If you use an indoor drying rack that will still allow you to save energy and line dry your clothes or cloth diapers. But what if you want to use the dryer?

Dryer sheets and dryer bars contain a large amount of chemicals that can coat your clothing. These options are not cloth diaper friendly so what can you do? The answer: use wool dryer balls.

What are the benefits of using wool dryer balls? Aside from the fact that they are a natural, organic product, they can actually help reduce the time your dryer runs. The Baby Bear Crafts Dryer Balls we stock are made with the highest quality 100%
wool/organic wool possible. They are a great replacement to the plastic
dryer balls.

To optimize your drying time, use 4 to 6. Using these will also decrease, but not eliminate your static cling and will fluff up your clothes without using a dryer sheet. These are made in the USA from 100% wool/organic wool. The are approximately 10 inches in circumference and come with a one year guarantee. We've been using ours for well over a year now and they still look good as new. They may stick to aplix and velcro diapers so be sure to use and close your laundry tabs on your diaper products. Our tests show with 4 to 6 dryer balls there will a 20-40% decrease in dry time taking into account the fact that everyone's dryer is different and you may have more or less of a decrease in drying time.

These couldn't be easier to use. Simply place the dryer balls into your dryer and let them do all the
work. Using a dryer ball will increase air flow by creating pockets
inside your clothes so the dryer can work more effectively. Wool dryer
balls also will help absorb some of the moisture thereby, decreasing
your drying time.

What a great way to make your dryer more efficient! To get started using your Baby Bear Crafts Wool Dryer Balls, find them here at Baby Luv Boutique!

The Savvy Parent Seminar Humboldt - Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Winston Room, Bella Vista Inn

You've been hearing a lot about this upcoming event. We helped to chair the last Savvy Parent Seminar held in Saskatoon in September 2010. It was a wonderful event that was very well received by the parents who attended. We wanted to build on that experience and provide parents with another opportunity to take part.

As a parent, I felt there was insufficient programming that provided the kind of information new parents are looking for today. Cutbacks in public programs over the years have left new and expectant parents with limited opportunities for first hand information on current topics of interest. As a business owner I wanted to be able to offer something of value to parents in the community while taking the opportunity to focus on a local charity benefiting women and children. We also wanted to do this in a comfortable setting
that makes it enjoyable for attendees to receive that information. Other
businesses I work with felt there was a need to do the same and thus The
Savvy Parent Seminar was born and continues on!

Parents crave knowledge
– I know as a parent I do. Finding the information you seek from a credible source can be an issue and finding the time to research it and either prepare for baby or care for baby can be a challenge as well. By having a
variety of experts available and having us come together in a
comfortable setting to present that information offers parents enhanced
learning opportunities. This will be a relaxing and entertaining
experience that will leave you feeling more confident and informed about
making healthy, sustainable choices for yourself and your family. Having the support of other parents gives you the opportunity to share in your parenting journey whether you are on your way or are right on the cusp, ready to take your first steps down that incredible road.

We took the time to ask our past attendees their thoughts about The Savvy Parent Seminar and we wanted to share their actual, unedited comments so you can see for yourself the value in taking part. Here's just some of what they had to say:

"Very practical information and nice to
hear info the doctors don’t focus on at all.”

“Showed benefits and covered enough to
let us determine at the seminar whether to begin program.”

“Presentations were great!”

“The talks were short enough to sit
     through, but also very informative.”

“I found that the breaks were nice to
     talk to presenters.”

Tickets to attend are $25 each.
What do you get for the cost of that ticket? Attendees are going to
receive a swag bag full of product samples and information that is worth
over $50+ in value, and a chance to win door prizes that start at $25+ in value.
They will get to sample some exquisitely prepared appetizers while listening to a knowledgeable group of speakers. The collective
value of the speakers’ time alone definitely exceeds the cost of a
ticket. As a parent or parent to be, how can you go wrong?

To
make things even better, a charitable donation from a portion of the
proceeds of the event will be made to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. We've been told there is a need for an additional infant warming bed in the Labour and Delivery area. We understand there has already been an occasion where two women were delivering at the same time and one of the babies was not able to go into the warming bed. This could be a concern depending on the situation so we wanted to assist in raising funding for improvements in this area. We want you to know the event is about more than just
a chance to shop for goods and services, snack and win a prize.

This
event is about giving parents an opportunity to be pampered and to take
some time for themselves to enjoy an afternoon while being able to come
away feeling empowered and inspired by the experience. We know how
hard it can be to do that sometimes. You can also feel good that you
are helping contribute to a very worthwhile local charity.

Nursing
babies are more than welcome to attend and we will have some designated seating
within the room for that if needed. Attendees have asked if they need to leave their
small children at home. We leave that choice up to each family as to
what works best for them. If you are a young family and a toddler needs
to join you at the event, there will be a small unsupervised child’s
play area set up to help keep little ones busy with some toys. Scheduled breaks between groups of speakers will
allow people time to mingle, get up and stretch their legs, change baby,
give their toddler some free time, and speak with presenters in greater
detail on topics of interest.

The goal is to offer a
unique, worthwhile experience in an intimate setting while having some
fun along the way. We've again chosen to keep the event size small to avoid the hectic pace of large shows and to provide as close to a one on one experience as
possible. We highly respect the privacy of our attendees so no contact
information will be shared with prize sponsors. It’s a wonderful
opportunity to connect with other soon-to-be and existing
parents in the community.

Today is International Women's Day. This is a day to honor and to recognize those women who have made a difference to enrich the lives of other women and pave the way for us throughout history. The theme this year is: Connecting girls, Inspiring futures.

So many great women have achieved this and we can name quite a few - Joan of Arc, Catherine the Great, Mother Theresa, Helen Keller, Anne Frank, Margaret Thatcher, Oprah Winfrey. The list of inspiring women is lengthy as it goes through the ages to the present day.

Every woman has someone who has inspired them, given them strength, helped to shape them into who they are today - someone who has changed their life. For me that person is my mother. She was a loving, caring woman who possessed a great deal of strength. She didn't have a formal education but through her work and life experiences she gathered a wealth of information on how to raise a family and still be a strong woman while doing it.

In our family she was definitely the hands on parent who handled the day to day duties as well as helping my father run our farming operation. She taught us our manners, she taught us to respect others but most important she tried to teach us to always respect and value ourselves, to work hard for what you want in life and to never quit. She sacrificed a great deal for her children and was always there to support us in whatever we did. Whether it was our school and sports, when we started that new job, got married or when we became parents ourselves, she was there as a pillar of strength. Her memory lives on even though she is no longer here to guide me and I still feel her strength; needless to say she is dearly missed.

Now that I am a mother to three children, two of them girls, I hope that I can emulate her in being a strong female role model to my daughters. I strive to be the best I can be in achieving my education, taking on a career, and now, being a parent. I hope if I show my daughters the same love and strength my mother showed me, then I can pass on the legacy she left so that they too can grow to be inspired, confident, strong women.

There are still challenges for women today but there is no doubt those who have come before us have done a remarkable job of breaking down barriers and opening up doors. I'm thankful for the life lessons and inspiration from my mother. I hope I can pass on a love of learning, a love of self and a passion for achieving what you want in life to my daughters while instilling the importance of tolerance and compassion. I see two bright, shining sparks of youth in my girls and I hope to fan the flames so they grow into confident young women in the future.

Thank you Mom - you have done your job of connecting and inspiring me. I will do my best to follow in your footsteps.
If you're an expectant parent and looking at choosing cloth diapers you might be wondering what options there are for you and if you should consider newborn diapers. Babies come in many shapes and sizes and there are definitely some great choices available for newborn diapers. No matter if you're on a budget or are wanting products that will last beyond those early, early days, there's something for everyone and every baby.

We will sometimes hear parents say that they're going to start using cloth diapers but only after the first month or so once baby is bigger. Did you know that the newborn size disposable diapers are the most expensive when you look at the cost per diaper? They will average between $0.32-0.40+/diaper compared to the larger sizes that average $0.18-0.27+ each. That may not seem like much of a difference but when you are changing so often in those early days after baby arrives, the costs will add up and a good portion of your disposable diaper costs will be incurred with the newborn and smaller sizes.

Parents often ask about whether they can use cloth diapers while baby is still passing meconium. The answer is yes, you can. There are both disposable and reusable liners that can be laid in a diaper to help keep the solids off the fabric and help reduce staining. There are tools available to help make the clean up easier. Sunning out stains or proper use of a stain remover product when laundering can certainly keep them stain free.

So what type of newborn diapering options are there? The most economical option, which is also very simple to use, are prefolds and diaper covers. Newborn cotton prefolds coupled with sized diaper covers like the ones made by Bummis, are a great combination. You can get a set of 36 newborn preemie prefolds and 4-6 covers for about $110.00, depending on the style of cover you choose.

AMP Diapers Hemp Fitteds

In keeping with a two piece system and natural fabrics, a hemp fitted with a separate cover is also a great system for those wanting the look of a disposable with the benefits of cloth. AMP Diapers Hemp Fitteds are a two size snap closure diaper made from super soft, super absorbent hemp and their size small will fit babies 7-18 lbs. Combine this with a Bummis Sized cover or Mommy's Touch or Happy Heiny's One Size Cover and you've got a bullet proof diaper option for your little one.

If you want some two piece options that give you a bit more flexibility, then a system like the Mommy's Touch Budget Bottoms is one to consider. They have a double layer shell with a set of snaps at the top of the back end. It is here that you can snap in and snap out microfleece topped microterry soaker pads. As long as the shell is not soiled with solid waste you can reuse it by simply placing a clean soaker into the shell. These could also be used with cotton prefolds, but the microterry inserts will definitely give you a bit more absorbency as compared to the cotton. A set of 4 shells and 36 soakers will cost you approximately $250.00. Keep in mind these shells can also be used as covers over fitteds for a great nighttime solution.
They can be used three ways: as a cover for a prefold, as a pocket diaper or with the Soft Bums pods which can be snapped in and out of the shell allowing it to be reused if not soiled. These diapers will truly fit any size baby right from newborn to toddler without a lot of bulk to their fit like some one size styles can have on newborn or tiny babies. These are great for families with more than one child in diapers as well since they can be

The last type we want to note is the Mums Bums All In One diaper. This is a sized line of all in one product and the size small will fit babies 8-14 lbs. These diapers have 7 layers of hemp built into the body of the diaper and also have three options for the interior fabric: microfleece, suedecloth and bamboo velour with organic French cotton terry for those looking for more natural fabric options. These are the "Cadillac" of cloth diapers and will cost $27.00-28.00 per diaper but they are a very absorbent, trim fitting all in one product. Once the interior hemp is fully primed, there would likely be no need to add any further absorbency to this diaper as the hemp is a heavy gauge.

Mums Bums All In One (Sized)

As you can see there are numerous newborn options for cloth diapers to choose from. No matter if your family is on a budget, has preferences for or sensitivities to certain fabrics, there truly is a diaper for you. There is no need to wait until baby is bigger. With these types of products it is possible to start cloth diapering right from day one.

If you aren't sure where to start, think about what you want out of a diaper. What type of closure system do you prefer? There are snap or Aplix options for a number of products. If you have a budget, you can always find something that fits it. If you want to try a few styles to see what works best, that allows you to get a feel for the various types. Once you've done that, you can choose more of your favorites.
I'm so glad I had the chance to connect with her as it had been some time since we'd seen each other. Over the past year we each went through events in our life that impacted us profoundly and changed us forever. I think what she went through was in many, many ways more difficult than my own experience. I was blessed to share her thoughts and talk to her about it.

On my drive home after our visit I thought about the things that we both went through and how life can take a much different turn than one expects in any given moment; when that happens you are tested. Some of us fail. Some of us find ourselves in a whole new light and create awareness and inspiration for others through our experience. I think my friend is truly an inspiration to others. She's a person with a gift for sharing experiences through her ability to write. It is in this way that she helps to heal the hearts of others while healing her own as well.

How often do we take for granted the dawn of the day and the fact that we rise each morning to greet it like we did the day before? How many times as parents do we wish for a certain phase to pass with our children or wish that parenting just wasn't so hard?

At times it's so easy to forget that each day is a gift and that if you are blessed to be a parent, those children will not be children forever. All of the phases and stages will too soon become memories. At times it's also easy to think that you are suffering in silence alone with your problems when it's true there are many, many others who share in daily struggles that test their strength and faith.

As Moms we often place enormous amounts of pressure upon ourselves and others. We have expectations of ourselves that are so much higher than anyone else would place on us. I also see how we often choose to judge or criticize instead of stepping up to ask if someone needs help and support, even if it's just the offer to listen and understand what someone is going through. We don't know what another person might be dealing with each day.

My friend and I spoke of faith and how the strength of it or lack of it can play a role in how you handle experiences that test you to the core. It helps us to be thankful for the things we have - our relationships, our children, our family, our friends. It inspires us to be a better person and to give to others remembering that everyone has challenges and struggles along the way.

I'm thankful there are people like my good friend who can manage to see the beauty in things that others may not, that they can take a life experience that has tested their own personal limits and still be able to help shine light into souls shattered and surrounded in darkness. It truly is something remarkable and to see someone amidst their own pain be able to pass on peace to others, truly inspires me to be a better person, a better spouse, a better parent, a better friend. It's a lesson to us all that we have much to give from within ourselves even when we think we don't.

Thanksgiving is not just another holiday long weekend. It is a time to sincerely reflect on all of the things we are given in this life and to recognize all of the gifts we receive, like the gift my friend gave me: the gift of inspiration. I'm thankful for her friendship and for the fact I have the ability to learn and grow as a person because of it.

Cloth Diapers - What's a good deal?

We've been a cloth diaper retailer for almost five years and have been a cloth diaper user for almost a decade. There are numerous types and styles and it's often confusing to new parents considering this option when trying to choose which ones to purchase.

There are a number of things to consider, of course one of them being cost - but is that really the only thing? It's true that we're in times of some economic uncertainty and families are looking to make the most out of every dollar they spend. When it comes to cloth diapers there are some things to keep in mind when making your selection. We want to give you some thoughts to ponder when you are considering your cloth diaper budget and how much to spend on them.

It's true that there is a cloth diaper for ANY budget. In our workshops we definitely touch on the economic advantages of using cloth diapers versus disposables and the budget associated with each type and style. A complete set of cloth diapers and accessories to get you started diapering an infant will cost you about $210.00 including taxes (not including shipping, if applicable). These diapers will fit a baby from approximately 8-15 lbs. Once baby outgrows that size of system, you would need to purchase a similar set for a toddler that will cost about $200.00 including taxes (not including shipping). That means for less than $500.00 you can purchase enough cloth diapering products to last from newborn to toddler sizes in a two piece system, made right here in Canada with high quality materials and superior workmanship.

There are other styles of cloth diapers whose total cost could be around a maximum of $1,000.00. This type of budget represents the most convenient one piece type of cloth diaper systems - the top of the line models with all the bells and whistles.

There are of course products that will fall in between the spectrum of both so families can choose which ones suit their overall budget and completely tailor their choices to their exact needs.

What happens when you find what appears to be a Cadillac model of cloth diaper at a bargain basement price? Is this the Mother-of-all-deals? Or is it just a lemon made to look like a sweet cherry that will leave a sour taste in your mouth about cloth diapering? This is what we really want to address with new and prospective cloth diaper users. What kind of value are you getting for your cloth diaper dollars?

There are cheap, overseas made diapering products readily available in the marketplace today. This is not unlike any other product from shoes to clothes to toys to electronics; the list goes on and on. That being said, the quality of these items can be so poor that the performance is greatly compromised. For a new family just starting on their cloth diapering journey, this can spell disaster. Countless experiences of frustrated purchasers actually end up quitting cloth diapering because of these types of products - that's very sad.

Another thing to consider is the location in which products are manufactured. There are some factories that have fair trade practices. There are also many that do not. We've all seen the news reports regarding the appalling working conditions in these factories. Have the products been tested for lead and other potentially harmful chemicals? Do they adhere to any minimum safety standards for children's products?

As a business we support Canadian, US and European made products as much as possible or at least confirm with manufacturers that the country of origin is NOT located in an area with questionable practices. As a parent, knowing where the products are made that I'm going to be using on my child is very important to me and we know it's equally important to our clients and their families.

The old adage is true - you get what you pay for. If you want high quality products that will last, then spending a few more dollars to get that will provide you with a great deal of peace of mind. If you also value that they are sold to you by a business that fully supports you after the sale with whatever and how ever many questions you may have, then shopping with your local expert is an important factor to consider as well. The math is simple, no matter what type or style of cloth diapers you choose, you WILL save money in the long run.

Whether they are good quality, sustainably made products can also save you money as you won't have to replace them when they don't last even for your first baby. We also believe your time and satisfaction level is worth something too. If you're constantly frustrated with cloth diapers because of these inferior products that's costly as well. Who needs extra stress as a new parent? There are enough things to worry about, we want your cloth diaper experience NOT to be one of them.

A decade of cloth diaper experience and direct product experience is very important when helping families choose a cloth diaper system. If you want to learn more, attend a workshop. If you've ever got questions or wish to decrease your frustration with inferior diaper products, contact us - we love to help!

We sincerely hope this helps to shed some light on the benefits of choosing sustainable cloth diapering products and what factors determine the type of deal you get. Here's to nothing but sweet cherries for you!
We're starting to hear rumblings of challenges in the markets across the globe and that people are looking at ways to make their shopping dollars go farther. We wanted to let parents know a tip that can be overlooked sometimes when cloth diapering - the benefits of reusable cloth wipes and making your own wipes solution.

If you've made the choice to use cloth diapers (and we applaud you for doing so), another part of that commitment may be to choose reusable cloth wipes instead of disposable wipes products. Some people opt for disposable wipes products but they can be very costly and in some cases, contain numerous chemicals that can cause skin irritation for some children. We've used both types of products and if you have a child with sensitive skin, choosing the right wipes can make all the difference. There are some disposable wipes products that will contain alcohol and this can be very drying and irritating on baby's delicate skin. If your child has a diaper rash as well, disposable wipes with alcohol or excessive chemicals can cause a burning, painful sensation when being used.

Reusable wipes are soft, durable and well suited for the job they do. They can be used for baby's bottom as well as wiping little hands and faces. You'll want to designate a specific set for each type of job and not necessarily mix the two for obvious reasons.

Wipes can be made with hemp, cotton, bamboo, flannel or synthetic fabrics and the choice is very much a personal one as to what type to choose. You will want to have approximately 24-36 reusable wipes on hand at one time to ensure you have an adequate supply.

As for wipes solutions, we have a few recipes we can share:

Basic and Popular Solution
2 cups boiling water
2 Tbsp Baby Bath (sodium laureth sulfate free)
2 Tbsp Baby Lotion (paraben free)

Mix all together once water is boiling then let cool and pour onto wipes in container.

Essential Oil Based Solution
2 Cups warm water
1 Tbsp Olive Oil
2 Drops Tea Tree Oil
2 Drops Lavender Oil

Mix all ingredients together and pour over your wipes, or store in a separate container.

Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Solution
1-2 cups water
2 Drops of Tea Tree or Lavender Oil

Mix together and it is ready for use.

Essential Oil & Baby Shampoo Solution
3 Cups water
1/8 Cup Olive Oil
4 Drops Tea Tree Oil
8 Drops Lavender Oil
1 Tbsp Baby Shampoo (sodium laureth sulfate free)

Stir well, ready to use.

The solutions with the essential oils in them will be mildew resistant and have some antibacterial and healing properties. We have even more solution recipes so if there is something else you'd like to see aside from those listed, please contact us - we love to help!

We know that sometimes parents choose to opt for a little bit of convenience by choosing disposable wipes. As with anything, once you get started it's often a very easy change to implement. Going with reusable cloth wipes is a great way to save money and introduce a more natural product into baby's routine all while reducing your carbon footprint. It eliminates one more disposable product from your household.

How many times have you said to yourself "I've really got to exercise more." Like me you've got good intentions but there always seems to be something that easily gets in the way. Whether it's when your baby is nursing non-stop or is up frequently throughout the night and you'd trade anything for sleep, including exercise. Or maybe your house has a baby and a toddler and life is flying past you at warp speed. Suddenly you look at yourself in the mirror and wonder what happened to me and how'd I get so out of shape?

I've always respected those Moms who have managed to fit in some time each day for themselves to work out, go for a walk, do some strength training, or head to an exercise class of their choice. I've always tried to walk throughout my pregnancies, with my children in strollers and especially now that they are all old enough to walk along or ride their bikes. They laugh as they go past me on the way home already as I'm still walking to the midway point of our journey.

This summer I've made a conscious effort to get back into shape. Over the past three weeks I've tried to walk or do weights every day, sometimes both if you can believe it! I have to say it feels really good to get back into an exercise routine. The noticeable results of inches coming off those places we'd all like to see shrink and the fact that my husband has a harder time getting me off the tube at the lake means I'm getting stronger.

Now that fall is on the way and our activities begin to shift inside, can one keep motivated and keep going? I'm sure going to try. If you've got a good summer workout routine going, share your tips for staying focused and on track throughout the colder months ahead. Here's some tips on healthy summer habits to carry over into fall.

I love these crisp sunny mornings when it's not scorching hot and all is quiet except for the sound of your feet crunching on the gravel. In a few months it'll be snow crunching under my feet but that just means I'll walk faster to get back inside! Here's to a healthy you and to staying motivated!

Baby Luv Boutique Fabulous Fall Contest

The days are getting shorter (don't like it), the evenings are getting cooler (it IS better for sleeping), so that must mean a change of seasons is on the way.
What can you win? Our Fabulous Fall Contest winner will receive a prize package valued over $100! It will include products that will help you stay organized, warm and cozy from Cloud B and Mommy's Touch, skin care products to keep baby's skin soft and protected by Matter Company and Dimpleskins Naturals, and a product that will help dry clothes and cloth diapers in a chemical free and static free manner!

Our tip for fall is to make sure to keep baby's and your skin moisturized. As the weather cools off and the wind picks up, the air begins to get dry. This can lead to dry, flaky skin so regularly applying a great moisturizer or body balm will help relieve that dryness and prevent chapping and the itchiness that can come with it.

We hope you have fun with this one. Be creative and share your best tips and tricks for handling the start of fall and the cooler weather. Summer's been fun but fall's going to be fabulous!

Back to School Soon - Small Pangs of Mommy Guilt...

Well it's the end of August and sadly the end of summer is in sight which, at our house, means back to school. In fact it's only a mere 3 1/2 days until all of my children are back in school again. Does it sound like I'm a little excited about that?

It's this feeling of excitement that we parents joke about this time of year as being "the most wonderful time of the year" (thanks to Staples ads of summer's past). But even when I say it, it still gives me that pang of guilt I know I shouldn't have but still do anyway. How is it that we can never truly allow ourselves to be guilt free as Moms? Even when we know we deserve some "me" time, why do we always let that voice in the back of our head interrupt those glorious thoughts of some much needed time to ourselves? If you've mastered a way to banish those guilty thoughts, please share; I know I'm not the only one who'd like to know the secret to guilt-free parenting.

If you're like me, having three children means you have a busy life whether they are in the baby/toddler stage or in my case, now when they're in the elementary school/tween stage. Fleeting moments of time to yourself are rare in a multi-child household and trips to get groceries can seem like you've spent a day at the spa sometimes. Even then I've found myself sometimes rushing to finish up shopping so I can be home in time to tuck my kids into bed while they're still awake. If I arrive home late and all are asleep, there it is again - guilt...I shouldn't have stopped to browse the magazine section at the drugstore, then I would have been home earlier to say goodnight.

I know for myself that when I've had a bit of a break from my children, whether it's a few hours or even a day (or two if I'm really lucky), I find I am a better parent. My patience and tolerance for noise and sibling squabbles goes up and I genuinely think it's good for my children as well. My husband is great with the kids if I have to be away, in fact he enjoys spending time with them on his own, and it seems as if the kids appreciate you a little more when you return. Those big hugs at the door that come with shouts of "Mom's home, I missed you!" make you feel like a superstar, even if it's only for a moment.

There are those who are part of a single parent family. It can be doubly hard and you may not have the luxury of a partner who can stay with your children while you try to take some time away. If you're in this situation, perhaps getting some help from relatives or close friends is something you could try to arrange. Even if it's only for a few hours to get away and run some errands, get a haircut, or grab a coffee, minus the Mom guilt. It's certainly worth the effort and will help you recharge those parenting batteries. Joining a local parenting group or getting in touch with your community group organization may be a good start to finding some connections to help you establish a plan to work in some Mom "me" time.

So, for all of you parents out there who are happily humming the Staples tune right now, I can relate. Here's an article that will give us all a bit of a chuckle on why you shouldn't feel Mom guilt. Despite the obvious humor, it still makes the point that we all need to take time for ourselves. Do take time to enjoy the read and enjoy those last few days of summer holidays - guilt free!
Click here to read an article on how inflation is affecting the cost of disposable diapers.

I know I've seen the cost of fuel and groceries rise sharply the past year and it has particularly impacted the amount of money we spend on groceries each week. My family goes through a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, which are very costly, and we've definitely noticed a difference at the checkout counter. I can't imagine adding the cost of disposable diapers to that total.

With consumer confidence low and personal debt levels high, perhaps one way to increase the cash in parents' wallet is to consider reusable diaper products. The overall investment is significantly less than the cost of disposables and practices such as line drying clothing and cloth diapers will allow you to save even further on your energy bills.

Inflationary pressures are something we're going to be keeping a close eye on in the coming months. As the start of our workshop season begins once again, we will continue to educate parents on the benefits of using cloth diapers. One of the topics we include is a detailed financial analysis of the cost of cloth versus disposable products. Most parents are shocked at the total cost of disposable products and now that they are increasing in price the gap is widening even further between them and cloth diaper products.

Cloth diaper systems will cost anywhere from $250-$1,000 depending on the type and number of diapers purchased. If properly cared for they can last beyond one child and often multiple children. Disposables will cost anywhere from $1,800-3,500+ per child. As you can see, the potential cost savings are huge.

Some raw material costs will be impacting the cloth diaper manufacturers as well however despite an increase in production costs, cloth diapers are still a very affordable and cost effective choice for families.
When I was growing up I remember my Mom planting a huge garden. We had everything from potatoes, tomatoes, peas, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, pumpkins, beets, radish, beans, corn, onions and garlic to strawberries, rhubarb and raspberries.

I used to think it was a ton of work to plant, water and weed it. Not to mention I hated shelling bags and bags of peas or cleaning bags and bags of beans to blanch and put in the freezer when I'd rather be doing something else fun outside. But everything sure tasted good when she cooked those vegetables or made jam and desserts with those fruits.

Well now that I'm an adult and have my own family guess what? I've got my own garden and we enjoy potatoes, tomatoes, peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, pumpkins, beets, radish, beans, peppers, corn, onions, garlic, herbs, zucchini, squash, strawberries and rhubarb. My husband wants us to plant raspberry canes and my kids want an apple tree as well. Those are next on the list to add to our yard.

Another treat we will enjoy this year is fresh Saskatoon berries. For those of you not from the Prairies who have never tasted a Saskatoon berry, you are sadly missing out. They are a little smaller than a Blueberry, but a little sweeter and they make wonderful pies, jam and jelly. We are lucky enough to have a stash of Saskatoon berry trees in our yard scattered among the native trees surrounding the property. We went out a few nights ago and picked enough to make a pie and have a few for fresh eating - yum!

I don't do as much canning and storing for winter as my Mom did but that's something I need to be more diligent about. I do make my own tomato sauce and sometimes Salsa as well if the tomato bounty is big enough. I don't think I've eaten a commercial jar of tomato sauce for quite a few years now and if I have to, the taste just doesn't compare to homemade.

Things not only taste out of this world good but I feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment when I can walk outside my house to the garden and pick enough vegetables to make my family a meal. I don't have to worry about how much or how long I'm washing things since they are chemical and pesticide free. I know I'm saving a ton of money this time of year as well since a trip to the store for groceries has tripled over the past couple of years with fruit and produce being most expensive. Don't you hate it how all the things that are good for you cost the most?

If you have the ability to plant a garden, big or small, I encourage you to do it. If you're like me when I was growing up I swore I'd never do all that work but here I am, carrying on the tradition I saw my family take part in. So far my kids like to help plant the garden and they sure like picking (and mostly eating) fresh strawberries, peas and carrots. I can only hope I'm instilling in them the importance of knowing where your food comes from and to take pride in the fact that you can grow it yourself. With numerous communities taking initiatives to begin community gardens, you may just be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour as well!

When the weather turns cold and snowy here as it always does later in the year, I'm going to try some indoor container gardening with fresh herbs and lettuce. Maybe that will keep me inspired as I wait for spring next year!

Off to make some new potatoes with dill, butter and onions for supper - yum again! We hope you are enjoying the fruits of summer too - whether in your own garden or someone else'. Another great way to reduce your carbon footprint by growing food close to home. Gotta love summer!
Now what? What do you have to do to get them ready for baby to wear?

Whenever you purchase cloth diapers you will want to wash them before baby wears them just to ensure they are clean for the first use. Some types of cloth diapers and the corresponding fabric used in them will require different levels of preparation. We'll cover them all so you know where to start no matter what type and style you have.

Synthetic fabrics like polyester, microterry and microfleece often comprise the components of pocket diapers and/or All In One diapers. These materials should be washed and dried once prior to first use to clean the diapers. A wash cycle on hot with the recommended amount of cloth diaper friendly detergent with a cold rinse cycle and an extra rinse will be sufficient preparation. Dry them in the dryer or on the line, especially in the summer, and they are ready to go. Even in the colder months you can line dry diapers (and other laundry) inside on a drying rack. Line drying is a great way to save energy and reduce your costs all while helping to lessen your carbon footprint.

Natural fabrics like cotton and hemp will require some additional steps in the preparation process. Natural fabrics contain oils and wax in the case of unbleached cotton. These oils and wax are released from the fabric during the initial wash and dry cycles. These fabrics will also shrink and fluff up so washing cotton and hemp products in hot water, rinsing and drying in the dryer multiple times will remove the natural oils and prep the fabric. Each time these fabrics are washed and dried it helps to prime the fabric or make it more absorbent. Hemp will require 8-12 wash and dry cycles to allow it to reach it's maximum absorbency. It can be used after the first wash and dry cycle however after each washing it will gain more absorbency each time.

If you are using hemp or cotton inserts/prefolds inside of pocket diapers you will want to wash these fabrics separately from your pocket diapers and microfleece products for the first 4-6 wash and dry cycles in order to prevent the natural oils and wax from coating the interior fabric of your pocket diapers potentially causing them to repel liquid and leak. Once these initial wash and dry cycles are complete, then all your diaper products can be washed together without concern of the natural oils/wax coating your diapers.

When line drying hemp it can get a bit hard and stiff but you can always put the hemp in the dryer on the fluff or wrinkle release setting to soften them up. You can also take them off the line while just slightly damp and place them in the dryer for a few minutes to soften them as well. The addition of PVC free or wool dryer balls in your dryer will help to soften clothes and reduce drying time as well.

Once you've got those diapers washed and dried you are ready to begin using them. I can see baby's smiling face already - so comfortable in their new cloth diapers!

Be sure to contact us if you ever have questions regarding preparation and care - we luv to help!

Here is a recent article on the outcome of this and the lawsuits pursued by parents whose children experienced those reactions while using the Pampers product.
This series of articles certainly gives parents more food for thought on the choice to use cloth versus disposables and potential health issues that can arise as a result.

We feel that cloth diapers are the best option for families for many, many reasons. The lack of education and true understanding about the latest innovations in cloth diaper products is why we host our regular Cloth Diaper Workshops.

If you want the real story about cloth diapers and their benefits, attend a workshop and get the facts. Articles like the one listed here motivate us to continue educating families which we feel is a very valuable service to provide.

Summer's Hot - Your Diaper Pail is Not?

Summer's in full swing and it's been sweltering hot the past few days. How's your diaper pail doing in this weather? If you don't enjoy the luxury of air conditioning in your home it can make diaper pail management a bit of a challenge. We'd love to give you some tips and some relief if you have been struggling with keeping things smelling fresh and odor free.

We've always recommended our clients use baking soda in the bottom of their diaper pail. A generously sprinkled layer in the bottom will do a great job of eliminating odor. Washing your diapers no more than once every 2 days maximum will also help reduce odors in your nursery.

Recently we've come across a new product that can make this task even easier to do and we loved the idea so much, we brought it into our store. Ever Bamboo, located in Canada, offers a Diaper Pail Deodorizer product made from bamboo charcoal. We've had some of our clients test this product and it has performed very well.

The bamboo charcoal is made from moso bamboo which can grow two feet or more in a single day, reaching up to 60 feet tall in two to three months.

Due to the growth characteristics of moso bamboo, millions of tiny holes are created as the plant densifies as it matures, a process taking approximately five years. It is these tiny holes that ultimately give the resulting bamboo charcoal its revolutionary abilities as both a deodorizer and dehumidifier. These benefits have been enjoyed for more than five centuries in Asia. Compared to regular charcoal, bamboo charcoal has 10 times more surface area and is 4 times stronger in its absorption rate.

Bamboo forests are widely planted throughout Asia, and due to the resurgence in the recognition of its benefits, many more acres are planted every day. And as bamboo takes only five years from seedling to mature plant, it will be readily available for all future generations.

With proper care, your bamboo charcoal product can last an entire year or more. To recharge your diaper pail deodorizers, place your bamboo charcoal product outside under direct sunlight (2-3 hours per side) monthly or weekly for optimal performance. After it's useful life, and because it is a 100% natural product, it can be recycled into the ecosystem.

Using the Ever Bamboo Diaper Pail Deodorizer couldn't be easier. You can simply place it in the bottom of your diaper pail/pail liner or tape it to the lid of your pail and it will do an awesome job of keeping your pail smelling like, well nothing really. No knock-you-over ammonia smell when you walk into your laundry room or nursery.

A very eco-chic and inexpensive product, the Ever Bamboo Diaper Pail Deodorizer will make diaper pail management a breeze and your summer sensational! You can find them right here at Baby Luv Boutique.
One of the hottest topics regarding cloth diapers is what detergent to use when washing them. There are a number of options available from mainstream detergents to ones specifically geared to use on cloth diapers. Our clients always want to know "What detergent should I use on my diapers?" Read on to find out the answers!

We did a great deal of research on this topic and want to acknowledge a wonderful resource in Shirley Murdock at Bummis. She has a background in chemistry so any questions we have on detergents, their ingredients and suitability for use on cloth diapers can be successfully answered.

Some of the science behind detergent, key ingredients to look for, recommended varieties for use on cloth diapers and local sources of recommended brands will be shared.

As we noted in our first instalment on cloth diaper care, location and water hardness will be a factor in how well detergents will work. What works for some may not work for others but this is intended to be a guide that will give you a great place to start on developing a successful care routine.

Water hardness will be a very large factor in doing any type of laundry including diaper laundry. Variations in pH will be evident from province to province, city to city and even from household to household. There may be a detergent that works well for your neighbour but not at all for you simply because they may have a slightly different routine or some other factors that contribute to laundry success. If they have a water softener and your house does not, that will impact on how detergent performs.

The Science Behind Detergent

Let's start with some of the science behind detergent and highlight some key ingredients that can be very good and in turn, very bad.

Ingredients in detergents may include the following:

Sodium Carbonate– is known as a builder and is an ingredient that you will want to have in your detergent. Sodium Carbonate is a surfactant as these help to dislodge dirt from fabric and hold it in suspension so that it is not redeposited on the fabric during washing. Builders are water softeners. These chemical compounds are agents that remove calcium ions by complexation or precipitation. Typical builders are sodium carbonate, complexation agents, soap, and zeolites. They function by sequestering or precipitating the problematic ions.

Sodium Bicarbonate – is problematic if detergents use too much and it can be harsh on finer fabrics like bamboo. Tots Bots does not recommend detergents that contain Sodium Bicarbonate for use on their products. If it is not completely washed and rinsed from the fabric, residual sodium bicarbonate will attack fabric in the dryer.

Sodium Percarbonate – is an acceptable oxygenated bleach component as long as it does not have any other components combined with it for that purpose. If used sparingly or in moderation it will work well for most fabrics. You will want to ensure it is completely rinsed from fabrics. It may be safe to use but if not completely washed out of fabric before drying, it will break down all fabrics, not just those that are sensitive or delicate.

Enzymes - The enzymes used in laundry detergents act on materials that make up a variety of stains and soils so that these materials can be washed away more easily. These enzymes are named after the materials they can act upon, for example, proteases break down protein based stains, lipolases break down lipid (fat) based stains and amylases break down starches and other carbohydrate based stains (amyl is Greek for starch). Since one enzyme molecule can act on many substrate (i.e., soil) molecules, a small amount of enzyme added to a laundry detergent can provide a big cleaning impact according to manufacturers. However, enzymes can cause rashes, blisters and sores for some babies if they have sensitive skin or if it is not completely washed out of the fabric and becomes reactivated by urine or bowel movements causing a skin reaction.

Fragrance – either natural or synthetic, these additions to detergent are not essential cleaning ingredients and for those with allergies or sensitive skin, they can cause reactions in some.

Optical Brighteners – these chemicals are added to some detergents to help bend or refract the light to make clothing appear cleaner or whiter. They can be problematic in that they will cause build up over time in the fabric and lead to leaking or wicking problems with diapers and insert material.

Fabric Softeners– either built into detergent, added as a liquid or used in the dryer in the form of dryer sheets are not recommended as they will cause build up and leave a residue which will cause leaking. Items like dryer balls will help reduce static in the dryer if you wish to dry your diapers in that way. Even if you use fabric softener on other laundry and not in the loads of cloth diaper laundry, it can still leave a residue in your machine and dryer which can be transferred onto your cloth diaper laundry when it is being washed and/or dried.

Pure Soap– despite being a more natural cleaning component, pure soaps will leave a scum or residue on fabric and it will build up over time leading to leaking and repelling issues. Detergent which states it contains soap will not be the best choice for cloth diapers.

If you have a solid wash routine and a good detergent choice, then laundering cloth diapers can be successful for everyone.

Detergent Information Listing
For a detailed listing of recommended cloth diaper detergents please check out Bummis detergent information here.

This year Father's Day is a bittersweet one for me. I and my children can celebrate the day with my husband, their Dad, but it will be the first Father's Day where I won't be able to see or talk to my own Dad or have my children pass on good wishes to their Grandfather since he passed away earlier this year. I can fondly look back with a smile at the times spent with my Father and remember the man he was and all that he did for us growing up. Those are the things that will keep him alive in our hearts every day.

I can also marvel at the man who is the father of my children and celebrate all of the great things he does in our family every day. I admire him for the many wonderful qualities he possesses and I feel blessed to have him as my husband and partner in raising our children.

Strength and patience are qualities that leap out at me when I think about what kind of a Father my husband is. He's a teacher and a leader and has this amazing quality that just draws children to him - I think that's why he's such an awesome hockey coach as well. He's fun to be around but strong when he needs to be and those are just some of the things I love about him.

So how will you be spending your day with Dad? Breakfast in bed? Homemade gifts? A fishing trip for the day? Whatever it is you know Dad will love it, that's just the way Dads are.

Happy Father's Day!

Baby Luv Boutique's Swing Into Summer Contest

Summer is on the way (we hope) and we thought it would be great to have a contest with some awesome prizes that will get you and your little one all decked out for the season!
It's the day when I get extra hugs and kisses from my three children and receive a host of handmade gifts crafted with love. My own Mother passed away a few years ago and although she will always hold a special place in my heart, my Mother's Day now focuses on my own children and the time we spend together.

I can't wait until tomorrow morning to see what those young minds and hands have created. It seems like only yesterday when each one was born and spent most of the day sleeping, nursing and needing diapers changed. Now they are all in school, playing sports and growing up way too fast it seems.

For all the advice and anecdotes we hear when we prepare and become parents, none have rang more true than the following phrases: "Time goes by a lot faster once you have kids." Then it's: "Wait until baby number two arrives - it's goes even faster," and my current mantra: "If you thought time flew by before, just wait til they're in school."

Life is always busy it seems and no one is busier than you are as a Mom. We have numerous roles to fill each and every day from spouse to career woman to sister, daughter and Mom, but on this day take the time to cherish those fleeting moments, enjoy those handmade presents and celebrate all that you do.

No matter if you have yet to begin your journey into Motherhood or if you are well on your way, our experiences bond us on this day. Only a Mother and parent can know unconditional love and each of us will have the footprints of our children forever in our hearts and minds.

To all the wonderful Moms out there - Happy Mother's Day!

When Life Happens...

For some time now I have felt the need to post an entry on our blog explaining the absence of consistent communication, for lack of a better phrase. In early March my father passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. I wanted to take an opportunity to write a blog post that wasn't about a company event or new product or even cloth diaper care instructions.

Life happened over the past few months and I wanted to share a bit of the personal experience I and Baby Luv Boutique have been through recently.

As a business owner your time is divided between family, business, and self with all three vying for top spot at times. Dealing with the terminal illness of a parent is a consuming, overwhelming time and even though my family has been through this before, it certainly does not get any easier. One distinct difference this time is that my children were all a bit older and definitely experienced the illness and passing of their grandfather with varying levels of understanding and acceptance.

When you are trying to deal with your own grief and all that goes with the impending loss of a parent, so too are the little people in your life. When the hour is the darkest the wonderful innocence of a child can shed some much needed light on your own perspective.

We tried to prepare our children as their grandfather's health deteriorated as much as we could but when he passed away, the reactions were as unique as each child. My youngest was the closest to my father and I expected a huge display of sadness from her. Despite her grief, she was able to confidently say that we didn't have to worry about Grandpa anymore since he was in heaven with Grandma now and his cancer was gone. Our own words echoed back to us with a calmness and confidence that can only make you wonder in awe at how mature a young child under the age of 6 could be. Whenever I was emotional throughout his illness and had had a tough day, my youngest would bring me a tissue and say "It's OK Mom." Wait a minute, isn't that supposed to be me doing that?

Our children deserve much more credit than we give them at times; their understanding can be much deeper than we know. I feel blessed that all of my children got to meet and spend some time with their grandparents, albeit some amounts far too short for some, but still opportunities to create memories.

I just wanted to shed some light on the quiet times with our business the past few months. Life happened to us and we needed to spend some time with family that would not be possible going forward. We are fortunate to have wonderful clients and we are looking forward to the change in season and all the hope and promise spring can bring.

We just wanted to share a bit of the good and bad we've been through these past few months. The overall result is good as I'm reflective and awestruck as always by the love in a child's heart. Even when their own heart may be heavy, they can always see the true good in everything. I'm grateful for the time with my father and I'm even more grateful for the time I spend each day with my children. As parents we often see ourselves as the teacher, but every now and then we can learn from our children as well.

The Great Cloth Diaper Change Around the World

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4MnewOrUveQn1e0rWoMhHpWh9WCnmwmmYDL6Hal5csIDEYrcTo8m8mpXNOtH2hYE9qBYLXZ0hakpf6s4rJmteuvbdeLfzUl7uJKHSLokd7OKgeODbjlh61mOdPN1y8ER08EHtOjNQ9g/s320/GCDCLOGO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591943406227500514" />
Baby Luv Boutique is the official Saskatoon host for The Great Cloth Diaper Change taking place on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 at 10am CST. We are one of over 400 locations around the world taking part in this event.

What's all the fuss about? In celebration of Earth Day, cloth diaper retailers and cloth diaper advocates alike are hosting locations around the globe where families will simultaneously change their baby into a reusable cloth diaper. All those taking part hope to set a Guiness World Record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously around the world. If all locations have the minimum number of baby/parent pairs taking part, that could be over 10,000 babies being changed into a cloth diaper at the same time.

Not only does it represent setting a World Record, but it represents a much larger goal. For that moment around the world, all those families will make a statement and place their child in a reusable cloth diaper product eliminating a disposable diaper from entering the landfill. It's a very fitting event to help celebrate Earth Day.

This event is not just for cloth diapering families. For those families who currently do not use cloth diapers but are interested in taking part, you can! Happy Nappy Cloth Diaper Service has graciously offered to provide cloth diapers for families to use for the change event. If you are a cloth diapering family, you must use a commercially manufactured cloth diaper sold in an online boutique like Baby Luv Boutique or some other retail outlet. Homemade cloth diaper products cannot be used during this event based on the Guiness guidelines.

There are a number of rules and requirements surrounding the event that Guiness has provided so Baby Luv Boutique is taking a smaller scale approach to the event. We have space for 35 registered babies/toddlers to attend with a parent. Children must measure 39" or less in order to qualify to take part.

To take part you must pre-register and we ask that attendees arrive on time if not a bit early in order for your registration to be processed. Baby Luv Boutique wants this to be a fun filled event so we are working with a number of suppliers and local businesses who are providing door prize items. Registered participants will be eligible for the door prize draws so to take part, be sure to register early. There will also be a FREE Cloth Diaper Workshop taking place that afternoon as well. We know it's Easter weekend but what a great way to start the holiday celebrations - set a World Record and celebrate the renewed hope that spring brings to us all!

Witness volunteers are needed to help with this event. You’ve been hearing a lot about it and I wanted to give you a bit more background on it. As a parent and a business owner, I felt there was a need to provide parents with information on a variety of relevant topics of interest in a setting that makes it enjoyable for them to receive that information. Other businesses I work with felt there was a need to do the same and thus The Savvy Parent Seminar was born!

Parents crave knowledge – I know I do. At times it can be difficult to find information and depending on the source, credibility can be an issue. By having a variety of experts available and having us come together in a comfortable setting to present that information offers parents enhanced learning opportunities. This will be a relaxing and entertaining experience that will leave you feeling more confident and informed about making healthy, sustainable choices for yourself and your family.

The Savvy Parent Seminar is an opportunity for existing and expectant parents to gather to hear information from experts on relevant topics, and to enjoy the company of fellow parents while sampling some wonderful food and beverages.

Tickets to attend are $30 each. What do you get for the cost of that ticket? Attendees are going to receive a swag bag full of product samples and information that is worth over $50+ in value, an event booklet with coupons totalling $30+ in value, and a chance to win door prizes that start at $25+ in value. They will get to sample some exquisitely prepared appetizers and dessert while listening to a knowledgeable group of speakers. The collective value of the speakers’ time alone definitely exceeds the cost of a ticket. As a parent or parent to be, how can you go wrong?

To make things even better, a charitable donation from a portion of the proceeds of the event will be made to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. We want you to know the event is about more than just a chance to shop for goods and services, snack and win a prize.

This event is about giving parents an opportunity to be pampered and to take some time for themselves to enjoy an afternoon while being able to come away feeling empowered and enriched by the experience. We know how hard it can be to do that sometimes. You can also feel good that you are helping contribute to a very worthwhile local charity.

Nursing babies are more than welcome and we will have some designated seating within the room for that. Many have asked if they need to leave their small children at home. We leave that choice up to each family as to what works best for them. If you are a young family and a toddler needs to join you at the event, there will be a small unsupervised child’s play area set up to help keep little ones busy with some toys and coloring supplies. Scheduled breaks between groups of speakers will allow people time to mingle, get up and stretch their legs, change baby, give their toddler some free time, and speak with presenters in greater detail on topics of choice.

The goal is to offer a unique, worthwhile experience in an intimate setting while having some fun along the way. We've kept the event size small to avoid a lot of hustle and bustle and to provide as close to a one on one experience as possible. We also respect the privacy of our attendees so no contact information will be shared with prize sponsors. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with other soon-to-be parents and existing parents.

Tickets are on sale until September 22 and you can purchase yours here: www.savvyparentseminar.ca

Here is the agenda for the day:

12:00: Welcome ~ Laura Monchuk, Saskmom.com

12:10: Cloth Diapers: Dispelling the Myths
Shari Hinz, Baby Luv Boutique

12:30: Starting from Scratch: Healthy Foods for Baby & Beyond
Tiffany Banow, Happy Pantry

12:50: Break & Door Prizes

1:30: Creating an Eco-Happy Home
Marlese Assman, Demetria Organics

1:50: Yoga & Relaxation Techniques
Chantal Banda, Harmony Souls

2:10: Break & Door Prizes

2:50: Postpartum Health for Moms
Paula Anderson & Sharlene Reynolds
LifeMark Health Daniels Kimber Physiotherapy
3:10: Wrap Up ~ Laura Monchuk, Saskmom.com

3:30: Final Door Prizes & On-Site Shopping

As you can see it's going to be an awesome afternoon.
