I believe this to be from Rolf's, and dates to about the mid 50s. There is the faint remnant of a maker's mark on the inside. I'm fairly certain it is Rolf's. I can't be 100% sure, as it's very worn. However, the quality & style of this are consistent with Rolf's bags, and the script "R" looks like that of the Rolf's logotype of the 40s & 50s. Note that the red of this bag is very rich and deeper than the photos show; I've given you one shot color corrected as best I can. My old didn't capture reds well. I'll try to shoot this again with my new camera so you can see its true color! In any event, this sweet little bag has hinged styling with a wide frame (hinged at bottom) and inner side pleats of fabric. Lined in gorgeous red satin, with a small double pocket for the mirror (clouded at center, but no cracks, chips, etc). Change purse is in excellent condition. This is a top-quality leather, still soft & supple after all these years. Well loved, but well cared for, it shows edge & corner wear, and wear around some of the leather piping trim. Handles show some wear, but are solid, with no structural issues. This bag is in terrific condition for its age and level of use. It has many, many years of enjoyment left for you. There is nothing that detracts from its appearance when it's being carried. From a household liquidation sale of an elderly lady who had great taste and a pocketbook to match! The front of the setting appears to have a gold "wash" of color on the ribbed area (not an overlay). The design & color of this setting makes it sparkle in the light, like a diamond-cut setting would. Setting measures approx. 1" top to bottom, and not quite 3/4" across widest point. Condition: Excellent; front of setting looks about perfect; some finish wear on backs. Also a great "secretary" dress for work. This is from the estate of Hollywood designer Irene Saltern. Ms. Saltern was a film costume designer in the 40s (the favorite designer of dancer Ann Miller and actress Martha Scott). Her sketches are preserved at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and her apparel is featured at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Los Angeles County Museum. She started designing commercial clothing in the late 40s, and was head designer for Tabak, Phil Rose, and others, including her own label. Ms. Saltern is widely credited for pioneering the separates look that built the California sportswear industry! I purchased a large collection from her estate and will be offering 50s, 60s, and 70s vintage items from it. Many pieces are unworn or were runway samples, some are from her personal wardrobe, some are spec or sample pieces, etc. All are constructed with quality, of the finest fabrics and workmanship. Ms. Saltern was meticulous in her selection of fabrics, matching & coordinating colors, etc. This turquoise-blue dress is of finest-quality mid-to-heavy weight fabric that I believe is a linen/silk blend. It has a softer hand and a finer weave than a heavily slubbed linen, drapes nicely, and isn't prone to wrinkling like 100% linen is. The placket-style trim down the front is edged in satin, and the soft silk scarf attaches by a thread anchor at the back neck. Slip it thru the wide "loop" at the neckline to get the effect of a bow without the fussing. You can detach the scarf if you don't want to wear it every time. Dress features shapely darting detail at bodice; curved, fitted front waistline; softly gathered back waistline for a non-gaping fit; and slim-fit skirt. Its self-fabric belt is lined in soft leather. Back nylon zipper (Ms. Saltern used nylon zippers as early as the 50s, when they first appeared in commercial design). Size: Labeled size 10, appears to be about a modern 8. Cut a little more generously than expected in vintage, but better clothing often was. Lorena takes a 4 to 6, and this was large on her. Approx. garment measurements below (leave room for your body): * Bust: 38", including the ease thru the dart area * Waist: 26 1/2", seamed & fitted * Hip: 37" plus a hair (even though this is meant to fit snugly, you don't want to stretch the hip out too awfully much. There's ample seam allowance for letting the side seams out if needed.) Length: Approx. 36 1/2" down center back (14 1/2" from neck to waist at back) * Taken flat on front & doubled. I do NOT stretch garments out when I measure them, unless otherwise stated. I do flatten them out as much as possible. I don't use stretched dimensions, because if the item is too small for you, you'll be unhappy! I suggest you measure a similarly styled dress you already own in the same manner to check for fit. Fabric: Linen/silk blend, to the best of my ability to determine Condition: Mint, NOS without tag; likely tailored for the designer herself, but then apparently unworn. One small area of light discoloration on the underside of the silk scarf, at the back. Doesn't show when worn.
