Black Sheep’s ‘Expect a Letter’ campaign for SGC, targeting London design & advertising agencies received a 60% response rate.

The campaign’s aim was to present SGC as a print company who understood what a creative agency required from their print partner and therefore attract a high calibre customer producing a greater profit margin.

We sent out ‘guerilla marketing’ style letters to creative heads telling them to ‘Expect a Letter’ on a named day. These arrived unbranded, with no explanation as to who or where the letter was from.

On the first allocated day a 1m x 1m ‘S’ arrived,

which we then repeated the process over the course of the next two weeks to unravel the mystery senders initials- SGC.

Stephens & George commercial, part of the larger Stephens & George Print Group. SGC is the sheet-fed printing arm of the organisation.
The campaign was later rolled out to the top 100 design businesses across the country.

Black Sheep’s ‘Relax’ campaign for S&G achieved an 18% response rate, leading to a £1.6 million or 13% increase in the groups bottom line.

Strategic and creative thought, good organisation, closely targeted direct mail and advertising campaigns went into the Relax campaign for S&G Print Group, Wales’ largest independent printing group.

By creating a brand in a generally generic price driven market we have helped S&G build a brand that customers initially buy into and stay involved with and loyal to over time. The intent of the campaign was to emphasise that print buyers could rely on S&G to deliver a stress free print job, on time and on budget. With the stress taken out of the system by S&G, the print buyers would be reassured and have no need to worry. They could relax.

The Relax message was carried through with a quarterly mail out of luxurious relaxation items such as a pair of slippers and an aromatherapy kit, all designed to make the recipient forget about the toils of print buying. Advertisments were also taken out in key trade publications to coincide with the despatch of the items to the desks of the targeted print buyers.

Making our creative even more accessible

FS Me, designed and distributed by Fontsmith has set a new benchmark in typographic accessiblilty.

Researched and developed in conjunction with and endorsed by - Mencap, the UK’s leading disability charity. It avoids the usual clichés associated with ‘accessible’ fonts.

It’s not quirky or odd looking, doesn’t resemble the childlike design of fridge magnets or early learning tools and is set to challenge Arial as a new standard in legibility. This is a first by a designer in crafting and care which stands up as a typeface in its own right, as a benchmark in accessibility and is available now for people to use as an everyday tool to assist in the Mencap vision of a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

It was designed to exceed government standards for typeface accessibility. Its simple, elegant feel and extensive character set including bespoke Welsh characters provide freedom for scale and creativity. A clean, modern sans serif, warm and friendly, but not too curvy which is crisp and clear and definitely not cold.

That’s why Black Sheep have decided to use FS Me in all of our marketing communications as well as introduce it to our clients when appropriate.

Wanted… Black Lambs

In an industry where it can be difficult to get your first break and ever more so with the current economic climate. We’re offering a work experience programme that aims to help creative graduates find that all important first job and make the difficult transition from university studies to the work place, whilst gaining an insight into the workings of a creative agency.

An internship with Black Sheep will provide candidates with one month of valuable work experience in our studio whilst providing us with an extra pair of hands in the pen. The placement duration can be extended to a maximum of three months, depending on the candidate and at the discretion of the Creative Director.

So what kind of lambs do we want?

We are looking for recently qualified graduates from any graphic design based discipline, (including digital media candidates) to participate in our newly created lambing programme.

You’ll have a passion for creativity that borders on the obsessive and a brain that’s loaded with ideas. Great coffee & tea making abilities would also be seen as a distinct advantage.

Obviously, you’ll be a whiz at all the usual software packages, but more importantly have a great portfolio of ideas from 3 years of study.

In the first instance, apply to our Creative Director (neil@blacksheep.info) outlining why you’d like to be one of our black lambs, including 3 examples of work which you consider to be your best.

Note: This is an unpaid position, however we will help with travel and subsistence costs.

Due to the volume of applications, it’s sometimes difficult to respond to everyone, even though we want to. However, we’ll try our best to feedback to unsuccessful white lambs.
