Recall- Safety 1st Onside Air LX

According to Dorel Distribution Canada (DDC)'s website: http://recall.djgusa.com/services/productrecall/canada_onside.html

Dorel Distribution Canada (DDC) is conducting a voluntary public notice of the Safety 1^st Onside Air LX car seat model 22142CAGK. Units produced on March 16th 2011 have an air bag warning label in English only and are missing the slow-recovery energy absorbing material required in Canada. Only units produced on that day are affected. There have been no reported injuries.

Failure to follow important safety warnings or improper use of the child restraint could result in increased risk of personal injury during a vehicle crash. Use of the restraint system is not affected where installation instructions as stipulated on the English air bag warning label (which includes a pictogram) and in the bilingual instruction manual are followed.

The model number and date code can be found on a label on the side of the shell.
Consumers with the affected seats can contact Dorel Juvenile Group for a free pad with the correct label and material by calling toll-free at (800) 544-1108 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.

Consumer Advisory- High Lead Content in Pizza Playset or Fishing Game

Health Canada is advising consumers to immediately discard the Pizza Playset and Fishing Game, two toys manufactured by Ningbo Ftz Zhengbao International Trading Co., Ltd in China. Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program has revealed that these toys contain lead in excess of the allowable limit. Children can ingest harmful amounts of lead when they chew, suck or swallow items that contain it.

The Pizza Playset is comprised of a plastic pizza, cut in slices, along with plastic utensils and condiments. The barcode that can identify the Pizza Playset is 094922130778.

The Fishing Game includes a fishing rod and five plastic fish. These toys are designed for children ages 3 years and older. The Fishing Game can be identified with the barcode 094922553980.

So- how did this tradition of eating pancakes for supper come about? Parents who couldn't figure out what was for supper? A busy family with no time to cook? LOL! Well, according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday:

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is observed mainly in English speaking countries, especially Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand but is also observed in Philippines and Germany. Shrove Tuesday is linked to Easter, so its date changes on an annual basis. In most traditions the day is known for the eating of pancakes before the start of Lent. Pancakes are eaten as they are made out of the main foods available, sugar, fat, flour and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.

In Newfoundland, we like to do things a little different! According to Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage http://www.heritage.nf.ca/society/custom.html:

Pancake Night, or Shrove Tuesday, is typical of Newfoundland calendar customs. Derived from widespread customs in European traditions, and shaped as much by religious beliefs as by traditional divinational activities, it is a mixture of traditions, evolving continuously. Shrove Tuesday (named for the religious practice of confessing one's sins and being "shriven" or "shrove" by the priest immediately before Lent began) was a time to use up as many as possible of the foods banned during Lent: meat products in particular, including butter and eggs. Pancakes were a simple way to use these foods, and one that could entertain the family. Objects with symbolic value are cooked in the pancakes, and those who eat them, especially children, take part in a divinatory game as part of the meal. The person who receives each item interprets the gift according to the tradition: a coin means the person finding it will be rich; a pencil stub means he/she will be a teacher; a holy medal means they will join a religious order; a nail that they will be (or marry) a carpenter, and so on (cf. Hiscock 1990:9).

Here's hoping we all find coins in our pancakes!! :)

It will be musical theatre magic this March as Holy Heart High School brings you an exciting twist on the classic tale of an aging toymaker and his puppet, Pinocchio. It’s the heart- warming story you love, but with action-packed adventure and a compelling score of music by Grammy Award Winner Stephen Schwartz, that include the beloved classics, “When You Wish Upon A Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings”.

This family musical is appropriate for audiences of all ages. The show runs from March 22-24th at 7:30 pm, with a school matinee on the 23rd at 9:30 am, and a family matinee on the 24th at 2:00pm. This recall involves a wooden 6 piece train with an engine and 5 cars each numbered 1 through 5. The cars are linked together through magnets attached to the end of each car. The item can be identified by UPC 736788157468. Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that small parts of this toy may separate; these small components pose a choking hazard to young children.

Happy Valentines Day!

Today used to be all about the romance for my husband and I...then our son came along! Don't get me wrong...he didn't ruin the romance! It's just Valentines is now less about wooing my significant other and more about reflecting and appreciating the love our little fam jam shares! For us, this Valentine's will not be a date night....we can do that anytime! Tonight we will have a family date night- complete with heart shaped decorations, exchange of cards, yummy chocolates, and creating loving memories with my two favourite guys!

Recalled Tassimo Products

Tassimo Single Cup Coffee Makers under the Bosch brand name
This recall involves Tassimo brewers and the Tassimo Professional brewer made by BSH. The brewer uses plastic discs (T Discs) that are filled with coffee or tea to brew hot drinks. "BOSCH" and "TASSIMO" are printed on the front of the brewers sold to consumers. "TASSIMO PROFESSIONAL" is printed on the front of the professional model. The Bosch brand brewers were sold in black, white, anthracite, gray, silver, red, titanium and white/gray colours. The Tassimo Professional brewers were sold only in black. The hazard identified is the T Disc that holds the coffee or tea can burst and spray hot liquid, coffee grounds and/or tea leaves onto consumers using the brewer and onto bystanders, posing a burn hazard.

Tassimo Nabob and Gevalia brand Espresso T Discs

The recalled espresso T Discs are plastic discs filled with coffee and used in the Tassimo coffeemakers to brew espresso, cappuccino and latte drinks. The recalled espresso T Discs were sold under the Gevalia and Nabob brands and were manufactured between August 2011 and January 2012. The recalled espresso T Discs were sold alone (8 or 16 per package) or with milk T Discs as part of Cappuccino, Latte or Skinny Latte drinks (8 espresso T Discs per package) or as part of a variety pack unit (58 T Discs per unit including 8 espresso T Discs). Due to a manufacturing defect, the recalled espresso T Discs can become clogged, and during brewing or upon opening of the brewing mechanism, hot liquid and/or coffee grounds could spray onto consumers and bystanders, posing a burn hazard.

Friday, February 17, 2012
Seniors’ Social
Flatrock Heritage Committee and St. Michael’s Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a Seniors’ Social at the Flatrock Community Centre from 2-4 pm. All seniors in Flatrock and Pouch Cove are invited to join us for an afternoon of entertainment, socialization and refreshments.

Opening Ceremonies
Residents are asked to join us as we officially open our 2012 SNOWFEST celebrations. Opening Ceremonies will be taking place at the Flatrock Community Centre at 6:30 pm and will feature a musical performance by Cape St. Francis Elementary Performance Choir and a Zumbatomic demonstration.

Newfoundland Jungle
Please join us at the Flatrock Community Centre at 8:00 pm for a one hour presentation by Newfoundland Jungle. Youth will be given the opportunity to see 10-15 different animals. Each animal will be brought out one by one and the children will learn some general information about each animal and have the opportunity to interact with each animal.

B and L General Contracting and Pouch Cove – Flatrock Recreation present Síochána appearing live at the Flatrock Community Centre on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Síochána are known for their tight harmonies and high energy shows. They play a mixture of Traditional Newfoundland, bluegrass, Celtic, folk and some old rock and roll music. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at Cape Town Convenience (Pouch Cove) and Wilkinson’s Convenience (Flatrock). Tickets will also be available for purchase at Flatrock and Pouch Cove Town Halls on Saturday, February 11th from 12 -2 pm. Doors open at 9 pm.

Residents are invited to join us at the Flatrock Community Centre at 7:30pm as Gary Summers provides a night of Hypnosis Fun. Gary takes his volunteers on a wonderful journey through time and space as they fly a plane, visit Mars, return to grade 2 and take part in a Hollywood screen test. Of course the best part is the finale, where everything goes absolutely wild. His combination of audience participation and interaction makes for a very entertaining show. Bumbleride Indie & Bumbleride Indie Twin strollers

This recall involves the Bumbleride Indie (Model I-205) and Bumbleride Indie Twin (Model IT-305) strollers. The Bumbleride Indie is a 3-wheel all terrain stroller manufactured between January 2009 and September 2011. The date of manufacture sticker can be found on the right side of the stroller. The Bumbleride Indie Twin is a 4-wheel all terrain stroller manufactured between January 2009 and August 2011. The date of manufacture sticker can be found on the underside of the handle of the stroller. The front wheel can break potentially causing the stroller to become unstable and flip over.

Splat Shot - Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman, Splat Ball - Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman, Splat Shot Disc - Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman by Tech4Kids Inc. (Globe Dragon Technology Development Ltd.)

This recall involves the basic product kit containing two red "splat" balls (sticky exterior, light rubber balls filled with liquid) with a black Spiderman logo and two graphic catcher paddles. Individual Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman Splat Balls and Marvel Spider Sense Spiderman Splat Discs, each containing a black Spiderman logo, were also sold separately. Health Canada has determined from test results obtained from the company that the recalled toy contains the toxic substance, bronopol. The amount of bronopol in the product may be at a level that is considered to be toxic and is strictly prohibited in Canada if the substance can be released from the toy on breakage. The Spider Sense Splat Shot liquid-filled balls have demonstrated the potential to burst and therefore can be accessible causing irritation and inflammation to the skin and eyes.

On certain car seats, the rivet used to secure the harness adjuster (also known as the A-Loc) to the seat shell may have been incorrectly installed and could fail. If the harness adjuster detaches from the seat shell, the harness system would no longer be able to properly restrain the child seat occupant. This could increase the risk of personal injury during a vehicle crash.

Safety 1^st Push 'n Snap Cabinet Lock

This recall involves Safety 1^st Push 'n Snap Cabinet Locks manufactured prior to December 2010. The manufacture date is found on the back of the lock as a date wheel imprinted in the plastic; an arrow points to the month of manufacture and the numbers to the left and right of the arrow represent the year. Additionally, item number 48391 is imprinted on the back of the lock. The outer packaging shows item number 48391 or 48442. The product is a beige plastic cabinet lock which attaches to cabinet knobs or handles using integrated ratchet straps. There is a green diamond shaped button on the front of the lock. Cabinet locks manufactured in or after December 2010 are not affected by this recall. The cabinet locks can open easily when cabinet doors are pulled upon. As a result, cabinets that are expected to remain closed when these locks are used may be opened by young children posing an accessibility risk of the cabinet contents to these individuals.

Baby Bibs

This voluntary recall involves various models of children's bibs sold under item numbers 19-1900392 and 19-3018618. Each item number corresponds to various styles and colours. The front of the bib is made of fabric while the back of the bib has a lining made of soft vinyl. The CA number on the label is 56069. Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that the bibs' lining contains a phthalate, specifically DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate), which exceeds the allowable limit. Studies suggest that certain phthalates, including DEHP, may cause reproductive and developmental abnormalities in young children when soft vinyl products containing phthalates are sucked or chewed for extended periods.

What Happened to LEGOS?

LEGOS are a lot different now than when I was a kid! The colourful, interlocking building blocks occupied my time for many hours as a kid- constructing cars, buildings, vehicles, or whatever else my mind could conjure up. Simple products really...

Fast forward 25-30 years...now my son has taken a liking to LEGOS. It all started with a small astronaut set he got for Christmas. It came with a little figure and blocks to create a space exploration vehicle. Cute little thing really! It made me realize that LEGO offers a lot more type of products these days. This particular set was from the line called "LEGO City". He enjoyed playing with the astronaut and space vehicle so much...I thought it would be great to surprise him with another from this line.

So I was out shopping yesterday and saw some LEGO City products. In a rush, I did a quick scan of the different types displayed...fire fighters, police officers, planes, boats...I thought "A police set would be great!" So I grabbed the box and headed for home...

...sounds good so far? Not quite...when I got home I looked more closely at the box:

My first reaction- WTF? Understandably, I just bought a police set...and police fight "bad guys"...which are included in this set...BUT I was completely shocked to discover that this LEGO set also came with a tiny ATM, crowbar, and some cash!! Basically showing kids how to complete armed robbery in the future (see picture on box)!?! Way to go LEGO! I think the set could have been a nice toy without the explicit details on how to pry open an ATM!

Then I find this post from a fellow blogger: http://www.pennyroach.com/2012/legos-for-girls/ Apparently, now LEGOS are gender specific? Nice pink, simple products so girls can like them too?

What ever happened to just being able to get a box of LEGO blocks and playing?

Health Canada Recalls: Infant Car Seat Adapter and Bib

UPPAbaby Peg Perego Infant Car Seat Adapter

This recall involves an adapter that allows a Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Car Seat to attach onto an UPPAbaby Vista Stroller frame. The adapter is two pieces that attach to the right and left side of the stroller frame. It is sold separately from the stroller and the car seat and can be identified by SKU-0091. The plastic pins on the adapter, which the infant car seat latches onto can break. This pin breaking can cause the infant car seat to disengage from the stroller frame causing a fall hazard for the occupant of the car seat.

"Honey Bunny" Infant Terry Bib with Pocket

This recall involves the "Honey Bunny" infant terry bib with pocket. The pocket and back of the bib are made of vinyl material. The product was available in various trim colours and designs. The product is identified by style number BB52 and UPC 773299000524. Products with different style numbers and UPC may also present a similar problem. Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that the front pocket and back lining of the bib contains phthalates, specifically DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and DBP (Dibutylphtalate), which exceed the allowable limit. Britax Chaperone Safety Recall

Britax has announced the following safety recall:

BRITAX has determined that the rivet used to attach the harness adjuster to the shell may have been improperly installed. On the BRITAX CHAPERONE Infant Car Seat, the harness adjuster ensures that the harness straps can be properly tightened and secured over the infant’s shoulders and is attached to the infant car seat shell. As a result, the harness adjuster may detach from the shell. Should the harness adjuster detach from the infant car seat shell, the harness straps will not properly secure the child, resulting in increased risk of injury in a vehicle crash.

Affected models were manufactured between September 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, and include the following model numbers: E9L692J, E9L692K, E9L692L, E9L692M, E9L952J, E9L952K, and E9L952L.

To address this issue, BRITAX is providing a remedy kit including a harness adjuster kit and instructions for properly installing it. All CHAPERONE Infant Car Seat owners should confirm whether their child restraint is affected by verifying the date of manufacture and model number. No later than February 6, 2012, remedy kits and instructions for using them will begin shipping to all registered CHAPERONE Infant Car Seat owners with affected seats.

Groundhog Day- February 2nd

Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter-like weather will soon end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks. Time 4 Crafts Kid's Apron

This recall involves a children's craft apron sold under the name "Time 4 Crafts Kid's Apron". The apron is yellow vinyl with blue trim, ties around the waist and neck and three pockets in the front. Tumblekins Wooden Vehicles and Playsets

This recall involves all Tumblekins vehicle and playsets. Each painted wooden toy comes with a wooden character that tumbles and rolls as the vehicle is pushed or pulled. Designed for ages 12m+. Small parts can detach posing a choking hazard to young children. If small parts detach, sharp points can be exposed posing a laceration hazard.

Nitto Bicycle Handlebar

This recall involves Nitto aluminum bicycle handlebars with model number B259AA. They were sold in the following colours: red, blue, black, gold, green, pink and silver. "Nitto" and "B259" are printed at the end of the handlebars. The handlebars can break causing loss of control and resulting in a crash.
