Momma and I went in for a scheduled appointment this morning and the doc sent us over to the hospital for monitoring again….and we’re still here this time.

If you’re not aware, we did this a week ago also. Momma has been having elevated (but not dangerously high) blood pressure. The doctor put her on bed rest last Tuesday (something she has not been happy about).

Anyway, this time the doctor talked to us about the options and risks and we all decided that waiting longer just didn’t give us a big enough benefit to justify the risks to both momma and baby.

So, here we are. Momma moved into a room about 2:00pm on Tuesday and the doc administered cervadil (sp?) at about 6:00pm.

She started having contractions about 8:00 was pumped full of happy-medicine at 10:00. She’s resting now and that’s a good thing.

If things go as planned (HAHAHA!) then the doc will administer Pitocin at about 6:00 am and we should have a baby on Wednesday. Just one day short of 37 weeks into her pregnancy.

We have every reason to believe baby Lola will be healthy and happy and will no doubt be the light of our lives!

I’ll keep you up to date as often as I can.

We headed out to see Dr. Thompson for our next sonogram…and the one that would tell us whether we were having a boy or a girl.

Momma has thought the entire time it was a boy. I have thought it was a girl. But the fact is, that both of us are so happy to be having a baby that we truly have no preference either way.

When we arrived at the office we were taken directly to the sonogram room, where Doc showed up about two minutes later and got straight to work.

As would seem normal for our baby, he/she was not cooperating. In fact, Baby O spent the entire time “mooning” us. Which, as I quickly found out, is not the best position to determine the sex of a baby in the womb. Go figure!

Doc told us that if the baby would just open it’s legs we could get a good picture. But no such luck. Momma even offered to do a few jumping jacks to try to mix things up a bit..but the Doc told us that probably wouldn’t help.

So, after about five minutes of poking and prodding and trying to get a better angle, he finally told us he was 90% sure it was a girl. “90%!?!? We want 110% Doc!! ” Maybe in a couple of months. But for now, we’ll have to settle for 90%.

So there ya go. We’re 99% sure that we have a 90% chance of having a girl. I think that’s pretty good odds. So I went out and bought the pink “Daddy’s My Hero” shirt for Lola to wear when she gets home.

Oh yeah, Lola Elizabeth is her name. I think we’re 100% on the name. Lola was my great grandmother’s name and is also a derivative of Delores, which was Jamie’s grandmother’s name. That worked out well.

So now we’re totally overwhelmed with baby registries and shower invitations and nursery furniture.

WOW, I think this may be a lot of work!

Doctor visit #3 last week. We had to postpone this visit for a week because we took a week to go to New Mexico. We figured it was our last chance for an extended vacation for a while….like, uh…18 years! The trip was great. Momma had some challenge with the long car trip but overall she handled it wonderfully.

Ok, Doctor visit…First time to hear the heartbeat on the Doppler. Though I find it hard to trust anything they use to predict weather with! Nothing else new. We had some questions. Got the answers we expected. Momma can take allergy meds again…that’s a good thing.

Things are slowing down. Momma is feeling better but concerned about her clothes not fitting. I told her she should be worried if they did fit at this point.

She hasn’t gained any weight since the last visit (5 weeks ago) but she’s certainly beginning to look pregnant. It’s awesome!

We will find out the sex at the next visit on September 25th. Momma is getting anxious to start decorating the nursery. She went to her first Babies R Us class tonight – “What to put in your diaper bag.” I think she has a few more lined up. I’ll get to go learn how to change diapers soon! Do you think they use real babies????

Before our 3rd visit to the Doctor on 8/21/2007.

The second visit to the Doctor went very well. Just a quick checkup on how things were going. We talked a little about Momma being sick as often as she is…well, don’t tell Jamie this, but “it’s normal.” The professional opinion is that the sickness should start to subside in the next week or two. We have our fingers crossed.

We are about a week or two short of being able to hear the heartbeat on the handheld doppler (you got me, i’ll let you know what it is when I see one) so we had another sonogram.

Yeah, it was awsome. After the first one, four weeks ago, my expectations were not high.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

We saw a baby!! It really almost looked like a human. Head…check. Nose…check. Arm…check. Leg….HOLY COW! Look at that leg go! IT’S KICKING! AND NOW LOOK AT THE ARM GO!!! She must be pissed off at something

I think I briefly saw the “Hook’em Horns” on her right hand. That, or she was flipping us off for bothering her.

Oh, and the “her” thing. Momma is not happy with me calling the baby a “her”. Since if it ends up being a boy (which Momma is convinced of now) then HE will have a complex.

So, Camden, if you’re reading this about 10 or so years after I wrote it, then I’m sorry. I hope I haven’t ruined your life by referring to you as a her when you were -7 months old. I hope I’ve made it up to you by now. Call me and we’ll go to Hooters (to have some Wings!).

I think a fetus is kind of like a ship, or an old car, or a country. It’s perfectly OK to refer to it as a “she”. And so it is…

We will find out the sex at 20 weeks (10 weeks from now). So until then, this baby is a SHE.

Now, on to the exciting part (for me anyway, this is kinda like sharing vacation photos, except you can close your browser at any time and don’t have to be subjected to this).

Sonogram: Week 10

Memorable quotes from So I Married an Axe Murderer

Stuart Mackenzie: Look at the size of that boy’s heed.
Tony Giardino: Shhh!
Stuart Mackenzie: I’m not kidding, it’s like an orange on a toothpick.
Tony Giardino: Shhh, you’re going to give the boy a complex.
Stuart Mackenzie: Well, that’s a huge noggin. That’s a virtual planetoid.
Tony Giardino: Shh!
Stuart Mackenzie: Has it’s own weather system.
Tony Giardino: Sh, sh, shh.
Stuart Mackenzie: HEAD! MOVE!

(if you haven’t seen this movie, you MUST read the scene above with a HEAVY Scottish accent to get the full affect)

The next doctors appointment is at 14 weeks (Around August 14th). Not expecting any big news there, just another checkup. Nothing major until we find out the sex at 20 weeks.

Sorry about the delay in posting. Nothing much new lately. Momma is still struggling with “morning” sickness and trying to find something she can eat consistently, besides bread.

I have been overwhelmed by all of the information available on the web about pregnancy, and dealing with a pregnant wife. I keep joking that I will write a book for expecting Dad’s when we get through this. But every day I realize more that there are no answers. Things change every day and, even with as much information that is available, there are no answers. There is no cure for morning sickness. There is no way to tell what mood “Mom” is going to be in today. And there are just times when there is nothing I can do to make her feel better. And that’s frustrating to a type A control-freak like me.

I just thank the good Lord each and every day that both Jamie and I are fortunate enough to be able to work from home. I can’t imagine what it would be like if I were gone every day, or if she had to go into an office. We are definitely blessed and are reminded of that every day.

Our next doctors appointment is next week…July 17th. I’m not sure what happens at that visit, but I assume we’ll have new pictures.

Here is our current status:

Week 10: Make Bones About It

Your baby’s nearly an inch and a half long and the size of a prune, but not nearly as shriveled. In fact, your baby is really taking a human shape now. Though your baby’s arms are taking shape, each one is only about the size of this number 1.

Your baby’s growth is fast and furious now. He or she is nearly an inch and a half long and the size of a prune, but not nearly as shriveled (even with all the time it spends in water). In fact, your baby is really taking a human shape now. Bones and cartilage are forming, and small indentations on the legs are developing into knees and ankles. The arms (complete with elbows) can flex already, but don’t run to the store for a baseball bat just yet. Though your baby’s arms are taking shape and getting stronger, each one is only about the size of this number 1.

The tooth bud fairy is making her appearance this week, heralding the arrival of your baby’s little choppers, which are forming under the gums. (Those pearly whites won’t break through the gums until your baby is close to six months old). Other systems are go, too. Your baby’s stomach is producing digestive juices, the kidneys are producing larger quantities of urine, and, if your baby’s a boy, he’s already producing testosterone (yikes!).

I was downtown in meetings most of the day but when I got home at 4 she wanted to go swimming. And then we had our first real meal together in almost two weeks. Fingers are crossed for another good night tonight.
