Link Spam in Ning Profiles

I am now finding a great deal of link spam in profiles of people wanting to join my network on Ning, Library2.0 . I get around 10 requests a day to join the network. Half of them each day are not legitimate requests. The profiles are usually filled with links to such things as sites selling term papers, college degrees for sale, and other stupid things. The only reason that spammers continue to do such things is that there are enough naive users and just plain stupid idiots out there that will click on those links. The spammers are asy to spot and are very unsophisticated themselves. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do about this problem? I continue to monitor an require my approval for those asking to join Library 2.0 on Ning.

Seesmic - Pick your Flavor! @Askseesmic

I am using what is becoming the best twitter client in the world. Seesmic is now available for Windows as a native application, Seesmic Desktop (Adobe Air), Blackberry version (for OS 4.6 or greater), Android, and the web based version. All allow you to use multiple twitter accounts. All incorporate the new lists features of Twitter.

Seesmic for Windows was just released a few days ago. It is version 0.50 and is a beta version without all of the features of other versions of Seesmic. It is a very nice looking application and will run on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It currently lacks a follow command but is fully functional in all other ways.

Seesmic Desktop (Uses Adobe Air) has more features than Seesmic for Windows but since it uses Adobe Air it can be a memory hog. One of the best features it has is ability to post to Facebook and to separate Facebook pages. I use it all of the time to post to the TC3 Baker Commons page. Seesmic Desktop is my main Twitter tool.

The Blackberry and Android versions of Seesmic have just been released. The only problem with the Blackberry version is that it is only available for OS 4.6 and higher. Many Blackberries are still on version 4.5, especially if you use Verizon. I have that problem. I hope that is remedied soon.

I have Loic Le Meur and the entire Seesmic team to be very responsive to its users. They listen and fix problems very quickly. I am not afraid of beta testing anything they create.

Verizon and Blackberry Curve

I have been trying to get Verizon to tell me when an update for Blackberry Curve OS will be available. OS5 is now out for most Blackberry models at other phone companies but Verizon has not released it yet. It is supposed to have lots of improvements in features and usability. As is typical of Verizon, they will not give any dates or even a rough estimate as to when it will be available. It is out for the Storm. I like my Curve and I generally like the service from Verizon tech support and the people in their local store in Ithaca, NY. Why can't they be more transparent about updates and related issues?

Community Colleges Pave the Way to Upward Economic Mobility

“A report released today by Pew’s Economic Mobility Project shows that community colleges are an important stepping stone for students of all backgrounds, income levels and high school achievements to improve their economic mobility prospects. Earning a community college degree boosts earnings by an average of $7,900 annually, an increase of 29 percent over those with only a high school diploma. For low-income, high-achieving high school students in particular, community colleges serve as a springboard to further postsecondary education; more than half eventually transfer to four-year programs, and three-quarters of those who transfer earn a bachelor’s degree.”

Students and Information Technology: Key Findings

The newest study from ECAR was just released on Oct. 22. "The ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2009."

The key findings are quite interesting. Here are a few of them.

Student Ownership and Use of Computers:

More students are buying laptops than desktops.
79% of freshmen own a laptop one year old or newer.
2/3 of all students report owning a desktop or laptop 2years old or newer.
Almost 95% of students use the library website weekly.

Interactive Communication Tools
Surge in Social Networking websites (SNS) and text messaging :

Over 90% use SNS.
Almost 90% use text messaging.
Use of instant messaging is down to 74% of students.

It is encouraging to me that the study finds such a large percentage of students using library websites weekly. We must be doing something right.

BlackBerry App: Amazon Remembers!

The newly updated BlackBerry app from Amazon has a very cool and useful feature. The app is free.
You can take photo and it pulls up the product listing! You need to click on "Amazon Remembers" to set it up and use it. I took a picture of my Microsoft wireless mouse and within 2 minutes I had an e-mail message from Amazon that they found a similar product on their website. It was a newer version of the wireless mouse. I then tested it by taking a picture of my personal copy of "The Twitter Book" fro O'Reilly . It found it in under 3 minutes including upload time sending the photo to Amazon. This is an interesting feature. Imagine going into a store and finding something you like. Take a picture of it and find out how much it costs on Amazon. I am a frequent user of Amazon. I buy lots of books from them. I will be using this feature again.

Alliance Library System and LearningTimes Offer Handheld Librarian 2!

More people than 2000 people attended the first ever Handheld Librarian Conference in July 2009 which featured a wide array of collaboration, learning and networking activities focused on Mobile Library Services! The Handheld Librarian 2 will continue the dialog with a 2-day online conference scheduled for February 17-18, 2010 and is now accepting registrations at http://www.handheldlibrarian.org. The program -- sponsored by Alliance Library System, and LearningTimes -- will include a series of wonderful keynote and featured speakers collection of available resources, discussions boards, and access to the recording of all live events for one year after the conference. More people than ever are using mobile devices for a wide variety of purposes including communication, internet access, text messaging, and entertainment. A PROCLAMATION

Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour
news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled
with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held
perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data,
we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate
information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires
competency with communication
technologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our
day-to-day decisionmaking. National Information Literacy Awareness Month
highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary
to effectively navigate the Information Age.

Though we may know how to find the information we need, we must also know
how to evaluate it. Over the past decade, we have seen a crisis of
authenticity emerge. We now live in a world where anyone can publish an
opinion or perspective, whether true or not, and have that opinion
amplified within the information marketplace. At the same time, Americans
have unprecedented access to the diverse and independent sources of
information, as well as institutions such as libraries and universities,
that can help separate truth from fiction and signal from noise.

Our Nation's educators and institutions of learning must be aware of --
and adjust to -- these new realities. In addition to the basic skills of
reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our
students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information
available to them. The ability to seek, find, and decipher information can
be applied to countless life decisions, whether financial, medical,
educational, or technical.

This month, we dedicate ourselves to increasing information literacy
awareness so that all citizens understand its vital importance. An
informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our
modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community
institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the
information they seek, in all its forms.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of
America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and
the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2009 as National
Information Literacy Awareness Month. I call upon the people of the United
States to recognize the important role information plays in our daily
lives, and appreciate the need for a greater understanding of its impact.

NY regulators propose pre-emptive checks of gas wells in Marcellus Shale

Energy companies pursuing the Marcellus Shale in New York can expect to face additional regulations, including on-site inspection of certain drilling procedures and pre-emptive testing of air and soil.

Those are a few conditions proposed by a set of draft regulations aimed at prospectors from throughout the country - including multi-national energy firms - staking out land to tap the rich natural gas reserve under Broome County.

The state Department Environmental Conservation released the 500-page document late Tuesday outlining dozens of new steps to protect the environment from horizontal drilling and high volumes of waste it produces.

The report, called a Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement, does not address where additional manpower will come from to inspect thousands of new wells expected in the Southern Tier and handle reams of related paperwork.

DEC officials will be accepting written public comments on the draft until Nov. 30. They will also hold public information sessions, to be scheduled, according to a report from the agency.

The regulations deal specifically with horizontal drilling favored to tap the Marcellus. Unlike traditional vertical wells drilled into pockets of gas here and there, the Marcellus is a vast and relatively uniform gas reserve running under the Southern Tier and throughout the Appalachian Basin. To effectively develop it, operators drill down 4,000 to 6,000 feet and then horizontally for up to a mile. The process is done on a much larger scale than traditional vertical wells, with risks related to excessive water consumption and waste handling increasing proportionately.

DEC officials have watched and learned from developments in Dimock Township, Pa., where Cabot Oil & Gas recently had to shut down some operations after repeated spills and environmental problems. Explosive levels of methane contaminated some drinking water supplies earlier this year. More recently, an 8,000 gallon spill of chemicals used to stimulate well production polluted a creek and wetland.

The spills and related problems happened to come to light in the township 25 miles south of Binghamton as the DEC studied the environmental impact from drilling and pulled together its own plan to prevent them.

"We've put forth a comprehensive review, containing numerous safety and mitigation proposals and look forward to hearing input from all stakeholders," said Yancey Roy, a spokesman for the agency.

Proposed new rules include:

More stringent drilling and casing requirements, overseen by a state inspector to be on site while casings are being built.

Disclosing compositions and concentrations of chemicals used to stimulate gas production in each well. The process, called hydraulic fracturing, is at the center of a national debate over the safety of natural gas production.

Testing private water wells within 1,000 to 2,000 feet of the drill site prior to drilling, to provide baseline information and allow for ongoing monitoring.

Completing stringent plans for water-withdrawals and impacts on stream.

Complete a "Pre-Frac Checklist and Certification Form" to ensure technical compliance and provide information regarding well-bore construction.

Prepare plans to mitigating greenhouse gas, visual impact and noise impacts from drilling, and plans to coordinate traffic and staging equipment.

New standards, including steel tanks and fenced in double lined lagoons, depending on the set up, to store drilling waste.

Additional permits for storm water control and industrial activities.

The DEC's regulatory overhaul began after Southern Tier residents crowded into school auditoriums and town halls to attend public information sessions hosted by the agency in the summer of 2008. Those sessions often became heated, as regulators were unable to satisfactorily answer questions about water consumption, waste disposal, chemical handling and other aspects of large scale Marcellus drilling.

CFP: Handheld Librarian II conference online – February 17 and 18, 2010

THEME: Alliance Library System and LearningTimes invite librarians, library staff, vendors, graduate students, and developers to submit proposals for programs related to the topic of mobile library services for the online conference. Proposals are due November 1, 2009.

TOPICS: The Handheld Librarian II conference will feature interactive, live online sessions and links to recorded events following the conference. We are interested in a broad range of submissions that highlight current, evolving and future issues in mobile library services. These include but are not limited to the following themes:
• Ebooks and audiobooks
• Managing mobile content: eBooks, Journals, video and more
• Mobilizing the library: web presence, OPACs, databases and other electronic resources
• Promoting mobile services and using mobile devices to promote traditional library services
• Information security on mobile devices
• Access to and licensing of databases on mobile devices
• Mobile products and services in the medical library
• Text Message reference service
• Vendor development
• iPhone applications

PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS: This conference accepts proposals for presentations delivered in several online formats:
• A featured 45 minute presentation
• Panel discussion with others (10 minutes of presentation)
• Virtual Roundtable discussions on selected topics
• Virtual poster presentation

I just received this offer in my e-mail. I find it very offensive and unethical. The website says also if I do not tell people that the reviews are being paid for I will receive more money. One assumption I would also make is that if you start publishing bad reviews, you will get fewer offers. My soul is not for sale. Is yours?

This is short e-mail I sent in response to a discussion on Web4Lib-L focusing at the time on the costs of doing Library 2.0 services:

The only real price for the library need be time for staff to learn the new skills needed for these services. There are plenty of ways to provide Library 2.0 services without having to pay a provider for that service. Examples include Twitter, Blogger, Twitter Feed, FeedBurner, GoogleDocs, and more. Also, training and help should not have to cost a lot of out of pocket money. There are many free and low cost opportunities.
