D.W. Box and One Long Song will be playing the 2:30 spot on Saturday. Diane Williams is from just over the bridge in Clark Co., Indiana could essentially be a one woman DIY show, but she gets help here and there from a few others. Though born as a New Yorker, she’s spent most of her life in the Louisville area, blowing people’s minds with her computer-laden DIY style..

Morning State is playing the 2pm set on Saturday. These guys just released their debut album You Know People I Know People on May 6th. These guys have gotten nice write ups in Spin, Wired & Paste Magazines. For a sort of noise rock band, they’ve got some incredible hooks in there and some very poppy guitar work without sounding very poppy, drawing comparisons to Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, or the new Nada Surf. I’ve heard great things about the shows these guys have been putting on…

If you want tickets to the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy show on July 26th in J-Town, then you better run to Leatherhead, 1601 Bardstown Road, right now because there are only 28 tickets left as of 1pm (they are $10 bucks each). There were only 300 tickets to begin with and it has sold out online and at Wild and Woolly Video. I just grabbed mine and was reading the back trying to figure out where “Funtown” is located. Turns out you have to email somebody after you buy your ticket just to find out where the venue is. I think that is fantastic. Click on the flyer below for more info, or go to Drag City Records for details. The doors open at 5:30 and the show starts proptly at 7pm. This means you can still catch some of the Snowden show at Forecastle before heading to the Funhouse, wherever that may be. No Beer, Alcohol or Drugs.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy had a beatiful track on this years Louisville is for Lovers album and just released Lie Down in the Light, a highly acclaimed album and one of my favorites of the year.

What to Do, What to Do?: July 4th Weekend in Louisville

A Perfect July 4th Holiday?…

We’ve got the day mapped out & highly encourage any and everyone to join us…..first, from our place on Baxter, we’ll be biking down to Derby City Espresso for some BBQ-ing on the back patio (below the incredible new Obama piece) & chomping potato salad and potentially drinking things kids aren’t allowed to have (but if you do come, you should try to bring something to contribute) around 2…

Around 5:30-ish, we’ll be biking down to the Waterfront to catch Los Lobos, MOFRO, George Clinton & Funkadelic show [George Clinton - Atomic Dog, JJ Grey & Mofro - Florida, Los Lobos - Evangeline], but consider that doing this will make you miss Weird Al Yankovic…

Afterwards, we’re going to head back to DCE for desert & fireworks until around 11ish, before putting our dancing shoes on and heading to Fuzion for one of their best DJ nights in a while, featuring an assortment of great DJs, including Action Jackson (of Daft Crunk), but perhaps more notably, Franki Chan, whose IHEARTCOMIX, is supposed to be pretty incredible (consider the following week he’s playing the Viper Room, Beauty Bar and McCarren Pool with Matt & Kim as a pretty strong affirmation of that)…

Forecastle Preview: Pomegranates - Day 2

Pomegranates are playing Forecastle 1-1:30 slot on Saturday. Pomegranates are our neighbors to the north, hailing from Cincinnati, OH and play a 50’s Pop/Surf/Shoegaze kind of sound, described by Music Slut as sounding like Tortoise on a ski trip with Grizzly Bear. The indie popsters recently released their debut Everything Is Alive on Lujo Records, the label that snapped them up after self-releasing their debut EP Two Eyes in June of last year, which is essentially when the guys got together as a band. Things haven’t slowed down for them either, becoming Spin’s Artist of the Day, playing Monolith, touring with Islands and being discussed extensively in the blogosphere.

I haven’t been to Skull Alley yet, but I really want to go check it out. It is the newest music venue in town and from the pics it looks pretty nice. Skull Alley is located at 1017 East Broadway (and also serves as a screenprinting studio and record label, Brightskull). Bu Hao Ting is the only band I know of the four (and Caleb Lionheart is out), but I’d be going to check out the new digs. I’ve you have been, feel free to comment and let us know what you think…

Listen to some songs from her new album, West 28th Street” on her myspace page, then catch her at ear X-tacy Wednesday, 7/2, at 6pm or at Forecastle on the 27th. We have been big fans since she broke out Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” at the Label X showcase back in December ‘07. On top of giving a great performance, her set list was written on the back of a Makers napkin. Indeed, her future is bright!

FORECASTLE: Method Man canceled, GZA/Genius & Del the Funky Homosapien pick up the slack

According to the Forecastle website, Headliner Method Man has canceled his appearance at Forecastle, but GZA & Del tha Funky Homosapien have been added to take his place.

At present, it appears that nobody, including the organizers, have gotten a clear picture on why Meth pulled out, but he should’ve known that wouldn’t prevent JK from giving birth to a bigger and better Forecastle than ever, thanks to former Wu fellow, GZA/Genius & Del. I had the chance to see GZA/Genius at Deal Real Records off Carnaby Street in London, along with Mos Def, and the impromtu concert packed the place out, and GZA twisted the entire place with his signature wordplay. While GZA’s album, Pro Tools (which sounds like a Mac application), is as yet still unrelease, Del the Funky Homosapien’s The 11th Hour this year has been well-received. Pitchfork notes that “the barrage of lyrics is exhausting without being tedious, with endlessly-parseable knots of phraseology and weird little asides everywhere to keep your attention”, this Forecastle could prove to be the battle of the linguists….

Bejeezus Magazine is throwing an “Independents Day” Party on JULY 3rd, 9PM at the Nachbar! Mark your calendars! It will be a celebration of the magazine’s growth and of southern culture in general, with bands ranging from bluegrass, to “old-timey,” to southern rock. Two bands inside and two outside, with a tent in the backyard so rain or shine, it is on.
The Louisville Film Society will also be projecting vintage footage outside to enhance the atmosphere! Meet the staff, get a free copy of the zine (while they last) and reign in July 4th weekend properly!

Imaad Wasif & RTX @ Pour Haus - 7/1 (Tonight!)

Imaad Wasif & Two Part Beast is playing the Pour Haus tonight with RTX (essentially Royal Trux not playing Royal Trux songs). Imaad Wasif recently self-released his second full length album, Strange Hexes, which ranges from late ‘60s acid rock to ‘70s proto-metal. If you didn’t get enough rock with Terrastock, or you regret missing it, Imaad is the next best thing you’ve got.

RTX adds to the arsenal, promoting their latest Western Xterminator, with psychedlic rock that drifts between hazy and hazardous, and is a playground for ex-Royal Trux frontwoman, Jennifer Herrema, to share her violent, violent wisdom with us. Also, and as something of an aside, this picture sort of freaks me out.

I’m going…and I’m a little worried of what could happen…
