Privitize VPN is a Virus

Privitize VPN is billed as a free virtual private network program, but in fact what it is, is a malicious software program that infects your computer. Privitize VPN will set your homepage to google.com/webph. It will hijack your browser and set the search engine to search.privitize.com, plus install a toolbar for IE and install, Maagnipic on your computer.

I looked up Privitize VPN after a friend called me to tell me about getting infected by it, it was even in his, Manage Add-ons list. I couldn't get too far checking it out because when I googled PrivitizeVPN, and the list came up, as soon as I clicked the name to try and go to the Privitize VPN site, It was blocked by Avast as a Trojan Horse and a Malicious site.

I you were unlucky enough to download and install this malicious software, here are some ways to remove it.

AVG Secure Toolbar

This will be simple, DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT install AVG Secure Search Toolbar, it is 100% malware. This toolbar will never leave a system it is installed on, even the AVG Secure Search Toolbar Removal Tool will not remove it. The removal tool tells you it is removed, but then a couple days later it starts sending pop-ups and if you search it you will find the files. Once you delete the files then clean you system all is well, for another couple days, then it returns again. The 2 users I know that had this toolbar, said even Avast Toolbar Remover took care of it,,,, just for the toolbar to return 2-3 days later. A complete reinstall of the OS is the only way they could get there computers back to normal. Again, I repeat,, DO NOT install this. But it does bring up the question,,, why is a security vendor doing making something as tenacious as this toolbar.

I think AVG has some explaining to do, but DO NOT install the AVG Secure Search Toolbar.

Can IObit be trusted?

Some of you may remember back in 2009 IObit were accused of stealing the proprietary database and intellectual property of Malwarebytes (http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=29681) and after reading through all the forum details over at malwarebytes forums I took the decision to delist all IObit software from FreewareBB.

Just recently however, I came across a title called "Start Menu 8" which I found really impressive. Basically, it allows any Windows 8 machine to bypass the metro interface and see's a return of the Windows 7 style start menu which I thought would be great news for all those forced to be on W8. However, I was soon to be disappointed when I realised it was from IObit.

So I got to thinking, all this theft nonsense was over 3 years ago now, surely this company have moved on since then but can they be trusted?. Well, I did a great deal of digging around and surprisingly things seem to have gone particularly quiet about it all. Sure, we have the usual threads about it which I've seen before, but no-one is really declaring where they stand on the issue anymore, or whether IObit can, in fact, now be trusted and have moved on!. However, I have since noticed two large download sites (download.com and majorgeeks.com) supporting IObit rather substantially and while I would have expected nothing less from the likes of download.com I was somewhat surprised at majorgeeks.

I was probably surprised because somewhere in my mind I probably still associate IObit with guilt, and associated majorgeeks in the same light as ourselves, responsible, cautious and dependable - however, I have no reservations whatsoever that IObit were stealing this information from malwarebytes, the evidence and the way in which malwarebytes caught them is compelling and conclusive to say the least. So, this is probably why I am surprised at majorgeeks openly and so publicly attaching themselves to IObit. While I have no doubt IObit were guilty, I do believe mistakes are made and people (or in this case, companies) can potentially learn from their mistakes, move on and sometimes even become better people (or companies) ... but do I believe IObit have moved on, grown up and became a trustworthy company?.

Well I stumbled upon a few discussions over at the majorgeeks forums and the admins over there seem to defend IObit vigorously, with one thread even claiming that majorgeeks had approached both sides (IObit and malwarebytes), discussed the issue and concluded they were happy to continue supporting IObit. Unfortunately, I could see no such thread detailing any such discussion or approach to IObit or malwarebytes. I searched their forums and even googled for this info on their site but to no avail, and while I have no reason to doubt majorgeeks had done this, I'm still left wondering why this information can't be found or more details regarding this contact isn't readily available. I know if it were me, I'd want to shout about it from the rooftops !!.

I continued to read with interest those threads about IObit and my main issue was the level of interest from majorgeeks with IObit, especially when I see post's like "Top Freeware Picks by MajorGeeks!" on the IObit forum where they list 4 IObit titles as No.1 and a further IObit title as No.2. Admittedly, and to their credit, they listed mbam as No.1 in "malware removal" and IObit malware fighter as No.2, but they then listed IOBit uninstaller No.1 in "Uninstallers" and Revo as No.2 - ooft !!. With that level of interest and recommendations from a download site to one particular maker of software, I find it a little concerning and can't help but wonder what the motive is, because from my own experiences I've found IObits software particularly buggy in the past - maybe I/we should test drive their software again!.

At the same time, it's noted that malwarebytes themselves have went particularly quite about the matter, with no more being said on the subject other than a statement back in December 2009 ....

Some weeks ago we presented evidence demonstrating that the Chinese company IObit had stolen Malwarebytes’ database and incorporated it into their software. In the days that followed we saw a complete denial of wrongdoing by IObit. They ascribed the matches between their database and our own to anonymous sample submissions, a dubious claim which we debunked.

Nevertheless, IObit did subsequently remove all of Malwarebytes’ definitions from their database (thereby cutting their database size by ~40% in one fell swoop). Though we did not receive an apology from them, nor any official acknowledgment of their theft, this reaction speaks for itself. Removal of our intellectual property was what we wanted, and we therefore consider that we have won. We thank the community, online media outlets and our partners for their support in helping us achieve this favorable result.

So, we know download.com will recommend just about anything which can be beneficial to them, majorgeeks obviously have some form of affinity with IObit, but the question is, can IObit still be trusted?. I'm planning to download some of their titles over the coming weeks so I may return with surprising results or confirmation that IObit most certainly won't be relisted at FBB but if you have had any further dealings or experiences with any of their software, please do let us all know

Google Chrome Spyware?

This is old information from around 2009, and I don't even know who ran this test (if there was one even), but I am curious if anyone ever got to the bottom of this issue. Does Google track every click of every Google Chrome user? Visiting Comodo's Facebook site Comodo Around the Clock I found a very profound article posted there about a test that has been run on Google Chrome. Again this is from 2009, and I do not know who ran the test or if there really was one, although I have found a few more instances of information on the topic using a Google search. Here is the final anaylsis of the supposed test from the Comodo site post:

"With its Chrome browser Google is actually monitoring your entire surfing behavior, not merely the searches you may conduct via their search engine"

Here is Wikipedia's definition of spyware:

From Wikipedia:

… Software that secretly monitors the user’s behavior… Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited…

This is a pretty technical report, so I have decided to post the body of the Facebook post for anyone who would like to take a look.

Now this is getting more and more interesting. Guys made a nice post on how Google Chrome is a spyware, indeed.

What was tested? Apparently, they have monitored Google Chrome behavior with network protocol analyzer tool and here are the results:

After typing Microsoft.com in the address field, all calls were addressed to IP 74.125.43.100 (host: bw-in-f100.google.com) which is Google’s for sure.

WEB SITE ADDRESS WAS HERE

For example:

Session Protocol
----------------
GET /complete/search?client=chrome&output=chrome&hl=en-US&q=h
["h",["WEB SITE ADDRESS WAS HERE depot","hsbc"],["Hx26M","430,000,000 results","32,300,000 results","27,800,000 results"],[],{"google:suggesttype":["NAVIGATION","QUERY","QUERY","QUERY"]}]GET /complete/search?client=chrome&output=chrome&hl=en-US&q=htt
["htt",["WEB SITE ADDRESS WAS HERE 500"],["Facebook","1,000,000 results","554,000 results","87,500,000 results"],[],{"google:suggesttype":["NAVIGATION","QUERY","QUERY","QUERY"]}]

Post continues…

This shows nicely how each and every character, when entered in slow speed, gets transmitted to Google whereupon the Google system returns its suggestions that will not be modified further, the more complete your final address string becomes.
It is important to note that we are analyzing the browser’s address field here, not a Google query field

I gotta say here that I have been intimidated from day one by the Google system. Couldn't say for sure what it is about Chrome that turns me off, but I wouldn't even try it. I hope Google isn't breaking the law here. That would be very heartbreaking to many Chrome users.

Anyone with any information...I'd appreciate the input...thanks...

I will look for more on Google search...

Downloading anything from gamesforboysfree.com will not allow you to continue with an install unless you first agree to install their toolbar, agree to make their website your homepage, agree to make their search your default and agree to make any new tabs/pages you open in your browser automatically go to their site !!. Normally I refrain from swearing or hinting it, but WTF?!.

I've seen some forceful tactics in my time but this is taking the biscuit !!. The only thing I will say in favour of this site is they do make the choice pretty obvious in the sense that you either install the crap or you don't get the program - which although still a pretty stark option, is nevertheless an up front one!.

Having said that, I note from the "publishers" details on install, that it displays "MyPlayCity, Inc" which leaves me with a slightly bitter taste in my mouth as this is quite obviously not even their own games they are attempting to distribute, it's someone else's!.
