‘Twisters’ Movie Review

I know what you’re thinking, cause I’m thinking it too. ‘Really? ANOTHER millennial movie makeover? Haven’t we taken enough?’ Blockbuster hits we consumed as a generational community just don’t happen like they used to. We have streaming now. And Hollywood has to capitalize on our 90s nostalgia while they can. I think we’re perhaps the last generation they can do this type of thing with. Anyway, more often than not, when I go and see a sequel/remake from the 90s I go in with high hopes and leave feeling disappointed. I try to leave my optimism at home, yet I still manage to get excited. But friends, perhaps the first time ever, I left feeling completely THRILLED with the movie. It didn’t crap on the OG, or ruin my childhood. It brought the thrills I loved in an entirely new story.

I hate when a sequel tries too hard to tie to an original, or when they blatantly steal and rework the same plot. There was none of that with Twisters. A couple of nods, sure, but this is a movie viewers can enjoy even if they haven’t seen the original.

What I Liked About ‘Twisters’

I loved the plot of Twisters. It felt fresh and new while still giving a few nods to the original movie. The story kept me guessing and was visually thrilling, capturing the same excitement and nervous energy I felt with the first Twister film. The cast was excellent, and their performances added depth to the thrilling storyline.

What I Didn’t Like About ‘Twisters’

There wasn’t much I didn’t like about Twisters. Even down to the music, I was into it. There was one part of the movie where I wanted to pause it and see how much time was left. I didn’t want it to end. Strangely enough the only thing I think that woulda made me like it even more is if there had been MORE tornadoes. I’m sure someone will do this, but it would be interesting to see a tornado count comparing this movie to the ’96 one. 

I’m not gonna go into that because you’ve gotta go see it yourself. But I just wanna say that it gave me a weird sense of Oklahoma pride though I’ve never been to OK. And I totally need to get Brian a cowboy hat. Ok, that’s it. I said it. Now on to what parents need to know about Twisters! 

What parents need to know about ‘Twisters’ 

Parents wondering if Twisters is okay for kids should know that this movie is a thriller, much like the original. It has intense scenes that might be frightening for younger children, especially those who are sensitive to storms or natural disasters. Personally I didn’t bring my kids to the screening because 1. They haven’t seen the OG, and until I know how they can handle that at home, I didn’t want their first natural disaster thriller to be in a large, dark, loud theater where everything is more intense. 2. As a kid I saw Twister when I was 10 and definitely had tornado nightmares for a while. Granted, tornadoes were more of a thing in GA than here in TX. 3. Some of my kids deal with anxiety about weather/dark and I think it could open a can of worms we don’t really need. I think if your kids have seen Twister from 1996 and enjoyed it, this one is very much on par with that movie when it comes to intensity and content. 

Once I test out a little thriller at home if my (big) kids do ok, it’s gonna be on like Donkey Kong and I’ll be ready to show them all sorts of new fun movies. 

Is ‘Twisters’ Scary for kids?

Twisters is rated PG-13 for intense action, peril, and images of injuries. It’s a thrilling movie that could be too intense for younger viewers or those sensitive to storms. If your kids have seen the original Twister and enjoyed it, they’ll likely handle this one well. However, for first-time thriller viewers, it might be best to start with the original at home.

Here’s a breakdown of the content to help you decide if it’s suitable for your family:

• Language: There’s some swearing, occasional use of  “sh*t,” “damn,” and “a–hole.”
• Violence and Scary Scenes: The movie is intense with scenes of destruction caused by tornadoes. There’s one jump scare early on.I didn’t scream, but jumped in my seat. I was good the rest of the movie.  If your kids are scared of storms or natural disasters, this movie might be too intense for them.
• Sexual Content: Brief kissing early on, some flirting between adults, but no explicit sexual content.
• Twisters MPAA: Rated PG-13 for intense action and peril, some language and injury images.  

Overall, the movie has its funny moments, balancing the intense scenes with lighter ones.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Twisters is a fantastic sequel that stands on its own while honoring the original. It’s a thrilling, engaging film that’s perfect for a date night or for kids who can handle the intensity. Whether you’re a fan of the original or new to the story, Twisters delivers a memorable movie experience. I honestly cannot wait to see it again.

‘Inside Out 2′ Parent Review

Inside Out 2 had some big shoes to fill, given how much we all loved the first movie. Honestly, I didn’t like the first movie a lot when I first saw it. It took years to grow on me and Inside Out is the reason I try not to watch movie trailers. Yes, thanks to the trailer that gave away so many of the funny one-liners and misled me to believe the whole movie would be a back and forth between the minds of Riley and her parents, I no longer watch most Disney movie trailers. That said, some did manage to slip by me and a couple of one liners in this sequel didn’t surprise me, but there were other funny moments. 

Going in, I knew it would be tough to match the original’s humor and heart. While it wasn’t as laugh-out-loud funny to me, there were still plenty of funny moments, new characters, and the movie tackled some deep themes that will resonate with viewers of all ages.

What I loved about ‘Inside Out 2’

Like the first movie, it gets you thinking. So much so that I really want to go see it again to take in some more. The emotional analogies are packed into the movie and I think present in a way that’s tangible enough to use when discussing with your emotions later.

What I didn’t love

Jayda and I were a little confused by some of the emotions. At one point Jayda leaned over to me and said “did she never feel embarrassed before she was a teenager?” Jayda also wasn’t a big fan of some of the teenage stereotypes of how they act/react. However, as a parent of a teen myself I felt like they were spot on, but I can respect that she didn’t want to feel like it was poking fun at her entire age group. Maybe something to think about if you’re watching with your own teen.

Inside Out 2 Age Rating

Parents wondering if Inside Out 2 is okay for kids should know that the movie delves into complex emotions and themes like puberty (though it doesn’t dive in extensively), learning from mistakes, and the importance of emotions working together. It’s a bit more intricate than the first film, which might go over the heads of younger kids but still offers plenty of entertainment value. There’s a good mix of humor for kids and adults. A standout scene involves the girls trying to read each other’s emotions, which was both funny and relatable. The runtime is 1 hour and 36 minutes, but Ty thought it felt longer. I thought it seemed to be a great length to tell the full story. 

Language in Inside Out 2

The language is mild. Words like “jerk,” “moron,” “gosh,” “freak out,” and “oh my goodness” are used. There’s a moment where Joy exlaimed “Jiminy mother-loving toaster strudel” at one point, which is about as strong as it gets.

Is Inside Out 2 Scary for young kids?

There are a few intense moments, such as idea storms that look like tornadoes, characters in peril, and some emotional stress, but nothing overly frightening. Inside Out 2 is  rated PG for some thematic elements.

But enough of what I thought, here’s what my kids have to say about Inside Out 2. 

What my kids thought of Inside Out 2

What did you think of the movie?

Jayda: It was good. 

Ty: Pretty good.

Lee Lee: It’s AWESOME! 

So why did you like it?

Jayda: Because I think it was funny like the first one. But also different and had new type stuff. 

Ty: It was interesting.

Lee Lee: Because everyone wanted to take over it, and Sadness and Embarrassment became friends and I liked that part. 

What life lesson did you learn? Or what message Do you think was the movie trying to get across?

Jayda: That no matter what happens, you’re yourself and that’s good. 

Ty: Every emotion has something good. 

Lee Lee: That you don’t take stuff if they say stop. Always be happy. But sometimes you can be sad. 

Who was your favorite ‘Inside Out 2’ character?

Jayda: I liked Sadness, but I liked Joy too. 

Ty: Anger, because he shoulda smashed that guy into pieces. 

Lee Lee: Joy. I mean the cutie girl [Envy].

What was the funniest part to you? 

Jayda: When they were doing the eye-reading thing, or the fanny pack guy, or the Deepest Darkest Secret. 

Ty: Oh, there was a lot. I liked when he was like “What do you think?” and he was like “Who are you talking too?” I thought the pre-k guy was funny. 

Lee Lee: When the big guy finally talked.

Who would you recommend this movie to? Friends or others? 

Jayda: People who like Inside Out, teenagers, and not brothers who think that you’re like an angry teen. 

Ty: People who liked the first one. 

Lee Lee: Indi, Elle. 

Do you think it’s for older kids? 

Jayda: I think that it has different jokes for all ages. 

Ty: I’d say it’s for all ages. 

Lee Lee: 7 year olds, 5 year olds, 10 year olds, 11year olds and mommies and daddies. 

Did you think it was scary?

Jayda: Nah. 

Ty: No. No. No. 

Lee Lee: No. 

Would you want to watch it again? 

Jayda: Yea. I feel like it’s a type of movie where you have to watch it twice to let it sink in. 

Ty: Maybe

Lee Lee: Yes. 

How would you rank it compared to Inside Out? 

Jayda: I think I like the first one a little more but it’s hard to judge cause I think I need to watch it more than once. 

Ty: I’d say this is a little better than Inside Out. 

Lee Lee: Inside Out 2.

What was your favorite part? 

Jayda: The finale. 

Ty: I don’t have one cause the movie was so long. 

Lee Lee: When Embarrassment talked.  

How many stars would you give it?

Jayda: 3.75

Ty: 3.5 or 4 out of 5.

Lee Lee: 10 out of 5. 

Is it worth going to the movies to see it?

Jayda: It depends, I think you could go to see it, but to sink it in it might be better when you have it cause then you can watch it again instead of waiting. 

Ty: If you didn’t like the first one, just watch it at home on Disney+. 

Lee Lee: Pay it at the movie theater.

And I decided to add something new to my reviews, especially when a movie is already out, so if you’re seeing this later you can use these as a kickoff conversation point to talk to your kids about Inside Out 2. Inside Out 2 is now playing in theaters!

When will ‘Inside Out 2’ be on Disney Plus?

No word on when Inside Out 2 will be streaming on Disney+ but it did take awhile for Wish to finally make it to “free” streaming. It was released on Disney+ about a month after digital sales started and several months after it was in theaters.

Overall, Inside Out 2 is a delightful sequel that offers both entertainment and meaningful messages. It’s a thoughtful, engaging film that’s a great option for a family outing. Whether your kids are young or teens themselves, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and talk about. Hopefully this Inside Out 2 Parent review was helpful for you!

May is the month of recognizing and celebrating the cultures, contributions, and influences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI)! This month has been my peak of 2021 thus far, as I have learned so much about AAPI Heritage (my friend Preethi has a whole AAPI learning packet for families that we are loving!). But the teachings and conversion should not stop once June 1 comes by. We should all continue listening and learning from different voices. A great way I have introduced content from varying cultures into my home is through movies. Who doesn’t love them, right? It’s an excellent way for family-friendly fun while educating yourself, and seeing different people and cultures represented in the process. I’ve put together a list of Asian American and Pacific Islander movies on Disney Plus and beyond.

But before we jump into that I want to share a bit of my heart and say how important it is that we stop to appreciate people who are different than us. Pause these movies and have conversations. Our differences are our strength, not a weakness we should feel the need to hide from. Let’s try harder to love, not hate, and stand up for others who need an ally.

Asian American and Pacific Islander movies on Disney Plus

Aladdin

We all know and love this ancient tale. Aladdin, a kind street boy, is granted three wishes by a genie when he finds a magical lamp. He uses his wishes to impress the princess of Agrabah, Princess Jasmine, and along the way goes on an adventure of friendship, love, and conquering the evil usurper Jaffar.

Bend it Like Beckham

An early 2000’s hit, Bend it like Beckham follows the life of Jess Bharma, a British-Indian girl with a love for soccer. Jess does not share her parents’ or community’s wishes for her to get married and instead wants to pursue soccer. This leads to a tale about acceptance, disrupting the status quo, and fighting for what you want.

Big Hero 6

This Academy Award-winning Disney Animation film tells the story of Hiro, a robotics prodigy who loses his brother, Tadashi, in a tragic fire. He completes his brother’s unfinished robotics project, Baymax. He, the robot, and his friends form a superhero team to find the person responsible for the loss of his brother. Word of advice? Bring along some tissues.

Finding ‘Ohana

The theme of reconnecting to your roots is highlighted in this story about two Brooklyn-born siblings who are taken to Oahu to care for their grandfather, who suffered a heart attack. Here, they encounter a journal that sets them on a journey to find a long-lost treasure and, in turn, a journey of discovery.

The Jungle Book

Forget about your worries and your strife… Based on the literary classic by Rudyard Kipling, this tale shows how Mowgli, a child raised by wolves, must leave his family to escape Sher Khan, an evil Bengali tiger trying to kill him. Throughout his travels, he meets many other jungle animals and learns more about himself and the world.

Lilo and Stitch

Quirky, funny, and heartwarming. Who doesn’t love Lilo and Stitch? Lilo, a lonely little girl, mistakes Stitch, an unruly alien experiment who crash-landed on Earth as a dog, and adopts him. Lilo and Stitch go on the journey of discovering what friendship is and learn what it means to be a family. Spoiler alert: it means that no one gets left behind.

Moana

After the plants and fish start to die on her island, teenage Moana must brave the open sea to return the heart of goddess Te Fitti from Maui, a demigod, and bring balance back to nature. You will love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, along with the beautiful exploration of Polynesian culture. I know I did! Plus the soundtrack? Amazing!! 

Mulan (1998)

A Disney animated classic, the film explores the journey of a Chinese woman, Mulan, who takes the place of her frail father in the army by disguising herself as a man. This ancient tale aims to show the flaws in patriarchal beliefs and systems.

Mulan (2020)

The 2020 live-action remake of the 1998 Disney original tells the same story of Mulan, a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in a war, with slight changes to keep it fresh. This version eliminates the musical element and adopts a more realistic, serious, and dramatic tone.

Raya and the Last Dragon

It has been 500 years since dragons and humans lived in harmony in the magical Land of Kumandra. When Druun, a species of evil monsters came, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. When the Druun returns, Raya must find the last dragon to destroy the Druun and restore peace.

Rip Girls

This Disney Channel movie tells the story of 13-year-old Sydney Miller, who learns how to surf while visiting a plantation she inherited, called Makai. A lot of self-discovery needs to be done when she is faced with the decision of selling the five-generation old plantation or not. Rip Girls takes you right back to the early 2000s Disney aesthetic, and I love the nostalgia!

UP

A favorite in my home! UP is not only entertaining but teaches you so much about life that you thought you already knew but didn’t. When Carl’s wife Ellie dies, the 78-year-old commits himself to achieve one of his lifelong goals, finding Paradise Falls. He ties many balloons to his house (I’m talking about a lot of balloons) and begins to fly away in it to the South American wilderness. However, in mid sky, he shockingly discovers a stowaway, Russel, a little boy-scout who complicates his journey. 

Wendy Wu

Wendy Wu’s perfect teenage life is flipped upside down forever when Chinese monk, Shen, shares with her that she is a reincarnated Yin warrior. She is faced with tough decisions and challenges to fulfill her purpose to defeat the ancient evil warrior Yin Lo. It has action, humor, and Brenda Song! What’s not to like?

Turning Red

Turning Red is another excellent addition to the Pixar library of animated films! Featuring an incredibly well-told story filled with humor, heartwarming moments, memorable characters, and valuable lessons on the importance of staying true to yourself, Turning Red is perfect for the whole family.

Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Shang-Chi is an action story with a brilliant blend of mystical, otherworldly scenes and down-to-earth characters wrapped into a heartwarming tale that captures Asian culture beautifully. If you are after cinematography and special effects that will make you gasp in awe, this is the one for you. 

Asian American and Pacific Islander Short Films on Disney Plus

Bao

One of my favorite movies proves that just because it is a short film does not make it any less impactful! Bao is about a Chinese-Canadian mother who is experiencing empty nest syndrome. With no children in the house, she becomes lonely and sad, however, gets an unexpected and intriguing second chance at experiencing motherhood when her steamed bun comes to life. Bao is an Academy Award winner for a reason!

Float

This short film is the fourth to be produced in Pixar’s “SparkShorts” program, and it is undoubtedly one of the program’s best received. Float is essentially a story about acceptance and love. It is about a father who struggles to grapple with his son’s new ability to fly. He attempts to ground his son and is frustrated by his child’s inability to be ‘normal’ but soon realizes that his son’s happiness is more important than outsiders’ opinions. 

Lava

This beautifully produced short film is a love letter of sorts to tropical islands and the oceans surrounding them. The story follows a lonely volcano that spends his days watching the wildlife interacting with their mates around him while he remains without one. In his sadness, he sings to the ocean every day for thousands of years, not knowing that a female undersea volcano listens to his singing every day and has fallen in love with him. It’s a touching tale told through stunning visuals and a definite must-watch this month and always. 

Sanjay’s Super Team

It’s only seven minutes but packed with quality content! Sanjay’s Super Team tells the story of a young Indian boy who imagines Hindu gods as superheroes when he becomes bored when his father makes him meditate. The film is based on a (mostly) true story as writer and director Sanjay Patel also let his imagination run wild to get him through his father’s mandatory mediation sessions. 

AAPI Movies Beyond Disney Plus

My Neighbor Totoro

It’s an old one, but the best ones tend to be. This Japanese fantasy film tells the tale of two girls who move to the countryside to be closer to their ailing mother. They soon meet Totoro, a giant rabbit-like creature who is a spirit, and go on marvelous adventures. It’s a family film in its purest form.

Ponyo

If you haven’t already noticed from this list, my family and I love Japanese movies. Ponyo is a perfect representation as to why. The film is about a goldfish who escapes from the ocean and is rescued by a five-year-old human boy. As they bond with each other, the story deals with resolving Ponyo’s desire to become a human girl. It’s complex, deep, and highly artistic. 

Koshien: Japan’s Field of Dreams

Need a shot of inspiration? This unparalleled documentary about a high school baseball team and their journey to winning the championship is sure to give you an adrenaline high! Not to mention that it teaches you so much about baseball’s place in Japanese society. 

Kubo and the Two Strings

With a star-studded voice cast and breathtaking animation, Kubo and the Two Strings is one to remember! The film revolves around Kubo, a young boy who wields a magical shamisen and whose left eye was stolen during infancy. He must battle evil to protect his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. 

Okko’s Inn

This is a beloved tale about Okko, an orphan who goes to live in the countryside with her grandmother at a traditional Japanese inn. She soon falls into the tedious routine of caring for the building, but everything changes when she discovers kind spirits who keep her company and help her become comfortable in her new environment. It’s full of energy and color!

Over the Moon

I’ve already booked time off in my calendar to rewatch this fantastic production! Over the Moon tells the story of Fei Fei, an adventurous girl who builds a rocket ship to meet a mythical goddess on the moon. It takes you on a visual and emotional journey and stays on your mind well after the credits have rolled. 

The Speed Cubers

Another documentary that teaches you a whole lot while still being funny and entertaining! It follows the journeys of Rubik’s Cube-solving champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdeg, with twists and turns throughout to keep you intrigued. But it goes further than just telling the story of competition; it explores friendship, respect, and hope for the future.

Spelling the Dream

An intriguing and educational insight into the Indian American experience and the traditional work ethic they practice. Spelling the Dream is a documentary about the recent obsession with competitive spelling-bees amongst the Indian American community. It explores critical themes of success, the “American dream,” and the immigrant family’s place in this discourse. It may not be the lightest watch, but it is most definitely an important one. 

Spirited Away

A classic that will always be impactful! Spirited Away tells the story of a 10-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood, enters the world of Kami (spirits). Her parents get turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba, and she now has to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world. It is vivid, magical and sweeps you away with the protagonist to a whole new realm for two hours of adventures.

Wish Dragon

Taking place in modern day China, determined teen Din is longing to reconnect with his childhood best friend when he meets a wish-granting dragon that shows him the magic of possibilities. Make sure you write this one in on your checklist because it’s a good one you’ll want to watch together! Here’s our spoiler-free review of Wish Dragon to help you know what you’re in for.

The Farewell 

If you enjoy foreign language films and appreciate the very different humor of Asian movies, then this could be for you. Telling the story of a family who creates an imaginary wedding to spend time together, The Farewell is a genuinely unique movie that is uplifting, heartbreaking, and comical in equal measures.

It’s so important to expose yourself to new cultures and experiences. It only serves to enrich your own life and understanding of the world. These movies are beautiful, informative, and entertaining. Getting lost in this thought-provoking content is a perfect way to spend AAPI month or anytime throughout the year!

One thing I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is giving each of my kids what they need to thrive. I say “lately” but really I’ve been doing this their entire lives. Specifically though I’m zeroing in on some big things to help my younger two: Ty and Lee Lee.

Lee Lee

I got an email about gifted and talented testing for the elementary school kids and as I looked over the little questionnaire I was surprised by how many of the qualities Lee Lee seems to possess. I always though GT meant oober smart and advanced for their age with the best grades. But it seems to be tailored more towards creative kids with advanced vocabulary and cognitive skills, which is totally her. We shall see how the screening goes and if it’s something she’ll join. It doesn’t make a difference to me, I just want to make sure my kids are getting the most tailored support possible for their specific needs.

Speaking of Lee Lee, she had some art selected for the district art show. This is a first for us (as are many things with Lee Lee, always keeping things fresh and bringing that #thirdkid energy). We are going tomorrow night. She asked if she could wear a princess dress and I’m like “sure, why not?!” I’ll let you know how that goes.

Ty

Ty turns 11 this week. Part of me can hardly believe this. He’s still a little 8 year old in my mind, but he’s also getting so tall. He’s about to start flag football again and I’m excited to watch him play. Actually if I’m being honest I hope he gets a chance to play because they changed the age grids and he’s with older kids again. I’m worried they won’t throw to my guy! Anyway, I’m just going to try to stay positive and cheer the loudest.

Since it’s the off season for college and NFL football Ty is diving back into this animal knowledge. This past week he’s been asking everyone in the family what animal they’d want to be if they could be any animal. He said he’d like to be an orca because they’re at the top of the food chain and they live in families (called pods) their entire life so he wouldn’t have to be alone. I thought this was so sweet, especially since he often asks us if he can live with us forever.

Jayda

After being homeschooled since 4th grade, Jayda went back to public school in January for the second half of 8th grade. Not only that but she tried out for the high school cheer team. And made it! She’ll be cheering on the JV fall starting… Well, I’d say starting this fall but she already cheered at her first high school game last weekend for girls soccer playoffs. So wild. I can not wait to go to the football games as a family this fall.

She also saved her money (greenlight is seriously an awesome motivational tool) to go to an Olivia Rodrigo concert last month and she loved it. Seeing how much the extra fees were she opted to buy seats further up but was happy just to be in the room. I bought my ticket and mostly enjoyed her enjoying it. Not saying the concert wasn’t fun, it just wasn’t totally my vibe.

New with Me

Where to begin? Oh kidding. I wish I didn’t feel spread so thin with everywhere I’m posting these days. I’ve got a lot of day to day up on Instagram but I don’t feel like it’s the best place anymore to share my innermost thoughts. Maybe that’s in my head, but I feel like I need to put more thought into what I’m saying there versus her on my blog where I can dump all of my thoughts more like a journal.

I watched Love is Blind season 6 and loved it! Probably their best season yet, or at least since those first two seasons. Jayda and I also binged and caught up on The Bachelor without being spoiled. Can you believe it?! And now that we’ve finished (last night) I want to re-watch the entire season and see why the heck he picked… What’s her name? Kelsey? I just did not see that coming. But kudos to Daisy for following her intuition. Love her for that.

I’m re-watching Desperate Housewives for I believe the 4th or 5th time. I watched during each of my maternity leaves and I believe this is my 2nd watch without a newborn. I’m also re-reading the Crescent City series so I can read the new book that I pre-ordered but I’m reading so slow that the 4th book may be announced before I catch up. I’m also re-reading Ask and it is Given and working hard on beefing up my manifestation juices. We have a slow start on work this year but I’m feeling good about things turning around soon. Gratitude is the first step to manifestation. And I’m feeling utterly grateful for all of the many blessings in my life.

Alright, well how’s that for a Spring life update? Nothing completely major happened but a lot of little amazing things. Which I think we should try to celebrate more often.

Though it can never rival the Family Movie Night tradition, my husband and I love filling our free time snuggling up on the couch, making some popcorn, and watching our favorite films. It’s not as easy for us to get out of the house right now so putting the kids to bed early and enjoying a some time alone is usually as good as it gets.

Buttttt… my husband and I have very different tastes in movies so it can often take a full feature-length of time before we’ve even picked what we’re going to watch! But there are a few romantic comedy classics that we can both agree on (or that I overruled him on) so I’ve made that list and I’m bringing it here to you! I’ve included some great genre bridgers on this list as well as some lesser-known favorites that I’m sure you’ll love!

Ever dates someone with a secret? Well, in this romantic action-adventure comedy, Cole (played by Chris Evans) discovers Sadie is a secret agent! Watch this Valentine’s Day movie for some laughs and love as they get swept on an international adventure.

Hitch

Will Smith stars as a smooth-talking man who falls for a workaholic columnist. Oh, and all while helping a shy accountant woo a beautiful heiress. Plus the 90%/10% rule is a classic!

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Benjamin Barry bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. Andie Anderson is writing a story on how to lose a guy in 10 days. So what’ll happen when the pair meet one another and start to fall in love?

Jerry Maguire

A sports agent has a moral epiphany and evaluates his life. Very few stick by him in this feel-good film. “You had me at ‘hello.”

I’ll never forget the excitement on my daughter’s face when she saw a Disney Princess that looked an awful like her. Never mind that Moana is Polynesian, and we are Black. It didn’t matter to her. She had long curly hair, brown skin, and big brown eyes. To her, they were just alike. The realization that representation matters continues to hit me time and time again. Like now, this same daughter is telling me she wants to be an actress. There are a lot of Black actors in movies and on TV, but am I giving her the chance to watch them? To see herself up on the big screen? 

Something I’ve been working to do on this blog is really narrow my focus down to the main pinnacles. These are things I’m passionate about and want to share with you. Family and parenting are at the center, but diversity-related news and Disney are two other things I could talk all day about. It’s not often all of those things overlap but today they do. I’m going to share movies and to watch with your kids this month for Black History Month. And let’s be real, beyond. 

I feel like I’ve been pretty good about keeping a diverse collection of children’s books on our shelves at home. I’ve even highlighted some of those here, and shared some books we like to read for Black History Month. But movies… I could probably be a little better with that. Especially since I have a little girl dreaming of being a Black actress herself. 

I’ve compiled a list to get you started. You can search these movies on Disney Plus and add them to your watchlist for this month. Don’t have Disney+ yet? Sign up for your free trial here.

Movies to Watch on Disney+ During Black History Month & Beyond

When I spoke with my husband about how to compile this list we had a bit of a debacle deciding if it should be content around real Black History. Such as movies like The Ruby Bridges story. Or Remember the Titans. Or, if I should instead include fictional stories like Black Panther and Sister Act 2. And stories that maybe don’t involve American-Americans at all but Africans, Jamaicans, and Black people around the world. Movies like Cool Runnings, and Queen of Katwe. That are based on true stories but aren’t necessarily intertwined into Black (American) History. 

As a parent wanting to give my kids a world view. And in general just wanting to show my kids more brown faces telling good stories on TV. I’ve decided to include all the movies in all of those categories. And since many of the stars in the film are Black actors from the US, I think it can count that way too, as being in the “Black films” genre. 

I’m breaking these down into historical-based films (US and non US based); the popular must-see films; and then some hidden gems you may not have heard of. The nice thing about these being on Disney+ is though there may be some tough conversations and topics going on, it’s all family-friendly content. 

I’ve updated this list for 2021 and our list now includes 30 movies to watch this month! It’s including some of the new movies we now know and love that have been added to the streaming service. Movies such as Hidden Figures and Soul.

Historical Black Movies on Disney Plus

These are historical dramas that feature a majority Black cast. The first three are based on American history, and the last two feature Black stories from other countries.

Remember the Titans: The true story of a new African-American head football coach and his high school team on their first season as a team comprised as both black and white players. This is one of my all-time favorite movies and one I’m excited to watch with my kids for the first time this month. 

Ruby Bridges: The story of bright 6-year-old Ruby Bridges. Chosen to be the first African-American to integrate her local New Orleans elementary school. She encounters the true ugliness of racism for the first time. But the love of her mother and father help her through this heroic struggle. 

Glory Road: Coach Don Haskins takes a job at a small Texas University and decide he’s going to start the best players you can. Even when that means forming `history’s first all African-American lineup. 

Queen of Katwe: A Ugandan girl’s life changes forever when she discovers she has an amazing talent for chess. This is one I love watching with and without my kids. A true inspiring story. 

Cool Runnings: Based on a true story about four Jamaican athletes go to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the Winter Olympics. A classic that we recently enjoyed with our kids. They loved it and really took to the inspirational message. 

Hidden Figures: Three brilliant African-American women at NASA — serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.

Chadwick Boseman: A Tribute For A King: A touching documentary celebrating the life, legacy, and career of Chadwick Boseman. The show highlights the astonishing cultural impact Boseman made both on and off-screen. It is truly a worthwhile watch this Black History Month.

Breaking2: Breaking2 follows three elite African runners as they set about breaking the two-hour marathon barrier. The documentary follows the athletes from the second they are chosen to the moment they cross the finish line. Breaking2 is an inspirational masterpiece that the whole family will love!

Red Tails: Black Fighter Pilots get the chance to prove themselves during WWII.

Safety: Based on a true story, Safety follows the life of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, a talented freshman football player who was forced to raise his younger brother on campus after home life became unpredictable. This movie is a heartwarming take on the importance of family bonds and is sure to become a favorite in your household.

Rise: Rise unfolds a gripping narrative of resilience and redemption as a determined individual overcomes adversity to achieve greatness against all odds.

Must-See Movies on Disney Plus

These movies are blockbuster hits, or movies that I think should have been. Not based on history but feature either a majority Black cast or the main character is Black.

The Princess and the Frog: A beautiful girl named Tiana has dreams of owning her own restaurant. This modern twist on a classic tale has music to get you all dancing and a story that’ll keep your kids captivated. This movie features Disney’s first Black princess. 

Black Panther: Marvel’s first movie all about a Black superhero, my personal favorite Marvel movie, and my kids’ first introduction to superheroes. If your kids are young or not used to action superhero movies you may want to watch it first to see if it’s too intense for them. But my oh my it’s a beautiful film and earns its place on my must-see list. It’s a must-see for sure.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit: Woopie Goldberg back as Sister Mary Clarence heads to teach at a troubled inner-city school. The power of music helps inspire the classroom to new heights. I loved this movie growing up and can’t wait to see what my kids think. 

The Color of Friendship: A white South African girl finds herself in a difficult situation when she is sent to spend a term with a Black family in America. This movie was made WAY before it’s time. But is great to get some tough conversations going with your kids. And oh yea, “the word” makes an appearance. 

Soul: Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you… YOU? In 2020, Pixar Animation Studios takes you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions. We love this movie so much. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella: A modern twist on the age-old favorite Cinderella. Featuring Whitney Houston and Whoopie Goldberg, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a fun and inspiring musical masterpiece perfect for the whole family.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever: The sequel to the amazing Black Panther movie, and boy is it good! After King T’Challa’s death, world powers try to intervene in the kingdom of Wakanda. Queen Ramonda and the people of Wakanda fight to protect the kingdom and forge a new path for their nation. Want to read my full review to know if it’s too scary for kids? Check it out here.

Hidden Gems Featuring Black characters on Disney Plus

Most of the movies making this list aired as Disney Channel Original Movies when we were kids. They feature a majority Black cast, or the main character is Black. 

Jump In: A teenager is pressured by his father to become a boxer – but a local girl introduces him to the very different sport of rope-jumping.

Up, Up and Away: Ok, Black Panther may be the first Marvel movie with a black superhero as the star. But years earlier, this Disney Channel Original Movie features a whole family of black superheroes. Except Scott Marshall, anxiously awaiting his 14th birthday, and a sign of his special abilities.

The Cheetah Girls & The Cheetah Girls 2: Raven Symoné stars in this movie featuring four teens aiming to take the world by storm with their music. In the second movie they return for more adventures and head to Spain to participate in a music festival. 

Let It Shine : A teenage rapper (played by Tyler James Williams) must use his musical talent to battle his nemesis and win the girl of his dreams.

Hounded: A teenager (played by Tahj Mowry) ends up being hounded by a well-groomed and seemingly cute and tiny dog that actually turns out to be a nightmare of a beast.

Twitches and Twitches Too: Black witches? Heck yea! Two teen witches (played by Tia and Tamera Mowry) were separated at birth and adopted by two different families. They meet on their 21st birthday and must use their powers to save the world in which they were born. Where their birth mother still lives.

Life-Size 2: Grace Manning, the confident and funny CEO of Marathon Toys, a huge toy company started by her mother that is most famous for manufacturing the iconic Eve doll (played by Tyra Banks). Grace is also a hot mess in the middle of her quarter-life crisis and realizing that she is in over her head as CEO.

Jett Jackson: The Movie: Jett (played by Lee Thomson Young (RIP)) decides to quit Silverstone and lead a normal life. On the day of his last episode he is hit on the head with a prop and in his dream he is Silverstone. He is the only one who realizes that this is a dream.

The Proud Family Movie: In this animated movie Penny and her family are lured on an all expenses paid vacation where a mad scientist captures them. He refuses to let them go because Oscar won’t reveal his one of his secret Proud Snacks formulas.

The Poof Point: A bad experiment makes two inventors and younger and younger. Their teenage children (played by Tahj Mowry and Dawn Lewis) must work together to get their parents back to normal before they disappear forever. 

A Wrinkle in Time: After the disappearance of her father, three mystical beings lead Meg and her brother on an epic journey to find him. A Wrinkle in Time is packed with adventure and will transport the kids (and adults) to a land of pure imagination!

The Haunted Mansion: Eddie Murphy stars as a real estate agent whose family comes face-to-face with ghosts in a creepy old mansion. They have to break the mansion of its age-old curse before the clock strikes 13. 

Sneakerella: An aspiring sneaker designer from Queens has to hide his talents from his stepfather and stepbrothers as they try to sabotage his every step. If this sounds familiar, you’d be correct, it’s a modern twist on the classic Cinderella story set in New York City’s sneaker culture.

Shook: Add this movie to your family movie night and it will take you on an intense journey through the intersection of art, activism, and identity, as a talented young dancer confronts societal challenges and discovers her voice in a world that demands both resilience and self-expression.

Bonus ON Disney+

Look out for John Henry on American Legends. His short film is also on the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection. Netflix still has the streaming rights to this movie. If you are one of the lucky ones with both streaming services, that is definitely worth the watch. If not, hang tight. It should be arriving soon! Want to celebrate Black History Month? Try watching some of these Black History month movies for all ages to educate and inspire!

I’ll never forget how it felt being the only black kid in my 5th grade class as we listened to a lesson on slavery. I wasn’t taught much Black History at home, so much of what I learned was in school, and you can imagine that was extremely limited. It felt uncomfortable. And I never want that for my kids.

I’ve made a consistent effort to have discussions and lessons with my kids about various points in Black History so that they can feel empowered and inspired by where we come from. I was so impressed with Jayda when she proudly shared about her ancestors who were enslaved for her Heritage project at school. And I hope the same will ring true for others.

It’s important that we celebrate the Black Americans who have been fundamental to our nation’s long and proud history. As most schools teach a curriculum that focuses on the traditional achievements of white figures, the contribution of African-American achievements to society can sometimes be overlooked.

Black History is Everyone’s History

While I believe Black History is EVERYONE’S history, and should be learned about year round (in our regular history classes), I love that Black History Month gives us special opportunities to give special attention to the achievements of black people. And to remember that people of color helped make this country so great. We recognize the struggles of our ancestors and carry on their ideas and journeys.

And one way to do that is by watching movies! (You know me and my love of watching movies!) But seriously, Black History Month movies are a great way to educate your kids on diversity, inclusion, and race issues that our country has faced in the past and still dealing with today.

Diversity in film matters, and it’s fantastic that I live in a time where I’m able to show my children so many great movies centered around the stories of African-American heroes. My kids can watch these movies and feel represented.

So I’ve put together the perfect Black History Month movie checklist for all ages and I hope you enjoy some of these during this month with your family! Let me know on Instagram which ones were your favorites!

Black History Month Movies for All Ages

A Ballerina’s Tale

A brilliant documentary on African-American ballerina Misty Copeland’s life, the first black ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre. There are some brilliantly touching themes around race, identity, and body image. A great watch.

Glory Road

Another biography based on a true story. In 1966, Texas Western coach Don Haskins led the first all-black starting line-up for a college basketball team to the NCAA national championship.

Hidden Figures

A great movie released with huge fanfare. A team of African-American female mathematicians play a vital role in NASA during the U.S. space program’s early years.

Queen of Katwe

Inspired by chess after watching The Queen’s Gambit? Queen of Katwe is the perfect next watch as a Ugandan girl sees her world rapidly change after being introduced to the beautiful game.

Remember the Titans

Based on a real story – starring Denzel Washington – as a new African-American coach, his high school team must manage their first season as a racially integrated unit.

Ruby Bridges

Another true tale, as Ruby Bridges – just six years old – is picked to be the first African-American to integrate into her local elementary school in 1960. She is subject to racism for the first time in her life.

Safety

Ray-Ray McElrathbey is a freshman football player for Clemson University. He must battle family adversity as he secretly raises his brother on campus after his home life starts to wobble.

The Color of Friendship

A brilliant eye-opener of a film, as a white South African finds a new outlook on life after she spends a semester with a black family in America.

The Gabby Douglas Story

The biopic of Gabby Douglas, who overcame immense adversity to become the first African American ever to be named Individual All-Around Champion in artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Games.

The Jackie Robinson Story

The original 1950s documentary of Jackie Robinson and his rise through baseball’s segregated divisions to become the first African-American to play in the Major League.

March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World

An emotional tribute to the inspiration that is Dr. Martin Luther King from his sister, Christine, as she recalls the historical march and speech that single-handedly changed a nation for the better.

Woodlawn

A true story of the integration of an Alabama high-school football team and the rise of former Miami Dolphins running back, Tony Nathan. This inspiring movie offers watches a context for the racial strife still felt today and, more importantly, the solution for resolving that strife. 

The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar

This movie chronicles the real-life story of Simone Biles, the inspiring gymnast frequently referred to as “the greatest gymnast ever.” Courage to Soar is an uplifting tale and a great way to teach young kids about the struggles of life and the importance of believing in yourself.

Belle (2013)

A beautifully portrayed period story about an illegitimate, mixed-race daughter of a British admiral that plays a crucial role in the campaign to abolish slavery in England. Belle is as enjoyable as it is important!

HENRY BOX BROWN

This movie chronicles the inspiring true story of a courageous man who escaped slavery in a wooden crate, showcasing the indomitable spirit and resilience that defined his quest for liberty and equality in 19th-century America.

AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD

Pick this movie for Black History Month as it captures the heartwarming and empowering journey of a group of resilient youngsters who, amidst adversity, discover their voices and courageously navigate a path towards change, leaving an indelible mark on the world they inherit.

we are the radical monarchs

This movie follows the inspiring and transformative journey of the Radical Monarchs, a trailblazing group empowering young girls of color through activism, self-love, and social justice education, as they navigate challenges and redefine what it means to be leaders in their communities.

Black History Month Movies for Ages 10+

42

The 2013 version of the Jackie Robinson story. The late Chadwick Boseman stars as Robinson in this updated, hard-hitting biography.

Hairspray

One of America’s greatest musicals as Tracy Turnblad, achieves her dream of becoming a regular on the Corny Collins Dance Show. And she uses that platform to speak out on segregation. Much to the disgust of one of the show’s former stars.

Loving

Richard and Mildred Loving are a beautiful couple arrested for interracial marriage in Virginia in the 1960s. Their legal battle ended with a historic decision in the Supreme Court in 1967. A brilliant story and one that means so much to my husband and me personally.

Red Tails

While there’s segregation on the ground, in the skies, a crew of African-American pilots is called up to fight in Italy in 1944. A tribute to our unsung heroes in World War Two.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham

As the Watson’s, a family seeking some tough love for their troublemaking son, decide to embark on a summer-road trip journey to Birmingham, Alabama, history unfolds during the civil rights movement and changes their lives (and the entire nation) forever.

Betty and Coretta 

After the death of their husbands, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz form a friendship. Through remarkable strength, they carry on the civil rights movement and, in doing so, become role models for women all over the world.

King Richard

The true strength of King Richard comes from the messages and morals it promotes, including believing in yourself, never giving up, remaining humble, and respecting yourself even when you fail. This movie is truly beautiful and is a must-watch for both children and teenagers (especially girls!)

The Pursuit of Happyness

Based on a true story, The Pursuit of Happyness traces the fleeting ups and downs of single-father and salesman Chris Gardner. The movie portrays the emotions, sacrifices, dreams, pressures, and love of a man who will stop at nothing to provide for his family. Get the tissues ready because this is a tear-jerker!

Black Panther

Black Panther is fresh and unique, with a gripping plot and incredible performances from the majority-black cast. Featuring the late but great Chad wick Boseman. This film will leave MCU fanatics on the edge of their seats – so grab some popcorn and strap in!

Black Panther Wakanda Forever

The sequel to the amazing Black Panther movie, and boy is it good! After King T’Challa’s death, world powers try to intervene in the kingdom of Wakanda. Queen Ramonda and the people of Wakanda fight to protect the kingdom and forge a new path for their nation.

Devotion

Devotion tells the story of the first Black aviator in U.S. Navy history. He becomes best friends with another fighter pilot named Tom Hudner, and together they help turn the tide during the Korean War. This movie tells the story of their heroic sacrifices and how they became the most celebrated Navy wingmen. 

SOUNDER

Sounder is a timeless masterpiece capturing the enduring spirit of an African American family in the rural South during the Great Depression, exploring love, resilience, and the pursuit of education against the backdrop of racial injustice.

Black History Month Movies for Ages 13+

Coach Carter

High school basketball coach Ken Carter played by Samuel L. Jackson imposes a strict regime of written contracts, respectful behavior, and academic success onto his side’s underperforming players.

Just Mercy

A powerful and thought-provoking true-story. Renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.

Malcolm X

A biographical thriller covering the influential Black Nationalist leader, this movie explores every aspect, from Malcolm X’s early life to his ministry as a member of the Nation of Islam.

Selma

Based on the Selma to Montgomery march in Alabama in 1965, Dr. Martin Luther king Jr’s campaign to secure equal voting rights is chronicled in a fascinating and absorbing movie.

The Butler

Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents as a butler at the White House. A great film as Cecil watches the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other significant events affect his own life, his family, and American society.

The Great Debaters

A drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College Texas. Tolson inspired his African-American students to form a debate team, which eventually challenged Harvard in the national championship.

The Hate U Give

Starr Carter is constantly switching between the black neighborhood she lives in and the white school she attends. The two collide when Starr witnesses the shooting of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.

Harriet

Based on the story of the iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, this movie follows the story of a family of enslaved people. They tricked by a plantation owner who fails to stay faithful to his promises of freedom as their daughter, Harriet, escapes and seeks justice. 

The Woman King

This epic film is based on true historical events and follows a group of all female warriors with unprecedented skill as they protect one of the most powerful states of Africa known as The Kingdom of Dahomey. Set in the 1800s, The Woman King follows General Nanisca as she trains the next generation to protect the kingdom from a new threat.

marshall

In this gripping biopic, “Marshall” illuminates the early career of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice, as he fearlessly battles injustice and racism in a landmark case that would shape his legacy.

rustin

“Rustin” delves into the life of Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the American civil rights movement and a master strategist behind events like the March on Washington. This compelling documentary explores Rustin’s pivotal role and the challenges he faced as an openly gay activist.

till

This Black History Month movie recounts the tragic and pivotal story of Emmett Till, a young African American boy whose brutal murder in 1955 became a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. This powerful film examines the enduring impact of Till’s death and the pursuit of justice that followed.

This list of movies are what I felt are best to enjoy as a family and have discussions around. Of course this list isn’t all inclusive but ones I recommend as more easily to digest with younger kids. Alright, there’s actually a lot I want to talk about. What I’m watching, what I’m reading. The pool we’re building in the backyard. Most of these things I talk about in my instagram stories but they go away in 24 hours. Maybe this here will be a better spot to keep it all organized and contained. We’ll see. No promises. No resolutions. However, there will be goals.

But before I jump into this year’s goals how about I share how I did on last year’s goals from 2023? I made a bucket list instead of goals last year.

1. First, to cozyfy my house.

Result: Did it! Mostly. I didn’t manage to do my entire house but some main areas were my back porch, which I did get a sectional for it for my birthday. We also made the piano room SO fun with a book wall.

2. Have fun doing things I’m bad at.

Result: Did it! I ran at 10k at Walt Disney World with two of my best friends. It was so fun. The training wasn’t very fun but the finishline was.

3. Go on a Disney Cruise.

Result: Did it! I was planning to take my family on the Disney Wish which at the time was the newest ship (I think the Treasure is launching this year). But we were invited to attend a Marvel Day at Sea cruise and it was the BEST time.

4. Visit New York City.

Result: Accomplished! I was hoping to take a family trip to go visit our friends. Instead I took a trip with Ty to visit his best friend. Then ANOTHER trip with Jayda for the Percy Jackson premiere.

5. Practice Piano

Result: Did it! I’m still not great, but I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve practiced at least once a week for the last year. Some times more. I’m hoping to practice at least three times a week this year.

6. Sign Lee Lee up for dance

Result: Fail. Ok, I DID sign her up. But she quit after like a month. Thankfully I didn’t pay for the recital and all of the costumes. She seems to like art and less structured activities. I did register her for kinder though and that has been an adventure!

7. Watch Jayda perform.

Result: Accomplished! Jayda performed in Sleepy Hallow and with another cast in The Lightening Thief Musical again. Now she’s performing in two plays this spring at her middle school. Yes, she’s back in public school.

8. Cheer Ty on at football and new friendships

Result: Mostly accomplished. Ty double teamed in the fall and had so much fun. He did make some new friends and I’m hoping we can nurture those more this year. He also got to participate in the BYU football camp and had a blast. I signed him up to do another camp this year and he’s excited.

9. Write more on my blog

Result: Fail! Ok, I didn’t do absolutely terrible. I fell off the wagon for a bit. And I also didn’t do that great promoting my Movie Night Journal. I did find a mentor, more like a borrow-a-mentor like I’d hoped and he kinda talked me down from some other product ideas I had. It was the right decision.

I didn’t have grand goals in 2023 but wound up taking one on when we went from just getting pool bids to actually building a pool. Fixing up the yard and enjoying that are a big part of my goals for this year. But I think I’ll save those for *gasp* my next post. Which hopefully will be sometime before 2025.

I’m still plugging away at movie reviews though. Things got weird in the middle of last year but I’m back on the wagon and trying to keep at it this year.

What I thought 

Mean Girls is one of those movies us millennials love or love to hate. I personally fall into the first group. But when it comes to movies I loved growing up I usually prefer studios stay away from remaking them. But if they must remake them, they’d better be different. One of my biggest gripes about the 2019 remake of The Lion King was the fact that it was an unemotional re-animated version of the exact same movie. Now Mean Girls the MUSICAL? That I can roll with. Personally I haven’t seen the broadway spin on the movie, so I can’t compare the music or performances there so I felt like I went in pretty fresh. 

I went with my 13-year-old daughter, a good friend, and an open mind. I came out with songs I immediately wanted to hear again, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. As a mom of a homeschooled kid who just started at public school a line that really resonated with me was when Cady’s mom told her “I think you’re learning things now that I don’t know how to teach you.” 

What parents need to know about the new ‘Mean Girls’ movie 

Parents wondering if the new Mean Girls is ok for kids should know that this movie follows a similar storyline to the 2004 movie, but this time the kids have upgraded to smartphones and social media, however it’s still all about the epic clash between between the new girl Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) and Regina George (Reneé Rapp). And of course the cute guy in the middle of it all. The movie includes steamy kissing, cleavage, dancing and twerking in revealing costumes and clothing. When it comes to language you’ll hear everything from “a–hole” to “sh*t” “slut” “b*tch” and more. There’s also some vaping and alcohol use as well as violence and danger with school buses. 

I personally loved the diverse cast. I knew Auli’i Cravalho (voice of Moana) was in it, but didn’t realize until seeing it that she was playing the role of Janis, Cady’s first sidekick, along with Damian (Jaquel Spivey) both queer characters. Then Regina herself was on the gorgeously thicker side, which I loved to see. 

If you enjoyed the Lindsay Lohan version, you might enjoy this twist on the tale that takes it all up a notch and I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes down as another cult classic in years to come. 

Parent review

What I liked

I already went into what I liked. The diversity. The cameos of the returning cast and the talented new cast. I also really enjoyed the music.

What I didn’t like

I wasn’t crazy about some of the product placement which I’m not sure I’ve ever been quite as aware of in a movie before. Perhaps it’s because Elf is a product I’ve bought and it seemed like an almost misplaced match (wouldn’t Regina go for a more expensive makeup brand?). But it didn’t bother me enough to distract from the movie. 

Is ‘Mean Girls’ ok for kids?

If language, teen drinking and the occasional sexual innuendo aren’t your vibe, you can wait until Mean Girls is streaming and run it through Vidangel to bleep out what you want. It was originally going to go straight to streaming on Paramount+ so I imagine that’s where it’ll head after its theatrical run. Use my VidAngel link to get a free trial!

MPAA Rating: It’s rated PG-13 for sexual material, strong language, and teen drinking.

It has a run time of 122 minutes which feels just the right pacing. 

But enough of what I thought, here’s what my kids have to say about Mean Girls. Here’s what my 13-year-old daughter thought.

What did you think of ‘Mean Girls’?

Jayda: I thought it was good. It had a lot of the same stuff from the original and some new stuff too and I really liked that. 

What life lesson did you learn in ‘Mean Girls’? What message was the movie trying to get across?

Jayda: To not worry about what other people think of you. You’re special in your own way. Do what you’re good at, and don’t be a mean girl. 

Who was your favorite character?

Jayda: Regina or Cady.

What was the funniest part to you? 

Jayda: Some of the new jokes. 

Who would you recommend this movie to? Friends or others? 

Jayda: People who liked the original Mean Girls. Or people my age who just wanna see it, maybe they’ve seen the original too. 

What Age do you think it is for? Do You Think ‘Mean Girls’ is Kid-Friendly?

Jayda: I think it’s for the age 13 and up but it depends on what the parents think are good for the kid to watch. 

Would you want to watch it again? 

Jayda: Yes, definitely. Maybe not in theaters but definitely when it comes out. 

How would you rank it compared to other movies we’ve seen recently? 

Jayda: I really liked it. I was excited for it cause yes it is a remake but it’s a musical and I really like musicals so I thought it was a fun twist on it. I think I liked it more than a lot of movies we’ve seen recently. It was a fun mother daughter movie night, or fun to see with friends. 

What was your favorite part? 

Jayda: The song “Someone Gets Hurt” 

How many stars would you give it?

Jayda: Four and a half. I liked it more than the first one.

Is it worth going to the movies to see or picking it for Family movie night?

Jayda: Yes! 

Media Literacy Questions about ‘Mean Girls’

And I decided to add something new to my reviews, especially when a movie is already out, so if you’re seeing this later you can use these as a kickoff conversation point to talk to your kids about Mean Girls. This is in case you want to go a little deeper than “what did you think?” Here are some suggestions you can use as discussion questions. 

1. In the movie, how do characters handle feeling pressure about how they look? Have you ever felt pressure like that?
2. Do you think Mean Girls shows people being okay with themselves, even if they don’t fit in with what others expect?
3. What do you think about the friendships in Mean Girls? Do they remind you of your own friendships? Why or why not?
4. Have you ever had a problem with a friend like the characters in the movie? How did it turn out?
