My 11 year old daughter, Sarah, wanted to make me a voki last night. At first I thought she wanted to make me an alcoholic beverage… but we had fun creating a babycupcakes voki (a talking avatar) together, and I promised to post it on the blog for all to admire! A battle of the birthrates is on in NSW/Victorian border towns Albury/Wodonga. According to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Wodonga is winning.

Wodonga’s fertility rate rose to 2.09 from 1.99 with 537 births, higher than the 2008 national average of 1.97. But Albury’s birth rate fell from 1.94 to a below-average rate of 1.87 with 604 babies born, 40 less than in 2007.

There was a story about us in our local paper today. Read it here. But here’s the thing. One of us was wearing shorts the day that the photgrapher from the paper came. One of us nominated the other to be the one to stand up front with the armful of bouquets. And the obedient one of us did as she was told. Contrary to popular opinion around the lunch table today… I truly think the more important people are at the back of the photo! That’s my story and I am sticking to it.
