Yet Another Year End Post

Yeah it's time for one of those again. This blog is usually about my drawing exploits but with the big reset for SPACE this year working on the show seems to be all I did. I did manage to produce the face book experimental mini-comic "Garnet & Ruby" which you can read more about in the post below.

I wrote a short story entitled "The Spoils" which will be drawn by J.M.Hunter. Hopefully it will show up for SPACE in some form.

I'm working on a sequel to R&G for Oh,Comics! #24 "Machines" which with any luck will be ready for SPACE 2016 on April 9 & 10, 2016. Here's pencils for page 2 which is as far I've gotten.

I also took a screen printing class from Upright Press which I haven't had a chance to utilize. Hopefully there will be a screen print project sometime in 2016. Check out Jesse and Upright Press at

What the Heck Happened to 2014?

If you follow my stuff only here, sorry. I only had one post all year. Seems like it was a busy year but when I stopped to look I really didn't do much drawing. I started off the year putting "Leaves" together. The artwork for Bunny Blues / Leaves #6 which concluded the story arc was done back in September '13 in time for SPX. The "Leaves" TPB made it's debut at SPACE '14. I also had Oh,Comics! #22 "Time" ready for SPACE with my 4 page story, "Chronos Musca Domestica", which was completed in October '13. The only artwork I did was the cover for "Leaves" which you can see in the post below and a Minicomics Day minicomic, ZZZ!!! that I did at the Indie Comics Fair back in March. There it is in the pic with the other minis that were produced that day.

And I have finished two pages of my Mr. Rifft story for Oh,Comics! #23 "Music" coming to SPACE 2015.

I also finally finished the coloring of "Invasion of the Blood Sucking Martian Crunchies" which has been around forever. I had that book ready for "Return of the Killer Crafts" back in October.

I haven't figured out what the next big project is. You can read about the possibilities from my previous post. I did write most of my cataract story that I've been meaning to do but it's very word heavy and I need to see how to cut it and make it work as a comic.

I also have put together all my old Science Fiction and Fantasy stories into one 180 page volume entitled, "Amazing Tales of Entropy" which will be available at SPACE 2015. It includes Gremlin which hasn't seen print in a decade or more. More about that in a future post. I'll have a sample copy with me at all my post-SPACE stops.

Speaking of stops, here's a list of all the shows I did this year which is another reason I didn't get much drawing done. Probably my busiest year yet.

Leaves and Future Projects

Haven't been here for awhile. I did manage to get the Bunny Blues Leaves collection together now just entitled "Leaves". It includes all 6 issues of the BB/L series plus all the Oh,Comics! shorts that were not included in "Big Ears and Flat Feet". Total page count is 190! It's available at the Back Porch Comics page. If you only want a few issues of the BB/L series they are still available on the website until they run out.

I haven't figured out what I want to work on next. I been so busy with SPACE I haven't drawn anything since October.

One project that I might work on is the long form Vugz webcomic which I have mentioned here before. The idea of doing a painted page every week has me scared a bit. I have collected the Vugz short stories that have appeared in Oh, Comics! and the SPACE Anthology in a full color minicomic "Vugz:Fragments" available at the Back Porch Comics page.
Also I have a few other projects in various states including:
A cataract comic- the story of all the crazy stuff that happened on my way to getting cataract surgery.

Pig Thief- Another memoir comic about my kindergarten days and lessons learned that I was trying to do as a linocut book.
Purple Sky- a memoir comic about my failing grade in elementary school art class. I started this a few years ago but at the time I decided to make if fiction but I didn't like the way it turned out so I decided if I do it will be the real story.

Flakes- The next story line in the Bunny Blues mythos.

I was also planning on putting together a collection of all my science fiction and fantasy stories into one volume and have it ready for SPACE next year. It will include all the Gremlin stuff, and short stories that appeared in Oh,Comics! and other anthologies I contributed to over the years.

I'll be at The Big Comic Show at the Pickerington Library on May 17 and also Derby City Con on June 28 &29.

2013 is coming close to an end. It's been the busiest year ever for Back Porch Comics.

As far as comics I finally finished Bunny Blues / Leaves #6 in September. I'm hoping to collect all 6 issues plus some of the Oh,Comics! shorts into a TPB in time for SPACE. I had to re-scan and re-letter the first two issues because the resolution was too low.

Oh, Comics ! #22 "Time" is in the works. I've completed the art for my 4 page Bunny Blues story, "Chronos Musca Domestica".

Also did a new linocut cover for a collection of science fiction stories of mine involving robots called "Charge".

I 'm not sure what my next long term project will be but I'm thinking about starting the long form Vugz project.

I just finished the art for the final page of the Bunny Blues / Leaves mini-series. It's page 24 of issue 6 and page 123 of the series. I'm ashamed to say I started it about 1999. The first page which was completed sometime in 1999 is shown above. ( I haven't unearthed the original page yet, which has the exact completetion date jotted on the back). BB/L premiered at the old Mid-Ohio Con in 1999. The final issue will premiere at SPX this September 14 & 15 and make it's Columbus premiere the following week at Independents Day. All 6 issues will be available at both shows as well as at SPACE on April, 12 & 13, 2014.

I just completed pages 22 & 23 of Bunny Blues / Leaves #6. The last chapter of the 123 page story (page 121 & 122). Here's a stop motion video showing about an hours worth of stipple work from page 23 in about 16 seconds. Didn't quite work out like I wanted it. I should have used a tripod. anyway here it is. On to page 123!!!!

Now that SPACE is done for this year and most of the dust has settled I'm back to finishing the big project. Yeah, I didn't finish Bunny Blues / Leaves in time for SPACE. I had 5 pages to go when I put it down to finish up everything that needed to be done for SPACE plus Oh,Comics! 21, Untitled 9 and the SPACE Anthology 2013. But now I'm back at it and managed to finish page 20 of BB/L #6 this long weekend. Above is a panel from that page. I also managed to do a pencil layout for a linocut SPACE poster I'm planning on doing this summer. More on that soon. I hope to have the poster done in time for Derby City Con in Louisville KY on June 29 and BB/L #6 done in time for SPX in September.

Lots of changes this time around.

2/1/13- Oh,Comics! #21- "Magic"- The strip I originally intended for Oh,Comics! will now be switched to the SPACE Anthology 2013. I've worked up a 3 page Bunny Blues strip featuring Marcel. It's all done!

2/15/13- SPACE Anthology 2013- 4 page Vugz Strip is complete!

3/30/13- Untitled #9- 1 to 4 page Entropy Alley Strip.

3/31/13- Bunny Blues / Leaves #6- Got page 19 done. I finally sat down to finish layouts and it looks like only a few more pages so I think this project will be done in time for SPACE!

2/1/13- Oh,Comics! #21- "Magic"- 4 page Vugz Strip. Script is complete, two pages are penciled and inked and one page is painted. (Painting without lines above).

2/15/13- Here's the zig the new linoleum cut project for the 2013 COLUMBUS FEBRUARY AVANT-GARDE ART & CRAFT SHOW on 2/16/13 is now on the back burner. I got it all figured out over the holidays but it got too big to get done in time. It was looking like about 16 plates. I'll still have the 10th aniversery printing of "Why I'm Not Musical"

2/15/13- New linoleum cut project. I'll be at the 2013 COLUMBUS FEBRUARY AVANT-GARDE ART & CRAFT SHOW on 2/16/13. To get in I promised I would just be selling hand-made comics and tee-shirts. I'm going to do a new printing of "Why I'm Not Musical" which will be 10 years old this year. I'll also have copies of "Obstacle" but I wanted something new. I'll work something over the holidays.

Things have been pretty busy around here. I finally finished the secret project at the end of September. In the last month I was at the Cincinnati Comic Expo, MIX: CCAD Celebration of Comics, The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum and the Bowl full of Happiness Exhibit at the Wild Goose Collective. Got the Art Explorer Post 407 started on this years Lump of Coal. Also got all the SPACE Prize books up on the site and caught up on the SPACE book keeping and opened the registrations up to new exhibitors.

So I haven't up dated this blog for a while. The drawing you see here are some of the con sketches I promised over a month ago. These two are from SMACC back in 2010. We were given some art supplies from Blicks which consited of a small sketch book and a red pastel so I thought I should do something with them.

Now that things have settled down alittle at least until Thanksgiving (hopefully will be at Genghis Con) I'm going to get started on new (and old) projects. Below is list of those projects:

I have nothing new to show anybody since I'm wrapping up the secret project and can't show any of that so here's the first of some con sketches I've done over the last few years. If you know me you know I don't draw other people's characters but a few years ago I was doing an Arena Con at the Arena Grand Theater while Star Wars Clone Wars was running and drew a few of these and handed them out to the kids going to the movie. There's also a Ahsoka that is pretty terrible so you probably won't ever see that. Thanks to Victor Dandridge for organizing the the Arena Cons. I also did one during one of the Batman movies and have a Batman sketch that is really bad.

Good News / Bad News

As the title says I got good news and bad news.

Good news is I finally got back to working on Bunny Blues / Leaves #6 and completed pages 16 & 17. The bad news is I have a secret project that will keep me tied up all summer and I will never be able to share it here.
