When a baby first starts teething, this can be a frustrating and sometimes scary experience for first time parents. Teething is usually a painful process for babies and no parent wants to want their child endure pain. Since each child grows at different rates, teething can begin as early as when the baby is three months old or continue as late as the child’s third birthday. Some babies are even born with teeth although this is uncommon.

Usually the first teeth to appear are the bottom front teeth and then later the top front teeth come in. Of course, this can differ from child to child so there is no need to panic if a canine tooth appears first. While teething can be painless for some babies, most babies experience pain when teething. Teething rings can provide some comfort to the child while allowing them something to learn to chew on. There are many medications on the market that are safe and helpful for babies who are teething. Much of this medicine is prescription medication, which is good because it’s important to talk to the child’s doctor before giving him or her any medication. Also, it’s a good idea to share any questions and concerns with the doctor about the teething process so that if a problem arises, the doctor can be “in the know” ahead of time.

When shopping for the infant in your life, whether it be a nephew/niece, or a grandchild it is important to take into consideration the baby’s clothing size/age at holidays. If you are buying gifts in advance of baby being born be sure that the infant will fit into the outfit when that season comes nearer. If little baby Jack is due in June and you want to buy Halloween, Christmas, and Easter clothes when they are on sale, be sure to think about the age he will be when that particular Holiday arises. For instance, if Jack is due in June, be sure to purchase sizes 3-6 months for the Halloween clothes and 6-9 months for the Christmas clothes and 10-12 months for the Easter outfits.

However, it is important to consider that when companies put age sizes on the baby clothes, these are guidelines. Little baby Jack could be a larger or smaller baby than average and thus wear different sizes than other babies his age. It is easy to buy 0-3 months for the infant because that is the first size you know that baby will wear, but don’t forget that themed clothing will be worn on baby during those specific Holidays. Little Jack won’t wear a Halloween outfit in July.

At birth the pigment color-making iris cells aren’t fully developed. For this reason, a baby’s eyes are lightest at birth and gradually darken during the first 12 months as the iris thickens and takes on its genetically determined color.

The clarity of a new born baby’s vision corresponds to about 20/400 on the Snellen acuity chart, or is about 7-8 lines less accurate than that of an adult with good vision. During the first two months of life a baby can only focus on objects more than 10 inches or 25 cm from her face. A newborn baby seeks bold, large patterns, generally in black, red, and white, when she looks at objects around her and is able to perceive motion. By approximately 5 months the baby should have developed color vision.

Eye-hand coordination as early as 5-6 weeks, when a baby starts tracking objects in his near milieu and attempts to reach them with his hands, is a vital stimulator of vision development. At about 2 months, babies begin to focus their eyes on the faces of people around them, preferentially a parent. However, the infant’s eyes are not yet well-coordinated when he views objects distant or near and may sometimes give a cross-eyed appearance. Strabismus or inability of the visual pathways in the brain and the eye muscles to coordinate the simultaneous use of the eyes is normal in infants until about 3 months of age.

If signs of strabismus or cross-eyed looking are still present at this age, there is an increased risk for refractive asymmetry in later years. Basic motor skills such as hand-eye coordination at this stage of development and crawling as well as walking later in the first year of life can be affected by squint or strabismus. A visit to an optometrist or orthoptic specialist should be scheduled to assess the child’s binocular vision capacity if difficulty in coordinating eye movement still exists beyond the third month.

When children become more physically active and start to roll and lift their upper bodies, binocular vision and the ability to focus start developing more rapidly. The baby’s attempts to grab objects and move them to his mouth aids both the ocular muscles and visual pathways in strengthening visual acuity, resulting in vision as sharp as 20/40 at six months.

At this age, depth perception begins to evolve rapidly as the child’s ability to judge distances improves and general visual perceptual skills are refined. However, if the child has a squint during the first year of life, depth perception will not develop fully, even if the child’s motor ability progresses normally during the transition from crawling to walking. As many as 4% of children under the age of 6 have problems with eye misalignment, a problem that is not self-correcting.

Vision testing of infants is carried out by means of a preferential looking test in which a picture containing an object made up of black and white stripes and another image that is solid gray are shown to an infant. As the striped pattern is gradually made narrower, the baby’s tendency to favor one picture or the other is observed until a preference is no longer shown for either the solid object or the striped object.

Many pediatricians recommend that parents take photographs of children under the age of 6 without the red-eye correcting function to see that the child’s eyes reflect light equally. Dilated eye exams are carried out in some cases in babies younger than 2 months to check for any serious refractive problems. Another relatively common eye care problem in children is tear duct obstruction; congenital in approximately 12% of children, this condition is self-correcting in the majority of cases. Amblyopia or “lazy eye” is reduced vision in one eye that results from the brain’s inability to process visual information from one of the eyes. Strabismus and other visual anomalies that can give rise to amblyopia can be detected by means of any of the baby eye examinations described above.

When a woman becomes pregnant there are several “How to” books in order to take care of your infant. Even if a new mother has not had experience there are different places she can go to find the answer. What about the person who is taking care of an infant or toddler while mother is away? Does the babysitter or nanny now how to do these things as well? Many parents check nannies and babysitters for their qualifications before hiring them. One thing parents may want to consider in hiring a babysitter or nanny is whether they can correctly change a diaper. Correctly using wipes is a part of this. Here are some hints for those who are new to taking care of infants even if you are not a mother: Be sure to wipe the child from front to back. This is done to prevent infection. Even if a child has only wet him or herself, it is still important to wipe for the infants hygiene. It is important to use hypoallergenic wipes for the baby and make sure the wipes are intended for wiping a baby’s bottom. Other wipes could cause a rash or other health problems for the child.

In general, it is believed that babies start to get colic pains from around the age of three weeks, that gets worse when the baby is about six weeks old and then it usually stops from around 3-4 months of age. It is said that the real cause of infant colic is still being researched and hence not known until now, but there are many theories attached to the reasons for a baby to have colic. Babies can cry loud and continuously for 1 to 3 hours at a stretch which can continue for days or even weeks .The most important advice given to parents during these hard times is firstly checking with the baby’s pediatrician making sure that there is no other medical cause for the baby’s crying and be sure that it could be colic. Once the baby has been given a clean chit then all that is advisable is to keep the baby comfortable and calm during the episodes of crying.

But it is to be considered that most babies react differently to different ways and hence the result might not be the same for all of them. It is advisable to maintain a record of the baby habits and his/her activities. Little diversions in the daily routine can help the baby during his / her episodes of crying.

If the baby is breast fed, it could be better if the mother tries to avoid dairy from her diet as well as many other foods items like onions, spicy foods, cabbage, cauliflower, caffeine, beans etc or foods that increases symptoms of developing gas in stomach. But it is always better checking with the doctor first before eliminating dietary products and even others that are highly proteinous. Bottle-fed babies should have the minimal amount of air that the baby would swallow during bottle-feed. It is advisable to use a bottle having collapsible disposable liners or a curved bottle that are anyway very predominately used these days. The baby should be burped properly and should not be overfed as this worsens the infant colic pain. A normal feed would be fine but can be worked along with the doctor to make necessary changes in formula food also. This has been seen that the more concerned people are in the family and the efforts taken to keep the baby calm actually aggravates the matter. He/ She should be in normal conditions. A smooth car drive or walking in a stroller soothes the baby’s mood. Giving a warm bath, even placing a warm bottle on the baby’s stomach makes the baby comfortable. Baby Swing or a rocking chair are enough of diversions to lift up the baby’s mood. A gentle massage of the baby’s tummy has also worked wonders many a times.

There are lots of parents who probably know how their babies have reacted to infant colic problems. Talking with experienced parents and getting their suggestions regarding methods they have used can also be experimented. There are lots of things that different parents have tried individually and it has worked. It is better to note that not all babies will react to tested methods in the same way. It will help sometimes, whereas some other time it might make the baby uncomfortable. A doctor might recommend use of some anti gas medicine for baby colic remedy, such as Mylicon drops or anti-cramp drops such as Levsin which helps many a times and might not be effective at all during other times. So the best method to deal with Infant colic pain is just to explore ways to keep the baby’s calm and make the baby comfortable. Here, experiences of older parents, does help to make the baby comfortable.

With the recent economic decline, many parents have switched from disposable diapers to cloth diapers. When the words “cloth diapers” come to mind, so do images of folded cotton sheets and safety pins. In reality, cloth diapering has changed monumentally since the era of safety pins. Cloth diapers are now more absorbent than they used to be, many with waterproof layers. Also, when it comes to cleanup, many cloth diapers now have disposable layers that make the job easier. These disposable layers are more environmentally friendly than whole diapers and they are much lighter on the budget.

Because of the chemicals in disposable diapers, the incidence of diaper rash has increased. While this is not exclusive to babies with disposable diapers, some 54% of one-month old babies have diaper rashes with 16% having sever rashes. The increased use of disposable diapers has moved up from 7% to 61%. Babies wearing cloth diapers also have occurences of diaper rash, but this usually occurs from the child wearing a soiled diaper.

While cloth diapers are a larger initial investment, the ability to re-use them saves a large amount of money in the long run. Many different companies compete in the cloth diapering business, so there are a lot of choices. There are many different styles and designs on cloth diapers that can make any child and parent happy.
