If you ask Rico Suave if he married a laid back–tough–roll with the punches girl…until this past year I’m willing to bet he would have quickly said, “You bet!” This last year though, oh my–I feel like I’m been on a bit of a roller coaster. From starting our home study last March for a little princess in China…then feeling too tired to think…getting blood work that said I had arthritis and Sjogren’s…then finally learning the culprit of those was spirochetes (the bacteria that I now hate so much that causes Lyme disease). For any of you who have this, have had this or known someone who has–you know it will WIPE out every ounce of energy you have–and often cause a bazillion other issues from GI, auto-immune, memory, adrenal failure, chronic fatigue, eye problems…and can even lead to things that appear to be Parkinson’s, MS, RA or Alzheimer’s in the works.

YESTERDAY–I headed to a 8am eye doctor appointment as I’ve continuously had blurred vision in my right eye. The doc won’t let me wear glasses or give me a new prescription because my vision is different every month in that eye–and my cornea is just irritated because of inflammation causing some serious blur…like–yesterday I couldn’t read the TOP line of the eye exam. Nice.

My morning started out leaving the house at 7am–because I see a specialist downtown…so I got to trek through this (thank you Rico Suave for doing this EVERY morning for our family)…

I have to confess. I am NOT a city girl at heart. Nope. I think this mom belongs on a farm–with chickens and a few goats…and maybe even a llama;) So–starting my day sitting in this and navigating with one eye…not the ideal way to start. And I wasn’t the laid back–tough–roll with the punches girl that Rico Suave married by the time I got called back either. For ONE YEAR I’ve been going to these eye appointments…and really, I’ve gotten a bit weary of them…so I make them entertaining by saying crazy things when a new physician’s assistant comes in to ask me if I have any concerns. I need to record these some time for your entertainment;)

Yesterday though–it wasn’t so crazy and instead more like this, “I still can’t see out of this eye–please don’t let the doctor try and give me steroid drops again because eventually that will cause cataracts and that’s not how you treat an infection related to lyme. I have 4 kids, I’m not just a number–and I really need to be able to see.” It was followed by silence…I think maybe that was too much;)…and then he said, “Let me go get the doctor”.

When the doc finally came in, he wanted to give me another prescription (of course)–and it can be so frustrating to live in a state where doctors know diddly squat about Lyme. I gave the prescription BACK to the doctor. Started crying…and then I broke up with my eye doctor;). Seriously–he told me he was moving up north–and wanted to refer me to a cornea surgeon. I left with eyes full of tears…both eyes blurry now–and just prayed the Lord was over all of this and would completely take these stinkin’ spirochetes/Lyme away because I loath them. When I got home–I thought I saw a tick on my van’s windshield…which I attempted to squash–and then I realized it was just an innocent brownish lady bug. Thankfully, he managed to fly away after I tapped him once (steer clear of someone with Lyme if you see a tick…they WILL squash them with vengeance!)

Now…that part is the DOWN part of my roller coaster in the last 48 hours.

And my sweet friend Tammy Dugger just happened to call as I was leaving the parking deck and she got to hear all about it. Can I just say I am SO THANKFUL for my best girlfriends who have just been such rocks during this year of crazy?! She surprised me later that day with THIS on my doorstep…(she got it at Hallmark…and the most fun part is one of my friends is actually the original artist!) What a treat of TRUTH!

On a side note–you better believe we are all about wellness and being healthy at our house. WHICH is why I think this next iPhone shot is so funny:) Look what I’ve got my kids drinking for juice??? FULL of 72 nutrients! Aloe Vera juice–it tastes like white grape juice…and it’s way better for them!

This morning I had a 9am doc visit with my naturopath doctor who seriously–is amazing. He is a strong believer…and after going through months and months of doctors trying to figure out why I was having arthritis, GI problems, adrenal failure, etc–with my first visit with him–he was able to pinpoint exactly what it was and send me for blood work to prove it. I’ve been seeing him monthly for 6 months–and 6 months ago began treatment to get rid of these awful problem causing spirochetes. Although I was bummed this morning to see the tests show they were STILL there–this doctor encouraged me and he believes that in a few months I will be 100% clear if I stick to my crazy regime of supplements, natural antibiotics and anti-inflammatory diet. I was encouraged walking through the waiting room of his office seeing patients from as far as Texas who fly across the country for his care–and I really believe he has a God-given gift of wisdom and healing. Some people think I’m nuts for not going to a regular doctor–believe me…I started there…but this is where the Lord has given me the most peace about. I’ve learned SO MUCH about taking care of myself and my family–and I love when you find a doctor that you really trust. My primary care doctor is completely on board too–and I’m just so thankful for the ways the Lord has guided and affirmed I am on the right path.

After a not so fun day yesterday–this roller coaster went right up…and I know today is a new day–and I’m trusting and believing I’ll not only kick those spirochetes/Lyme to the dust…but in the end I’ll be healthier than I have been in years. My doc thinks I’ve probably had spirochetes/lyme in my body for much longer than the tick bite I remember almost 2 years ago–but more like maybe even since childhood based on my symptoms and how aggressive these boogers are with me.

Today was such a great day as I felt like I was so encouraged–and we sat down and looked through my chart going back to November…celebrating all the symptoms that are now no longer there–and really how far I’ve come! I am still really tired every day. I still have chronic fatigue and often feel like I’m 85 with arthritis. And I have a completely whacked right eye. BUT…I can see perfectly with my left eye. I hands and feet no longer tingle (my rheumatologist tried to tell me it was possibly the beginning of MS–and that’s now GONE!), and the brain fog is gone too…that was AWFUL. And through it ALL…I have home schooled…4 little precious ones. THEY have stood with me and encouraged me. We have prayed together–we have dreamed together. And really–our lives will never be the same. I’m SO PROUD of my kids and how they have grown with me in this journey. And my Rico Suave–oh man. This has been better than the best of marriage counselors…as the “laid back–tough–roll with the bunches–I can do it myself” girl he married…can’t do it all and has simplified many things in our lives and home. He has cooked more dinners each week, not said a word if cleaning or laundry didn’t happen and encouraged me to stick with doctors who we felt best about even if they didn’t take insurance and it didn’t make the most sense to the world around us.

So thankful. And I just have SO MUCH to be thankful for.

Sweet Laney-loo today doing a little school work in waiting room…

After 2 appointments for momma (my other doc was followed by allergy shots–trying our best to keep Rosie–and keeping her outside for now…or at least trying to!)…we then zipped over to pick up Frank and Isaac from preschool. IT WAS THEIR LAASSSSSTTT day until the Fall! I can’t BELIEVE all the Lord has done in our youngest child’s life this year! This time last year I was so nervous whether preschool would be a good fit for him to do two mornings a week. He was a bit behind developmentally–but he SOARED and is now right on track with a rockin’ vocabulary that his teachers can’t believe! We said our goodbyes…and we will definitely be getting together with these teachers this summer for lunch as we bonded and love them so!

After lunch, nap time, Loo’s ballet…it was time to have a little celebration (told you I’m on a roller coaster;). Thinking about my littles today and how supportive and amazing they have been–I decided to fire up the grill and cook some hotdogs (don’t you worry…they are organic and free of nitrates and such!) Just ’cause daddy was in Michigan doesn’t mean momma can’t fire up the grill. (I wish I had a video of my trying to light it…I was throwing matches in the grill because the igniter doesn’t work and you have to light it after you turn on the gas…I was afraid of torching my eye brows so I was tossing the matches in. The forth one finally worked:) Loo tried to get my phone in time for the lighting action just in case…but she only got it ready for the successful part after the lighting…

THEN it was time for our home-made pops!

And that’s our last 48. Not exactly anything to write home about–but I figured I’d document it anyway…because I really do believe things will look different each passing month and I want to remember every bit…because no matter how hard some days might seem for me or for you–there really is sweetness and joy and miracles in each and every one. There are friends who are there for you that surprise you…and you realize how it’s better to have 3 really great friends than 300 or even 30. You see your kids trudge through with you–and you see their character form. You find yourself still holding your love’s hand–and really…you weren’t made for this world…but life is as it is now–might be as sweet as it ever gets. And you feel the love, the presence, the power and the peace of the One who called you to Himself…to trust Him on this journey–and all fear and worry is taken away…because really it’s just a calling to persevere..and that perseverance will produce character–more like the character of your Father–so even this…it will be worth it.

Hope you all are having a blessed week! XOXO!

As I was giving my kids their daily dose of Omega 3′s…I thought back to several years ago when I didn’t do these and just didn’t know how important they were. I wish that I had known then what I know now…like those multivitamins really aren’t all what they are cracked up to be–and there are so many other things I need to do first with those just being more like filler.

I’m all about keeping the kids well and also being preventative and Omega 3′s are super duper important part of that. For one…it’s most likely that most children’s diets are deficient of the Omega 3′s they need. WHY do they need them??? They are important for cognitive development (coordination, brain function and attention) and they promote growth and brain development. Kids with ADHD have also shown lower amounts of Omega 3′s–and they also help with kids prone to asthma and eczema. And for a bonus–they have been proven to prevent disease. SO…they need to be in the diet:).

I have found TWO effective ways to get Omega 3′s quickly and beautifully into my littles (well…into most of them;) I like to mix them up so they don’t get old to them.

This is the FUN way–with Coromega Squeeze! YUMMO!

THE other way–and truthfully a bit better–is with cod liver oil. I LOVE cod liver oil by Arctic because they rock it out with different natural flavors making it taste SO much better and the kids are more agreeable to take their spoonfuls (minus Isaac who has YET to taste it to see that it really is yummy!) We like strawberry flavor–and it IS flavored naturally…we don’t do artificial at this house:) The liquid form is going to absorb more quickly and easier–and my kids would never do pills…so this works for all of us!

AND just to make you laugh–this is our daily dose caught by Rico Suave this afternoon…

Isaac is really funny about new tastes and textures–so he is the ONLY one I can’t get to take the Coromega or cod liver oil yet…but we will eventually get there because mommy wants him to be a well boy too:). The kids do take a kids multivitamin and a kids probiotic daily also. Our favorite probiotic is Kiddi Flora because my kids need a liquid or a chewable (they will not swallow even the probiotic pearls). If you feed your kiddos healthy veggies–especially if they are organic–you want to be sure they are on probiotics (NOT just live culture yogurts and Keifer although those are two things that start our day). They love the raspberry flavor of these probiotics.

EVERYONE who eats healthy has parasites–so you need those probiotics to help fight those critters off. And if they ever put hands in their mouth–there’s a nice invite for parasites too. We also take daily probiotics…cause we have kids–and they come with parasites;). I get tested regularly for parasites, and it’s always interesting to learn where they are from. My last discovered parasite was from South America…and because I’ve not been there–you can guess I got those bad boys from veggies:). BUT thankfully I take daily probiotics to fight those bad boys–so all is well.

Other things we continue to do on our road to wellness for our kids–absolutely NO artificial dyes or flavors. NO corn syrup–if corn syrup is ANY WHERE on the label I do NOT buy it. If it has cornstarch or other starches in the ingredients I put it back on the grocery shelf. I shop the perimeter of the chain grocery stores–and any prepackaged things I only get organic to help limit the preservative content. We limit our gluten (flours now have 90% more gluten causing immune, inflammation and more allergy/asthma problems). We use almond butter instead of peanut butter (another post for another day why). And we cook our own breakfast, lunch and dinner…A LOT. We try to limit carbs and make sure we are getting lots of protein and vegetables–with fruit being seen as a dessert rather than just a source of nutrition (kids tend to like fruits over veggies so we get those in first).

We also do Vitamin D drops (the kids love these because they don’t taste–and they think they are getting medicine…and my crazy kids feel special as I drop 5 drops in each of their little baby bird mouths). If you have littles, your pediatrician has probably told you that children now are recommended to increase their Vitamin D intake. If you let your kids play outside without sunscreen–then you are probably cool…but on rainy days or days you aren’t playing outside a lot–you can give them Vitamin D drops to give them what they need too.

ALL that being said–all things DO happen in moderation here. Like today–for Mother’s Day…Rico Suave totally bought 2 slices of cake at a local bakery and we all 6 split them!!! (See…moderation is everyone splitting instead of everyone getting there own slice. AND we’ve been known to stop at Krispy Creme for Frankie baby on occasion too! I think in our culture we some times forget moderation and I’m trying my best to really do moderation…as in once a month something instead of once a day!)

NOW–if you were completely bored by what we do for a little wellness at our casa–you have to see how precious Parker and one of his best buds were at their LAST baseball game of the season on Saturday!

OH MY HEART–they are just precious!

Exhibit A—moderation! Nana and Papa were in town this weekend and at the game I saw ITY with some Fritos! Because he never has things like this at home…I can smile and let the boy enjoy them because it’s in moderation:) Thanks Nana;)

On a celebrate TETYANA note–look what came in the mail today for her bedroom door for the summer?!?! I’m so excited! I bet she has never had anything with her name personalized on it before!!

AND last but not least–I hope you all had a HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! I came downstairs to find breakfast and this beautiful Mother’s Day decoration awaiting me!

Blessings to each of you!!!!

andrea

P.S. Thank you to those of you who have joined us in praying for my friend Angie after her having a stroke last Sunday. She is now in a rehabilitation center where she will learn to do more each day with her left side. I got to see her today and she looks amazing!!! I’m so proud of the progress she is making! Please continue to pray for her to have a full recovery!!!!!!!!! She is a momma of 4 little ones and a dear friend…a runner and just an amazing friend and mom! Thank you so much for praying!!!

When Rico Suave has business in TN–it doesn’t take much to twist our arm for us to field trip it along.

Because…

Our trips to Tennessee usually consist of this…

LOTS of golf cart rides with Uncle Buck and the Middlebrooks kids…

This is how we spent our Wednesday. I’m surprised Uncle Buck and Aunt Lesa still have grass with the many rounds of golf cart rides as every child has to have a turn…and then it starts all over again. My friend Jessica came over with her littles. Rich’s friends from UGA crazily ended up with a pastoral position at his families church in TN–so it’s always so much fun to get family and friend time in on our visits!

THEN–on Thursday we scooted up to one of my dearest adoption momma friends’ farm…Kristi is definitely one of my sidekicks! And I was soooo thankful to have some of my most favorite mommas in TN join us for a morning play date (I think it was more of a MOMMY play date–but our kids ALSO had quite the time playing together!)
I JUST LOVE THESE INCREDIBLE LADIES!!! Vanessa, Candy, Kristi, Me, Kim, Cris and Eve

We SHOULD have grabbed a picture earlier because several other mommas were with us earlier in our visit too! I love how we all have stories together and how for many of us–our stories twine together. Can’t believe how long we have all now known each other. It blows me away to think that Kristi and I started a friendship through my email asking about her adoption (she had JUST come home with Lucy Lane from Ethiopia) and now…years and years later we are still friends and we’ve watched each others littles grow up…and our families even grow more again and again. I can’t tell you how these women encourage and challenge my heart. Our “kitchen talk” is just priceless to me…we quickly “go there”…sharing our hearts, our hopes, our fears, our desires and dreams with one another—and lots of laughter is tucked in there too. Each of these ladies have encouraged me in so many ways. (Kim–I still have to pinch myself getting to actually spend time with you after our years of emailing and encouraging one another while you were in Hong Kong! SO thankful for you!)

I wish you could all see how we all look at one another’s children. We have all shared referral pictures from the beginning–watched our little ones grow–and it’s just so fun getting to spend a little time with these moms this week!!!

THEN…we got back to Aunt Lesa and Uncle Buck’s after our play date–took naps…and then…they rigged tarp for some old fashioned slip and slide fun with soap:) They had a blast!

See those trees up there in the background??? That’s RIGHT where Rich got on one knee and asked for my hand in marriage. To say this is a special place to us is a bit of an understatement:) Rich drove 4 1/2 hours 9 years ago to this place…where his daddy grew up and where he spent holidays and summers to ask for my hand. And to step back and see my children rolling around and giggling here…oh my heart!

Not even two weeks after I said YES–Rich’s dad went to be with the Lord after a very short battle of leukemia. Richard got to share his plan of taking me here to ask for my hand–and his daddy was so tickled he would want to ask me here. Uncle Buck, Richard’s dads brother, has loved our children with a deep love–as has Aunt Lesa and we are so thankful for the time we have with them!!! They make me laugh at the lengths they go to for the children…they were having so much fun with them!

Not sure if you can tell by these pictures…but they had just a little bit of fun;).

After THIS…we had dinner–lit up a fire pit…roasted marshmallows and make smores. Followed by looking at stars…and Frankie baby enlightening us with, “Nod all da stars are stars! Some of dem are really planets!” Genius. Genius I tell you!

We scooted back home this morning–and headed on over to the McBrayers for some fun and grilled out. Now…off to bed for tomorrow’s last baseball game!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!! If you have a moment this weekend and in the week/month ahead–will you please pray for my dear friend Angie?? Angie is one of our speakers at Created for Care for the breakout on domestic adoption–but more than that she is one of my dearest friends. On Sunday she had an accident on the lake causing a stroke. Please pray for her by name as the Lord brings her to your mind–please pray for a full recovery in the weeks and months ahead (WEEKS would be even more awesome than months…so please join our family and friends in praying for a miracle!!!). The Lord is able–and can do MORE than we ask…please pray that He not only restores but does even more than we ask in this situation!!! She is making HUGE progress each day, and I’m so proud of her. Please pray for more progress each and every day in LEAPS and BOUNDS! Thank you!!!

Parker won both of his games today! Yay!
Proud of him! He is in 1st grade and played on the 2nd and 3rd grade league this year and did great!!! Soccer is his favorite sport–and he’s pumped to be taking a few British soccer camps this summer to hone in on his head bumping skills:)

And that was our morning. Followed by mommy taking a nap with Frankie baby (a much needed nap for us both!) I loooove my naps with my Frankie baby. We celebrated a 1st birthday with a neighbor and dear friend. THEN…mommy had a girls night out with one of her dearest friends at a yummy Southern restaurant that has a menu full of gluten free goodness (thank you Angie G. for a much needed night out!)

Hope you have a blessed weekend!

Sooo—tomorrow is SATURDAY…which means sports at our house. P-man has a baseball game. THEN he has his soccer game–what he has been calling his “championship game” because it’s the last one of the session. {I’ll go ahead and say forgive any typos in this entry b/c things are a bit blurry tonight…which means although the soccer cupcakes aren’t perfect–I get extra points if you can actually tell they are supposed to sort of be soccer balls:) Made these to help celebrate after the game tomorrow…

This week also marked a FIRST for Frankie baby. He was finally old enough this year to perform in the Spring Sing! The youngest group is the 2 year old class…hard to believe he was 2 when the year started! He did great…as in he did NOT run off the stage…BUT at times he almost broke his back trying to hide behind the blue bow:)

He started the year with NO hair and now has a head full! Next year, ITY will be old enough to sing in his first Spring Sing! We won’t rush it though…momma likes to keep them little.

Another first this week…we broke out our first watermelon of the year AND momma taught all the kids how to have a seed spittin’ contest (you can take the girl out of the country…but you can’t take the country out of the girl;).

And then…the keepin’ it real…

Things haven’t been easy here lately–and I will say this…I have held my tongue and not complained. (The children and I memorized the verses this month in Philippians 2:14-18 “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold outc the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.” Instead of saying I’m frustrated because I have blurred vision in my right eye–I try to say how thankful I am that I can see well out of my other. I’ll skip the talk about joints or this or that…I have told a couple of my friends the issues that the sweet teenager coming to stay with us this summer has deeper and harder things than I will EVER face…so these little health things are nothing in the big scheme of things…and hence begins glory in suffering…

I will say though–hopefully without complaining–and just being honest…that things are different and it is hard. Just over a year ago–I could stay up late…sew a little dress for Laney…get 6 hours of sleep and be good to go the next day. Now, I go to bed at 9pm–sleep until 7:30 or 8am…and when I wake I feel like I’ve slept a couple of hours. My joints ache–I pray throughout the day for the smallest things I used to take for granted. I am learning to LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME…to not worry about tomorrow and only focus my energy on today…TO BE THANKFUL FOR THE LITTLE THINGS…to slow down…TO SPEAK MORE LOVE in my slowing down. But it is still hard. And I am beginning to understand what it means to REALLY LIVE FOR ONLY WHAT MATTERS.

I look at my little things–and see the future GLORY. They do not compare.

Some might tell me I need to not do ANYTHING for awhile. BUT the Lord gives me strength.

The reality for me–is I live in a nice home. My husband has a great job. I have 4 healthy children. And now I know thousands of children will be aging out of the orphanage system in Ukraine, Latvia, Russia…and many will be targeted for sex trafficking and prostitution. I know Jesus. I see His glory. There is more to lose by my doing nothing. Sure I know He doesn’t NEED me–but I know if I am willing…He may choose to use me…for His glory. My blurry eye issues, joint pain, anything I’m going through really doesn’t compare in light of the gospel. What the enemy would want to discourage me with–I will hit my knees and say BE STRONG IN MY WEAKNESS…I will glory in these sufferings…can you still use me Lord? Here I am…

Paul says in Romans that we should “glory in our sufferings”.

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

I’m not sure about you–but I’m constantly reminding my children NOT TO BOAST. But here–we are told what to boast in. I was explaining this to them the other day…and they thought it was so cool they are “allowed” to boast in something. Boast in the hope of the glory of God. GLORY IN OUR SUFFERINGS…not only because they are for God’s glory (what the enemy means for evil–He means and uses for His good and glory!)…AND compared to glory–what IS TO COME–our sufferings…they are a candle in the wind!!! And then…there’s good stuff. What our suffering produces…

perserverance.

character.

HOPE.

I’m learning how to persevere in new ways—and I’m seeing His power carry me.

Character? Oh I hope it’s being produced and shaped and molded. I feel like a fish out of water so often…but I think it’s part of the molding and remolding process. I am not alone here…and neither are you. (Wish you lived closer and we could have coffee and share our remolding stories…not always pretty–and this mom needed A LOT of remolding…)

Don’t get me wrong–this is VERY hard for me. It’s very hard for me to walk in my daily calling and NOT complain. Many days I want to question…seriously–homeschool? I mean…don’t you know how rested I’d be if my kids were back in school?? I mean–wouldn’t THAT be what is best for ME??? It can be easy to start complaining or comparing or wondering how things would or could or should be easier–but those things are NOT where the Lord has called me to be…and to glory in today. And while it can be hard–I know I am where I am for a purpose…as hope peaks through each day in some way to remind me of His purpose and the big picture…and why this is GOOD…and His will for my life is for my GOOD–not to bring harm but to bring HOPE. His will for my life (and yours) is good, pleasing and perfect. And really…although it it is hard…would we really have it any other way??? If you know what I’m feeling or talking about–then praise Jesus…you aren’t alone;) Seriously–we really need to get coffee together and encourage one another;).

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Do you feel it??? His love is always being poured out into your heart through the Holy Spirit. There will be times where you, too, feel like a fish out of water…but rest and wait on Him–allow HIM to be the one that fills you. Not others, not longing for deeper friendships or your kids to be in this or that…but JUST FOR MORE OF HIM…and if you slow down–and sit at His feet…HE WILL POUR…and you will be filled with more of His glory.

Not sure if this made sense at all…but it felt good to process and just say. I hope you all have a blessed weekend!!! Off to bed…gotta rest up for team mom action tomorrow:)

Blessings!

When your name is Frankie-baby…you absolutely celebrate half birthdays. We are always looking for reasons to celebrate at our house–so half birthdays provide a good reason. And the children totally think they are legit. Frank was so excited ALL day–and the other children gave him special privileges (getting out of van first, picking the first book to read–you know the important stuff;) because…it was “his birthday”.

Mommy wanted to make a gluten free cake that was delish (selfishly I wanted to indulge as well:). I played it safe and used Pamela’s chocolate cake mix. I wanted to try an icing with agave nectar–so I tried THIS one. She was not lying when she said it was seriously chocolatey!!! If you love chocolate–then this is a great recipe…made with grape seed oil, vanilla extract, cocoa and agave nectar. Rico Suave loved it. I thought it was TOO chocolatey. Think I’ll try THIS one next time as this looks a little more like my kind of icing.

Here’s Frankie baby’s HALF birthday cake!

You gotta love a low key birthday—another reason for you to celebrate half birthdays:) Your party guests…the sister and brothers:)

Loo bear trying to smile with her cheek full…

And THEN…time for the half birthday celebration song! “Happy HALF birthday to you…”

Don’t you just love the faces your child makes when they are being sung to??? This is one of my most favorite things about birthday songs. Yet another reason to celebrate half birthdays…you get to enjoy this more often:)

Now–will someone just get this momma some real birthday candles??!!! (If you are a friend, blog-reader or both–then you know this is SO not the first time I’ve had to use a tea candle on a cake. I get SO close to being on top of it–I just never fully get there!)

I like to pretend this quirk of mine will be one of the things my kids remember and like to laugh about later;).

And there ya have it. He’s officially 3 1/2!

Each day as I go about my day I find myself thinking of Tetyana (the sweet almost 16 year old who will be with us this summer from an orphanage in the Ukraine). I wonder if I’ll have to switch modes–or if she’ll like regressing a bit into the child-like world that she may have not had the freedom to enjoy fully. (Don’t worry–I’m not putting her in a bedroom with Barbies and Polly Pockets). I find myself cleaning up Laney’s room…picking up her dolls…hanging up her dresses…

Did she have these??? When she sees her doll so delicately dressed…tucked under a blanket in a tiny doll crib…what will she feel? How can I love her best?

Will she want to curl up on the couch with us on movie night or will see sit across the room just wishing…deep down that she could?

And my biggest hearts question–how will we ever let her go? (Don’t worry–we had to sign a contract saying we’d take her back to the airport on August 5th no matter what;). Then what? Because we all know–life for us and for her…will forever look different after that. And that’s where I cry out to the Lord. That’s where we open our hands and our hearts. That’s where we say use us…in any way You want…thy will be done.

Thank you Naomi for sending me the link to one of Tom Davis’s recent posts. THIS is a must read for anyone hosting a child, adopting an older one or following the Lord in a new way and unexpected way.

And this is a must watch for everyone.

Man…am I thankful for our everyday normal…like half birthdays and fun. And I thankful for all that is to come…God is so good all the time.

Blessings to you!

XOXO,

And this is how we roll…

{our weekend in pictures}

Friday night girls slumber party at our house. No pics for proof…but we did watch KungFu Panda too–which I may have embarrassed Laney during because I boohooed at the end. Such a BEAUTIFUL ending…to a really hard adoption story. I’ve never held my breath so much during a animated movie. It will be much different watching it with ITY one day and any of our other adopted children–but I thought it was well done. The only part I didn’t embrace was the theme that the past doesn’t matter–because it really does…and I want to be able to go there with my little ones and give them the freedom to retrace whatever we can or they need to as they grow.

Ok–so all that being said–slumber party on Friday night at our house:) THEN…on Saturday morning bright and early it was time for some…

It was a close game. And while I want to SAY we play to have fun–I’m a mom of 3 boys..and I’ll be honest…we also want to win. Just being honest. They played hard…so hard–that Parker didn’t even realize they didn’t win. Then we scooted over to the soccer game. And that wasn’t such a big game either. After watching 2 games…it was time for some GIRL time.

Loo spotted these lovely clip-ons at “A Classy Clutter” downtown. (Can I just say how much I love having a girl!)

We spotted these on Saturday–and although they were JUST $12–we didn’t buy them. HOWEVER–her daddy went back on Monday on his way home from work and brought them home. She’s so proud of them:). She asked to get her ears pierced once, and I told her she had to be 13…just because 6 sounds too young…and well–aren’t clip-ons way cuter;)?

After trying on clip-on earrings we went by Gluten Free Cutie for a little treat together! (I mean–the boys were at home doing yard work…and we really didn’t want to get in their way;) YUM!
Gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, dye-free…YUM!

We had to race home from cupcakes to welcome our 50 friends over for a fun African American Fellowship potluck! Rico Suave smoked chicken and everyone brought side dishes…and we let the kids run wild. LOVE THESE FAMILIES!

Our group is usually much bigger than this..so this was actually a quieter and calmer night together…if you can have that with 30 kids running around hitting balls, swinging, playing chase…some how we managed to catch up with one another!

Here’s ITY with his side kick!

LOVE that these boys were crib mates at Hannah’s Hope and our families didn’t even live in the same state when we got their referrals. AND NOW we live around the corner from each other and they are growing up together!!! They have a special bond, and it’s so sweet watching them together.

I told ITY to “look up” for the picture–as in LOOK AT THE CAMERA BECAUSE HE WAS LOOKING AT MY KNEES…you get what you ask for…

LOVE my Bible study girls! We are all in a couples Bible study (our kids come along too)…pictured below me, Angie, Laura and Kimberly…

Can you tell we spend too much time together???

On Sunday–you get NO pictures of me…as I woke up…and had hit a wall from all the Friday and Saturday action. No rest for this mom leads to big swollen eyes and inflammation in this mom. So I got everyone ready for church…me included…and half way to church Rico Suave turned around and brought me home. Momma rested up…and had bedside Baptist. It was a much needed morning of rest.

And then at 3:30pm…it was off to the races. Parker, Laney and Frank raced in the town bike race…we joined the Dentons and the Carley crew. Here are the kiddos with their prized medals at the end! (AND while Angie and I waited for them at the finish line–she taught me how to use Instagram. HENCE…if you are my friend on Instagram you now know why I never posted pictures before until Sunday:)

ITY waiting with us at the finish line with Sam

Showing off the medals (where everyone is a winner;)…

Really–this is more like it…

AND after the race…Angie’s crew headed on over for dinner before starting our week ahead! I love a table full of kids!

AND THAT was our weekend in pictures:)

Hope you all had a great one!!! We rested up…and got up bright and early for a little P.E. fun…our weekly Monday swim lesson!

Frank is OFFICIALLY swimming!!! So excited to just have 1 that needs to learn now…this will definitely make our summer swim fun more relaxing! Alright–so that’s a wrap for my documenting our crazy. I really do have to order the blog-to-book so my kids can see how we spent our days one day!!!

Blessings to you all!!!

XOXO!

We’ve gotta BIG day tomorrow–so this will be SHORT an sweet–but this miracle MUST be documented. First–I want to thank you guys who have already started praying for the sweet 15 year old who is coming to the Young house this summer. Second–if you shared my blog about New Horizons with others–thank you. I have to share with you that within the last 24 hours–T’s travel is 100% covered! While we were absolutely ready to cover this expense–others have come around us (even some I don’t even KNOW!) and join us by donating to New Horizons for Tetyana’s travel! Can you BELIEVE it is fully covered!!??? Wow!!!

If you are reading this and you prayed for us or you joined us by giving to New Horizons, THANK YOU. I have no idea what this summer holds–but thank you for stepping out in faith with us. We are honored, humbled and excited. And…I am still speechless. Like really–I’m speechless.

And because I’m speechless–the rest of this blog will be short and sweet. That HAD to be documented!

I also have to confess something. Someone sent me a link to a YouTube video this morning. The song was about our not having to do ANYTHING–that He has already done everything. I sat there listening…and honestly…I was discouraged. Discouraged at my stinkin’ right eye blurred vision, discouraged that I’m still trying to figure out what in the world is up with this momma, discouraged we just discovered allergic to my kids dog…I know all very trivial things–but to my heart it just felt big this morning. I had to turn the video off–because…honestly I just wasn’t there.

I told the Lord I really want to trust Him. And then I asked Him…Will you help me trust You?

I feel like my faith can be so small. I wasn’t ready to sing that yet…instead it was more like that old Rich Mullins song Hold Me Jesus:

Well, sometimes my life just don’t make sense at all
When the mountains look so big
And my faith just seems so small

So hold me Jesus, ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace

And I wake up in the night and feel the dark
It’s so hot inside my soul
I swear there must be blisters on my heart

So hold me Jesus, ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace

Surrender don’t come natural to me
I’d rather fight You for something I don’t really want
Than to take what You give that I need
And I’ve beat my head against so many walls
Now I’m falling down, I’m falling on my knees

And this Salvation Army band is playing this hymn
And Your grace rings out so deep
It makes my resistance seem so thin

I’m singing hold me Jesus, ’cause I’m shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won’t You be my Prince of Peace

Yep.

That’s what my heart really felt this morning.

About…a lot of things.

Last week I was praying specifically for what the Lord might want to do with our time with “T” this summer. I was praying over the provision of her trip–I was brainstorming THIS and THAT I could do to help offset the travel costs…and I just sensed the Lord asking me to trust in His provision. That HE already had this. Then in 24 hours from my typing this–her trip has been fully funded. I’m so thankful, humbled and speechless that He is over this summer. NOT TO SAY I’m not scared or still “shaking like a leaf” as this is new to me–but I can trust Him BEFORE His provision–I can trust Him always.

And you can too.

Isn’t that amazing???

And something else that is amazing about this weekend is…

1. My sister had the bright idea to exchange my niece for THESE TWO…

…for my niece! Can you tell by the 2nd picture that someone is 2 years old at our house:). Not sure about my sister’s house–but mine is pretty quite tonight:)

2. We are hosting the fantabulous African American Family Fellowship tomorrow night at our house!!! VERY excited to pack out the house with lots of local adoption families!!! I’m sure we’ll have pictures to follow:)

…and…

3. Aunt Reid (Richard’s sister–Ann Reid…but we call her Aunt Reid b/c Aunt Ann Reid is TOO hard to say) came to get Rosie tonight…JUST FOR THE WEEKEND. It will give this mom time to see if there is a difference not having a dog in the house or not for her allergy symptoms. I called and booked my first shot appointment–just not sure we can part with her. One crazy day at a time over here!

Now…off to rest for the big soccer and baseball game tomorrow!

You never see a pic of Rico Suave and I together do you??? We grabbed this last week at our little town’s festival while watching the kids play…

Y’all have a GREAT weekend!!!
