He'd fit into any BROOKLYN neighborhood, so I was not&nbsp; surprised he recently moved his efforts to Brooklyn with <a href="http://www.eventbrite.com/contact-organizer?eid=2968895045" class="contact_organizer_link" style="color: #ee6600; display: inline-block; text-decoration: none; font-family: Helvetica Neue,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;">Brooklyn Bridge Ventures</a>! However that puts him , square on my radar! I will be at the &ldquo;<a href="http://makebrooklyn.eventbrite.com/" target="_self">Making Brooklyn roundtable</a> he is holding next Wednesday!&rdquo;</p> <p>Trust me, I understand the spirit of the post&hellip;</p> <p>When my son was 11- 12,we saw a young &ldquo;DRUNK&rdquo; , caucasian male &hellip; full red head of hair and a red neck!&nbsp; My son loudly proclaimed&hellip;</p> <p>&ldquo;There goes an IRISH Man&ldquo; &hellip;</p> <p>at a sidewalk caf&eacute; on The NY&rsquo;s Upper East Side! I was embarrassed. I had not raised a racist! My son steadfastly assured me he was not being mean he was just observing a pattern&hellip;</p> <p>Red hair, Red neck, drunk = Irish.</p> <p>In his experience!</p> <p>Then the young man spoke up... with a full Irish dialect! (Alas that is the problem with Patterns&hellip; There is always some fool who justifies and keep them relevant &hellip; )</p> <p>&ldquo;SEE&rdquo; my son said. &ldquo;I TOLD YOU.&rdquo;</p> <p>The difference is that my son at 11 was not making decisions that would affect that man&rsquo;s future. He was not a gatekeeper to access&hellip;</p> <p>Charlie O&rsquo;Donnell and many adults who are &ldquo;pattern watchers&rdquo; are!</p> <p>"Pattern matching" as described here is what I call an "ISM"</p> <p>PLAIN AND SIMPLE.</p> <p>that Truck&nbsp; in teh anaolgy is a fact ... It's Not a pattern...yet! When it is we'll&nbsp; adjust! As someone who has been on the other side of that &ldquo;pattern matching&rdquo; it&rsquo;s an &ldquo;ISM&rdquo; &hellip; and there are laws against it!</p> <p>But It is not only In &ldquo;opportunity&rdquo; that this is worrysome&hellip; in personal relationship- Pattern assessment can be detrimental!</p> <p>I was at a local Brooklyn Lounge when a Young Black male walked in &hellip; attractive in a suit but &hellip; obviously restless&hellip;</p> <p>&ldquo;What&rsquo;s his story&rdquo; someone asked&hellip;</p> <p>&ldquo;Probably drugs ...&rdquo; a few young black females chimed. He fit their pattern&hellip;</p> <p>I do not believe in patterns &hellip; I believe in cause, symptoms and affect&hellip; observe symptoms.. find the cause (or as I call them holes), affect change&hellip; A few days later I had an opportunity to speak to that young man&hellip; we ended up having an hour and a half conversation&hellip; he was conflicted between leaving his wife for his own happiness or being a &ldquo;parent, dad&rsquo; for his children&rsquo;s happiness.</p> <p>He was also not job searching (hence the suits); A college grad his identity as a Black may was tied to his financial success and a steady job! The He simply needed to breathe&hellip;</p> <p>&ldquo;Pattern Matching &ldquo;&hellip; funny in a 12 year old is is DANGEROUS in the hands of ADULTS! I am A Black female 46 single mother&hellip;</p> <p>In tech circles I am not the &ldquo;pattern&rdquo; yet my 30 years experience in fashion, my seven years research &lsquo; and my ability to get sales and numbers&hellip; cannot be questioned&hellip; I understand the rudiments of technology but do not code&hellip;</p> <p>I have a choice stand in front of Gatekeepers with Patterns as guides or be a maverick and seek solution&hellip; I chose the latter&hellip;</p> <p>you see, the problem occurs when those who rely on &ldquo;Pattern matching&rdquo; are placed as gatekeepers to access!</p> <p>I still have an email in my possession &ldquo;disinvites' me from a tech event, and further clearly states, that I was NOT meant to be invited &hellip; to an &ldquo;Open&rdquo; event... was this Pattern Matching &hellip; I questioned it but chose not to pursue it&hellip;</p> <p>which&nbsp; is the other side of Pattern matching... I&nbsp; Have never considered putting a company in front of a New York Tech venture process! Many Black&nbsp; will Not attend NyTech events... They are also Pattern Matching... Ny, Tech&nbsp; Rich&nbsp; white males, with trust&nbsp; fund and racist... it&nbsp; goes both ways...and it is WRON at both ends!</p> <p>I chose to look for a solution to&nbsp; funding elsewhere! I do not Trust the system.. but&nbsp; i also would rather spend my time developing&nbsp; solution... and that may be why there are Not more Lins in basketball!</p> <p>Therein lies my CORE problem with NYTECH at 21000 and growng&nbsp; few outside Silicon Alley and Silicon&nbsp; Beach (seriously)&nbsp; know they exist! BTW Charlie and others there is more to Brooklyn than 20 Jay Street! you will not get lost if you cross teh Atlantic!</p> <p>I also&nbsp; understand those like Jeremy Lin who believe in their vision and choose to work at their dream outside the eyes of gatekeepers! We always surprise because we believe in PROCESS! we Believe that eventually hard work pays off!</p> <p>I have been literally one of the few Blacks in the room and often only Black FEMALE at early (and even today)&nbsp; tech events!yet black attending NY tech events and wifi cafes head straigth for the Asians in the room.even at the my local Library.. .LOL!</p> <p>Here&rsquo;s my concern;-</p> <p>Sponsors and stakeholders approach leaders for introduction, and to source potential companies to align themselves with... leaders should have an "Open" and fair, process for selection! Government and other organizations...such as the NBA , often have "rules and regulations" governing the dissemination of such information and opportunity!</p> <p>Often times in new arenas these are unsupervised... so that "patterns" and other assumptions affect decisions! Secondly I strongly believe the wrong patterns are being used as a measure of potentia in tech!</p> <p>I&rsquo;ve tried many of the apps and while I understand their "Raison D&rsquo;etre", in the field, where they count, they &ldquo;DO NOT WORK!</p> <p>It&rsquo;s why I opted to investigate the arena BEFORE seeking Investment&hellip; It&rsquo;s why my potential Investor is pleased at the &ldquo;meat&rdquo; he sees in the planning and proposals! (see Essence&nbsp; last September) bt like many&nbsp; I kept&nbsp; quiet... we always do&hellip; it&rsquo;s our culture</p> <p style="padding-left: 60px;">Then&nbsp;recently&nbsp; in <a href="http://www.facebook.com/brooklynfashionweek/posts/259254654141012" target="_blank">this thread on&nbsp; Brooklyn Fashion Week</a> the reference again...&nbsp; This time I&rsquo;m taking on Mac Smith and others!&nbsp;</p> <p>Beside it's Black History Month one of two times I can get&nbsp; Black desigenrs to&nbsp; Discuss issues (the other is Kwanzaa)</p> <p>Tomorrow address the&nbsp; charges of incompetence laid forth!&nbsp;</p> <p>There are many&nbsp; emerging Fashion Tech&nbsp; models around "One Offs" or bespoke&nbsp; so why the disparity! His message was simple we have the same challenges you do, 'Help Us'! &nbsp;</p> <p>Currently &nbsp;apart from designers across the US I work &nbsp;one on one with designers &nbsp;in the Caribbean, African &nbsp;and France! they sell and are in demand &nbsp;for shows! I've been reviewing the seven year Fashion tech exploration i did! &nbsp;I have huge challenges- I looked at articles on emerging &nbsp;fashion tech &nbsp;trends... that is not the sector I serve! Do not get me wrong &nbsp;I love the traction... but &nbsp;they &nbsp;do not address the &nbsp;issues withing the sector I specialize in!&nbsp;</p> <p>The concept of Brooklyn Fashion Week and Brooklyn Fashion Film Festival &nbsp;work&nbsp;but &nbsp;designers did not have stock fro mass market! I know that You can take product straight top a buyer and save the cost! I know you can sell &nbsp;clothing directly &nbsp;from "shoppable media"!&nbsp;&nbsp;The Fashion &nbsp;workshops I run are excellent ... So how do you scale for profit &nbsp;with a sector that is so &nbsp;Independent &nbsp;when the selling &nbsp;point is their independence!&nbsp;</p> <p>These are Not the designers discussed in Fashion Tech &nbsp;circles... They &nbsp;are Master Independent designers (as opposed to the emerging indie sector) They abhor poor quality and are careful where they hang... you won't find them on Etsy! &nbsp;They are artist and artiste, gifted, skilled, &nbsp; stubborn &nbsp;and proud... they have great "story" and "brand" potential!&nbsp;</p> <p>I love them and I love the work they &nbsp;do... and so do MANY!</p> <p>but they will NOT &nbsp;give up &nbsp;control of their designs the crowd... so crowd sourcing design is out!! They are NOT &nbsp;selling at &nbsp;70% OFF (they never have left over stock!) so flash &nbsp;sales and discount sites are out! &nbsp;They &nbsp;have no need to they practice Fair Trade! They respect their customers privacy... so &nbsp;social commerce is a challenge! &nbsp;They specialize in fit &nbsp;so current &nbsp;3D fitting apps and distance sales are out!&nbsp;</p> <p>Like i said I have a huge challenge!</p> <p>I think in images!</p> <p>Whenever I'm stuck I open &nbsp;a graphic program and start pulling a collage &nbsp;together! Eventually a clear picture emerges of what I want or need to do! The above image is the latest evolution ... &nbsp;so what &nbsp;do I have ...and how to I bring this sector into the &nbsp;Fashion tech evolution!&nbsp;</p> <p>I need to design technology that suits their need... I've known that for a while... but i really &nbsp;did NOT want to! But &nbsp;seven &nbsp;years and every &nbsp;damn app still falls short! Seriously why do you need 300 apps to function! &nbsp;</p> <p>I &nbsp;do a lot; I've done a Iot since 2003, &nbsp;i &nbsp;want &nbsp;simplicity &nbsp;and functionality!&nbsp;</p> <p>It's easy to &nbsp;use &nbsp;"We' but in the end &nbsp;it's personal accountability that &nbsp;gets things done! &nbsp;Execution is Key &nbsp;many &nbsp;claim they &nbsp;do and in the end NOTHING is done...</p> <p>Last December I FINALLY got a chance to work on some of my personal &nbsp;projects and I continued into the New &nbsp;Year; revising &nbsp;repositioning; in deep meditation and prayer! In the end success or failure the buck stops here... By 13&nbsp; he could set up a blog and lay out a business plan...so I had an opportunity to observe first hand...</p> <p>When he entered high school&nbsp; I visited his purposely computer teacher and Immediately found myself paying more attention to events in the NY tech community... I was that alarmed!</p> <p>He has no excuse... or did he,&nbsp;</p> <p>he had the resources... he got the apps teh&nbsp; sites as tehy&nbsp; were releaseed! we literally lived a Half block from the library! Granted they had only 4 computers to serve one of the most densely populated school areas and the one electrical outlet was given to the "SNAPPLE" machine... rather than made available for rejuicing laptops and handheld devices! &nbsp;I'll pith my &nbsp;custom/bespoke designers against large retailers coughing up 3d fit and patterns based on &nbsp;inaccurate numbers &nbsp;anyday!&nbsp;</p> <p style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Bitstream Charter, Times, serif; line-height: 19px;">Now as for &nbsp;"how an item looks on someone" &mdash;</p> <p style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Bitstream Charter, Times, serif; line-height: 19px;">Few retail sales clerk can &nbsp;do that in person, expecting 3D Technology such as FIT.ME to do so is teh "Emperor has no clothes" that No one in the fashion industry wants to say!
