I was a stay at home mom who had a drive for owning her own business. It was early one morning when I was taking my son to go buy shoes, when in my rear view mirror of my car... I spotted my little guy out of his car seat, standing on the floor board of our family SUV. It was when I had to flip on my turn signal, find a spot to pull over to the side of the road that I realized.. "I wonder if I am the only one who has this problem?"

I went home that day and took out a piece of paper and started to design something that would prohibit my little guy from escaping.

After many attempts, days, weeks, the Baby Huggable Clips were born. At the time my husband helped design all the artwork required for a patent pending, and the information was mailed off. It took about 45 days to receive a post card in the mail informing me, my patent pending had been approved. I remember jumping up and down for joy and at the same time knowing the journey was just starting.

I can remember thinking... this is the best little product and it helps to ensure babies are safe in their car seats, strollers, jogging strollers, basically anything with a 2 or 5 point harness. My product allowed those with feeding issues to remain upright. This is great, but how to I move from knowing my product is awesome, to actually selling my product? Sure, I could tell moms about my product, show moms how my product worked.. but how was I to reach moms online?

I well remember the first stroller group online I joined and posted about my product. The return comments were not what I had expected at all. In fact, I was very surprised that my product was not a huge hit as babies fall out of strollers all the time from removing the shoulder harness straps and falling out. What was the "real" problem for these mothers? These moms did not like the fact, anything placed on a car seat will void the warranty. Yes, it is true, anything anyone places on a car seat will void the warranty. But I also knew it was true, no car seat company had ever been sued in the United States, or had I ever heard or read about anyone who broke the warranty and demanded their money back. Those toys that clip on to a car seat, or that bottle clip, blanket, or extra padding under the car seat, all those things break the warranty of a car seat. Once that warranty has been broken, one can not return the car seat according to some of the manufactures (the small fine print is inside most car seat manufacturer warranty books).

Perhaps if I gave my product away... allowing a new mom to try my product, she might not feel the same way? This is what I did. I made several and mailed out each one with information on instructions to use, along with a feedback form to return in the mail to me. I waited, and waited, and continually waited. It was about a month later when I started to receive emails. No one had returned the form in the mail to me, the moms were emailing me about my new product instead.

I remember flipping through the emails and reading the reviews from these moms. One mom emailed me. "I have 2 twins, when one gets out, the other is following." she kept going on and on in her email of how hard it was to drive anywhere, take a walk with her twins, until my product arrived to her. Another mom emailed me to let me know, "my high chair security strap won't stay tight, your product has helped me keep my little one in safe". Reading through the reviews and then the moms slowly started to post onto the stroller group, started to change the perception of some of these new moms. Slowly over time, my grass roots product was spreading due to word of mouth only. I created and designed all of the website, logo's, and took all of the photos used on my first website. I remember the night my website went live and I went back into the stroller groups, breastfeeding groups, and other new mom groups to post my website was live. I remember the next day finding out I had orders/sales it was April of 2007.

It only takes one sale to start a new business, and now I had proven the odds of starting a grass roots business, marketing, designing and building a website, created the logo needed and was on my way...

I never used any marketing through a company. I started a FB fan page and would do contest to give out a product for free. It was through FB in 2007, that I connected a newsletter to the FB fan page and where people would receive the newsletter that I would write once a week. It was from this newsletter my FB fan page grew. Soon I had customers from outside of the United States. Little by little more customers were coming to purchase the Baby Huggable Clips, and then came along another invented product; "the Houdini Band" to help toddlers and older children remain seated. Once the band was secure over the button, the product became Houdini proof. Parents of all ages were scooping up both products and at times ordering 2 of each. My converted garage became my business hub, where I would manufacture each product, test each product prior to it leaving, to ensure both of my products lived up to their names. My original patent pending allowed for different versions of my product to be manufactured. Having these versions allowed me the right to claim both products were patent pending.

I could never stress this enough, do your research prior to becoming a business owner or inventing a product. One can find information online, through the BBB, or through the state on starting a new business. Find out the legal laws, tax laws, per your state and ask questions. Education is power!

Painted Angel

I saw this little angel and knew I had to have her right away!

She is made from a plaster mix and cement. She did not weigh a lot, but heavy enough for me to unload and carry around to the back of my house. I realized after I snapped this photo, I did not get her face but the opposite side.

I mixed my own DIY chalk paint and since I wanted to ensure I was able to really give her wings a complete make over, using my hand, fingers and thumb seemed to be a great option. Since I am working with DIY chalk paint, the paint comes off really easy with a light scrub.

Here she is with her knew coat of chalk paint. I even did her lips, toes, and provided just a hint of pink and white chalk paint to the outer rim of her wings. I thought she turned out darling...

The little angel did not come with this stand, I found this stand at another tag sale. I combined the same chalk paint using a mixture of pink and white to go around all the edges of the stand, so they match. Ignore my painted rug, its where the work takes place to save my cement porch.

I had this angel for a few days, prior to being sold for an upcoming Mother's Day gift. Lucky mom!

Daddy and Me

I received some photos the other day, and to my surprise, was a photo from my childhood of my father and me. I am around seven years old in this photo. The boy in the purple shirt is my cousin Rick. I am not sure why Rick got the comfortable rocking chair and my father and me are sitting on a metal chair? My father is wearing the watch he received from his parents for his high school graduation. My father told me as we were looking at this photo, the watch was his favorite gift from his parents. My father's mother (my grandmother) passed away right after I was born. I only knew of her by photos, and my grandfather passed away when I was a younger woman. My father told me he was 28 years old in this photo. When I saw this photo, the missing mustache is the first thing I noticed different about my father. My father was everything to me when I was a little girl and still is to this day.

My father came to town a year ago and we were able to spend time with one another. My father moved away 15 years ago to a warmer climate. I miss being able to run over to his house still to this day. We do speak on the phone monthly, and keep in touch through email, however it is not the same as actually being able to give someone a huge hug :(

I use to joke with my father about his "nerd pocket," every shirt he owned was equipped with all sort of writing pens and pencils, a hair comb, and at one point an extendable ruler. My father in this photo is 75 years of age and the last surviving member of his own family. My uncle Kenny (my fathers brother) passed away several years ago, Kenny's wife and their only son soon followed his death.

Dining room hutch to Shabby Chic Desk

The photo below is not the actual piece of furniture I purchase, but similar to the piece I purchased. As I was unloading what I purchased, the top dropped to the ground and broke into several pieces- the photo below is to give you a mental picture so you can see what I have done.

When I look at furniture, I do not look at the flaws a piece may have. What I am actually looking for is how to turn the piece of furniture into something unique. The piece I purchased had been listed as a curio cabinet and under cupboard.

The furniture I purchased had solid sides and no glass. I was glad too because when the top part dropped off the back of the truck, it would of been a huge mess to clean up glass. The front legs on this cupboard are not the same as the piece that I did purchase. The legs on the original piece of furniture I purchased were the same in the front as the back. You can see below the original bottom piece, the legs, and the drawer.

When the top fell off, this is what the bottom ended up looking like. I filled the holes in the top where the top had been attached. I loved the legs on this piece too. Here you can see the actual legs. Ignore my painted rug. I use this rug outback to place all my furniture on to help absorb paint spillage.

Once all the holes were filled on top. I got to work with while chalk paint. I mixed my own chalk paint by using 2 cups of water, mark line on a container where the 2 cups come to (I used a black marker on the inside of my container) dump the 2 cups of water out in the sink. Use 3 TBS of cornstarch and add 1/4 cup of water and mix well. Now add 2 cups of desired paint back into your container to the 2 cup line. Stir well and you have DIY chalk paint. After I had painted the entire bottom piece with white chalk paint (allowing dry time). I mixed up 2 more containers of chalk paint in different colors of pink. I used both colors of pink chalk paint on the desk, allowing both to dry. Once the paint is fully dry, I used a brick out of my yard to score a diamond pattern to the desk drawer and to pull of the paint in some other areas. I used a fine sand paper on the corners and the legs.

I simply adore this new Shabby Chic desk with the pink crystal door pulls. The desk is 2 feet across the front and the back, 32 inches on each side, and stands 27.5 inches tall. Perfect for a nook area, entry area, or to be used as a makeup table in a young ladies room. It is the perfect desk height and the drawer is very roomy inside. A clear seal was used on top of the desk.

Below is a few more pieces I have had fun with!

This was a little stool and I thought it would be so cute with pink chalk paint and distressed. Its now a Shabby Chic plant stand. I used a stencil across the top and on the bottom shelf. I placed a clear coat of sealant over the entire plant stand.

Below is a plain old normal bar stool that I found at a garage sale. I mixed up some DIY chalk paint and got to work on this little bar stool. The finished product is another Shabby Chic plant stand.

I used the same brick out of my yard to pull the paint back off to expose the white of the legs through the paint. I used a stencil across the top of the stool. A little light sanding on the legs for a total distressed look, and this piece was complete. I thought this little stool turned out very adorable.

Vintage Apron

2 Shirts, 1 Skirt re-purposed into a Vintage Apron

You probably have some older clothes hidden in the back of your closet that are really adorable, maybe too big or too small, out of style or perhaps you just can't bare to part with them. Here is a really cool re-purpose which will allow you to again wear these clothes. So now you can wear all those clothes that are either too small or too big and you just can't part with them or when you shop at Goodwill.

I just fell in love with the skirt and the shirt with ruffles. The size of the skirt and ruffled shirt was very small, too small for me but I couldn't resist the colors of spring. I snagged the aqua blue t-shirt from Goodwill Despite I could not fit into these clothes, didn't mean I couldn't figure out a way to wear them !

I removed the zipper from the back of the skirt and measured the half way mark from (L) side to (R) side on my hips. I then cut the extra material away from the back of the skirt. The ruffled shirt (adorable). Both sleeves were totally removed and the entire back was cut away, leaving only the front of the shirt and the ruffles and the neck line. The top of the ruffled (new shirt) was then sewn into the the new skirt. The blue t-shirt serves as the belt. I cut the entire back of the t-shirt and made strips and sewed all the strips together until I had one long piece. I measured the half way mark to find the center on the ruffled shirt, and the new bottom portion of the skirt. Pin in place and sew across the top of the ban and across the bottom of the ban.

I took a one inch seam around the sides of the skirt. Since the ruffled shirt had a neck already there was no need to use anymore of the aqua t-shirt to create a new neck tie. If your shirt does not have a neck line, you will have to use the front of a t-shirt to create a tie that matches the ban across the front. The skirt already has a hem so need to sew a new one unless the skirt is too long If this is the case, measure at knee length and cut the skirt at the measured length.

Here it is, a new vintage apron that simply is adorable. Make some up for gifts to give to a neighbor or for your co-worker. I thought a really cute basket with a decorated recipe card, all the necessary items to make the recipe and a re-purposed apron would make a wonderful gift to give to anyone who loves to bake or is learning, or who just got married.

Easy DIY Fence

My yard is a small postage stamp lawn and because of this, I did not want to spend a lot of money trying to keep people off of my yard while I grew new grass.

Here is the awful mess by my walkway which created a huge mess of mud every single time it rained outside.

My cheap solution:

These are bamboo stakes for plants sold at the local Walmart store for $3.49 for a big bundle. I used green twine to hold the stakes together; also sold at Walmart for $1.39 and this they will not fall over.

Remove the bamboo plant stakes from package and insert into ground. Use the green twine to weave in and out of each plant stake to hold them all together.

When finished, re-purpose and use for:

plant stakes, or to hold up garage sale signs, make a kite, use to hold wind mills children make, or to hold up a bird house off the ground. Help your child craft up a raft and float it in a bucket of water or near by stream. The idea's are endless and the cost is so cheap.

These are the best infant pacifier holders and stay put during the night. Easy to wash up after spit up and spills from bottles. The Sassy Passy can snap to high chair stroller, car seat, and easy to keep off the floor where many germs lurk.

When I created the Sassy Passy Infant Holder I had infants in mind of using my product. Never realizing after pacifier use, this one product can convert to many other uses. One use is holding a blanket to the side of a stroller which helps keep the blanket off the ground. Can attach to car seat side for the same purpose.

Mom's can also use Sassy Pacifier holder on the stroller to hold a purse while out shopping (just please use with caution) as stroller can tip if purse, grocery bag or anything else has a lot of weight.

Paint your fingernails as you normally would do. Take a second light color and go over the tips, allow to dry with this second tip coat. Repeat this process one more time.

Now once the tip color is dry. Take what tip color you are wanting to use and paint this over the first tip coat.

The underline first tip coat becomes your guide.

Wait until fully dry and you are sporting a brand new nail look.

DIY designer floor in a snap !

DIY designer floor in a snap !

See this floor, yuk ! Right? This is what my children and myself have had the pleasure of walking on for almost 9 months now. The cracks are so bad in this tile that when I would try to wash this floor the tile would come up.

It was a never ending struggle of putting the pieces of broken tile back. Talk about hurt toes as well.. OUCH !

Look at what I did in less than a few minutes..

You are never going to believe what this is on the floor.... are you guessing right now ?

I love this pattern and it comes in all sort of designs, it's durable too.

The designs are endless and boy did it sure ever change my floor in just a few minutes per tile.

Instructions:

Make sure you clean your tile floor with vinegar and water. You can do this per tile as you go and use a clean rag to wipe all the dirt back up, after a really good cleaning. If you have a steam mop, this would work just as well.

Take your designer packing tape and start laying down tile by tile. Stand back and you have instantaneously created a brand new floor for yourself.

Call some of your friends over, serve wine, cheese, and have designer packing tape party. LOL

I am going to keep doing my floor until it's completed. This is the designer packing tape I selected. I fell in-love with the design and my kitchen cabinets are white. Having this on the floor means that now I can paint the walls a very deep burgundy which will set off the whole kitchen.

My appliances are black as well, so having this on the floor gave my floor a whole new look. I am going to have to Google on how I can seal each tile, but I am sure I will find a way...

Run and give your tile a make-over !

Shopping Tote

Shopping Tote

Here is a little tote I whipped up today using my favorite fabric. I use to have this fabric hanging up in the windows of my little boutique store in TN. The outside of the store had all sort of black dots on the outside of the house. Inside the little house was filled to the brim of all sort of little boutique goodies.

I will have to take a better picture of this little shopping tote. Would be fun to take tag sale shopping, antique shopping. It's just the right size, not too big or too small.

Here are a few pictures of my little boutique store in TN.

This is my youngest daughter Kristina standing outside on the covered porch. She was about... 6 years old when this picture was taken. She will be a freshman this year and 15 in October. Wow, how the time goes by so quickly.

See the little house, it's PINK... The inside was very tiny. Just enough room for all those goodies and deliciousness chocolates that I had shipped in from a wonderful chocolate company. I think I had a new sample every single day...

Close up of the black dots on the side of the house. I had to special order these dots from a printing company in TN. Each dot came on a huge sheet and I had to peel each each dot off of the sheet and manually adhere them to the side of the house. I had to smooth out all the tiny little bubbles too.

I had this vision inside my head of a little PINK house with black polka dots on the outside and everything inside really adorable. Not how the inside turned out.. because it was stuffed full to the brim inside.. but still I was very proud of this little store.

I do not have any pictures from inside the store. Not after it was completed. Here is one picture I dug up of the start of the construction from the inside.

The little house use to be a beauty shop. All the hair stations were up next to the wall where the white pipe is (on the right)

The new front door is laying on the floor. Found at Lowes on clearance outside for $40.00. Was not a thing wrong with this door either. Believe it or not, this little house had one very tiny little bathroom. I decked it out in a purse theme..

Fun returning down memory lane all because of a shopping tote with the fabric that hung inside both of these little windows..

Summer Beach Tote

Summer Beach Tote

Last night when I arrived to college our class found out the AC unit was broken. Since we are on the 3rd floor, you can imagine how hot it was. Because it was so hot our professor let us out earlier then normal. I could not wait to arrive home, crawl into bed and just relax in the AC and fall asleep....

Well.. when I arrived home, opened up the door to our house, I realized when I hit the heat that the AC unit at home was broken as well :(

This is the summer beach tote I whipped up today using vintage fabric. I love the fact that it will hold several towels, water bottle, book, cell phone, and keys.

What else is a girl to do while waiting on the AC man to repair the AC unit. This tote did not take me long to whip up. About an hour from start to finish.

I have a lot of card board boxes left over from the move. I used one of the side flaps to create this pattern. This way, I will have it to create more--the same size.

Cut 2 pieces of fabric. My pattern is 20" (inches) wide by 17" (inches) tall. You could cut your card board to 20x20 inches or 17x17 inches so it's square. Half of 20 (inches) is 10 inches. This is the middle of the card board. This is where I set my soup bowl to make the curve in the card board.

Cut 4 pieces of fabric, 2 pieces for the outside of your summer beach tote, 2 pieces for your inside. You can follow the rest of the directions here from Makeit-loveit. (click on link to see more photo's of how to finish this tote)

**If you want a really thick summer tote, please use very thick fabric for the outside**

DIY Packing tape uses

Designer Duck Tape

I came across this designer Duck Tape in my stash of crafts earlier last week. WOW, why was this not around sooner. I could think of a million uses for the diva designs I come up with.

I happen to be very fond of this print... so much so I was thinking this would look adorable inside a white picture frame. A million uses for one single role of tape.

I decided to give my water bottle a new look. Easy to do, just peel off the water label and use designer duck tape in it's place.

I was looking at my old nasty car... would take a lot of designer duck tape to give it a new look. Just kidding. Wonder if anyone has used designer duck tape to give a car a new look. I must look that up on Google for sure.

You can purchase designer duck tape at your local hardware store or Walmart. I think I picked up my roll at Walmart on "Clearance" for 2 bucks about 8 months ago. Must of been when I was getting ready to move and thought I could use this tape for my personal effects in my bedroom.

Baby Booties

My newest grandson is quickly approaching 4 months. I figured it was past time I dust off my sewing machine and whip him up some baby booties. Despite the fact he has adorable toes, in the evening the air is chilly and those adorable toes need to be covered. This is the first pair I whipped up and added a little zebra bow. They are lined inside with airplane fabric that is soft and comfortable.

The second pair I created turned out really cute. Until I realized I had sewn the heel wrong. I will have to create a new pair because I don't think the booties will be comfortable for the (right) foot. Can't have the little guy in tears because his adorable feet are not comfortable. I love the contrasting color of these booties with the bright red button. Wonder what else I could do with one bad bootie?

The third pair I whipped up, I think by this time I had realized what I was doing and doing wrong. Did I mention when I spoke to my daughter, she informed me the baby has wide feet and 4 inches long. These little booties would not fit, they are 0-3 months. How could I have sat all day long and sewn baby booties prior to making sure his little feet would fit these little baby booties ?
They are really cute !

What is it about taking pictures outside during the day that is so refreshing? I was lucky enough to snap this shot prior to the night sky falling. This is actually on the side of my yard and the little booties sat up on the fence all in a row. Looked really precious seeing all these little booties all lined up.

I did manage to whip up this adorable pair of baby booties for a little princess. My grand daughters have since outgrown the baby stages. They do grow up quickly. Maybe I can see if I can't make the pattern larger and create bath shoes for my grand daughters. Or perhaps Diva Bath Slippers. Oh, that sounds so much better.

I feel totally blessed to have such awesome grand babies. Look at those precious smiles. Whip out a camera and they all become so silly, alright so does Oma :)

Everyone participated in making a silly face except little Taylor. She just sat with an adorable smile across her face. I get a chuckle out of the silly faces every single time. I love being an Oma !

Here is Kristina (my last little girl) and baby Luke. Look how adorable he is. Isn't he something special !

All the grand babies have the cutest little button nose and butterfly lips. I have no idea where they ever got those features from...

ASD, PDD-NOS, OCD, ADHD, High Sensory

Under the umbrella of ASD

What is ASD? "Autism Spectrum Disorder". Why is ASD called a disorder? Because all children who are born under the umbrella of ASD have a neurological malfunction in either the "left" or "right" side of the brain that effects everything from; sensory to touch, taste, smells, lights, noises to speech, hand flapping or sudden triggered movements which are called; repetitive behaviors, fixed on one particular item daily and can't seem to do anything else but that enjoy that one fixed item, picky at eating, and there is more. You get the just of what it is not; a "normal" child who enjoys, doing just about anything during the day, one who sleeps, interested in all sort of things, objects, people and places, isn't bothered by sights, sounds, touch, taste or smells.

Lets take a quick test to see how much you know about ASD.

How did you do on the above test? Perhaps you know of someone in your direct family or a friend that is under the umbrella of ASD, taking the test above will be able to help you understand more of the child who is suffering from ASD and help you relate better to the child.

I know during the test, they said there is a "cure" for ASD if caught early. I personally do not feel that the word "cure" as in a pill or magic potion that can "fix" ASD. Children under the umbrella of ASD are all different, and what works within or for one child, does not mean it will "work" for another child under the umbrella of ASD.

Parents know their child, family members are usually very helpful in more ways then one when dealing with an Autistic child, no matter where that child is under the umbrella. Moral support and just being there for any mother under the Autism umbrella can bring more of a blessing, than really anything else. Parents who have a child under the umbrella of autism are over 50% greater of filing for divorce- just the financial drain alone can cause additional problems to an already strained marriage. Why the strain? Receiving a diagnosis takes time, money and can be very confusing for any parent who has a child under the umbrella of autism. Today alone, the autism spectrum has grown in massive confusion because the spectrum has widen so greatly over the last 10 years. Receiving a proper diagnoses might take several trips to see different specialist and this can become confusing to parents and as well be stressful.

Lets talk about educating yourself on what this umbrella of autism really looks like. For this I have included a complete fact sheet: Autism Fact Sheet once you have read the fact sheet, do you see your child on this list?
With so much knowledge at your fingertips (internet) it is always best to arm yourself with knowledge so you can speak clearly and effectively to any doctor you meet concerning your child.

Parents who have children that have eating disorders under the autism umbrella, suffer daily in trying to figure out ways to help this children eat. Children who have oral sensory and oral sensitivities to; touch, taste and smell have to usually get outside help with idea's, special skills and ABA therapy. Some insurances such as state insurance do not always cover the therapy needed for feeding through ABA for both oral sensory and oral sensitivity these children can not be forced to eat. Feeding is a huge control issue to each child under the autism umbrella- regardless if the food is too hot, not hot enough, usually has to be cooled to the right touch, or perhaps your child only eats; crunchy, salty and sweet- perhaps you have a child that only likes everything green, not cooked. Under the autism umbrella these children face a daily challenge of eating. Most restaurants are loud, play music and the dishes banging or clanging, people talking, walking and just the noise alone can set off a major meltdown, or toss off the inner sensory panel that the brain is therefor unable to respond to. Eating for yourself is not a big deal, but when you are under the autism umbrella, eating anything can become a huge stress for the child and parents as well. Some parents are told to try things, but this can become frustrated too when attempts are shot down and attempt just increase more set backs for the child.

Stick together as parents, your child is going to need both of you for a lifetime because autism does not go away- yes, symptoms do improve or can improve with age, but there are children whom symptoms will never improve with age. There are children who are on the spectrum and go in and out of reverting back to what they "feel" most comfortable with inside. Some children can revert along with puberty, causing a lashing back of all sort of symptoms that are old and new- some children enter through puberty and nothing changes.

What side of the brain does autism effect your child? Why is this so important to know? Understanding which side of the brain effects your child has a great impact on the outcome of the proper therapy for your child. An MRI can determine which side of the brain has been affected neurologically. Remember, each side of the brain reports to the other side- when one side can't or signals are mixed up, then the transmitters are then subject to going no where to be read or just bouncing back off. If you have a child with autism under the umbrella than you will see your child; bouncing, jumping, flapping, rocking, banging the head, etc all to try to get body to stop feeling so out of control. Think of yourself on any allergy medication, the one that makes you feel as if your hair is crawling or you might experience your head feeling like its floating off your body- this is how an autism child feels every single moment of every single day. This feeling does not stop or does this feeling go away. Can you imagine !

With symptoms growing and doctors having so many hands in the diagnoses, it still concerns me why pediatricians do not place posters in the waiting room of the, "symptoms of autism" so parents might be able to read these and understand more about autism. Many who are not educated in the autism world or who do not have any family members with autism- or know someone with autism really do not know much about autism at all. Then you have family members who personally know someone but really don't know that much about autism, then you have a direct family who has a family member with autism and the other family members don't really understand or can they support. Autism is a very wide spectrum and can effect children differently and it does not matter about race. Autism is autism and under this umbrella there are different amounts of symptoms, so it can be very confusing for any parent.

Night time; perhaps you have a child that does not sleep, walks the floors at night, bangs head, or rocks, can't close the eyes- children under the autism umbrella can't self sooth themselves to sleep. A parent can restrict a routine but the child is still going to do the above. Ever had too many cups of coffee? This is how an autism child feels at night- wired, can't rest, can't close the eyes and sometimes have such horrible dreams that to an autism child, these dreams are almost real like. If your child is a baby, then it's trail and error in what works best for you and your child. If you have a child whom is old enough to really talk to you about this, don't be afraid to ask what they need to help them. Communication is the key and trial and error along with patience and a lot of reassurance is key here. No matter what, keep trying - stress can play a huge role in trying to fall asleep- try to create a stress free room outside of the child's bedroom. Only the child is allowed to enter into this room. Why, because any outside tension can cause stress and will not help the child when trying to relax.

I am now 37 and was finally correctly diagnosed with Aspergers when I was 34, even though I have had it my whole life. Much of it because I am female. I have struggled with sensory issues all of my life too. Puberty was awful and that is when the eating disorder started. Even eating disorder programs were difficult for me because no one understood me and I couldn't really connect with the others. If I gain even a few pounds, my brain seems to "sense" it as if I had gained 20 and I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin. It is such an awful feeling. Clothes doesn't fit right, seam in clothing seem to catch where they used to not. I was always told to "trust my body" in these programs, but how can you trust your body when what you feel is not what your brain is telling you. When I had kids, I hoped for boys so they wouldn't go through what I went through and am still going through. My oldest of two sons, now 11 is has NF autism, the regressive type. He also has sensory inte
gration dysfunction.

My son also has PDD-NOS. Part of it is super sensitive tastebuds and things tasting “weird” to him sometimes. I would absolutely talk to his doctor before removing him from his meds. It can be dangerous. You do need to express your concerns and get some answers, though. My 11 year old has recently started eating some new things. Hang in there! It will get better!

My son just turned 11 and is 4 ft tall and weighs 60 lbs. He eats only food with pasta, nothing solid or hard. I add a varity of things to his milk so he gets the nutrients and vitamins he needs. He has severe allergies to fruit, some veggies and latex. He also has Pica, he eats wood, paper, plastic, rocks, dirt, anything but food. lol It’s a challenge but there has been a large inprovement in behaviors. He is in a controlled environment, even goes to school via the computer. All things that spark melt downs have been removed and at this point, he never goes out to stores or places that trigger melt downs. Hard, but he is worth it.

My son is 6 years old and autistic, he has never bit or chewed any food, his diet consists of 3 different baby foods (lump free), and forular bottles, he loves to lick chrips and chips as likes salt however will not eat them. He goes to a mainstream school and is doing well. Does anyone else have any similar issues or ideas to help him eat?

My son’s opposite, won’t eat anything smooth. Everything has to crunch.

Omg, Susan! I just wrote a blog entry about this exact same issue. And it’s not the first one. My son is 5’2″ tall and weighs just 89 pounds. To me he looks skeletal, but all the doctors and the BMI charts say he’s a healthy weight. I get so tired of people telling me I should just “make him eat.” I do see the similarities between Autism eating issues and anorexia.

@Jennifer, what a horribly insensitive (and ignorant!) thing for your pediatrician to say to you! The last thing children with autism want to do is go to the grocery store with you! Too many strange sounds and smells coming at them. Too much sensory input! That’s a recipe for a meltdown. I’ve learned to leave my son at home. He eats what he eats. I’m just happy that he eats!

Remember, you are not alone- many who have children under the autism umbrella have feelings, concerns and worries concerning the child they love with all their heart.

I hope my own words have helped someone who is reading this information today. Being educated is key to everything as well as offering moral support to each parent and understanding.

Find support groups online through doing a "search" into your browser. There are so many online groups and information that it would be impossible for me to list them all or suggest just a few, leaving other suggestions out or recommend one group and not another groups.

Nothing like some fresh air..

I stepped outside the other day, to walk my little wiener dogs, despite it's winter time here. The sky was just simply beautiful. Blue for as far as my eye's could see.

It's times like this day, where you can breath in fresh crisp air, look up and be thankful for all that is around you.

I long for summer days, but rejoicing in days like this day where the sky and a little sun, can change the whole outlook on a day.

I do long for the beauty of summer to come around. Each year about this time, I start to miss the joys that spring and summer have to offer.

Feeling the rays of the sun, warm on my face. Singing birds nestled in the tree's around me and butterflies dancing through the air, without a concern in the world.

Makes me really appreciate what all the beautiful things of this world, in a small simply way, really do have to offer to me, each day !

Autism Spectrum ~~Disorder~~ (ASD)

It all started with an incredible little boy, an ongoing problem and a need to solve a problem.

I am not the sort of mother that enjoys "labels" or referring to a person as "Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD". I certainly didn't want my own child referred to as having "Autism"..

For years, I had no clue my little guy was suffering from this horrible word and the effects of "autism spectrum disorder" a few doctors later a label was attached.

I understand the logo design for "Autism Spectrum Disorder", it's a puzzle piece. What people don't understand is the process of which a parent must travel, all to obtain this ~~label~~ of "Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)" for any child. Were you aware, that the warning signs for "Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) " are the following things to look for in your child, or perhaps a child that you know:

Won't make eye contact. (see my little guy above)
Refuses to speak prior to the age of 3 years old. (my little guy, grunted and pointed)
Walks on tipsy toes. Will not walk with both feet firmly planted on the floor
Might refuse some foods or lean towards the salty crunchy foods, like crackers or potato chips.
Covers hands over hears while in a large crowd or where this is a lot of noise.
Fixed on toys that either have wheels or loud in color and will play with these toys for hours at a time.
Might spin around in circles, hit head on floor, flap hands, jump up and down. Look for repetitiveness in motions that can not be controlled by child.
Can't handle changes.
Easily becomes frustrated when something is moved or changed inside living environment.
Has trouble making friends because the child has no sense of personal space of other children.
Can't sleep a full night in bed.
Enjoys small spaces, cat bed, small box, small basket, dresser drawer, upright hamper, wrapped in towel or blanket.
Has a keen mental mind of being able to recall almost all details of an event or outing.
Chews on the collar of shirts, sleeves until completely soaked through.
Knows only of one interesting topic, knows all about that topic and can recite all details of that topic to anyone whom ask about that topic. My little guy knows everything about, "Star Wars".
Can't stand certain material of clothing. (My little guy only wears, cotton).
Can't button clothing, tie shoes and hates certain socks on the feet.
Is unwilling to toilet train. (My little guy at age 8, still is not potty trained)
Has to control the environment in which they are inside.
Wonders away, or escapes the house or car seat, stroller or while shopping wonders off for no reason at all.

Above, I have mentioned a few of the most concerning effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) . Parents need to know what to look for when they suspect or see a child with the above warning symptoms. What is a parent to do... ? Call your doctor and make an appointment and tell your doctor that you would greatly appreciate if (he or she) took the time to look over your child to see if your child falls into the category of having Autism Spectrum Disorder. Test can be performed and doctors can help with reaching a diagnosis of autism. Not all children have autism, some might fall into the category of having OCD, or ADHD or some other form of autism which is Aspergers Syndrome. The only difference I have personally found concerning, Autism and Aspergers Syndrome is the age of which a child starts to verbally communicate. Generally speaking, those children who suffer from Aspergers Syndrome can speak clearly but are still on the Autism Scale.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability of neurological condition affecting normal brain function, development and social interactions.

5% of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are affected by fragile "X" and 10% to 20% of those with fragile "X" show autistic traits.

The annual cost of providing services for people with "Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)" is $90 million, in 10 years, that number is projected to be $200 to $400 billion.

It is said that, 1 in 80 people suffer from "Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

I have read many books online and off line, downloaded countless help materials and pdf files all in my quest to better understand my own little boys world. I soon realized that his world, as he has come to know it, is not the same world in which I reside in daily. It's a new world, a world of beauty like no other world, I have ever known. The details that my son see's through his own eyes, bring a new definition to the word; "beautiful".

A butterfly can clearly be seen by the human eyes. However, through the eyes of an autistic child, it's clear that the cells of the wings are fully expanded. Each wing offering a unique design of colors. The black dots how they line the tail end of each wing and how many dots there actually are. The legs, how they offer a swift bend, close to the end of each leg. How they land, gracefully on a flower. Never leaving out any details of the view from my own child's eyes.

Because of the way my own son views his world, I entered into a new world, of beauty, sameness of routines, meltdowns and non eating.

Despite being newly divorced or traveling through the separation process. I often did wonder about those online dating websites, you see those ads online and hear about on the radio.

Last night, after everyone was asleep. I decided to jump online, and started to look around on a few of these dating websites...

Believe it or not, I went and fetched myself a cup of coffee and sat back and laughed so- so very hard..

I have to ask, "What are some of these people thinking" ? Men in general.. Would post such awful pictures and make these goofy poses up, all to attract the opposite sex (us) females..

Here is my compiled list, of things MEN should NEVER do on their profiles on dating websites.

I will do the count down....

#10. Don't list on a dating sight a picture of you with your great grandma...

#9. Don't list your profile picture with the "Catch" of the day, example, fish, buck, rabbit, ...

#8. Don't take a picture of yourself without any shirt on, especially if you are clearly over weight..

#7. Try to POSE sexy for your profile picture, face up next to a wall, lips puckered, head tilted, eye glasses on your forehead...

#6. Take a snap shot photo of yourself in your bathroom mirror when the reflection clearly shows your dirty underwear and t-shirts and bed unmade in the back ground..

#5. Use Skype to take your profile picture..

#4. Wear a hat that covers your entire face like the kid on "Fat Albert" ... so someone can only see your lips...

Paper Cone Wreath

I have an eye for "art" .. Would love to take the credit for this idea.. But you need to hop on over to Pinterest and check out the Paper Wreaths. In all honesty, I did not see the one I made on Pinterest.

I have a wall that is bare, with nothing on it at all. I wanted something huge to fill the space and bring new life to the wall when entering from the back door.. Let me know what you think about my paper cone wreath.

If you ever want to create one of these paper cone wreaths for your own home.. Here is how I did the one above.

Buy an old book from the Dollar Store. Yes, the one above, had 300 pages on the presidents. I did glance inside and tried to read the first few paragraphs, trust me, the book is serving it's purpose on the wall now..

I purchased a green basic wreath for my foundation at the dollar store as well. However, all you really need to do is cut out some card board to a desired round circle. This will work and save you the dollar. You can make your circle as big as you would like or as small as you would like. My own was about 8 inches round.

Take the book, tear out every single page. My book had 300 pages. (sorry I forgot to take pictures while I was making this so you could see the instructions as I go along)

Once you have all the pages tore out of the book. Take 8 pages, now cut those in half.

You are going to use these pages to cover your circle, front and back. You can hot glue these on because it's the quickest way to adhere the paper to the circle frame. Continue to hot glue the strips of paper around the wreath until the circle is fully covered.

Again, tear about 20 pages in half, roll up like a tube and hot glue these around the center. Once I had these all in place, I laid my hands on the row all the way around to push down so they were not all standing straight up. Take your remaining pages, start at one corner and roll up (like a cigar) and hot glue the corner down.

Once you have a cigar shape, you are going to glue this behind the tubes that you just glued down. You will keep doing this over and over again, going all the way around the circle. You are going to create about 4-5 layers of cigar shape paper cones and hot glue each one down.

After I was all completed with all the cigar shapes, or cone shapes and had everything glued down really well. I took black fabric paint and put this inside a squirt bottle and added warm water and sprayed the whole entire paper wreath. (Since my book was NEW, not old, I wanted this wreath to appear older.. Since this is paper, the black paint mixed with water will absorb. I waited until the paper was dry, and sprayed the whole wreath again with the fabric paint and water mixture. Some of the pages of this book, now appear to be really old. I love how the paint laid on the paper darker in some areas, lighter in other areas.

Since this is PAPER.. I would not recommend hanging something like this on your front door, unless you spray paint the whole wreath with a water proof top coat.. Other wise, your wreath will become like the nasty old witch in the; Wizard of Oz.. "Help me, I am melting" ...

I did add a huge organza bow in black and added this bow to the center of this wreath.. it's very artsy to say the least and turned out HUGE.. to fill the gap on the blank wall..

Here is the wreath while under construction.. See all the different layers.. Love this. (See how white the paper actually is) the paper from this book was WHITE..

A few Gifts for my Daughter; Whitney

I was crafting up a storm the other day, came across a few things that I really thought my daughter would love. She just landed a new office job; "So Proud of You".. This job fits her personality, which is full of love, life and spunk..

She is our little comedian in our family, always so funny !

I wanted to share with you all some of the things I whipped up for her that she can take to work, or leave at home.

Since she has a steady boyfriend.. "do I hear wedding bells off in the distance"... I did a make-over on the little box. What an adorable way to keep all those little notes, movie tickets and trinkets from your boyfriend..!

Here is a list of things you will need for the below Crafts:

Hot Glue Gun
Decorative Scrap Paper
Picture Frame with magnet back
Upright picture frame (standing up)
Photo Frame
Ribbon
Scissors
Dry Eraser

Photo Frame used as a Dry Eraser Board

This is such an adorable way to let your daughter know how much you love her..

Remove glass, remove everything until you see the glass in the picture frame. Cut out a piece of scrap paper to fit your matting. (my scrap has words on it) Take your scrap paper to the back of your matting. Reassemble picture frame. Use dry eraser to write something across the top and the bottom,

This one states: "You Make My Heart Smile". I made a rosette out of ribbon that is black. [You do not have to use a mat] If you want to write on the board, do not use black scrap book paper.

I found these little dress form coat or purse rack holders and thought, I would love to give her a new dress. My daughter loves bright colors and is very fond of "Zebra" print. I laid my scrap book paper out, turned the dress form over and traced around the full lady. I then cut out my scrap paper and hot clued the paper on to the green dress. I then, cut out another piece of scrap paper in Zebra print and put this along the top of

the dress. (Sorry these pictures are so awful, I have been in the market for a new camera)

I added the white fringe and a classy button to top of the "glam look".. I think this little dress form will look really adorable hanging either in her office or home and when she hangs her coat up or purse, she will think about "ol mom"...

Easypiezie craft redo !

I would so love to take credit for this little craft, but it's not of my own. I was scouting blogs yesterday and came across this craft. I will give credit as soon as I can remember who actually did this craft... Right now, I will blame that one of forgetting on old age...

You can see where I cut out the dress form on the craft paper ... bla aha aha...

This is a stand up picture frame. Dollar store, one buck.. 3.5x 5. Remove ad paper in front and lay out on your scrap book paper. Trace around outside edge and then cut with your scissors.

I used the "Zebra" scrap book paper, .59 cents on sale at JoAnn Fabrics this week. After I slide inside the phone frame the "Zebra print paper.. I then, hot glued on a sticky note pad. I wrapped Zebra print around the photo frame, hot glued this into place, then added a Zebra ribbon in a bow and hot glued this down as well on one corner. I then added a disk strung by red ribbon. The words on the disk are those "rub and stick words" This one says; Simply The Best.

I picked up 2 more frames with magnet backs at the dollar store. these are 4x5 frames.

I used the same steps as above, cutting out different scrap paper and added ribbon bow and a button, I just cut off the shank from the back side of the button.

She can hang this one up on her refrigerator for a quick shopping trip. I think these are so adorable and will make great gifts for teachers, mommies, girl friends.. or for your beautiful daughter..

Here is another one I did using the same instructions as above, only I took a small portion of the ribbon and made a loop, this way I can always have a pen handy for writing down what I need while looking through the refrigerator.. Salsa, Ice Cream, all those goodies.

My name is displayed along the bottom with peal and stick letters, JoAnn Fabrics, $2.50.

A little bit of Crafting

This was my old studio. I think I took this picture in October of 2011, I would have to check back through my blog post for an actual date this picture was taken.

I miss being able to grab a fabric and start to sew, miss the ease of just being able to have everything handy and right where I could find something.

It's so frustrating to want or should I say, "NEED" to craft and have to walk all the way down to the end of my driveway where my studio is now located, waiting for a spot inside the house....

Lately, I have been in a craft mood. I have a new grand son coming at the end of February or the first few days in March.. I am so excited !

I must be entering into my "nesting" OMA phase of life. This is what takes place when anyone in my family is expecting..Especially my own grown children. The birth of this new baby, will increase the number of grand children I have to "5".. and counting.. :)

That is me right now, "all smiles" !

I thought it would be cute to whip up a few unique baby bibs, made out of wash clothes. These are so soft and since the new baby is a boy, there is so many I could make in yellow, green, blue.

I have a cute project for a neat gift box, thought I could display the baby bibs in the box with tissue paper and a huge big bow on top.

My daughter, after birth, craves chocolate. Funny thing is, she takes after me... I always had to indulge in a big piece of chocolate after the birth of my babies, or some form of chocolate.. Last baby I had, was; Anthony, after birth, I had a huge piece of chocolate cake.. it was so tasty.

I found a cute project for holding chocolate candy.

Thought the bibs and candy holder would make a super cute after birth baby/ mom gift set. I think I will make this all natural tether as well, in pale blue. What baby doesn't need a new tether that is all natural and soft to chew on as well.

I do miss having my craft room handy. It's now going on 4 months since I have sewn anything or crafted anything.. The itch is slowly returning which is a welcome sign :)

Happy 2012 New Year !

Last year was a year full of changes inside our home. The children and I moved to a new house. I started college, lost weight and looked to the future of hope, courage and strength.

It's been awhile since I crafted. I tucked everything away to deal with the emotional upset of my home life and spend some very needed time with my children.

Paper Birds

Remember when I posted about making these paper birds out of an old book... I was so excited to put these little birds together, they were just way too cute. I actually was able to display these adorable little birds for a beautiful summer wedding, where they were happily placed in the center of each table along with beautiful flowers. Took me awhile to create and craft each bird, but the end results were something to be proud of.

Who would of thought a sucker stick and paper from an old age book could be recycled into something so adorable.

Key Chain

These are so easy to make and fun to attach to a birthday gift, or really any gift or give as bridal shower favors or baby shower favors.

These key chains are so fun to create and you can use paper, fabric, really anything that has a pattern. I love the little pink bows I tied on top.

I think my favorite one is the black scroll to the far (right) .. Love that fabric ribbon.

I made myself a few.. I couldn't resist the colors and just how fun these were to create and make...

Toilet Paper Napkin Rings

Seems like only yesterday I was sitting at the table wondering what I could do with an empty toilet paper roll.. I think, I had far too much time on my hands..

This was an easy project and the napkin rings turned out really cute. Next time,I try this, I will make them 2 inches wide. These are about 1 inch wide.

DIY Cake Stand

My favorite time of the season, has got to be summer. Everything is in full bloom, beautiful and the birds sing to me every single day...

I picked up these items at the local thrift store and turned the adorable plate into a DIY cake stand.

I love the mix matched plates, so full of summer colors and just scream.. Garden party !

The fabric is one of my favorite fabrics. I purchased a very large bolt of this fabric for $10.00. What a bargain for me !

I have made so many craft projects using this fabric and even covered a chair and made a very adorable summer purse.. I love these sort of finds..

DIY Lamp Shade

I had this old lamp shade hanging around that looked, naked.. Then I found the retro Patterns at a garage sale. Cut out the ladies and used Mod Podge to adhere to the lamp shade.

I painted the lamp shade first, the paint was so chocolate, almost good enough to eat. The paint had a sparkle which just made this project even funner once completed. (Is that even a word?)

I adored this little lamp with the crystal beads dangling from the bottom. Just really adorable if you ask me..

Tissue Paper Glass

One of the best craft projects I think I did was the Tissue Paper Glass craft.

I picked up the plate at Goodwill for a dollar, along with the vase which was 50 cents, the tissue paper was FREE, from Victoria Secrets.

Using mod podge and silver finger nail polish for faux beads.. The set turned out beautiful.

So very Shabby Chic...!
