One bone of contention in relation to the Apple ID’s from many consumers since the release of iCloud is that you can’t merge your Apple ID’s. Those who had signed up to Apple’s old cloud service MobileMe (which was also formerly .Mac and iTools) were under a prerequisite to create a @me.com email address to use the service and so began the fallout when Apple introduced the App Store. No longer were you required to use an Apple domain as an email address and many over the years have been asking Apple to allow them to merge their Apple ID with their old Mac Domain ID, but sadly it’s been falling on deaf ears.

When it comes to merging your ID’s you need to look at what they’re used for. Primarily the iCloud ID you have (unless you’re fairly new to Apple) has been used to store documents and information while your App Store ID is traditionally used for purchases. So really instead of merging the 2 x Apple ID’s you have, it’s all about transferring information from one to the other.

With your iCloud Account you need to look at what it is you have stored there, and what’s most important to you. iCloud syncs the following automatically from your devices:

– Mail (if you’re using an Apple domain as your main mail account. Otherwise if you’re using Gmail, POP3, IMAP, Exchange or other mail providers you don’t need this option)
– Contacts
– Calendars
– Reminders
– Safari Bookmarks
– Notes
– Passbook
– Photos (in particular Photostream)
– Documents (which are Keynote, Numbers and Pages)
– Backups of your iPhone

If you’re looking to merge your Apple ID’s the simple truth is, you can’t. However, here’s the lowdown on how you can get all your important information and transfer it over to just a single Apple ID.

Choosing Which Apple ID To Keep.

The one you’ll most likely want to keep is the one you use for all of your App Store Purchases and iMessages, that is unless you want to go and purchase all of your Apps again and pay for them twice as well as downloading them all over again (it’s a no-brainer really). Every Apple ID now has access to iCloud as standard with storage data for free. You also have the option to increase this to 50GB for €0.99 per month, 200GB for €2.99 per month, 1TB for €9.99 per month and 2TB for €19.99 per month if you want, depending on your needs. To check out how much you’re currently using with iCloud go to “Settings” > “iCloud” > “Storage” and you’ll see exactly what is used out of your current allowance.

Getting Your Documents From iCloud

When it comes down to this, it all depends on what information you have stored in iCloud. If like me you have bundles of presentations, word / pages documents and spreadsheets these are easily downloadable. Since Apple introduced iCloud Drive this has now expanded to include multiple file extensions outside the Apple ecosystem.

Start off by creating a folder on your desktop (e.g. iCloud backup). Within that folder, create a number of sub folders for each of the items you’re going to download (e.g. Contacts, Keynote, Numbers etc).

To get your documents, just login into iCloud and select where you have your documents stored. Select all of your documents in either Pages, Numbers or Keynote – then right click and download them into the separate folders you’ve created on your desktop.

The great feature with Pages, Numbers and Keynote in iCloud is that you can fully edit all of your documents in your browser whether they’re from a PC or Mac. Once you’ve downloaded all of your documents from your old Apple ID, all you have to do is drag and drop them into iCloud with your new Apple ID and then you’re done. You’ve now transferred your documents from one Apple ID to the other.

Migrating Your Contacts

iCloud automatically syncs your contacts from your devices but it would be easy to forget how we managed our contacts before the introduction of it – with iTunes or if you’re on a Mac with the “Contacts” app. Migrating your contacts is quite easy and painless.

Whether you’re on a PC or Mac you’ll be using iCloud to export the information.

Login to iCloud with your old Apple ID and select “Contacts”. Select them all (CMD+A if using a Mac) and in the bottom left hand corner, click the cog. Then select “Export Contacts” and save them to your desktop folder. They will now be ready to import into iCloud with your new Apple ID using the same method – Just select “Import Contacts”

Migrating Your Photos

iCloud uses your Apple ID to share your photos in Photo-stream and Shared Albums, but you also have the originals on your devices (unless you’ve deleted them. All you need to do is make sure you have a backup of those photos on your desktop or iTunes, as they won’t be there when you connect with your new Apple ID.

Notes

Unfortunately, you’re not able to download your notes to an importable file. iCloud used to allow you to email all of your notes to one of your email addresses, however that feature seems to now be removed. So..looks like you’ll have to do it the hard way.

Calendars

Depending on what you’re using, PC or Mac and which software you’re using for your calendars – most have the ability to Export all the information to your desktop as a file. If you’re using exchange, it won’t matter as the login you’re using isn’t associated with your Apple ID. If however you’re using your Apple ID as your default calendar, go to your calendar software and somewhere within “File” you should have the ability to export it to your desktop which will also allow you to import it when you setup your new Apple ID as the default.

iMessage

This is probably the one you’ll treasure most as you don’t want to lose all of those messages you have stored in your phone by switching to another Apple ID. The great thing about iMessage is that it can store multiple email addresses to be used from iMessage when you’re sending or receiving. To add your new Apple ID (if it’s not already being used as your default), do the following. “Settings” > “Messages” > “Send & Receive” > “Apple ID” > Sign out of your old Apple ID and enter in your new Apple ID > then “Add Another Email” which is your new Apple ID and you’re good to go. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any messages in switching over your Apple ID’s

Safari Bookmarks

One of the great things about Safari, is that any bookmark you have on one device automatically shows up on all your other devices using the same Apple ID. You’ve probably spent a good bit of time collecting these and putting them back in manually could be a bit of a pain. In order to do it easily simply go to “File” > “Export Bookmarks” and it will save as a HTML file on your desktop, ready for you to import it with the new Apple ID.

When you’ve set up your new Apple ID, just go to “File” > “Import Bookmarks” and select the file you want. You’ll want to do this on your computer first, so that your iOS devices can take the information from it when you log into them with your new Apple ID.

Your iOS Backups

Now this is the important one. Before you do any of the above, make sure that you backup your phone to iTunes first to ensure that you have a localised backup on your computer.

When you log in with your new Apple ID on your iOS devices, you’ll have the option to decide what you want going to iCloud and what you want staying local. To select these options, go to “Settings” > “iCloud” > “Log In With New Apple ID” > scroll to bottom > “Storage & Backup” > select “iCloud Backup”.

You iOS device is now backing up all of your information to your iCloud profile with your new Apple ID and you’re done. You’ve now moved all of your important information over to your new Apple ID and reduced the hassle of having multiple ID’s.

Hopefully this was some use (until Apple finally allows merging of Apple ID’s).

There’s no doubt we love our superheroes. In the cinematic universe, they’re portrayed by some of Hollywood’s Hottest A-listers. But could you imagine if our favourite marvel heroes were played by dogs…..

Captain America: The super soldier would be played by a Golden Retriever. Like Cap, they’re a large-sized breed. This breed of dog is active and fit, Cap is active and fit. They both have similar appearances: large, athletic and natural looking. They were given the name ‘’retriever’’ because of the capacity to retrieve shot game undamaged. Cap has this in a different way. He always make sure to retrieve his vibranium shield wherever he goes.

Iron Man: The genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist would be played by a Chihuahua. Like a Chihuahua, Tony Stark is comical, entertaining (that guy knows how to throw a party) and brimming with personality – usually an eccentric, quirky one that’s not matched by anyone else. Like Chihuahuas, Stark is suspicious by nature. He likes to know everything that’s going on around him and very often uses his genius inventions to get the information he needs.

Hulk: The green guy would be played by a Pitbull Terrier. Like his furry companion, Hulk is large, muscular and powerful. Similar to a Pitbull Terrier, Hulk is a strong willed character, who doesn’t hold back ‘going green’ when he desperately needs to.

Black Widow: Natasha Romanoff, martial artist and secret agent, would be played by a Yorkshire terrier. Like a Yorkie, she may be small but she can pack a punch and kick ass among some of the toughest guys in the galaxy. They’re both incredibly smart, quick (both physically and mentally), courageous and try to attack beings that are ten times their size.

Thor: The God of Thunder would be played by a Siberian husky. Both are hard to resist, with their joyful demeanour, friendliness, striking appearance and incredibly beautiful smile. Like his furry companion, Thor is large, muscular and powerful but he’s also gentle, and good-natured.

Here we take a look at some of the most inspiring movie characters.

Carl Fredericksen – Up!

Carl Fredericksen, the lovable 78-year-old widower from Disney Pixar’s Up, is the perfect inspiration when it comes to following your dreams.

Carl and his late wife, Ellie, had always dreamt of going to Paradise Falls in South America but unfortunately, life incidents kept getting in the way. When Ellie dies, his world crumbles. After accidently injuring a construction worker over damage to his mailbox, a court orders him to move to a retirement home. This is the fuel he needs to come up with a scheme to keep his promise to Ellie. He turns his house into a makeshift airship using thousands of helium balloons and sets off for Paradise Falls.

Carl shows that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. He lost his wife but instead of being miserable for the rest of his days, he put together a plan to accomplish the one thing they both wanted in life. He shows us how to cope with a negative life situation, by making it a positive.

Elle Woods – Legally Blonde

She’s a blonde, pink loving girly girl with a pet Chihuahua named Bruiser. She is also a Harvard Law student.

After being dumped by boyfriend Warner for not being smart enough, she decides to prove him wrong and sets her sights on getting into Harvard. While Warner got into Harvard because of his family connections, she made it completely on her own. She was constantly judged because of her looks but she rose to the top of the ranks, despite everyone’s doubts. She was determined to achieve her goals, no matter how difficult they seemed.

Elle shows that we can achieve anything we want if we’re determined and work hard. She teaches us to ignore what others say and not let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish your dreams. She proves that nothing is impossible.

Rocky Balboa – The Rocky film series

Rocky is one of the most inspiring male characters from movies. He starts off as a modest and good natured boxer of Italian origin. He wasn’t rated as a big boxing star but he is a man incapable of ever quitting, no matter how high the odds that life throws his way.

Rocky teaches us about never giving up, no matter how many hits you have to take. Sometimes in life, you will fail, people will criticise and complain, but like Rocky, you need to brush it off and keep going.

Agent Carter – Captain America

Peggy ‘Agent’ Carter is an inspiration to all women. She’s Captain America’s friend and love interest but she’s also a bad ass secret agent working her way towards success in a time when men had all the power. Living in the 1940s, she gained a position of power in the army, helped advise the super soldier Steve Rogers and helped form SHIELD (before it was infiltrated by HYDRA).

Peggy shows women that they can have the power. She achieved so much in a time when there was a lot of discrimination against women. She inspires us to kick ass, no matter how tough the times are.

Black Widow – The Avengers

Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow is a world class athlete, gymnast, expert martial artist, and weapons specialist with extensive espionage training. She’s beautiful, and has a gifted intellect.

She proves the whole of idea of ‘not just a pretty face’’. She is one of the best fighters, in a group with the likes of Thor and Hulk. She has a dark background which features an orphanage, brainwashing and false memories.

Black Widow shows that brains and beauty do exist. She also shows that it’s possible to go against what you were ‘programmed’ for. She was trained to be an assassin but turned herself around and decided to fight the bad guys side by side with the Avengers.

Films are great, not only are they enjoyable but they also teach very important life lessons. I gaze at the shelf of Disney videos that I have accumulated over the years and think about all the important life lessons I have learned. These films may seem like straight forward animations but the messages they contain are actually quite complex.

Here are some of the best ‘kids’ films that contain important life lessons.

Big Hero 6: Big Hero 6 teaches us about grief.

This film centres on the life of Hiro Hamada, a young robotics prodigy who wants to build robots for illegal robotic fights. His older brother, Tadashi, manages to steer Hiro towards using his talents for good by introducing him to his university, the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT). Here, Hiro meets all Tadashi’s friends and Tadashi’s robot creation, Baymax, a robot designed to diagnose and cure the sick. After seeing all the university has to offer, Hiro decides to apply to SFIT himself.

However, when Tadashi sadly dies, having already lost both his parents, Hiro is consumed by incredible grief. In the space of a scene, he goes from an excited fourteen-year-old to a boy who barely speaks or eats.

This film draws attention to the reality of grief. Although it’s not a physical pain, it’s equally as real. Baymax’s interactions with Hiro teach us a positive way to deal with grief: in the comfort of those around us who are willing to help.

Pocahontas: Pocahontas teaches us about true love.

This is an animated tale of the romance between a young American Indian woman, Pocahontas and Captain John Smith, who journeyed to the New World with other settlers to begin fresh lives. Her father disapproves of their relationship and wants her to marry a native warrior.

Fighting for her right to love the man she desired, Pocahontas shows us that true love is colour blind and without prejudice. She shows that we need to be open to different cultures and embrace change. When Pocahontas saves John Smith from her father, her selfless act proved that love transcends all race, religious and family backgrounds. It teaches us to listen to our hearts and to stand up for what we believe in.

Beauty and the Beast: Beauty and the Beast teaches us that inner beauty is much greater than outer beauty.

Beauty and the Beast is the tale of Belle, a young girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small French town and seeks excitement. She is ridiculed by everyone in the village except her father Maurice, the town bookseller and hunter, Gaston. He is determined to marry Belle, she repeatedly rejects his advances.

The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell by an enchantress, disguised as an old beggar, who offered him a rose in exchange for shelter in his castle from the cold. He refused. For his arrogance, she transformed him into a beast and placed a spell on the castle. To break the spell, the prince must learn to love another and earn her love in return.

A wrong turn by Maurice, causes the two to meet.

The tale of Beauty and the Beast teaches us that true beauty comes from within. The Beast looks intimidating and scary but once Belle takes the time to get to know him, it’s clear he’s really kind and gentle. He just needed someone to give him a chance to show it. It proves that the old saying ‘’never judge a book by its cover’’ couldn’t be more true. The two fall in love and the spell is broken.

Up: Up teaches us to follow our dreams, regardless of our age.

Up is about Carl Fredericksen, a 78-year-old widower, who decides to finally take off and pursue an adventure that he and his late wife, Ellie, had always talked about.

Carl and Ellie had both, from a young age, idolized the explorer Charles Muntz and always had this dream of moving to Paradise Falls in South America. However, they never seemed to be able to make it happen.

Ellie ends up dying. Carl stills live in the house they shared together but when he accidently injures a construction worker over damage to his mailbox, a court orders him to move to a retirement home.

He then decided to make his and Ellie’s Paradise Falls dream a reality. This act is the message of the movie: don’t ever give up on your dreams because it’s never ever too late. If you want to do something, do it.

Tangled: Tangled teaches us to take risks.

The missing princess Rapunzel, crowned with 70 feet of magic golden hair, has been locked away for years and desperately wants freedom. When the kingdom’s most-wanted bandit, Flynn Rider, hides in a convenient tower, he immediately becomes captive of the tower’s longtime resident, Rapunzel. She hits him with a frying pan and hides his satchel containing his stolen goods. Rapunzel promises to return his satchel if he takes her to see the lanterns that roam the sky every year on her birthday. He agrees and the two set off on an adventure full of excitement and shocking discoveries.

Rapunzel had never been outside the tower in her 18 years and yet she was brave enough to step outside her comfort zone. She appreciated the world in all its glory and its negatives. This is an important message for viewers. It teaches us to take risks, be fearless and enjoy every minute of life, even the small, memorable moments.

The recent influx of superhero hype has caused a wave of negativity towards the superhero genre’s golden age. The films are often accused of simple ‘’escapism’’ for viewers, a way for viewers to seek distraction. But there’s so much more to the reasons behind loving superheroes and the superhero genre.

People love superheroes because they’re inspirational. Bruce Wayne/Batman lost his parents young, they were killed right in front of his eyes and he had to grow up living with that grief. Peter Parker/Spiderman also lost his parents at a young age. Both men grew up strong and intelligent, with the attitude to make the world a better place. Fans can take that same attitude when a hardship comes their way. Instead of letting it destroy their life completely, they can use the grief or pain they’re going through to do some good.

Captain America/Steve Rogers was frozen for seventy years. He went asleep in one world and woke up in a world completely different to the one he knew. But he worked at fitting in. And that’s something inspiring. People often fear change because of the unknown. Captain America may be the super soldier but he’s just any other person when they’re brought to a new place: nervous and vulnerable. But with time he adjusted. The fear of college, a new job, a new country; people can look up to Captain for the strength to carry on and adjust to their new way of life.

Superheroes are relatable. Typically the superhero make-up includes: a large emboldened icon on the chest or midsection, traditionally a cape and almost always a mask. The need to hide one’s identity can be easily applied to today’s society. Mental health issues such as depression, or grief are the identity that many people hide from the world. Just like a superhero needs to hide who they truly are from the world, people often feel they need to hide who they are and what’s really going on in their lives from family and friends. They take comfort in the fact that even the strongest people in the world need to hide too.

Every superhero has a weakness. Superman’s is kryptonite, Iron Man has a heart condition. But they’re not afraid of their weaknesses and coming face to face with them. Weaknesses are in all of us. But by relating to our favourite superheroes and their weaknesses, we can gain the strength to come face to face with ours without feeling ashamed or scared.

Superheroes are figures of hope. In difficult times, people need someone who they feel can save them. They need an image of a saviour who will help them when they can’t fend for themselves. The God of Thunder, a caped crusader, the man of steel, Iron man, Hulk, the web shooting spider, are the saviours we need. Watching them come up against the toughest guys in the galaxy gives us that comfort that we need to feel safe. They also represent hope by showing examples of idealistic behaviour. Tony Stark is the billionaire CEO, Peter Parker is the genius student, Clark Kent is the hotshot journalist. They are what we best imagine we could be. They embody what we would like to be able to achieve in life.

Whatever is said about superhero movies, superheroes themselves are something needed in this world, even if they just exist in the pages of comics books, or in the big screen.

Instagram is changing to an algorithmic feed, which means that it will order posts based largely on popularity and interest. This is nothing new for social media users, Twitter changed to this recently and Facebook has been using this method since 2011.

Users dedicate so much of their time to these apps. On Instagram people are putting up snippets of their lives. They want the world to know who they are, from ordinary people to celebrities. Posting pieces of their lives on social media platforms is a way for people to create an identity in the online world. An identity that other people want to know more about. But now Instagram is going to make it harder for users to gain recognition as it switches to an algorithmic feed.

The layout of Instagram feeds will be based on the users’ interests. People will be seeing the content based on the likelihood that they’ll be interested in it. Instagram is giving its users what it thinks they want and only what they want. Changing to algorithms decreases the chances of finding something new by giving users posts that they care about. For example, if users miss posts from their favourite band or artist the night before, with the new Instagram feed, that post will be waiting for them when they login to the app the next morning, despite the time difference.

Blogger at ‘’The Fashionista Observer’’, Roisin Scanlan, has said she is not a fan of the new algorithmic feed because she ‘’always loved the app for its real-time updates’’. However, she believes the new changes should be seen in a positive light from bloggers and social influencers.

‘’This new algorithm should encourage the online community to be more active and post on a regular basis while increasing their interaction’’.

She does admit that ‘’it’s not an ideal situation from both a blogger’s perspective and someone who enjoys looking at others Instagram’s,’’ but ‘’it’s something we have to adapt to and ensure we stay active and always interacting.’’

So many artists and start-ups depend on apps like Instagram to flourish. Many people’s tastes and interests change everyday. Something that could be irrelevant to them today, could be their latest passion tomorrow. But algorithms simply cater to their known interests.

When using apps like Instagram, people can feel like they own it because it’s a blank platform for them to build a portfolio of their lives and interests. The new change is a reminder to users that they just have an account with the app, they don’t have any ownership there.

Films don’t necessarily need to be a good watch to be successful, as long as they rake in the millions or even billions that satisfies the thirst of Hollywood movie makers.

Look at the recent ‘’Batman Vs Superman’’ film. It’s been torn apart by critics and has a rating of 29% on rotten tomatoes. Yet, it hit a record breaking opening weekend.

Good or bad, it seems it doesn’t matter. As long as the money is made, the film can be successful. Films that get no critical acclaim, and receive no awards are some of the ones that are featured in the highest grossing list. Both ‘’The Avengers’’ movies stand in the top ten with record breaking figures, but these films weren’t featured on the Oscar nominations list.

That’s the difference between Oscar worthy movies and money worthy movies. Oscar winning movies are usually not the highest grossing or the most discussed or marketed films. Award winning movies tend be drama, thriller, and romantic types such as The Revenant, Slumdog Millionaire, The Artist, and The King’s Speech. They tend to be the types of film that would be a single watch. While all movies wish to make money, the award ones tend to portray they were made for something more. Possibly to convey a message, to tell a true story in a larger light, to open the viewer’s eyes to a crisis, or to inform of events in the past. They don’t necessarily appeal to everyone’s tastes, which is why they don’t gross as much money but they get the success they deserve in the form of a Golden Globe or Oscar statuette.

There has been a large increase in the number of movies that are made simply to make money. The Superhero genre is a massive one. Directors are putting themselves forward for these types of films because they’re guaranteed success in the box office. The Avengers, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Spider-man are all in the highest grossing films top 50 list. Good or bad job, people will still purchase the tickets because they love the idea of the movies. A team of powerful individuals coming together to save the world, explosions and action packed fighting, that’s the storylines that’s making the money. We’re seeing more films that aren’t just about being on the big screen, they’re about hitting the shelves of shops everywhere. Toy Figurines, Bed sheets, School accessories, whatever form these movies can be marketed in, it will happen. There’s Iron Man and Captain America breakfast cereal available in supermarkets in the run up to Civil War. When watching these type of films, it can often feel like they aren’t concerned about the critical response. It seems that their focus is on the potential figures the film can gross.

Every film is written and produced for a purpose, some for money, and some for award winning. While we’re seeing more for money, there still is the portion of movies being made to attract the attention of the award ceremonies. With so many superhero type movies being made, it will be interesting to see if, eventually, they make the nominations list for Best Picture.

As people grow older they become wiser, as their life experience increases. Technology is similar to that growth, as the years go on, technology evolves, becoming stronger and better with age.

Mobile phones have evolved incredibly. In April 1973, Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, made the world’s first mobile phone call. The phone he used weighed 1.1kg, and measured in at 228.6x127x44.4mm. Fast forward forty years and things are very different. We’ve had brick phones to flip phones to candy bar phones to smartphones. What started off as something for making phone calls on the go, has transformed from mobile phone to mobile device. A phone today is so much more than making phone calls. It’s used for surfing the web, checking and sending emails, checking social media and updating statuses, snapping pictures when out and about, recording lectures/meetings (eliminating the need for note taking), and reading news.

Mobile phones are doing the job of so many other products. When the camera feature first appeared, the quality was appalling and the feature was just considered as an extra. Now, consumers are no longer interested in a point-and-shoot camera, they just use their phones because the quality has improved considerably. Print newspapers are suffering considerably as people switch to reading the news via apps available on their phones.

Modern day smartphones have changed everything that consumers expect from their phones. Phones have transformed into a virtual toolbox with an option/solution for almost every need.

Computers in the form of personal desktops, laptops and tablets have become such an important part of everyday life, it’s difficult to imagine a time when they didn’t exist. The first digital computing device was developed in 1944, it was called the Mark 1, and it weighed five tonnes and was used only for calculations. Fast forward seventy-two years and things are very different. We’ve gone from massive machines, to slim screens, to large monitors to touch screens. What started off as something for calculations has transformed completely.

Computers are used to surf the net, to write essays, to shop, to research. Computers have made life easier. Without computers, if we wanted to know something, we’d be searching the library shelves for hours to find any kind of reference. Now we have Google. The days of writing letters, and popping them in the post box are over as we switch to email for instant delivery and reply. There’s no need to go to the shops, as you can now visit the website, fill your basket with as much as possible, hit the checkout button and then relax as your purchases are on route. Televisions are becoming a thing of the past as people switch to online streaming.

Technology is exciting because you never know what development can come next. So much has changed since computers and mobile phones were first introduced to the market. In the years ahead, it seems we’ll be thinking not how technology will change but how technology will change us.
