Ms. Hill sang and deeply appreciated music at a young age, known for being very animated, she also acted, danced and enjoyed performance art of various kinds. She spent her formative years acting in plays and being cast in television commercials, as well as the daytime drama ‘As the World Turns’, Steven Soderbergh’s ‘King of the Hill’, and ‘Sister Act II’ with Whoopi Goldberg. Ironically all of this was done while she was still a full-time student. After graduating high school with stellar grades, she attended Columbia University in New York while a member of the then up and coming musical group the Fugees. Ms. Hill was a great academician, but her unique gifts, interest and pursuits would take her in the direction of profound experience and great accomplishment not just in the classroom, but also beyond it. This of course would not negatively alter her life-long love of learning, invention and acquiring knowledge, but would enhance it. She often envisioned herself as able to very naturally make the kind of great contributions that often come from people with great minds and the passion and discipline required in order to bring great things into fruition. She would establish a reputation in the music world as the lone female member of The Fugees, whose record sales would make them the second biggest selling R&B act worldwide since Michael Jackson. She launched her solo career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned a record breaking five Grammy Awards.

They Might Be Giants (approx. 9:00pm)
They Might Be Giants is a band from New York City founded by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. TMBG writes, records and tours continuously, has been involved in numerous television and film projects, and has an on-going podcast. They have won two Grammies and in the spring of 2012 will celebrate their thirtieth year in music.

J. Roddy Walston and the Business (approx. 7:30pm)
J Roddy Walston is not soft like someone born into privilege, but he does bear the hesitant scars of a man who fought his way out of a pedigree. Yoked from day one to a musical lineage that included “both kinds of music – country and gospel.” He was told with regularity that it was close to sin to play either for any reason but God and Family. And that when the city comes courting with contracts and such he was expected to follow tradition…and walk away.

The Deloreans (approx. 6pm)
When Jeremy Perry steps on stage with his band The Deloreans, he typically dons a dark suit with a tie. His bandmates, if you’ll forgive the pun, follow suit. The suits are a signature of sorts for a band that has begun to distinguish itself musically as well as visually in 2011, finding its way into the ears of new fans outside Louisville by way of Internet-driven word of mouth and an increasing number of shows outside the friendly confines of the River City.

Mount Eerie, Tara Jane O’Neil, and No Kids will be playing at the Red Mile Round Barn on Thursday, October 22nd at 8:30PM. All Ages. No word just yet on prices…

We caught the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise tour at the Red Mile Round Barn, and it made for an incredible concert experience. While the legendary performers may have had a lot to do with it, the beautiful venue added to the entire experience. On that note, we’ve been fortunate to catch each of these acts in the past, including bringing in No Kids for one of our own shows with the first Casiotone for the Painfully Alone show last October, we caught former Louisvillian Tara Jane O’Neil at Terrastock in ’08. Tara has a new album coming out soon entitled A Ways Away to be released on K records, which, as I’m sure I’ve said before, is one of the more influential record labels for me. Notably, her move follows her friends Saturday Looks Good to Me having joined the K crew for their last album.  Lastly, Mount Eerie came to town with Julie Dorion to Skull Alley, and it was one of the few shows you’ll venture into and see Will Oldham aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy sitting on the floor enraptured by the artist on stage.

I have no idea how we missed this one…and even though it’s somewhat old news from the vault by this point, we wanted to be sure everyone else knew. Back at the end of April, Scott Carney was featured by American Songwriter as Wax Fang was the Songwriter of the Week. The feature includes a nice interview with Scott that includes mention of where he was in his life when writing La La Land, and some of the artists that influence him, including our own Yim Yames.

We finally caught Wax Fang back in February 2008 and we’ve been addicted ever since. After hearing La La Land, and seeing the guys perform live, it doesn’t take much to recognize how truly gifted of songwriters the guys are.  There may only be two albums to their name consisting of all 17 songs they’ve registered with BMI, but hopefully the recent absence means the guys have been putting in studio time towards another incredible album.

Juffage, Tints, the-zero-element, & Karass are performing at Skull Alley on August 5th in celebration of Rahman’s birthday albeit 2 days belated, because, well,he’ll only turn 28 once. It’s hardly a secret that we love The Zero Element and while their instrumental dance rock may not do it for everyone, I find them to be one of the absolute best bands in the area. For me, VHS or Beta’s “Irreversible” is the finest moment on their Night on Fire album, and if they were to stick to the path created by that song, they would be The Zero Element.

Karass is the new side project of Greg Ward from the Zero Element, and you can grab a copy of the album HERE.

Juffage appears to be one of the hardest working bands coming out of Chicago with an exhaustive tour schedule reminiscent of These United States. Described as a one-man-band who loops everything he can fit into his car all the while changing the face of experimental music as we know it, Jeff T. Smith’s loops of “fuzzed-out bass line and tribal drums sound like a tape salvaged from humanity’s final days on Earth” – Andy Downing, Chicago Tribune

Tints is new to us, and we look forward to seeing what they’ve got.  From the sound of their MySpace page, they seem to conflict with the other fairly electro sounds of the other bands, but it could present a nice mix of talent and style.

The Glassworks Summer Rooftop Series continues on August 21st with You’re My Density and The Pass, two of Louisville’s most diverse indie pop bands. The new-wave pyschedelic sound of The Pass and the synthpop stylings of You’re My Density will create the perfect soundtrack for a summer night.  All for $7 (all ages).

Doors open @ 7:30 with a DJ set, and music going strong until midnight!

Invaders, D. Rider (Members of U.S. Maple), Buffalo Bill and Ben Purdom are performing on August 7th @ the Glassworks Rooftop. As I’m sure we’ve made clear, we love parties on the Glassworks Rooftop, and hearing good music tops it off perfectly. For $7 you get not only great music, but great atmosphere with a great view of the city.  Below is a little press…

The Decibel Tolls turned us onto an upcoming show by The Black Angels . The group, whose name is derived from an old Velvet Underground track (and even their logo is an inverted image of Nico), plays a heavy kind of psych revival and have received comparisons to Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized mastermind Jason Pierce as well as The Warlocks and Black Mountain, invoking dirges reminiscent of both The Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators.

The Black Angels – Dee Ree Shee

Teenage Angela, Bad Mouth, and Cincinnati’s Till Plains and The Read are bringing their house party antics to Skull Alley on Sunday, August 9th where they can open it up while still maintaining that house party vibe.  The show goes on at 7:30 for $5, but don’t try the fashionably late thing…it’s over by 10:30ish.

Call me crazy, but I am excited for this show. The Killers are coming to the Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana on August 8th as part of the Summer Concert Series they have in their big, outdoor amphitheater. I was a huge Killers fan after Hot Fuss. Then came Sam’s Town, and I didn’t fall in love with the album, but I could appreciate it for what it was – – a follow-up to a fantastic album. I eagerly awaited the release of their third album, Day & Age, only to be disappointed (“are we human or are we dancer?”). That said, I still find time to listen to Hot Fuss now and then, and have yet to see them live. They played at The Palace back in September 2007, but I missed it. The Horseshoe as a venue is fantastic. They have a great set-up that looks huge, but feels small when you are there. The sound is great and the backdrop is pretty cool too. I’ve seen a couple shows there and have not been disappointed yet. Bring a few extra bucks for brew and pocketful more if you want to stick around to gamble (although you won’t have a problem finding an ATM). We’ve given away tix to shows at the Horseshoe before, so we will see what we can do for you for this one. In the meantime, I’ll be dusting off Sam’s Town and Day & Age and give them another chance (Sawdust will stay on the shelf).

The Killers- Human

The Killers will join us on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. as part of our Outdoor Summer Concert Series.

The Killers are touring in support of the band’s latest opus, Day & Age, which surfaced last fall. The Las Vegas-based group worked with Scottish electronic-music whiz Stuart Price (Madonna, Missy Elliot) on Day & Age, its third album and follow-up to 2006’s Sam’s Town (the band released Sawdust, a collection of studio outtakes and b-sides last year). Released in September, the album peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, and has sold almost a half-million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Worldwide, the set has sold 1.6 million copies.

The Pass, a relatively new band hitting the Louisville scene in a big way., has  a new feature spot on video-blog This Man is Not My Father.  The Pass recently performed with another BS favorite, You’re My Density, and they’ve got another show coming up this Saturday, August 1st at the Pour Haus to put out their debut album “Colors”.  The Pass are described as “music [that] is a beautifully composed combination of rock and electronic guaranteed to make you dance.”

John Berry & the Outliers and Chickens and Pigs are performing at Seidenfadens on August 1st for $5.  In my invitation to the show, it simply read:

Requirements: Dancing shoes, Bourbon, and a Cab ride home. You won’t be leaving on your own.

Those requirements seem about right, although being 21+ and having $5 would be additional minimum requirements.  John Berry is known for the kind of fun honky tonk music that moves crowds, even those without the disposition towards honky tonk, so long as they’ll open themselves to having fun.

The Late Seating at Actor’s Theatre of Louisville has put together a great lineup for Friday, August 7th for after the August Gallery Hop, running from 8:30-11.

The Late Seating at Actors is a late night series at Actors Theatre of Louisville that features an electric mixture of new work by local Louisville artists in performance, music and visual art.

The night’s performances feature The Deloreans, Cougar Express and Scott Carney of Wax Fang. The Deloreans have seemingly been everywhere lately, and Scott Carney seems to have been rather absent (Writing in studio?), so if you haven’t gotten to see The Deloreans, now is your chance, and since you haven’t gotten to see Scott in a while, now is your chance.
