Use a professional to reduce risk of mistakes and to represent you if something goes wrong.
Organize receipts by month in an accordion binder.
Services like Shoeboxed.com digitize receipts for you to store online. Can also take photos with your iPhone and email to your Evernote.com account. Another option is PaperPort.
Don’t forget to track your mileage for business or job hunting.
Keeping organized throughout the year with software like Quicken or Quickbooks will help you to easily run reports for tax preparation.
Lost a receipt from a major retailer like Home Depot or Target. Ask them to pull up your past purchases associated with your credit card.
File early especially if you’re entitled to a return.

May I recommend that you sign up for Wireless AMBER Alerts. In the United States, the major wireless carriers have made this service available FREE to consumers.

AMBER stands for “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.” Essentially, a state-wide alert is issued when an abducted child, age 17 years or younger, is reported to a local law enforcement agency. By quickly distributing information to the public, citizens may be able to report critical information to local law enforcement.

BD-008 – BD Struggles With His Faith

Bad Dad has accepted the responsibility of laying the groundwork for his children’s spiritual journey. He tries to give them all the information they need and set a good example for them.

But BD has struggled with his faith his entire adult life. Twelve years of Catholic school and frustrations with the Church itself has pushed him away to form the opinion that the Catholic Church is Seriously Broken and fails to adapt to the fast changing culture of the 21st century.

Still holding on to his core Christian beliefs, BD is impressed that the Reformed Church has taken more obvious steps to reduce dwindling attendance, keep members engaged and interested, create an inviting environment for new recruits and even look to the youth congregation for guidance as to how to make service less boring.

BD-001 – Happy New Year

In this episode, meet your host, Roland, talk about parenting frustrations and review tips for getting rid of excess stuff. Plus, resolutions for 2007.

Clean up time — Cut the clutter

My wife did a great job removing some of the older toys from sight and circulation just before Christmas, so we’re not tripping through a complete mess. But now that the new stuff has arrived and the packaging has been tossed, it’s time to make a more thorough cleansing.

Start with video tapes of stuff the kids don’t watch anymore. Barney, free Ronald McDonald tapes, etc.

Chuck all the broken stuff. If you haven’t fixed it by now, your not likely to do it anytime soon. Same with books. Salvage what you can repair, chuck the rest.

Got any big stuff you don’t know what to do with? Post it for free on CraigsList.org. I’ve posted free stuff like an old garage door opener, broken TV, old computer, etc. Within a day someone has contacted me offering to take it off my hands.

Got a toddler bed, day bed, crib, stroller, car seat, etc. that you don’t know what to do with? Check with your local Church or place of worship. Maybe they have an outreach program to donate it to. Or sell it on CraigsList.org too. Used stuff might be just what someone needs to gently use at a grandparent’s house during short visits.

Good riddence to the following…

Disgusting sippy cups — I hope to never find one filled with crusted milk under the bed ever again!
Diapers — I swear our garbage is so much lighter now.
Child safety locks — I busted every one of those stupid little plastic contraptions.
Potty training seats — I don’t have to trip over and spill urine all over any more. Yeah!
Portable potty seats — Great for the car ’cause someone always has to pee, but I’m glad we don’t have to stink up the car with that any longer.

In 2007, I’m looking forward to…

Getting my two youngest fully trained to go to the bathroom during the night. (Still have occasional accidents even though I try to wake them up.)
Getting rid of all Barney tapes.
Watching my kids get better and more confident in music and sports.
