Controversy Springs over Awarding Grace Marks in MDCAT Exams

The Students and Parents Expressed their Concerns over the issue

ETEA: The Education and Evaluation Testing Agency has taken a stance against the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) over its argumentative decision to award grace marks to all students in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) if 90 percent of candidates fail to answer questions correctly. The decision regarding the exam, scheduled for 10 September, has sparked anger among students and parents.

ETEA, Through Khyber Medical University, ETEA submitted a dissenting note to PMDC, arguing that this policy unfairly disadvantages the 10 percent of students who answered correctly. In an official letter, ETEA stressed the importance of upholding justice by not punishing the high-performing minority.

Punjab University Allows Shifting of Admissions from 1st and 5th Semesters Evening to morning and morning to evening/one department to other/one program to other/from regular to teacher/employee quota seats. The students who applied but not took admission can also avail the opportunity.

The admission committee in its meeting held on 04-09-2023 Allowed the Shifting of Admission Forms for BS 1st and BS 5th Semester as advertised for the Academic year 2023-2024 for the following categories.

1. Category (A): From Morning to Evening and Vice Versa

2. Category (B): From One Program to Another Program (within the same Department or Any Other Department)

3. Category (C): From Regular to Teacher / Employee Quota Seats

With the following conditions:

1. They must have applied for the said program either in Morning or Evening on or before 07-08-2023 (Closing date of admission forms).

2. They will be entertained only if they are on merit and general merit list is exhausted and seats are still vacant.

3. The responsibility rests with the Departments to inform to all such applicants regarding this policy.

4. The applicants seeking shifting of form from one program to another within the same department to a program in any of the department must submit applications to the concerned Head of the Department.

5. Those who have already submitted their admission fee of Rs. 500/- within the stipulated time will not need to pay the admission fee again.

6. Category C is only applicable where the teacher / employee seats are vacant.

2. Consider those candidates who have submitted application forms but could not submit admission Fee Rs. 500/- within the due date, are allowed to seek admission after paying Rs. 2000/- as late admission processing fee. Departments can accommodate such cases subject to the availability of vacant seats and after the exhaust of general merit list.

3. Consider those candidates who appear in irrelevant category entry test will also be accommodated for the admission.

Reference: These lines have been taken from the one act play “The Bear” written by famous Russian Writer Anton Chekov.

Context: Anton Chekov is famous for psychological treatment of his characters. “The Bear” is his one act play in which human relations are discussed. Popova is a beautiful young widow who claims to mourn over death of her husband till her death. The play is a strong satire on the vanity of women and hypocrisy of human beings in general. Chekov has also pointed out the paradox that a landlord who is called “The Bear” and who himself is proud of his bad temperament, falls in love with Popova. Firstly Popova and Smirnov exchange harsh words, hate each other and are ready to fight a duel. In the end of the play, they are ready to be married. All the vanity of Popova is shaken at the end of the play.

Context: “The Boy Comes Home” is a light comedy full of amusing and witty dialogue throughout. Philip comes back from war to live with his uncle James who is his guardian. It is to inform all the students who wish to appear in MA/M.Sc Annual 2023 Exams, that Punjab University has issued a notification which invites applications for annual 2023 exams.

As per this notification only students having compartments or who wish to improve the divisions, can only apply for these exams. The fresh candidates are unable to apply for annual 2023 exams. As it is last year of 2 Years MA/M.Sc degrees in Pakistan.

Earlier HEC banned 2 years private/regular degrees in Pakistan. It allowed the students to take admissions in BS 5th semester in place of two years MA/M.Sc.

However the students are not happy with this decision of HEC. They say that they cannot afford private education which is very expensive in Pakistan. Mostly students do jobs and continue their educations privately while their work.
