There were some spectacular uses of bacon on display at the Saturday session of the 2016 Devoured Phoenix culinary festival, including deep fried bacon wrapped shrimp with jalapeno aioli from Desert Rose Steakhouse (above photo).

The bacon rimmed spiked horchata by Loews Ventana Canyon was one of the best bacon cocktails I’ve ever tasted.

And these bourbon bacon chocolate chip cookies from T. Cook’s were a sweet highlight!

Bravo to the local restaurants that stepped up their bacon game at this year’s event. I’m looking forward to finding out what tomorrow’s session brings!

The post Devoured Phoenix 2016 – Saturday Session first appeared on Bacon Unwrapped.

The 8th Annual Baconfest Chicago will take place at the UIC Forum on April 30 and May 1. The event will feature over 150 restaurants. The fest includes three sessions: lunch and dinner on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. Each session will feature a brand new line up of 50- 60 restaurants/chefs.

In addition to hosting a food drive and raffle at the event, Baconfest Chicago donates a portion of proceeds from ticket sales to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. In 2015 alone, Baconfest donated $75,000 to the organization. Since 2009, Baconfest has donated more than $300,000 to Chicago’s food bank, which translates into nearly 1,000,000 meals for hungry people in the area.

We survived another Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

Between serving as an official judge (which meant tasting nearly every dish served at the festival within a two hour period) and exploring the several themed bars distributed throughout the Iowa Events Center, surviving this event was no small feat.

This year’s theme was “Body by Bacon” which resulted in a high-energy vibe throughout the festival featuring aerobics classes, pop-up nightclubs, and live music.

But (theoretically) we were there for the bacon.

Among the standout items served was “The Elvis” pizza by Gusto Pizza Co., which featured a deliciously gooey combination of peanut butter, banana, bacon, mozzarella and honey.

Chocolaterie Stam featured two gelato flavors: Bacon Caramel and Pancakes, Maple & Bacon.

Two items from Sakari Sushi Lounge – Bacon Dynamite Shrimp and the BLT Roll – were also surprisingly enjoyable ways of consuming bacon.

And as always, the people-watching was outstanding as an eclectic mix of bacon-themed outfits intersected with 80s-themed workout attire.

The post 2016 Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival first appeared on Bacon Unwrapped.

I admit I know very little about coffee. I only began drinking it regularly a couple years ago as some sort of new “mid-life” habit. I’m still not even sure I really like it, but it has become a daily thing for me anyway.

However, I don’t need to know much about coffee to know that Bewdly’s Maple Bacon Coffee is good. The smell of the beans when you open the bag is amazing – I’d be happy to have my house smell like that every day.

Using my new French press for the first time (and correspondingly my mug from the French Open…ahhhh the memories from last summer’s amazing European adventures…), I brewed my first cup of Maple Bacon Coffee. And it went down so smoothly. While not made with real bacon products, the ingredients used to create the maple bacon flavor were very complimentary to my breakfast that morning.

Bewdly’s Maple Bacon Coffee is gluten free, allergen free, and vegan, for those of you who care about those details. Brew a cup and enjoy it with some real bacon for a perfect start to the day.

The post Bewdly Maple Bacon Coffee first appeared on Bacon Unwrapped.

Our halftime snack during the Super Bowl this past weekend were Buscia’s Bacon Buns.

Available from Buscia’s in 3 flavors – original bacon, cheddar bacon, and maple bacon – they are shipped frozen to you. All you have to do is thaw, bake and enjoy.

The mastermind behind Buscia’s bacon buns is Sarah Starewicz, who grew up eating bacon buns made by her Polish grandmother. After baking and selling them at markets and festivals, Sarah decided to start a full time business dedicated to this Eastern European delicacy. As a bonus, Buscia’s donates 5% of net sales to Food Bank for New York City.

You don’t need a Polish grandmother – or even cooking skills – to enjoy Buscia’s Bacon Buns. Just pop them in the oven, and after 35 minutes the buns will be ready for your enjoyment!

The post Buscia’s Bacon Buns first appeared on Bacon Unwrapped.

“Nature, it turns out, is full of drunk animals…the animal that most resembles humans in its metabolic relationship to alcohol is the pig. In Australia a few years ago, a feral pig drank eighteen beers and tried to fight a cow. Modern Farmer ran a story in 2014 about a group of pigs that got into the fermenting mash at a distillery on Prince Edward Island (the owners had been giving them small amounts of leftover mash). “Some were looking at me like, ‘Woohoo!’” said one of the owners. “They were really, really, really drunk.” The next day, one of the pigs was so hungover he couldn’t stand. The owners gave him watermelon and made sure he stayed hydrated.”
