that an abstract thing that comes before or after you have money? Not only do we get to choose what makes us happy, I would say it is our duty to know, and then make it so!

Can you tell I am going for extreme brevity recently? I am conscious of the time-stress factor – heaven knows I have been grappling with that one for years! Now though, I realize that the energy can transmit as much or more than the actual words. So I intend to embed a quality of experience in these episodes, and to merely suggest a line of thought, a direction of feeling, so we can each carry it forward to the degree we wish. PLUS, we can have a more detailed discussion here or on Facebook!

Of course the silent messenger is that you must have money to have happiness. Or that you must choose between the two. Isn’t it crazy how we humans can concoct so many strong yet conflicting imperatives? To me, it is all just currency. The main point is to know what makes each of us happy! Because that is the energy that attracts all kinds of other good stuff to us, and generates all kinds of good outflows from us too. My friend Sylvia recently wrote a blog post, Happiness is Good for Your Website. She took a delightful and no-nonsense approach to the business basis for this, and the article itself literally bubbles over, for me, with the energy of happiness!

As I share the ever-developing “Beach Walks Philosophy,” one of the key goals is to unplug from so many old, rote beliefs that in fact rob us of being happy in the here and now of 2012. I lived under the shadow of that money is evil thing for decades until I realized everything smply has the energy I give it.

I rarely go to the beach in the middle of the day. However I had a meeting with my friend Melanie Boudar, who owns Sweet Paradise Chocolate here in Wailea on Maui. She brilliantly suggested we do via walking on the beach!

Melanie is an awesome business woman and I love hearing how she stays focused on her desires, while creating ways for others to help her grow her business – ways that are mutually beneficial. We both marveled at the pleasures of doing business on Maui (permitting not included…) because people just love sharing their networks and offering time-saving tips! This is such a contrast to my earlier days when I felt I had to do everything myself or didn’t trust sharing my ideas with others. Glad that stuff is in the past!

Fortunately she got stopped for a phone call and as I looked down the beach, this photo was my view. Had to share it with you!

Love,
Rox

When I look out my back yard, I see this amazing view across the gulch and to a field on the other side. There is a Rumi quote I have loved for nearly 20 years:

Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

It is no coincidence that quantum physicists also refer to the field, and that students of consciousness often refer to the field of universal intelligence. One of my favorites science + spirituality books is The Field, by Lynne McTaggart. You can check it out here on Amazon; I love my Kindle version for reading and highlighting on the iPad!

I am launching my own quirky Rox version of NaBloPoMo – National Blog Posting Month. The goal is to write at least once a day. I am intending to meet that goal, however I reserve the right to post on any of my many blogs!

If you are interested in learning more about the Beachwalks philosophy, please join the email list here – signup in the sidebar. I am starting conference calls where we can all get together and chat, in real time! The first one is Saturday, November 3rd at 9 am HST. I will email the call-in details on Friday. Check your time zone here.

I do love the concept of “Take Your Daughter to Work” but let’s not confuse that with bringing all of our childhood baggage along every day. I’ve realized for many years that most of us would be divinely happy just by claiming our grown-up selves and being able to ignore the nagging whines and directives of our “not best self.” I call it the small self, as this part of my mind and heart sees life from a powerless, teeny perspective. Learning how to tell when my small self is running the show is the single most powerful tool I’ve learned in the art of consciousness!

If you would like to join a group call about this topic later this week, please join our email list! It’s a new feature I am offering, where we can go into more depth about the Beachwalks philosophy. I’d like to offer this a regular connection to the video episodes if there is interest! I am also writing a book about the Beachwalks philosophy and hope these calls will help me get my thoughts organized.

Here is an article on Spirituality in Times of Crisis that I’ll include in the discussion. It grew out of our emergency preparations for the tsunami warning we recently had here in Hawaii.

How much energy would you save if you were not having to prove things – to yourself or to others. How much easier would it be, to just be you? What sort of ideas would flow to you and how easy would they be to execute if your mind was not second-guessing you on a regular basis? You have nothing to prove. As for others approving you, also not necessary. Just a few ideas to play with this week, another installment of the Beachwalks Philosophy!

This Memorial Day rerun is one of our favorites. It has a timeless message and Shane’s shooting and editing is much much more than your typical episode.

We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true essence of Beach Walks – even though it was not filmed on a beach! It was completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. Today’s show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this “punchbowl” of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos. May all who died suffering, rest in peace today.

If this military topic resonates with you, may I suggest our 7-episode series filmed on the USS Nimitz, where Rox, a former anti-Vietnam war protester, spends the night with 4500 US Navy sailors and air force fighter pilots.

Hawaiian words:
Puowaina: _hill of sacrifice_
Kaua: _war_
Kapu: _taboo_
Maluhia: _peace_

I laid out my to do lists and got some crazy math! It helped me understand why I am behind on a few things. Note to self: I realized that the more I stay off my case the more I get done!

Have you noticed this explosion of opportunity and possibility? Well it brings along with it “a lot of stuff to do.” In fact the easier something is, the more likely I am to put it on a list somewhere. This is creating some fun challenges in the time-space continuum however. Translation: I sometimes get behind and my personal goals get shoved into tomorrow. Writing it all out and seeing the math on paper made a big impact on me! So much so, that I found time with my Secret Cameraman and Lexi to record this video note to self: get off your case about being “behind” and keep resetting priorities.

Why does that matter? Because for me life is all about the energy. I’ve learned that criticism only slows me down. If I am down in the dumps, I am not energized or creative – you know, those attributes that help me get things done. There is also this magical side benefit. When I am all lit up, I see many things that I don’t have to do anymore – they just get handled “in my absence.” #HowCoolIsThat?

OK, so what is your secret sauce for staying ahead of (or letting go of) those 21st century wish lists aka to do lists?

Hawaiian Word
Hoʻomāmā – to lighten up

Is it crazy to go to the beach on Saturday morning and start thinking about all that I did not get finished that week? Maybe not, as I came up with a new strategy to help me manage the incredible creeping to do list that continues to grow like some out of control virus. Watch the video then keep reading!

You know we keep reading about the data showing we are creating new information at an extraordinary speed – a speed at which we as individuals cannot really understand much less manage. Yet we go about our days as if life were the same as it was a decade or two ago. Our habits and our processes have not updated. We still cling to beliefs of how things must be done – because we’ve always done them that way or because we used to take comfort in doing them that way.

But now, things are reversed and we have far more freedom than we have time. Freedom to create like never before, to connect across the globe and even into space, to construct both systems and structures that are freakishly awesome. So stop bemoaning the lack of time and embrace the abundance of freedom.

I recently went to TedxMaui – a beautifully produced event. Yet I left after lunch – as I was literally full of the shared message to follow your dreams, be yourself, strike out and claim your life. Imagine if we measured inspirational events by how quickly the audience dissipated, because they “got it” and were off doing it? I just love having these wacky thoughts!

Last week I had a Divine Openings session, that had been scheduled a few days earlier. By the time we spoke, my client said, “You know, things started shifting after I made the appointment. I realized [this and that] and actually, I get it! I don’t really have that much to sort out now. Yes, it can be this easy.

Have a great week! Love, Rox

50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone.

Hawaiian words:
Puowaina: _hill of sacrifice_
Kaua: _war_
Kapu: _taboo_
Maluhia: _peace_

We were visiting Maui as guests of the Maui Visitors Bureau and were booked for a sailing canoe venture. This was going to be the highlight of my week as you all know how much I love the Hawaiian canoe! But, the wind was in town and the trip was canceled, much to my disappointment.

Maui is not called the “Magic Isle” for nothing though! Since we were already at the beach, we went in for a swim. The water is clear and beautiful so naturally I was underwater straight away. And then I heard something really familiar, but familiar only from my iPod not from “real life.”

Sure enough, it was the whales singing to me, “Don’t be disappointed Rox! We’re out here in the deep water reminding you all is well! Swim in this warm beautiful sea and you’ll find fun and pleasure all around you.” I cannot tell you how excited I was! In all my years of being underwater and seeing whales from boats, I have never once heard them singing while underwater. It was such a good reminder for all of us on vacation: don’t get too attached to any one thing! As Vene said, “there are treasures and mysteries awaiting us” – if we let it all flow.

I was hired by the Maui Visitors Bureau to assemble a team of new media bloggers and podcasters to participate in a week-long press trip to Maui. You are the lucky beneficiaries! In this second episode, filmed on-site at the Ulupalakua Ranch, I introduce you to George Kahumoku, a slack key guitarist and multi-talented person – like so many Hawaiians! You must watch this to learn about his many talents. I love the title of today’s episode as it has the rhythm of the Hawaiian language in these long yet simple words. Just say each one slowly as it is written; or do as my friend Shel Israel suggests, and say it 10 times fast!

You are the lucky beneficiaries! In this first episode, filmed on-site at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, you get to meet my kumu hula, or hula teacher, Lopaka Bukoski. I think you will be mesmerized by his knowledge, his lyrical use of Hawaiian chanting and language, and of course by the dancing! In Hawaiʻi, many of the kumu are men, and just like in this class, both men and women are hula practitioners. By the way, you can see the staff of the Ritz-Carlton performing in the lobby especially for this weekend of Hawaiian culture at the end of this episode.
