So much to share, part one!

Posted:Monday, May 21, 2012

Howdy all! It's been a while since I blogged and I have so much to share, I am dividing it into two parts! Today, I'm going to cover a couple of special projects I have going on (and that good ol' Rob alluded to in the previous blog).

First of all, I am very excited to tell you all of a webcomic I will be involved with for the next month! What's that? another comic by moi? for a whole month?!? Yes! I give you:

Every Monday-Wed-Fri for the next month I will be a part of Shattered Myth's Creator's Spotlight Project! J. Cebron Cook decided to take some time off from his comic and invited twelve creators to each take a month long turn at the creative helm of his Mythoscape! He (like many of you or so I hope and dream) liked my work and invited me to choose a character to spotlight. I thought Thoth here looked interesting and got to work. So do be sure to spread a little webcomic love around and check out not only my month but all of the Spotlight stories over at Shattered Myth! And to all of the visitors from the Mythoscape checking us out, I hope you enjoy our comics as much as you did Thoth: Print Is Dead!

Second of all, I have another kind-of-sort-of webcomics related project to share with you all. My girlfriend Sara (who doesn't get mentioned nearly enough here at Remedial Comics and I get reminded of that often believe you me) is a huge... I'd better add some italics and boldness to that... HUGE fan of those fuzzy round balls of fluff that are Squishables. Now apart from continually trying to convince me that Ash would make a perfect candidate for the Squishable treatment (someday dear, someday) Sara saw that the webcomic for Squishables, The Fuzzy Five was having a contest that she really really really really wanted to win. She had an idea for a comic and very sweetly asked me to draw it up for her... and wouldn't ya know it? We won. So here is the comic... and Sara's first official-unofficial webcomic scripting work (hey you may meet her a convention someday sitting by my side... or at my chair when I am off looking for stuff). Seriously though, this project was a lot of fun and I got to draw the Justice League, so double win.

And not only is Squishables a great company that makes cute as a button stuffies (we own many and they just keep getting cuter), but they are very webcomics friendly... and if I have any visitors here as a result of the contest, a big fuzzy high-five to you all.

Okay... that's it for part one of this blog. Next week I will get to part two where I share my awesome experience at MCBA's SpringCon! Seriously... I have been at some great conventions, but I absolutely LOVE the MCBA... and I'll tell you all about it next week! Until then, stay wonderful you remedialites!

Still working on that nickname for y'all... Any suggestions?

So.... A Lot Has Happened

Posted:Sunday, May 13, 2012

Corey and I had a pretty amazing Wondercon. I took a lot of pictures and grabbed a lot of business cards and so on and then I got sick. I mean really sick. And I was going through ten weeks of involuntary web classes. I say involuntary because as much as I wanted to know HTML, CSS and the basics of such fundamental web building languages as Javascript, JQuery and PHP I don't really want to learn them. If only there was a pill I could take or something that would give me the knowledge without going through all that... work. So I was sick as a dog and struggling through the only two courses that have challenged me tremendously and now it's almost two months later and here we are.

A lot has happened. Too much to really write to be honest. There was a rather large kerfuffle at Wondercon involving our hotel and I want to cover that at length but for the most part we had a good time and right now is not the perfect moment to be discussing... that... little hornets nest.

You'll hear about it soon.

In other news Corey has been a pretty busy guy. His significant other talked him into drawing a very cool comic for a Squishables contest. I hope they win so everyone can see it. It's pretty great.

And speaking of Corey, he will be doing the Midwest Comic Book Association Spring Con next week. So if you are anywhere near the Minnesota State Fair Grounds next weekend do stop by and see him. I'm sure he'd be happy to draw something for you. That's what he does. He's very good at it.

During the con Corey will donate the original artwork for this beauty:

To be auctioned off for charity. It's topical. It's op culture. It's awesome.

I hope all you parents of the female persuasion had a great Mother's Day yesterday. I made a video for my mom that showed how I'm living out here in San Diego. Naturally she will not watch it for weeks if ever and tell me that she loved it no matter how she feels about it. Mom's are great.

I know Corey has a big announcement coming up in a couple weeks about a big project he's been working on for awhile and I've got class (I'm learning to do 3D in Maya now) early in the morning so that's all for now. But don't forget to check us out 5 days a week for new comics. And thanks for reading.

Wondercon and other stuff

Posted:Thursday, March 15, 2012

So Corey is here with me in sunny San Diego (and of course it's supposed to Rain all weekend whilst being beautiful in Minnesota). We're heading north in a few hours to sunny Anaheim California... home of Mickey and his comrades for Wondercon 2012. We'll be in the Artist Alley around AA163 if you are in the area and want to stop by and say hi. We have some very nice postcards we'll be giving away for free and we'll also have our usual assortment of filthy wares.

It's looking to be a good time.

I don't know if you guys are Adult Swim fans but our good man Corey got some of his art on the Tee Vee as a bump in between shows/ It's a "King of the Hill/Star Wars mashup that is both funny and adorable.

Here's a link so you can check it out yourself.

So with any luck we'll be back to our regular comic schedule some time in the middle of next week. Until then thanks for stopping by and if you guys are in the Wonderdcon area do please stop by and say hi. We're lonely and we need your money for companionship.

And you too... definitely you too.

A Change In Your Programming Schedule

Posted:Friday, January 13, 2012

So this is just a quick note to let you know that the schedule for Remedy is going to change from Mon, Wed, and Fri to jst Mon and Wed for new comics. It's sort of a good news bad news situation. The problem we are having is that Remedial Comics doesn't really make any money right now. And monetizing the comic through merchandise usually means you have something to sell. We have our shirt store and we do ok at conventions but we don't have enough traffic to make much more than pizza money in ad revenue and we have no books to sell.

And that's a big one for us. Corey and I have wanted to get our first year of strips collection together for awhile but the issue is money and time. The biggest challenge without a doubt is replacing the first 40 or so comics that were drawn by the previous artist Jason. Jason's a great guy but having a book with multiple copyright holders for the artwork isn't idea. So Corey has been chipping away at redrawing those earlier strips in his own unique style. But as I mentioned, money and time are an issue. Corey has to make money at his regular job and since he's already drawing 5 comics a week he's already pretty short on time.

We considered taking a hiatus altogether. That's how passionate we are about getting these books done. The hope was that we would get the books done in time for Wondercon in March. But we looked at the schedule and the financial commitment and reality stepped in and bitchslapped us. So we won't have books at Wondercon (yes we are exhibiting at Wondercon and I'll get the banner up with dates as soon as I can). But we will have lot's of other cool things so if you live or will be traveling in the Anaheim, CA area in mid March do consider attending the show, stopping by and saying hi. We'd love to meet you.

But back to the schedule change. It's temporary. I don't like slowing down telling the story of Remedy. If I had my way I'd have Corey quit his job and we'd bring you comics all week long. But this is what we need to do to get ourselves positioned properly with the business end of things here. We're in it for the long haul. So don't worry. A minor hiccup in the road is all this is.

And there is a sliver lining; beyond the fact that we will have books to sell. Corey has already finished the first 15 or so of the original strips. So instead of a new comic on Friday's you will get a redrawn older comic. Later on today I will be posting Corey's version of our very first Remedy comic (so if you want to be reminded of what the old one looks like now is your chance). And it will replace Jason's old strip in our on line archive. And each Friday you will get another redrawn older comic until we get caught up replacing the older strips and can once again go back to a normal, 3 new strips a week schedule for Remedy.

I hope you guys are supportive of this decision. It's something we need to do. And hopefully we can get this knocked out in a few months and then back to the regular way of doing things AND we can start planning our books properly.

I hope 2012 is going well for you guys so far. And don't forget to come back and check out the very first comic later today, redone by Corey.

Happy New year

Posted:Saturday, December 31, 2011

So 2012 is upon us. I know that everyone is saying that the world is going to end this year. But honestly as awful as every election year is it's rarely as bad as all that (badump ::crash!:: ). But seriously folks. It's 2012. And I can't believe things have changed so little. Remember in 2008 when we were freaking out that Bush was finally gone and we had elected a black man that had inspired us with hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow. And then President Obama spent the last three years proving to us that a black man can do just as bad of a job as President as any white man. Good for him. Bad for us (badumpity bump ::crash!:: ).

It's going to be an interesting year. Right now a man I consider to be an absolute loony (Ron Paul) is leading things in Iowa simply because the only thing the Republicans are unified about is that very few of them want Mitt Romney running for president. And yet it's clear it's going to be him. The dude is like a chameleon. Changing his posture and stances to suit whatever the occasion requires. And while most politicians avoid the label of "flip-flopper" Romney seems to have embraced that label and made it his own. I do agree with him (when he uses the excuse that what he did for health care in Mass. is not right or what he would force on the rest of the country) when he says the states need to have more power and be in the forefront of experimentation and improving the nation. I just don't believe for a second he'll give up any power should he get elected.

And his tax policy... well the tax policy of all the Republicans running, most of the ones in office and most of the ones elected for the last decade has been suicidally irresponsible. Illogical in every sense of the word really.

But hey... just... you know like 300 more days until we know Obama will be back in for another four years and hopefully since he will be a lame duck then he will grow some stones and start delivering on that hope and audacity thing he promised us.

I still can't believe he signed that NDAA Bill.

Anyway, the new year is supposed to be about hope for the future and all that.. crap. And since 2009 was a little better than 2008. And 2010 was a little better than 2009. And 2011 was a bit better than 2010... it stands to reason that we ought to have hope that 2012 might get a little better.

So HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. I hope it's a good one. And from all of us here at Remedial Comics to all you wonderful readers. We hope that you have the best 2012 you can. Enjoy every day. It may be your last.

Beenie O'Weenie Foldafigure

Posted:Monday, December 19, 2011

Hiya folks!

Didja notice Wonder Weenies is updating every weekday this week? What the heck is THAT all about? Have I lost my mind? (well, yes... probably- but that's besides the point...) Did somebody change all the days on my dry erase calendar to Tuesdays and Thursdays in an effort to get me to update more often? (darn kittens... always up to no good...) Am I going to update the volume of comics I draw each week? (only if there are suddenly 36 hours in a day to give me extra time... does that happen in 2012? That's what leap years do, right?)

No, Remedialites and Wonder Webcomikers (still working on nicknames for you fans... one of them's bound to stick)... I wanted to give y'all a present for whatever end of the year celebration you hold dear! So I done designed a Beenie O'Weenie paper action figure (or as I like to call 'em, "FoldaFigure") for you to print out and assemble! So nice! So fun! So... experimental. Seriously, I have never done one of these online before... only for conventions on actual paper for purchase. I have no idea how the idea will work in cyber form. Now, you all feel free to print these out and see how I did. Each of the parts sheets should be available at a larger size in our extras section under "wallpaper." And if not, well I'll see to it they get there. You can try clicking on the image and printing that, but it may wind up a little small to actually make. Then again, you may have tiny nimble fingers you're not telling me about.

So give it a shot and lemme know what ya think. I'll be back with regular Wonder Weenies after the new year. I think I will have some guest comics and perhaps a few other special goodies for ya the last week of the year. Remedy will have a holiday special up on Friday and be back again next Wednesday. I'm looking forward to 2012... lots of good stuff on the horizon... provided you know alla that gloom and doom end of the world stuff is all hooey. I'll see ya in the new year!

And remember-- I am a huge!

Rob EDIT: Get all the Beenie O'Weenie Foldafigure pieces in larger size (much better for printing) from our extras section here:

Just click on the part you need for a large size version on us.

And if you like the Foldafigure stuff we'll have more of it at our tables this upcoming convention season. Happy Holidays!

Corey here with further EDIT: Hey y'all! Be sure to check out Luke Foster's comic Moonfreight3! Friend of Remedial Comics, Luke has guested for both Remedy AND Wonder Weenies now! How super awesome is he? Go read it now! NOW! Then come back for more comics here... but READ IT NOW!
In Dreams

Posted:Tuesday, December 13, 2011

So it's been over ten years since I took Psych 101 when earning my first college degree. I still remember it vividly if not correctly. Mostly because of my smoking hot professor. She would occasionally relate certain psychological and medical conditions to the female orgasm, she was the spitting image of Jadzia Dax from Star Trek DS9 (yeah so huge nerd so what she's hot) and she was about five minutes older than me. So I thought I had a shot.

Nope.

I asked her out after the final exam in the course (a gentleman would never put a woman in a conflict of interest). Shot down in flames. She gave me a hug before I left. It was pretty spectacularly awful.

But one thing I learned in that class is that being infatuated with the professor is a really good way to make boring subject matter more interesting. Since there are surprisingly few hot professor chicks in my academic history though... other methods were employed.

One thing I remember about the course though was something of a revelation for the way dreams work. Until you understand the science of dreaming and read the studies involved a lot of time dreaming is something that remains somewhat mysterious. Even talking about your dreams is seen as kinda weird. So anecdotal and personal experience is about all you have to go with.

So I remember being somewhat surprised by things like REM stages and the different states of dreaming. If I recall correctly my professor described the three unconscious states; Id, Ego and Superego as corresponding to the three ways we experience our dreams.

In one view it's like we're watching a movie in a theater and the movie is starring us. There is a detachment from the things "we" are experiencing on the screen. Then, just as quickly (and some would argue simultaneously) we find ourselves experiencing the same event we saw on screen in the first person. Now it's happening to us. Often these lead to some vivid nightmares. The other state is sort of floating above our bodies in a 3rd person shooter sort of way. We see everything that happens and are "in" the environment but cannot affect it in any way. When this happens you often wake up with a poor opinion of your actions. At least I do.

In truth I don't remember my dreams very often. I have sleep apnea and may have had it all my life. Throughout the testing to determine my sleep disorder the doctors remarked on my unusually deep sleep. I sleep like the dead and I fall asleep very quickly. And it's pretty rare when I remember what I was dreaming about overnight.

I usually tell myself stories to get myself to fall asleep. They usually aren't long. And you get to read most of them here. Lucky you.

There is one way I can dream and it's probably a pretty common thing for most people. When I wake up if I... linger. You know what I mean. You're awake but you stay perfectly still and let your mind wander. Often when I do this I'm trying to go back to sleep (I'm incredibly lazy). I don't do this often because the dream I usually have makes me mopey and miserable for the rest of the day (and no I'm not telling you what it is and shame on you for asking such personal questions). So it's best avoided. It can be a bit addictive though. Dreams can really be quite vivid and realistic and in some ways wonderful and in others quite horrible.

These days I do most of my dreaming when awake. But I'm pretty lucky to be doing stuff I really want to do for the first time in my life. So I don't need to daydream as much as I used to.

In our current storyline our intrepid sidekick Ash has somehow entered the dreams of thirteen year old Ashley Campbel. How he did that and to what end are the reason's you'll be coming back for the next few weeks so I hope it's worth the trip for you. And to that end I'm not going to spoil anything.

But those of you who have seen the 1984 Dennis Quaid flick "Dreamscape" may have some idea as to where I'm going. I was 14 when that movie came out and I've always loved it. And while there are similarities Dennis Quaid is not a super powered cat. So obviously we'll be telling you a slightly different tale.

I hope you enjoy it.

Those of you who are observant may have noticed the "Censored" bar over our logo recently. This was in furtherance of our support of stopping the proposed SOPA bill and it's clones. Bills like this are what we used to tease China with their internet censorship about. It will make incredibly common things like linking uploading photos and video illegal and punishable by some pretty draconian measures.

If that get's your attention please stop by this site and learn more. Call your Congressman or something.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Posted:Thursday, November 24, 2011

I just wanted to personally thank all the readers who have stuck with us. You guys mean the world to us and we're so grateful that you come back and read our stuff. I hope you guys have an amazing holiday season in general. And the kickoff is always Thanksgiving. This is the first time in years I'm not doing something with the family. In fact I'm sitting here with Storm (my cat for the uninitiated) two feet away on the bed and I'm in my bathrobe. It's five-thirty pm. I didn't do anything today although I will need to go cook my dinner soon. Barbecue chicken breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing and peas and carrots. Mmmmmmmmm.... Mmm. Getting hungry just thinking about it.

As you may have noticed we're taking time out from our schedule to enjoy the holiday. Today's Wonder Weenies is a nice Turkey day related strip with Dee helping out with the cooking as only she can. Heck most hot dogs have turkey in them nowadays anyway.

Tomorrow you'll get something similar for Remedy although I'm not going to spill the beans and say what it is. I got a chuckle out of it for sure. Corey is a funny guy.

Lastly as a little holiday treat (like finding a roach in your gravy) I went ahead and posted an all new Badly Written Badly Drawn. Yes! I actually updated the black sheep of Remedial Comics. I told you I would from time to time. And now I have proof.

Take some time today to mend some fences and maybe get a little bit closer to family. Even the ones you can't stand. Believe me when I tell you time slips away so fast. And it just isn't worth the alienation you can get from your whole family when you separate yourself from parts of it.

Unless they really make you miserable. Then I would suggest filling their purse (assuming they are a woman) with leftover mashed potatoes and gravy. It's an oldie but a goodie. And as for guys well... if they ate any turkey whatsoever you know they will be passing out on the couch in front of the football game eventually. When you get the Sharpie out I recommend a monocle and pencil mustache in keeping with the formality of the holiday. Just make sure you use the permanent ink Sharpie as it may be as long as four days before they have to go back to work.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. We'll see you back here Monday with our regular programming.

I Spent The Day With Batman

Posted:Monday, November 07, 2011

So anyone who knows me knows that I'm a huge comic nerd. I had a collection in the 80's and 90's that I ended up selling once I got out of the service and I've regretted it ever since. As a store manager for Blockbuster in the mid 90's I got caught up in it again and found myself sucked into the stories.

In recent years I stopped collecting. Some people have probably heard this from me before but I honestly feel there is no dramatic tension in mainstream comics anymore. The one example I throw out on this is the resurrection of Barry Allen. I LOVED the Flash when I was younger. And when Barry died saving the world in "Crisis On Infinite Earths" I felt like I had lost a friend or even a father figure.

And at first I was resentful of Wally West. I didn't think he had it in him to be the Flash. Like most of the Teen Titans he was too much with the angst and the whining.

But I grew to like and respect the character. I remember when that woman scientist (I think her name was McGee as she was the wife of that crazy speedster who always looked like he was taking way too many amphetamines) "unlocked" Wally's full power and he burned a trench across the entire country killing several family pets and destroying roadways. I remember when he saved the world by racing these two god like creatures who could teleport anywhere instantly. I remember when he got married and had kids.

And now Barry is back. Awk-ward!

And the same thing happened with Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordon. I don't want this to turn into this long rant against main stream comics. But it's hard for me to read them knowing that everyone short of Uncle Ben is basically immortal and can come back from the dead any time some writer decides he wants to "shake things up."

So that's why I don't read or collect anymore. Truth be told I find webcomics far more interesting and satisfying. And free. Can't forget that. Though I do support the creators whose work I enjoy.

But I'm still a comic geek. I like to read storyline synopsis on major events even if I don't buy the books that go along with them. Occasionally I'll pick up a compilation or a particularly interesting graphic novel. And I'm always looking to learn from the people in comics who have years of experience. I'm reading one of Peter David's books right now.

So it was a particular thrill the day my friend Terrance asked me if I wanted to go help out at a movie set and it turned out that the movie... was a Batman movie.

From left to right, my friend Terrance Thompson, Bryan Morton as Bats and yours truly.

I got to spend the day on the set of a "Bat In The Sun" production.

Bat In The Sun is essentially Aaron Shoenke and his dad Sean Shoenke making Batman movies for the sheer joy of it. Because they obviously don't own any rights to The Batman they can't charge anything or make any money from their movies. So they collect friends and assets where they can... and spend a whole lot of their own money making Batman stories. And before you point out how crazy it might be to spend your own money and work so hard on something that can never make money for you let me just point out that we all have our hobbies. Apparently it takes a hundred million dollars just to get a sailboat to the starting line for the America's Cup competition. If I had a 100 million to piss away I'd fund a hell of a lot of Batman movies before worrying about whose sailboat is faster.

So I spent the day yakking to a whole bunch of very kind and talented people and basically doing a bunch of production assistant type stuff. Nothing fancy. Hold this light... run this extension cord and so on. And even though I was only there for one day Aaron very kindly added me to the credits. He spelled my name wrong... LOL... both times. But I appreciate the gesture just the same.

The actor playing Batman is Bryan Morton and he's a very nice young guy who goes to conventions all over the country dressed as various superheroes. He's particularly good as Superman I think as he has those classic farm boy features. In many shots in the film Batman is played by Kevin Porter who starred in the feature film "Dodgeball." Bryan tends to do much of the physical stuff in Kevin's stead.

Terrance was also in the film as a thug who gets his ass kicked by the Dark Knight early on. Terrance and I became fast friends at the school I'm attending but he recently had to move up north due to family obligations and we don't talk much anymore which is a shame. He's a great guy.

Rounding out the cast is Aaron as Nightwing/Dick Grayson. In addition to writing, directing and blah blah pretty much everything he also stars in some very intense scenes with Alexa May's "Poison Ivy." I was on set for much of the work between them and it was very interesting to see a woman in her underwear acting. Can I just say right here that I think I was a lot more uncomfortable than she was? Not that Ms. May was strutting around or anything. She was in fact a consummate professional. I think the fact that it weirded me out says a lot more about me than her. Lastly Xango Henry put in an amazing performance as Killer Crock. I've always been a big guy. Six foot, I'm over 350 right now. Next to Xango (pronounced John-go) I looked like a muppet. The dude is HUGE! Like scary huge. But in real life he's a kind and often very funny man.

All in all I'd say it was a real pleasure and I hope that I have the opportunity help out again some time in the future.

So if you are wondering. The name of the flick I helped on is called "Seeds Of Arkham" and if you like it I recommend you check out all the Bat In The Sun movies. "City of Scars", "Patient J" and any other you can get your hands on (they aren't hard to find they are all in Bat In The Sun's YouTube Channel). And if you feel like helping to make the next Bat In The Sun movie but you can't make it down to the set like me then check out their Kickstarter page where they are taking donations for their next project.

And speaking of things that are Batman movie related...

In other news the awesome Chadm1n is hard at work... well Chadm1nh is always hard at work on something but right now among other things he's working on getting us switched over to our new host so we won't have any more outages. Sorry again for the mess that was last week. Now back to the story.

I hope you guys had a great weekend. See you back here tomorrow for an all new Wonder Weenies and then Remedy on Wednesday. You know us. Comics all week.

Cheers.

Power Outage

Posted:Thursday, November 03, 2011

So I'm going to get this up fast before power in Connecticut blinks out again. As many of you know the recent snowstorm kicked the living shit out of New England. Most of the leaves were still on the trees and the wet heavy snow did about quadruple the damage that hurricane Irene did and that was pretty bad in it's own right.

For a long time now Chadm1n has graciously allowed our sites to have server space on his host at his home. The upside was the great price. You can't beat free with a stick. The downside was every time he lost power we lost our site.

Since I moved to San Diego we've had 5 outages. three short ones of a day or less and two long ones of three days or more. I don't like missing update days. I really don't like it when my site goes down altogether. And I hate it when those things happen at the same time. It seems that although I have largely escaped the evils of winter in general and Connecticut specifically those evils have long arms to reach out and punch me in the metaphorical junk (not that my junk is metaphorical but since a state nor evil in truth have arms... you get what I mean) whenever the spirit moves them.

The situation in Connecticut is still bad. According to Connecticut Light and Power over three hundred thousand customers or 27% of everyone they service (CL&P is the biggest electric company in CT but not the only electric company in CT) is still being affected by the damage. So we literally may lose the site again at any moment.

Since it is already technically Friday on the East Coast I've decided to just call this a lost week and we will get back to our regular schedule for all of our comics on Monday. That's the bad news. The good news is that this nearly week long hiatus was enough to convince me that we need a new host.

So in the next week or so (time and Chadm1n permitted) we'll be moving to a professional host with cool things like backup generators and stuff like that. In short, no more outages.

So have a good weekend. Sorry about the utter mess. I'm sure there are those of you who were very concerned about Remedial Comics just disappearing like that. Should anything like this ever happen again please let me assure you that nothing short of death would ever have me shutting the site down without a word or explanation to you my gentle readers.

Do please let everyone know we are back up and will be back on schedule on Monday. And have a great weekend.
