What are the symptoms?

The severity and the type of symptoms associated with spondylolisthesis depend on the grade of the condition. Grades range from low to high (1 to 5), with each grade representing the percentage of vertebrae slippage. For example, Grade 1 indicates slippage of less than 25 percent, while Grade 5 represents 100 percent slippage—where the top vertebra completely falls off the supporting bone below it.

Common complaints range from local pain to radiating pain. You may experience leg pain or pain in the buttock, or you may feel a more generalized numbness, tingling, or weakness. It all depends on the amount of contact with the nerves.

An inability to control urine or stool, or to initiate a urine stream, could indicate that the slippage may be pushing on the spinal cord itself. This would be considered a medical emergency, so anyone with these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

What are the most common treatments?

Cortisone injections straight into the joint, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), hot packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and therapeutic exercises are commonly employed.

If deemed necessary, a surgical procedure can eliminate any contact a vertebra has with a nerve and stabilize the vertebrae to prevent further slippage.

Which treatments work best?

Once the slippage has happened or you have been diagnosed with a progressive form of this condition, it is recommended that you seek professional help from a qualified expert in spondylolisthesis who can initiate the most comprehensive and conservative approach possible.

The principles of Muscle Balance Therapy™ can help you strategically assess your individual muscle imbalances and develop a very targeted corrective program to meet your specific needs.

The two most common reasons for lower back nerve pair is from a pinched nerve or herniated disc caused by muscle imbalances, which are the result of "postural dysfunctions." These dysfunctions put abnormal pressure on the disc that will cause increased wear and tear over time. Eventually, the weak spot will give way and make contact with the nerve, bringing you pain.

If your pinched nerve is not due to a disc-related problem, understand that muscle imbalances can change the position and the pull of muscles. When this happens, these muscles - as well as other structures - can put abnormal pressure on the nerve (or pinching it) and cause pain.

It is important to understand that the neither the pinching nor the increased pressure on a nerve happen overnight. You may be come symptomatic very quickly, but it takes a long time before conditions are right for the nerve to be put under enough pressure to cause pain.

For many, back pain is among the worst types of pain to deal with on a daily basis. It is a very real problem that is often caused by some imbalanced structural problem or from an injury.

But it is important to keep in mind that all pain is "information." When there is a problem with your body, your body communicates this to your brain via nerve impulses. These impulses are "pain signals" that send the injury information to the brain to make you uncomfortable in an effort to force you to do something about it. Hopefully, we then address the issue ourselves or contact an expert to do something, while also not doing additional things to continue the problem and make it chronic.

On the whole this is a good system. However, it becomes an issue with long-term pain problems and also when nerves are damaged or become overactive. In these cases a person can have functional movement and no longer have the original structural damage, but still be in pain. Also we have cases where the pain changes from area to area, called migrating pain. And often times, pain is made much worse (or made chronic) by the way we think about it... and how often we think about it!

While emotions are natural and important parts of life, when taken to excess they can be damaging to the body.

When emotions are extremely abrupt, intense or persistent, they may over time produce functional disorders of the organs by upsetting the harmonious balance of blood and energy. We are talking here of excessive feelings of Joy, Anger, Melancholy, Anxiety, Grief, Fear, and Fright. Let's take a look at each for examples.

Anger causes an adverse flow of liver energy. Under normal conditions, the liver purifies blood and sends it downward. However, during moments of prolonged anger, the liver sends blood upward, and this can cause a flushed face, red eyes, headache or fainting. This is why angry people tend to have red faces and also complain of headache pain.

What do we do on a daily basis? We wake up, sit down, have a cup of coffee and read the newspaper. We sit in our car and drive to work. We arrive at work and sit down to work. For the next several hours we place and answer phone calls, enter data, research information and communicate with the computer. After the long day, we get back in our car and drive home. We get home, sit down and have dinner, watch the television, and go to bed. Eight hours later, press repeat. The vicious cycle begins again! Fast forward ten years later;

First, alternative therapies are an art form, not a science. Second, to be most effective, all holistic wellness programs demand the daily involvement of the person in need of the care.

Alternative therapies are an art because, unlike science, precise results cannot be repeated over and over. And this is not a sign of anything lacking in alternative methods, but solely due to the fact that your health issue almost certainly has more than one simple cause and will need a shifting strategy of therapies to finally heal.
