We celebrated Mikeila's 2nd birthday but decided not to throw a party same as last year but instead just have a small gathering at home and visited SM Mall of Asia the day after her birthday. Where else could you go to MOA where toddlers can have fun and learn at the same time? At Nido Science Discovery Center and Robot Zoo of course!

Entrance to both Science Discovery Center and Robot Zoo is P500 per head. Children below 2 feet will enjoy the facilities for free.

Ticket already includes 1 Planetarium show which features a 40-minute science movie shown in a dome theater, way better than IMAX. If you have a toddler, better catch the show One World, One Sky (showing at 1:20pm, 4:40pm and 7:20pm). It stars sesame street characters like Elmo and Big Bird. Your kids will enjoy it for sure.

The Robot Zoo features giant robot animals which teaches you how animals move. These are great especially for picture taking though I hope they have more exhibits to showcase inside. It kinda feels "bitin".

Over all, a visit at Nido Science Discovery Center and Robot Zoo is a great bonding experience for your family. Be sure to check it out when you plan to drop by Mall of Asia.

Seafood Pasta in Oil

Thanks to Wanda Cooks for this recipe. So simple but delicious. I made this for Mikeila's 2nd birthday and they loved it. :)

Ingredients:
1kg spaghettini or angel's hair (cooked per package instructions)
seafood (shrimp, squid and canned tuna, drained but reserving the oil)
1/2 cup olive oil
2 whole garlic (or more), minced finely
1 tbsp red chili flakes, minced finely
1 cup dried basil
1 cup dried parsley
salt and pepper to taste

How to Cook:

Warm oil, garlic and red chili flakes in a skillet. Cover and let simmer in low heat for 15 minutes. The oil should barely bubble and make sure the garlic will NOT turn brown.
Add shrimp and squid and cook in medium-high heat. Add the canned tuna a few minutes after.
Once cooked, add the basil, parsley and the oil from the canned tuna. Then add salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for a few minutes
Pour over pasta and serve.

Kids today have been very lucky to have various types of learning devices and activities available to them. My two year old Mikeila loves to play with my smartphone and already knows how to navigate it. I saw this as an opportunity to teach her so I downloaded several (FREE) baby-friendly, educational or fun apps for her.

Here are the list of apps she loves (in no particular order):

Kid Songs 1 & 2 - This is a compilation of children's songs coupled with moving flash graphics that your baby can sing along to. Mikeila developed a love for music and she already knows how to sing along with the songs like Clap Your Hands, Bingo, London Bridge, Alphabet Song, Happy Birthday, Finger Family among others.

Sing Sing Together - Also a compilation of children's songs but each song has a dance move that your kid will enjoy doing.

Smart books - Smart books have several apps available for download but what we love are Kids Stories, Kids Songs (this is different from the first one mentioned above), Skidamarink and London Bridge)

Pango Book - an interactive story book featuring Pango and his friends. Mikeila and her cousin Alexa loves giving Pango a bath, blowing and popping balloon and apple picking with Pango

Ant and Grasshopper (CluePoint Co, Ltd.) - another interactive book where your baby will help the ant from gathering food for the winter. You have the option to read the story yourself or let the recorded story teller read it for you.

The Truth About Your Baby Powder

When I went to the Mompreneur Summit to pick-up the products I ordered at Tiny Buds, I got intrigued with the display at their booth. They showed Tiny Buds Baby Rice Powder poured on top of a glass with water. What amazes me is that the powder do not mix with the water at all. It really does repel water!

So I did the same experiment at home not only with Tiny Buds but also using another famous baby powder brand. Just to check if both repels water just the same. The first video uses another baby powder brand while the second one uses Tiny Buds Baby Rice Powder. Here's what I found out:

The one on the right side of the picture uses another famous powder brand. As soon as I pour the powder on top of the water, a lot of the grains were absorbed immediately. You can see that the water was not clear and some of the powder residue were at the bottom of the glass.

Amazingly, Tiny Buds Baby Rice Powder remained on top of the water! You can see on the left side of the picture that the water is still clear and no powder were absorbed.

I can safely assume that Tiny Buds Baby Rice Powder is better to protect your kids from sweat as it repels water really well. Add to that the fact that it does not contain talc harmful to your kids lungs. I'm really glad I found this product.

Mikeila's Trip at the Dentist

I wanted to share what I learned from Mikeila's dentist yesterday. We went to the Pediatric Dentistry Center of the Philippines along Banawe Ave to have her teeth checked. Mikeila unfortunately was diagnosed with tooth decay on several of her teeth. This maybe the reason why she has poor appetite lately. It can also leave to swelling and infections when left untreated.

We were given 2 options by Dra. Lopez. To take the teeth out and wait for the permanent teeth to come in or to treat the pulp of her teeth and hold on to it as much as we could. This treatment is called pulpotomy or root canal for kids.

We have to weigh the pros and cons of the two options before deciding:

Baby teeth holds the space for the permanent teeth so taking the tooth out especially the molar can cause crowding once the permanent teeth comes in.
Baby teeth will be replaced starting age 7 to 11. Mikeila is only 2. Those years without teeth may affect the kid's self esteem once she goes to school.
On the other hand, having a pulp treatment can save her teeth for many years but she needs to be sedated in order that she would not feel the pain of the operation. The dentist said that this is completely safe but we still have our apprehensions because the baby will feel nauseated and groggy the whole day of the operation.

After discussing with hubby Raffy, we decided to take the pulp treatment since saving her teeth is more important to us. The doctor reminded us that even after the treatment, it is still important to change our routine so as to prevent the damage from coming back.

Here are the tips our dentist taught us to prevent tooth decay from coming back.

Always brush your kid's teeth before going to bed using a toothpaste with 1,000ppm of flouride. Colgate and Floucaril are the brands we use. Do not gargle with water so that the teeth will be left protected with flouride.
Make sure not to give them milk after brushing. Now this is where our mistake is. We always brush Mikeila's teeth, but we can't resist to give her milk if she asks for it. The milk residue will stay at their teeth the whole night thus causing tooth decay. What we do now is we give her milk before brushing so that she won't ask for it after
If she eats cookies, candies as snacks, make sure to give her lots of water after in order to wash out the sugar from this treats.
Always visit your trusted pedia dentist regularly to have your kid's teeth checked. You may start when she reached one year old. You may check out Dra. Fina Lopez of the Pediatric Dentistry Center of the Philippines (see contact details below). She's so nice and was able to explain everything to us.

There you go. Hope these tips will help you prevent your kids from having tooth decay and not suffer what Mikeila's undergoing right now. I hope her treatment will run smoothly and we'll have her teeth healthy again. Will let you know her progress soon.

Tiny Buds Rice Baby Powder

My husband's family has a history of asthma so I am very careful with the products I use for Mikeila. I did not put powder on her until she turned one but I apply only at her back, armpit and a little at her chest. As I was having my usual grocery, I came across Tiny Buds Rice Baby Powder. It is made from 100% real rice grain and absolutely talc-free! This is just what Mikeila needed.

My baby's been using it for a couple of months now and we both love it. The fragrance is just right and since it is made of rice grains, it repels water which allows sweat to evaporate naturally keeping the child's skin fresh and dry from perspiration. It is also biodegradable and hypoallergenic.

How Do You Discipline Your Baby?

If there's one thing parents are always concern about, it is how you discipline and raise a well-behaved child. Before I became a mom, I promised myself that I will raise my future kids without resorting to physical punishment but still be able to instill discipline to them. This is because I don't want them to believe that it's alright to hurt other people just because they did something wrong or something you don't like.

Now that I have a baby, it is easier said than done. Though my child is sweet, jolly and friendly, there are times when she throws tantrums or shouts at you, at lola or her yaya. I try to explain to her that she should not do such things, but with her age, I think she doesn't understand it yet. I am sometimes tempted to spank her but I manage to control myself.

But even if I'm not getting positive results right now, I wouldn't stop communicating with my baby until she understands right from wrong. I will continue to be a good example for her as consistency is key. I will continue NOT to use physical punishment when she commits a mistake. And I know in my heart, we will both reap the rewards in the future.

Why Mommy Loves Barney

While I was having lunch with a friend the other week (who's a father of an 8-month old baby girl), I told him how my baby Mikeila adores the show Barney. He immediately asked if Barney is recommended for babies because of rumors he heard way back criticizing the purple dinosaur's 'sexuality'. This is the reason why he never have his baby watched it.

I've heard this rumor too when I was still single (I think same rumor surfaced about Spongebob). Personally, I think Barney is one of the BEST kids show that ever created. Here's why:

The show teaches good manners like sharing, being loving, being polite, being fair with your friends and even the proper way of sneezing hehe!
They teach children how to count, learn ABCs and identify shapes and colors
It also teaches kids practical stuffs like how to cross the street (always stop look and listen, hold hands with a grown up, etc), rules when playing balls outside (always ask a grown up friend to get the ball if ever it goes out on the street, etc)
Best of all, they teach all of that thru a language kids would easily understand - with MUSIC!

I'm actually grateful for this show because Mikeila have gained an interest in singing. At her tender age, she was able to sing along with her favorite Barney tunes complete with dance moves. She comes rushing to hug and kiss me or her daddy whenever she hears the "I Love You" Song play on TV. She already knows how to count from 1 to 10 and sing the ABC song although I'm sure she doesn't understand it yet. She's been watching Barney since she's 3 months old although she have discovered and loved other characters now like Tinkerbell or Barbie, she never grew tired of Barney, Baby Bop, BJ and Riff but I'm not complaining.

It is the biggest investing conference in the country where various finance experts teach Filipinos on how to be successful on various investment mediums like stocks, real estate, forex, etc. I really wanted to come but my schedule won't let me. :(

Anyways, the organizers of the summit released a shocking and sad facts about Filipinos' Investing Habits. Here are some of it:

Pay Yourself First

We always hear an advice saying that we should save at least 20% of our salary before we pay for our expenses and I absolutely agree. But where do we put this 20%? Do we just leave it at the bank? Piggy banks, anyone?

In the book “Wealth Within Your Reach” by Francisco Colayco, he explained what we should do with the 20%. According to him, this should be allocated among 3 funds namely emergency fund, insurance and investment.

Emergency Fund – Half of the 20% must go to your emergency fund. As the name implies, this should be used in case of emergency only (i.e., losing your job). You should save an equivalent of at least 6 months worth of your monthly expenses because it is assumed that that’s how long you can recover from an emergency (e.g. finding a new job).
Insurance – This is an item we Filipinos normally pay no attention to. But personally, I believe that if you are generating an income and your family is relying on it, then it is vital to protect yourself by getting an insurance. We don’t want our loved ones to carry the financial burden when something unexpected happens to us. According to some financial advisers, the amount of insurance coverage must be at least 2-3 years worth of your annual income.
Investment - After allotting for emergency fund and insurance, the balance should be invested. Always remember to invest your money where you can earn higher than inflation which is about 5%, otherwise your income will just get eaten by it. You might wonder, the balance will probably be just a small amount, where in the world can I invest it and get good returns? I always suggest to invest your money in mutual funds. I thank God for the person who invented it. :) Mutual funds lets you invest in stocks or bonds with at least P1k (but initial investment must be P5k). Professional fund managers pool all investments and place it in blue chip or good performing companies and generate good returns, around 10% at the lowest. I'll discuss more about mutual funds in my succeeding posts.

Those are the things that I religiously do every payday. It will be challenging at first. But my goal to be able to provide college education for my kids in the future and retire with enough funds keep me fueled to pay myself first every single day.

CHILI GARLIC POTATOES

Ingredients:

1/2 kg baby potatoes
1/4 cup butter
3tbsp olive oil
6-8 cloves of garlic, diced
4pcs jalapeno chilis, cut in to rings
3tsps balsamic vinegar
salt to taste

How to Cook:

Wash the baby potatoes very carefully. Boil potatoes in their jackets until tender then cut it in half. Be careful not to overcook so that it won't break when we stir fry it later.
Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet. It's important to have both in order to achieve a nice golden-brown crust.
Saute garlic and chilis until the garlic turns brown. Add the potatoes. Cook until the potatoes have a golden brown color.
Add the balsamic vinegar and salt.

This goes well with pasta or porkchop or roasted chicken. Enjoy!

Saving and Investing For Your Future

No matter how young are, it is important to start early and save for your future. Much more if we already have a family. We must remember that our body ages and get weak, hence our capacity to work decreases as we grow old that's why it is critical to save while we still have the means. We don't want to depend on our children for money when we retire, aren't we?

That's why it is such a blessing when I stumbled upon Francisco Colayco's best selling book "Wealth Within Your Reach" in early 2011. This book is full of insights that you can use and you will definitely relate to it because it is designed in Philippine settings. It is aimed to teach that all Filipinos regardless of their status have the capacity to invest and become financially independent. It taught me that i can save, invest and grow my money for only P1,000 thru the concept of mutual fund. I also learned that aside from investment, it is also important to provide for 2 other funds for specific purposes namely emergency fund and insurance and how you can build these 3 funds simultaneously. I wish I was able to discover this book earlier so that I could've started when I was much younger.

This book is an eye opener. I'll share with you some of the tips I learned in my succeeding posts so you too can start the habit. Hope this book will be an eye opener to you as it was for me.

Bell Pepper Pizza

Ingredients:
- 8pcs medium sized bell pepper cut in half
- 1pack bacon chopped
- 1can mushroom chopped
- Onion chopped
- 4oz cream cheese softened
- Mozarella grated

How to cook:

Saute onion, bacon and mushroom until cooked. Add a few salt
Transfer to a bowl and let cool
Mix cream cheese and 1/3 of mozarella. Blend well.
Stuffed mixture inside bell pepper
Put remaining mozzarella cheese on top
Bake for 15mins in 350 degrees until cheese is melted

You may also use pizza crust instead of bell peppers as it base. Just put some pizza sauce before placing the bacon mixture and add chopped bell peppers on top.

Playtime at Gymboree

We went to Gymboree Edsa Shang to redeem our deal grocer voucher and enroll Mikeila in their Play & Learn Class and Music Class. She will start next week, so excited!

But first, we let her play at their play area and she had lots of fun!

If you're planning to bring your kids there to play, you must remember a few simple rules:

Only children below 5 years old are allowed to play
Adults accompanying the kids inside the play area must remove their shoes and wear socks
Children must be bare foot
Always stay with your child within a hug's reach

Don't worry if you forgot to bring a pair of socks. Gymboree sells these at P40/pair.

Let your kid's imagination run wild and have fun!

Chicken and Tuna Pesto Pasta

I love to cook on my spare time. Here's a simple pasta recipe that you can whip up for merienda or parties.

Chicken & Tuna Pesto Pasta

Ingredients:
500g fusilli pasta (cooked as directed)
3 cans tuna flakes (i like to combine two variants - in vegetable oil and hot & spicy)
1 small pouch Clara Ole Cheesy Pesto Sauce
1/4kg boneless chicken cut into cubes
Olive oil or butter
garlic
garlic powder
pepper
Maggi magic sarap

How to cook:

Marinate chicken cubes in pepper, garlic powder and magic sarap for 15-20mins
In a skillet, saute garlic and chicken until brown. Mix in the tuna but drain and reserve the oil. Add some pepper
After several minutes, put the pesto sauce and the rest of the oil from the canned tuna.
Salt to taste. Let it simmer for 10 minutes.
Pour the pasta and serve while hot

Oreo Truffles

I whipped up something new in the kitchen today. I was looking for a no-bake dessert that can also be served on parties since Mikeila's 2nd b-day is in a few months. Here's the recipe for Oreo Truffles (also called Oreo Balls)

Ingredients:
30pcs Oreo Cookies
8oz cream cheese, softened (for this recipe, I used Philadelphia cream cheese 1/3 less fat)
360g white chocolate chips used for baking

How to cook:

Crush the Oreos real good until you get a powdery consistency. You may do so by putting it in a blender or by placing it in a ziplock bag and manually crushing it with a baking pin.
Transfer to a bowl and put the softened cream cheese. Blend well with the Oreos until smooth. Refrigerate for 30mins.
While waiting, melt the white chocolate chips using a double boiler method or microwave. For the former, get a saucepan and fill a quarter of it with water. Simmer in low heat. When the water gets hot (not boiling), place another bowl on top of the saucepan uncovered. Make sure that the bowl is dry and that it does not touch the water below it. Put the chocolate chips and stir occasionally until chocolate is melted. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Take out the Oreo mixture from the fridge and form little balls the size of a lollipop. Dip each ball in the melted chocolate making sure that it is completely covered. Place the balls in a baking tray lined with baking sheet. Put a cocktail pick in each ball so that it will be easy and fun to eat
Refrigerate and let it set.

My husband loved this. Try this and it will surely be a hit especially to those with sweet tooth!

I've always wanted to enroll Mikeila in playschool. I believe it will help her greatly in developing her social and intellectual skills. Being a toddler means that her attention span is still short and so learning while playing is a great way to teach her.

Good thing I found this amazing deal from Deal Grocer, a private member-only group buying site offering great deals on just about anything. This week, in celebration of Gymboree's 10th year anniversary in the Philippines, they are offering a 55% off on Gymboree's Annual Membership with 10 GymPlay coupons & 10 classes of your choice. These usually costs P11,150 but you will only have to pay P4,995! SWEET! Plus the 10 classes have unlimited GymPlay sessions! I'm just wondering why Serendra and GB5 are not participating? Too bad. It's closer to where we're from but nevertheless I'm happy their branch at Shangri-la is included as it's still close to Makati. Working Mom's Dilemma

During our parents' early days, it is typical that a family lives on one source of income alone. Usually, the father works for the family while the mom stays at home to take care of the children. But times have changed and it's becoming more and more difficult to make ends meet. Add to that the desire of women to become someone in the society other than staying at home. So moms nowadays work 5 or 6 days a week to augment their family income in the hopes of providing a better future for their children.

And I'm one of those moms. I enjoy being able to help provide for my baby but I'm faced with the dilemma that almost all working moms I think are encountering. Can my salary compensate to the times lost when I'm not at home taking care of Mikeila? Is it worth leaving your baby behind for 8-10 hours a day and only being able to spend quality time with them during weekends?

I don't have my final answers yet but to tell you the truth, I've been so close in giving up my work to become a full time mom & housewife. I feel that my baby needs me more than she needs my salary. She's only 10 months and this is a critical stage where majority of the behavior, attitude and brain development are forming. And I believe that I am the best teacher for that.

But on the other side of the fence, I need to consider a lot of things first. Can we still be financially stable if we live through one income alone? Can we provide a good financial future for Mikeila if I quit my job?

As you can see, more questions are popping up in every scenario which makes it more difficult. We have to weigh all the pros and cons and the benefits should outweigh the risks. I haven't made my decision yet, but if ever I did, I hope it is the correct one.
