Changing Seasons, Changing Styles: Your Baby's Cozy Wardrobe Transition Guide

Hey there, sweetheart! How's everything going on your end? I hope you and your little bundle of joy are doing great. Today, let's talk about something that's close to every parent's heart—transitioning your baby's wardrobe as the seasons change and they grow. I've got your back, just like your big sis would.

The Seasons, They Keep on Turning

Isn't it amazing how quickly time flies, especially when you're watching your little one grow? Our babies change faster than the seasons, and that means their wardrobe needs some attention, too.

When to Make the Move, Size Wise

Alright, mama bear, let's talk specifics about when to make that transition in your little one's wardrobe as they grow from a baby into a toddler. This can be a bit of a puzzle, but I've got some handy tips to make it a breeze.

1. Keep an Eye on Length and Fit

First things first, pay close attention to how those cute onesies, jumpsuits, and pants are fitting. When you notice that your baby's outfits are getting snug around the arms, legs, or tummy, it's a clear sign that they're ready for the next size up. You don't want them feeling constricted in their clothes; comfort is key.

2. Check the Age and Weight Recommendations

Most baby clothing brands include age and weight recommendations on their labels. These guidelines are super helpful when deciding if it's time to move to the next size. Keep in mind that every baby grows at their own pace, so these recommendations are just that—recommendations. Trust your instincts, and if you think your little one needs a bigger size, go for it!

3. Seasonal Changes Matter

Consider the season when making the transition. If your baby is about to outgrow their current size and a new season is approaching, it might be the perfect time to switch sizes and select clothing suitable for the upcoming weather. For instance, when summer turns to fall, you'll want to have those cozy, long-sleeve options ready.

4. The Diaper Factor

Take a peek at your baby's diaper situation. If you notice that diaper changes are becoming a bit more challenging or that the current size isn't covering properly, it could be a signal that it's time to size up. You want those diaper changes to be a breeze for both you and your little one.

5. Baby's Mobility

As your baby starts crawling, standing, and taking those wobbly first steps, their wardrobe needs to support their newfound mobility. Look for clothing with stretchy materials and room to move. Trust me; you'll appreciate outfits that can keep up with your active explorer.

6. Don't Rush It

While it's essential to keep your baby comfortable in well-fitting clothes, remember not to rush the process. Babies grow quickly, but there's no need to jump to the next size the minute they seem a bit snug. As long as they have some room to wiggle comfortably, you're doing just fine.

So, there you have it, dear friend—some guidelines on when to make the move from baby to toddler clothing sizes. Trust your instincts, enjoy this beautiful journey of watching your little one grow, and embrace each moment as it comes. Remember, I'm here to support you every step of the way. You've got this! 😊

Practical and Adorable Picks

When you're shopping for your growing tot's wardrobe, think practicality mixed with a whole lot of cuteness. Elastic waistbands, roomy shirts, and comfy leggings are the way to go. Babies are explorers, after all, and they need outfits that can keep up with their adventures.

A Dash of Sentimentality

And before you donate or store those tiny baby clothes, take a moment to cherish the memories they hold. Every outfit tells a story of your baby's journey, and sometimes it's hard to let go. It's okay to keep a few for those sentimental days.

Ready to Dive In?

So, what do you say, dear friend? Ready to dive into your baby's closet and make the seasonal switch? Don't worry; you've got this! And if you need a little extra guidance or a virtual hug, I'm right here, cheering you on.

Remember, parenting is a beautiful journey filled with ups, downs, and adorable baby clothes. Cherish every moment, and let your baby's wardrobe evolve just like they do. Until next time, take care, and enjoy those cozy wardrobe moments!

P.S. If you're feeling adventurous, check out our latest cozy arrivals, perfect for the upcoming season. Just a little click away from adorable and practical baby fashion. 😉

7 Ways To Quickly Prioritize Yourself As A Parent

As a parent, sometimes it feels like "go, go, go" and at the end of the day, maybe it feels like there's too much to do and not enough got done. For that, I'm sorry. I'm sorry society has failed you and made you think that nothing you do is ever enough, I'm sorry that it's become a comparison of "who did it better" to try and keep up with social media and family and the Jones's. You deserve to be loved as you are, and you deserve to love and prioritize yourself. (Easier said than done, especially when it feels like just another task that needs to be done)

That said, there are some small things that can be done to bring you back into the present moment, and hopefully help to prioritize yourself.

Make time for yourself each day - Even if it's just 2 minutes, make sure to take a few moments to do something that you enjoy. This could be reading, listening to music, or whatever it is that relaxes and refuels you.

Take in the moment - look around right now and find 3 things that are green. Now can you find 3 things that are orange. Now breathe. You've brought yourself into the present. (good job, love.)

Seek out gratitude - What is 1 thing you like about yourself? Not something that you do that serves other people, but something about you. "I like that creativity sparks my soul." or "I love the joy I feel when my child smiles"

Take stock of how you're feeling - feelings aren't inherently good or bad, they just are. So what are you feeling right now?

Be kind to yourself - you're doing a great job and I'm proud of you.

Connect with other parents - Building relationships with other parents can be a great source of support and encouragement.

Celebrate small wins - Don’t forget to take time to celebrate the small successes, like finally getting the kids to sleep or having a successful dinner.

I don’t know about you, but the idea of homeschooling my children gives me anxiety! Although I went to school to become a daycare teacher, I always imagined having that separation between home life and work life. I thought that planned activities and more rigid schedules were meant for a school setting and then when I was at home with my kids I would get to teach them the basic skills of life. With this mindset, I decided that while being a stay-at-home mom, I would not stress myself out about planning specific learning activities. Instead, I would continue to put my focus on teaching my children practical activities at home. Although we don’t generally think of household “chores” as learning, there are still plenty of important lessons that our children get out of them.

Baking or Cooking

You don’t have to go out of your way to find specific meals or desserts to make with your kids! You can have them help out with meals you’re already planning to make for the whole family. Baking and cooking is the first of the practical activities on this list for a good reason! Many people grow up not knowing how to! The truth is, children are more capable than we think. With the right guidance, your children could be learning various kitchen tasks such as cutting, spreading, mixing, sifting, measuring, etc. There is no limit! The key to success with this is following your child’s cues for what they are ready to learn.

In case you were wondering what your children are learning while helping in the kitchen, here are just a few skills:

Math skills — counting, fractions, measuring, sequencing, shapes

Problem solving

Increasing vocabulary (learning new words)

Chemistry & Science — making predictions and learning how food changes while cooking

Health lessons

Motor Skills — whisking, measuring, pouring, sifting, rolling

Responsibility

Cooperation

Sharing

For more information on this, check out Apartment Therapy’s post on what kids learn while cooking!

Cleaning

Helping with cleaning chores is a great practical activity to involve your children in! Simple tasks like laundry, dishes and decluttering can all be modified for any age, even for a 2 year old! In our home, Atlas (2) helps load the washing machine with clothes and press the start button. And he loves it! Making their bed, wiping down tables and cleaning windows are a few more things that your children are able to help out with as well!

These are some of the skills your child is learning when helping with cleaning the house:

Responsibility

Math Skills — sorting (laundry), sequencing (the correct order in how things are done (first wash, then dry, then put away)

Motor Skills — Using a broom!

Creating Habits for their future

Safety Principles — washing dishes, what to do with sharp items

Listening and Following Instructions sequencing

Organization

Teamwork — cleaning an entire house is a shared responsibility!

Attention to Detail

Pride and Ownership in their accomplishments

Need a cleaner that is toxin free and kid friendly? Try the Thieves essential oil cleaner!

Gardening

Gardening can be a great activity to help you relax. The visuals and scents from plants are very pleasing to most. It is also a great way to grow your own vegetables and spices right from your own backyard!

Here are a few of the skills your kids learn from gardening:

Geography — learning where plants come from and conditions of that area that cause them to thrive

Responsibility — ensuring that their plants don’t die

Creativity

Nutrition

Science and Discovery — learning the life cycle of plants and what helps them grow

Literacy — there are so many different names to plants

Sensory Stimulation (visual, scents, textures)

Did you know that a number of house plants are actually great for air quality? Many are even capable of growing with low light!

Personal Care

Most people already take the time to teach their children personal care tasks without even thinking about it. Dressing themselves, brushing teeth, washing hands, tying shoe laces and even cleaning their hair properly are all things that don’t come naturally to children. It is something that they learn, and there are many skills that come out of it as well!

Our children learn about these skills and more while practicing personal care:

Understanding Health

Hygiene

Motor Skills (like then brushing teeth or using zippers!)

Responsibility

Pride in their accomplishments

Taking Care Of A Pet

The last of the practical activities I have added to this list is taking care of a pet. Whether you already have a pet or plan on getting one, they are the ultimate lesson provider for children of all ages! Going for walks, cleaning up behind, feeding and playing with a pet all teach our kids different skills. These skills can be applied to their every day lives! Even the loss of a pet acts as a learning experience for our children.

Here are some specific skills your children learn while caring for pets:

Pride and Ownership

Responsibility

Patience

Respect

Physical Activity

Social Skills — Compassion, Trust, Loyalty, Empathy

Learning doesn’t have to mean sitting down and filling out a worksheet. It doesn’t only happen when you spends tons of money on sensory bins or educational apps. It is not something we should stress over, as parents nor as kids. Children are resilient. With or without a physical classroom, they will manage to learn the skills that they need to thrive, one way or another. As a parent, it is your job to be there for your children and show them the way. It is great if you are someone who loves to be creative and set up crafts, but if not, that doesn’t make you a bad parent! Your children are going to learn, give them opportunities in your daily life and they will flourish. No extra stress needed!

Bedtime with one child? That can be stressful! Bedtime with two children? It’s a handful! I’ll be honest, we’ve had a lot of trial and error with our bedtime routine, but I think we finally found something that works for us (for now!). Our Bedtime Routine consists of me assisting my babies to sleep (because they’re not this little forever!) and a whole lot of time management. If you’re hoping for the answer’s on how to get your baby to sleep on their own without assistance, you’re out of luck here. I can however direct you to check out Taking Cara Babies’ Sleep Programs. But, if you’re just looking for a way to balance putting multiple children to sleep, this is your guide!

Putting Two Children To Bed (In The Same Room)

Bedtime Snack

Usually before bed, I like to give the kids a somewhat light stack to make sure that their tummy’s are filled. Sometimes we will eat fun things like chips or a cookie while watching a movie, but most of the time we like to eat some yogurt! It’s healthy and has just enough in it to keep them from being hungry throughout the night.

Brushing Teeth

I’ll admit it, sometimes throughout the chaos of the day I forget to add this to our routine, but Atlas often reminds me. He really enjoys brushing his teeth since he got a new tooth brush! You know, those electric ones with the really cool spider-man on it?! Ever since before he even turned one, Atlas has been a huge fan of brushing his teeth so its never been hard to incorporate it into our routine. Axel, on the other hand, has only two teeth right now and doesn’t care much for tooth brushing. He just likes to chew on the toothbrush. Once he gets more teeth, I’ll be a little more persistent on how he brushes.

Diapers and PJ’s

We have no specific order in how we do this, I just take whichever child is not preoccupied by toys first and change them. Sometimes there is simplicity in the mess we call home!

Prepare Milk.

Both Atlas and Axel drink milk at bedtime. After the boys are changed, I will let them play a little bit longer while I prepare Axel’s formula in his bottle and Atlas’ milk in his weighted straw cup. I know this kind of goes against the whole brushing teeth thing, but we aren’t trying to be perfect here, we’re trying to instill tooth brushing habits!

Putting The Youngest Down First.

Axel goes to sleep first, simply because he still needs me to be there keeping an eye on him. Well, that and because if I leave him be for more than a minute he screams bloody murder! I usually have to help him get to sleep so I wrap him a blanket, swaddle with arms out, and sit on the yoga ball. I will feed him his bottle and then since he uses a pacifier, I give him that while I rock him to sleep.

And Then The Oldest.

While I am tending to Axel, Atlas will either lay in bed and watch a movie or read a book, or play with toys in the living room until it is his turn to go to bed. On days that he doesn’t nap during the day, he will just drink his milk and fall asleep on his own instantly! No fuss for mom!

Other days, once Axel is sleeping, I will close the movie or ask Atlas to come back to bed and drink his milk and we will lay together until he falls asleep. He always likes to have his Hedgehog and a special blanket with him for comfort. I try to be diligent about reminding him that once he is asleep I will be leaving the room. If he happens to wake up and I’m not there, at least he has a reminder of where I am so he doesn’t panic.

Mommy Time

Now that the kids are finally asleep, it is time for my bedtime routine! It is a really simple one so I will just list the things I tend to do here for you:

Usually I like to eat a snack, or my own dinner if I was too busy running after the kids to eat my own food earlier.

Wash the dishes or do some other household chores.

Sit down by myself for an hour or two and work on my blog/instagram/Pinterest

Put Electronics away and spend time on my relationship for a bit

Go To Sleep

Occasionally during this time I will practice some form of physical self-care. Putting on a face mask and teeth whitening are my absolute favourite things to do because I can multi-task. But sometimes I like to stretch or do a little workout as well!

What If They Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night?

Currently, I am not too worried about going and snuggling them if they wake up. Atlas usually sleeps through the whole night, or if he does wake up, he’s just forgotten that I don’t sleep next to him anymore so he is pretty easy to help go back to sleep. I remind him that mommy is here when he needs me, give him a little snuggle and am on my way.

When Axel wakes up, it is a little more difficult. We live in a basement apartment so I try and be as courteous as I can. However, if I have done everything I can to ensure all his needs are met, I need to let him cry it out a bit. There are nights where Axel will scream and I will soothe him. Then the moment I put him down he is right back up screaming again. For hours on end. It can get exhausting! In this case, I will lay him down, try and get some rest and go back in the room after 20 minutes if he hasn’t stopped crying. Generally, since he’s already extremely tired and he realizes that he won’t get picked up at his immediate call, he happily snuggles into me and falls asleep.

I know this isn’t the perfect routine, but I’m not a perfect mom. We do what we need to do to help our littles thrive. As parents, our days can be exhausting and we want to get our kids to bed as soon as possible. I used to follow an extremely strict routine, but as time went on, it proved to be very difficult to follow. I had to ease up on myself. While following my children’s cues, I have a better understanding of their tells that they are tired and it makes things run a lot smoother. When it comes down to it, they usually get tired around the same time frame everyday anyways (6:30pm-8:00pm). So, those days where they want to stay up a little later are few and far between.

How do you put your children to bed? Do you help them, or let them sleep on their own? What do you do once they’re finally sleeping? Let me know in the comments below!

This year, is a year for improving yourself. Throughout the year, my main focus for the blog is going to be on self-care strategies for moms. Having been dealing with postpartum depression and other physical health issues after my pregnancies, I have come to realize just how important it is to put yourself first. Yes, caring for your children and making sure their needs are met is extremely important, 100%. As a mom though, we need to be able to function at a normal, healthy level in order to properly care for them too.

2020 is the year to become a better mom by becoming a better you! This doesn’t mean that anyone is a “bad” mom, but we all have our strengths and weaknesses. I choose to be intentional on improving my own weaknesses, for myself and for my family and I would love if you joined me on this journey! I have wrote a post similar to this before (Click HERE to view it), however, now we are going to take our understanding of self-care to a much deeper level.

What Is Self-Care?

The best definition of self-care that I could find comes from Oxford Dictionary which states that self-care is “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” There are three main points that we can take from this, the first being that self-care requires action, so it is intentional. Secondly, it is “protecting ones own well-being and happiness”, so it is a preventative measure. Lastly, it is often done “during periods of stress,” so we can assume that if we fail to consistently practice self-care, there may be negative outcomes that require us to seek that need for self-care again.

I have always been an advocate for self-care, but I never knew how serious I needed to be about it until I had children. As a mom, we are constantly fulfilling the needs of our children and our husbands. We are also constantly meeting the demands of our family and friends who, understandably, just want to be around all the time to support and help you. The person who we tend to forget during all of this, is ourselves. Often, this leads to many moms moving in a downward spiral of being unhealthy, which in return affects how we behave as a parent.

I will probably say this many times in my life, but we need to remember that our children are watching us! The best way to teach is by example. Your children will not remember all the words you say, nor will they really care, unless they see you in action. Lead by example. Forgetting yourself does not make you an all-star mom, it just makes your job as a parent that much harder.

What Happens If We Don’t Practice Self-Care?

I have mentioned some of these before in my post The Importance Of Practicing Self-Care As A Mom, but here are a few examples of what it can feel like when you neglect to practice self-care.

Depression

Anxiety

Feeling Burnt Out

Stress

Feeling Exhausted

Feeling Easily Overwhelmed

Lack of Concentration

Lose Your Sense Of Self

Weak Immune System

Short Tempered

Lacking Personal Hygiene

Some Benefits Of Self-Care

Restore Energy

Become A Better Caregiver

Respond Better In Tough Situations

Increase Your Efficiency And Focus

Healthier Overall

Stronger Immune System

6 Types Of Self-Care

When you break it down, self-care can be broken into 6 main areas, which are, physical, mental, practical, emotional, spiritual and social. Most of us are great in a select few of these areas, but weak in the others. Personally, I am a very empathetic person, so understanding my emotions and what I am feeling is a strong suit for me, but I really lack in all other areas. True harmony in self-care comes when we can master all areas within ourselves.

1. Physical

Yes, physical self-care is taking care of your body, but it is more than just your appearance. Physical self-care means participating in something active on a daily basis to keep you strong. It is feeding yourself a nutritious diet to fuel your body. It is knowing when you are pushing yourself too hard and need a break. Physical self-care is taking care of your body inside and out.

2. Mental

Mental self-care is taking care of your mind, as if it is just as tangible as your body. To care for yourself mentally is to talk nicely to yourself. It means allowing yourself to have a creative outlet. It is stimulating your mind in a way that promotes personal growth. Mental self-care is being intentional and clearing your mind.

3. Practical

Sometimes self-care means more than just pampering yourself. Sometimes it means getting up and doing things that are essential to your health, regardless of whether you want to do it or not. It means taking a shower, getting out of bed and getting dressed first thing in the morning. Practical self-care is budgeting and paying your bills. It can be as simple as cleaning up after yourself or decluttering your room. It is the little things in life that we think don’t hold any meaning, but when we neglect to do them, they really add up.

4. Emotional

Emotional self-care is understanding that your feelings are valid, but not allowing the negative ones to consume you. It is saying no when you don’t want to do something. It is learning to control your anger. When you let go of guilt, you are taking care of your emotional being. Emotional self-care is understanding stress and stressors and working toward letting that go.

5. Spiritual

Spiritual self-care is about going within. It is about forgiving, finding your purpose and finding peace. Whether you believe in God or simply mediate, taking care of yourself spiritually is taking the time to dig deep and search for answers to the questions about life. It is praying and journaling, understanding yourself fully.

6. Social

Finally, social self-care is about meeting your needs from a social aspect. Everyone needs interaction with others to thrive. Social self-care is finding meaningful relationships and growing them. It is about getting out of the house and consuming knowledge, gaining perspective and seeing the world through other people. Spending time with family, friends and loved ones is so important to your well-being. It is also about setting boundaries where needed and respecting others. It is about asking for help and creating support systems.

Like I said earlier, in order to really be able to care for someone else properly, we need to make sure that we have taken care of ourselves first. Over most of the next year, I will be putting a large focus on one of these 6 types of self-care at a time and really trying to understand them on a more profound level. Each week, I will share with you something that I have done to improve my self-care and how you can do it too! Since I have really been struggling with my physical health and body image, I will first be talking about physical health care! Let’s do this together! Be sure to subscribe for updates and different self-care activities we can do to become a better mom over the next year!

Share with me in the comments below your strongest and weakest areas of self-care!

Favorite go-to’s for road tripping with the littles and family:

Road Trip Spray to use for misting the car seats, blankets/pillows and even in the air to create a calm atmosphere, because let’s be honest, road tripping with kids isn’t always easy! You'll need:

4 or 8 oz spray bottle

10 drop of lavender

10 drops of peace and calming

A splash of witch hazel and top the glass spray bottle with water

Head/body tension roller because sitting in a car can be straining on the body!

Deep Relief Roller which is a blend of peppermint, wintergreen, dorado azul and helichrysum to really help ease the body when you’re in uncomfortable positions or have a pounding head.

You can also just use peppermint or wintergreen for those body needs as well. If you do plan on using these topically, a carrier oil is a must! So keep fractionated coconut oil close by.

A car diffuser is a definite must anytime you’re traveling long distances! Diffusing has so many great health benefits and helps purify the air! Which you definitely need when traveling in small spaces! Each oil has unique properties and are GOOD for you! Favorites to use in the car are as follows: joy and orange together, lavender, peace and calming, stress away and even the combo, peppermint, lavender and lemon.

GO ON A HIKE

Hiking is always a great activity to get outside and enjoy where you live. Pick easier trails to take your kids on so that they don’t get too tired, leaving you to have to attempt to carry multiple children home. A good activity to have on your hike is to bring a bag for each child, and have them collect their favorite leaves, rocks, etc. At the end of the hike, make sure they leave their collections so that other kids can find them.

The best thing about hikes is that you don't have to be all put together. Just get out of the house and have a good time, let the kids get dirty, and they'll all want naps when you get home.

PICNIC AT THE PARK

Taking kids to the park is always a great idea, but it can get monotonous occasionally. Bringing a picnic, and teaching your children the art of having a picnic is a great way to mix up the normal park day. Make a special lunch for the picnic and have them all sit around to eat a few bites before they run off to the playground. Use one of Baby Bear Outfitter’s bags to hold all of the supplies you need for the delicious picnic

GO TO THE LIBRARY

Motivating your children to read can be difficult while sitting in your home where they are surrounded by their toys. Taking a trip to the library is great because it provides an opportunity for your kids to read and pick out new books they really want to read. Kids love new things which is why the library is a great activity for your kids.

GO TO THE ZOO

Teaching your children about animals that you've see in books or tv shows in real life is a great learning opportunity.
You might be tired of us telling you, but getting outside will make you feel better! Just try it out :)

We know that things like household chores, busy schedules, or just not enough time can get in the way. If you keep it simple and make an effort to get yourself and your kids outside, even just for 30 minutes, it’ll boost your mood. If you use on of our tips and have a successful outing we’d love to hear about it or see a photo. Message us or tag us @babybearoutfitters

We like to keep a bag full of snow/rain gear in our car so we are always prepared. It eliminates feeling like we have to load up the whole car with stuff every time we want to leave the house.

Hand warmers are always a plus if you live somewhere cold (double layer gloves on your kids if it’s really freezing - finger gloves, hand warmers, and mittens over the top)

Always have a backup plan. I’ve found that often times I get gold faster than the kids as long as they are moving and having fun. There are still times when the cold is just too much for the kids to handle. That’s when the library, aquarium, and trampoline parks become a life saver. If you’re on a budget don’t write these off just yet! There are plenty of discounted or free days for these places to take advantage of.

Tips for Flying with Kids

I have read so many articles and blogs about how important it is to travel with your kids especially when they are young. It helps them to be well rounded, experience other cultures, see the amazing wonders our world has to offer and to be confident in their abilities to explore and enjoy new things. Check yes! I want all these things for my kids even if they are 2 years old and content with their regular daytime routine. I want my kids to learn to be flexible, appreciate and be excited for change and I want to do everything I can to fuel their imagination and love for adventure. These kinds of posts send me into daydream mode as I plan amazing vacations and adventures for my family. However the reality of this daydream sets in once you add the actual tiny humans into the equation.

Don't get me wrong all those goals are good and possible in every way but let's not forget the reality of traveling with tiny humans. I have 3 so it's very real. There are many aspects to consider and outcomes to expect when traveling with young children. The first mental block I have to overcome is the actual traveling part. How are we going to get there and how painful is it going to be? Our family has traveled by plane and car, there are pros and cons to both. For the most part I prefer traveling by car but being able to fly is nice if the driving time would be over 10 hours. Entertaining kids and retaining your sanity on long trips can often be challenging and taking that long trip on a plane adds a new set of challenges. If you are in your car and your kid is screaming you can just deal with it, but on a plane you will start to imagine angry glances and frustrated whispers from the other passengers, or there may actually be real angry glances and whispers. I will share a few things that my husband and I have found to be helpful when flying with young kids.

Bring their car seat on the plane

I have found that bringing our kids car seats on the plane with us makes things a lot smoother. Having their car seat allows your child to be contained in a way that they are used to and comfortable with. They are already used to sitting in their car seats for long periods of time in the car so having them on the plane is calming and comforting. Being buckled in their car seat also helps to prevent the idea that they can get out of their seat from ever forming, which is always a bonus.

Wait to board the plane till the last minute

Many airline companies provide early boarding for families. This is really quite nice as it takes a long time to get everyone situated on the plane and settled in. However the downside is that once you are boarded on the plane there is usually several minutes before the plane actually takes off. In that amount of time your child's excitement of flying on a plane can turn to frustrated squirming, angry outburst or tantrums which are never fun. For these reasons we have found that waiting till the last minute to board our kids is the best solution for anyone with in hearing distance of our child's screams. Don't get me wrong, you should still take full advantage of early boarding. If you are traveling with another adult have them board early with the carry on bags and car seats. They can get everything ready so when it's time for your kids to board the process is calm and smooth.

Pack a surprise pack for your child

Any time we go on a trip I pack a surprise pack for my kids. I get their backpacks and pack books, doodle pads, and maybe a few toys that do not have the potential to roll away. I prefer the travel size magnetic doodle pads over a coloring book and crayons. I just picture my child accidentally spilling her crayons and watching as they roll all over the floor of the plane. I try to pack items that are new or rarely used so they are exciting, thus hopefully increasing the attention my child will devote to it. To make this possible, without having to buy new books and toys every trip, I keep a tote full of “travel” books and toys that I can use in their surprise pack.

Save the electronics for last

Thanks to electronics I feel like entertaining kids while traveling is a lot easier. I could give my kid the tablet with a long list of downloaded shows from Netflix at the beginning of the trip and that would most likely entertain them for hours. However, I am of the opinion that doing so would be a disservice to my child. I feel like my child can benefit greatly from learning how to entertain themselves by looking out the plane window, people watching, looking at everything around them on the plane or looking at those magazines that are filled with things we all want but would never really use. After they have done all this I pull out their surprise pack, we read books, draw and play. Snack time on a plane is always fun and exciting. Only after we have used up all the other entertainment possibilities do we get out the electronics along with our child friendly headphones. Please bring headphones. As much as the other passengers don't want to hear your child crying they also don't want to hear Elsa singing or Talking Tom being punched over and over again.

With all this being said, flying with kids really isn't that bad, hopefully most kids find it exciting and fun like mine do. Being prepared always make the trip smoother and hopefully your child will hunker down and take a nice nap at some point in the flight.

If you've read my blog post on minimalism you know we are on a journey toward changing both our brand and our life due to Nate's cancer diagnosis and inspiration from the minimalists. One of the first steps in this journey was cleaning out my closet and committing to buying sustainable clothing in the future.

I'm currently half way through the 333 project, where you wear 33 items of clothing for three months. While it might sound ridiculous, or nearly impossible, let me tell you that it's totally doable and has already started to change my attitude and help simplify my life.

The best way to thrift : Swap.com

A huge resource during the purging of my closet was Swap, "the largest online consignment shop... Preventing waste by making it easy to buy high quality pre-owned clothes, accessories, toys and games for babies, children, women and men."

I was able to clear out three trash bags full of clothes from my closet! Most of the clothes I hadn't worn in over a year and some of them still had tags. Here are some of the items I decided to say goodbye to.

After the closet purge I bought a few items from Swap to replace some of my favorite items that had too much wear. I also found a few cute things for Emma. This shirt was only $5.60 and I got the tank top blouse along with some really cute olive pants for Emma for $4.20!!! They have insanely good deals for the cutest clothes.

One of my favorite things to buy from thrift and consignment stores is jeans. I hate when jeans stain my furniture and fit perfectly when I buy them but shrink later. Swap has a great selection of jeans and the ones I bought were just pre-loved enough to fit me well without having to worry about them shrinking or die rubbing off.

My current capsule wardrobe

Because we live in Utah and experience all four seasons I kept some summer items for a summer capsule wardrobe and kept winter items to wear only during the winter. My current capsule wardrobe consists of 3 pairs of shoes, 4 pairs of jeans, Hoodie, Jacket, 5 button up shirts, 3 dresses, 3 skirts, 2 sweaters, 1 tank top, 3 dressier blouses, 5 t-shirts, a watch, and a pair of pearl earnings.

I consider myself somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to my diaper bag. Maybe that's because I only have a toddler right now. I prefer not to have my bag stuffed to the brim, because then I basically have to unpack it to find what I'm looking for. That said, I still have quite a bit in there. Here are some things you can always find in my diaper bag:

1. Diaper Supplies: At least two diapers, accompanied by an almost empty tube of rash cream, because it takes up less space that way. I have a refillable wipes pouch (also so I don't use as much space). And of course, the accompanying changing pad.

2. Hand supplies: sanitizer, lotion, wet wipes, and nail clippers.

3. Food/ Drinks: granola bars, fruit snacks, and a snack stack full of foods my toddler

likes. We have an empty sippy cup in the bag at all times, and when my son was younger, we would make sure to always have a bottle on hand.

4. Money: Cash and store/credit cards. Because I'm usually shopping with my toddler anyway, and then I don't have to bring a purse. I keep all of these in a zippered inside pocket, out of sight.

5. Mess supplies: I have a small wet bag for any clothes that may get wet because of a spill or blowout. I also have several handkerchiefs in there because they are more absorbent than wipes and napkins for major messes. (I used to keep an extra change of clothes for my baby when he was younger, but now I don't.)

The thing I love most about my diaper bag is the pockets. I keep all of the above supplies in the various pockets of my diaper bag, freeing up the space in the middle of the diaper bag for anything else I need to throw in last minute.
